There was a time when I didn't really like The National. The band’s baritone vocals and sometimes somber lyrics had me thinking their songs were dull and depressing. My husband had been a fan of theirs for years, though, so naturally their music made frequent appearances on our playlists. And then one day, I just sort of started liking them. I think "So Far Around the Bend" got me there – it remains one of my favorite National songs and one of my favorite songs of all time. When High Violet came out, I added them to my regular music rotation and by the time their newest album, Trouble Will Find Me, was released, I was a fan. We got tickets to see them here in Charlotte at the lovely Fillmore and I was excited to see them live now that I actually liked them.

The show was last Wednesday and you guys… I fell in love. Hard. It’s kind of like when a good friend becomes that perfect someone and you realize that up until you had them in your life you were missing a piece of yourself but didn't know you were missing it. Dramatic? Sure. But it’s the perfect metaphor because looking back, I truly can’t believe that I waited so long to love this band. I’m a girl who loves emotion and beautiful melodies and poetic lyrics in my music, which pretty much encapsulates The National. I just didn't notice it until they were right in front of my face.

And y’all – Matt Berninger. What a fox. During the show, he sang "Mr. November" and jumped off the stage and the crowd parted and he climbed up on the railing right in front of me. He was singing in my face. I touched him. I realize how ridiculous it sounds for a 35-year-old woman to be swooning in this manner, but I cannot help it. Yes, Matt, you are the one I think about when I’m sitting in my fainting chair drinking Pink Rabbits. In fact, I kind of need a fainting chair when I think of you.

In all seriousness, though, the show was phenomenal. It’s at the tippy top of my “Best of” list. Oh, and I forgot to mention, when we were eating at the diner before the show, Scott and Bryan (drummer and guitarist, respectively) were eating at the counter and my husband asked the waitress to put their meal on our tab. After dinner, they stopped by and thanked us and introduced themselves and they were super nice guys. It makes me happy to think that this band that I love is made up of genuinely down-to-earth dudes.

this image is so appropriate for my work right now. i am managing a huge project that involves a lot of change for an organization and employees very set in their ways. it's a challenge, but when the program is complete, it will be a roadmap that we can utilize over and over again in other areas and provide so much development for so many people. it's easy to get stuck in the tedium of the old, so i'm printing this and posting it on my desk to help me focus on the positive impact my work will have on others to keep me motivated!

some good friends of ours took a last minute trip up to lake lure this past weekend and were kind enough to invite us to stay with them. my parents graciously agreed to watch the dogs for us, so we drove up in the sunshine on saturday afternoon to our mountain getaway. saturday night we grilled up some dinner and ate on the deck overlooking woods and a creek. we drank wine and played with our friends' sweet daughter, junie. and on sunday, we went on an adventure, exploring the town and taking pictures. here are some of my favorites from the weekend...

i have had bangs for over five years now - they've been zooey deschanel thick and pixie-angled short and side-swept layered and everywhere in between. and now, as i try to grow out my hair for winter updo potential, i am also growing out my bangs.

it is the worst.

[yes, i am writing an entire blog entry about hair while our country is debating a military strike on a foreign nation that (almost certainly) used chemical weapons on its own innocent people. why do you ask? if i think too much about what is happening in syria and how my country is responding, i get panic attacks and we're looking at the positive these days, so allow me to indulge in some very emotionally manageable hair talk, k?]

as i was saying, growing out bangs is the worst. especially my thick, curly, yet somehow stringy bangs. i learned a trick today, though. if you pull your hair back in an updo and side swipe your bangs and shellac with hairspray so they won't even think about moving, you will feel polished.

i attempted this fresh style via the beauty department today, and while it's not nearly so perfect as in the photo (see my previous thoughts on perfection), it looks infinitely better than my usual frizzed out curlies or poofy unkempt ponytail.

this is probably one of the easiest short updo's i have tried - and i have tried several. very unsuccessfully.

don't you just love the beauty department? they make beauty novices like me feel great on a hump day.

this really rang true for me. i have a tendency to feel that things need to be perfect - and often they are not, and then i give up or feel badly about myself. i'm working on being okay with trying and understanding that there is beauty and learning in making mistakes...

on finding meaning

Today is a story of my journey toward a more positive outlook. Being positive isn't something that comes naturally to me – I have had to work at it. And though I do work at it, I didn't exactly say to myself one day, “you are going to be positive.” Rather, it happened organically, as an outcome of a very low time. There is nothing simple about re-shaping your world view, and yet at the same time it is incredibly simple – somewhere along the line, I just made a choice to make the best of things.

For those of you who don’t know me well, the beginning of 2013 was pretty tough. Within two months’ time, we had 3 deaths in the family – Justin’s father, my grandmother, and a miscarriage of our first pregnancy. During that time, I was really in a bad place. I found out I was pregnant the same weekend Justin’s father, Doug, passed away and I began to think of the baby as a special gift from him. I thought it was a way for Doug’s spirit to live on and that it was meant to provide happiness at a time of great difficulty for my husband and I. Placing this higher purpose on our unborn child and then losing that child unexpectedly, made me question everything – from life’s purpose to the existence of God to my own life and what I was meant to be and do and become. I began having nightmares – really disturbing and traumatic nightmares – of being trapped or helpless; watching babies die; watching my husband die; being stalked, chased, murdered – and waking up screaming. The dreams were vivid and I had a hard time shaking the images for days after.

My parents were taking a long weekend trip to Edisto Beach with family friends and I decided I needed time to properly grieve and clear my head, so I joined them. But it poured buckets of rain and the wind was so strong on the beach that you couldn't walk a few steps without the sand stinging your face. As I tried to make the best of the situation, we had another crisis. My mom had been trying to reach my grandmother for a full day and she wasn't answering her phone. We called the police to check on her and as we anxiously awaited their call, I went upstairs and stared at the ceiling, silently willing the universe to give me a break. They say God only gives you what you can handle, right? Well, I don’t know if I believe in God, but I certainly believed I couldn't handle any more. My mother’s cell phone rang and I heard muffled voices and headed down the stairs. I remember standing on the steps of that beach condo, already so lost and empty, and seeing my mother, crying into my father’s chest. I fell apart into sobs. My grandmother had passed away – two days prior, they thought – and I felt utterly broken.

I have been through some grim times that have challenged my spirit, but I don’t think I’d ever felt as abandoned and dejected as in that moment. I couldn't understand why this was happening. There seemed to be no light ahead but I had no choice but to go on. My husband needed me. My family needed me. I numbed myself to the hurt and stopped trying to find meaning and purpose – instead, just trying to get through day by day, hour by hour, minute by minute. I forced myself to find joy wherever I could – simply because the alternative was sinking into complete despair. It wasn't easy.

We came home from my grandmother’s funeral and were forced back into regular life. I started journaling. I made time for baths and aromatherapy. I got back into reading. I held on tightly to the people I loved who were still with me. On a friend’s recommendation, I started going to a non-profit here in Charlotte, The Respite*. They provide therapy, classes, grief massages, and during my visits there I found a safe space to grieve.

After a few weeks’ time something miraculous happened. By letting go of trying to find meaning, I found acceptance. I realized that my attitude had shifted. I started telling myself that maybe the baby wasn't a gift from Doug but maybe it was a gift for Doug. I realized that if we had to go through the heartbreak of losing my grandmother, we were blessed that it happened while we were away. My mom never had to find my grandmother lying there. She was with some of her best friends and her immediate family when it happened. My grandmother peacefully slipped away while reading her book after her nightly cup of tea. And I received the closure I so desperately needed for losing a baby I would never meet – I was able to bury a token with my grandmother and leave a token at the grave site of my other grandparents. It gave me a chance to say goodbye and it eased my mind of the nagging thought that my grandmother would never meet her great-grandchild. I felt that somehow, somewhere they were together, and that gave me comfort.

My story isn't unique. Plenty of people go through loss and find acceptance in this way. But there are many people who don’t – who can’t let go of the why of it all in order to move on. I am not okay with what happened. I still think things like, “I should be 27 weeks pregnant now” or “I don’t have any living grandparents anymore”. But I make the choice, the sometimes-very-difficult choice, to snap out of it and focus on what I do have. I find motivation and meaning in the things I enjoy, in the people I love, in the wise words of others, and in the idea that no matter how hard I try I will never ever fully understand why things happen to us when they do. You can only control so much – and I’m choosing to control the way I face each day and the trials and tribulations that meet me.

*If you or someone you know in the Charlotte area is experiencing depression or grief, I cannot recommend The Respite enough. The support I found there and the safe space it provided was invaluable to me and integral to moving to a place of acceptance.

This weekend was fantastic. The weather was perfect - sunny, 80 degrees, with a breeze. Saturday we took our time getting up, had our morning Starbucks, and drove out to Cline's Antiques in Mt. Pleasant for an adventure. Cline's has furniture, lawn ornaments, electronics - anything and everything you may be looking for scattered across old barns and tractor trailers on the family's former farm land. We had a great time rummaging and taking pictures...

When we got married, I wanted to add a lot of homemade touches to our wedding. I crocheted a heart for everyone at the wedding. I made placecards in the shape of pennants with paper flowers my mother painstakingly quilled. I bought a ridiculous amount of Heather Bailey fabric which my friends helped me sew into pennants and napkins.

After the wedding (which was all I could have hoped for and more), we were left with over 100 napkins and yards of leftover fabric. A novice seamstress at best, I had no idea what to do with the fabric. My best friend asked for it and I gave it to her. On our first wedding anniversary, she delivered this amazing wedding quilt, created by my talented friend Missy at blustitch.

The pictures do not do it justice. The colors are so vibrant and the stitching is impeccable. It is one of the most beautiful things I have ever owned - and all the more special knowing it came from a part of the most important day of my life.

I love TV binge-watching. Sometimes it's the best way to get into a new show because you don't have to wait another week to see what happens next. My husband and I have spent many a lazy Sunday plowing through episodes of recommended "must-see" shows that we missed the first time around.

Some of my favorite shows are off the air now and I'm anxiously awaiting their return. If you're in the market for a weekend of TV relaxation, I recommend catching up on these shows before their new season begins:

1. Sherlock (BBC)

Before Elementary on ABC, there was Sherlock on BBC. A new take on the Sherlock / Watson relationship set in present-day London, the episodes play like short movies, each at around 90 minutes. Each series (there have been 2) consists of three episodes. I recommend watching on a cold, rainy day with a cup of tea and a fire in the fireplace.

2. Homeland (Showtime)

I kind of can't believe that there are still people who haven't seen this show. Filmed in my hometown of Charlotte, NC (what what!), Claire Danes stars as a CIA agent with a complex relationship with former marine/possible traitor Nicolas Brody, played impeccably by my TV boyfriend Damien Lewis. With two seasons under it's belt, I dare you not to love this twisty-turny thriller and its complex characters.

3. Luther (BBC)

I don't remember who recommended this fantastic BBC series, but I am forever grateful. Idris Elba stars as the title character, John Luther, a Detective Chief Inspector in London's Serioius Crime Unit. The show is dark and fast-paced with a lot of moral ambiguity to keep things interesting.

4. Game of Thrones (HBO)

I didn't want to like this show. I thought, "Oh yay, Lord of the Rings, only longer." But my goodness, is it addictive. It's another one of those anomoly shows where I like/care about very few characters (see: The Walking Dead), but I can't. stop. watching. It's a fun ride, but if you want to start watching, start soon. Season 3 begins on March 31st.

my husband is one of those people who always knows the best places to find the latest in music, movies, and tv. if i hear an entertainment news tidbit that i want to share, the conversation pretty much goes like this...

Today I'm sharing a recipe for one of the dishes I refer to as a "flex food." Meaning that once you know the basics of the fundamental dish, it is extremely flexible, so you can change up the flavor or add whatever you happen to have on hand.

This is probably one of the fastest and easiest dishes I make at home. You'll find it listed on an Italian menu as Aglio e Olio (AH-glee-oh ee OH-lee oh), which literally translates to "garlic and oil," but my Americanized familiy refers to it as something that sounds more like "Olly Oy." Growing up, my mom would make this any night of the week she didn't feel like going grocery shopping. We always had the fundamental ingredients (spaghetti, garlic, olive oil, and cheese) on hand in the kitchen. Here's how you make our family's version of the classic:

T H E F U N D A M E N T A L
1 lb spaghetti
1/2 cup good olive oil
6-8 cloves of garlic, smashed and peeled
Salt & pepper to taste
1/2 cup Pecorino Romano cheese

While cooking the spaghetti, heat the garlic cloves in the oil over medium-high heat until fragrant and golden. Add salt and pepper and remove the garlic cloves. When spaghetti is finished cooking, drain and toss with the olive oil. Stir in cheese and serve immediately.

That's it! So simple, but packed with flavor. So now that you know the fundamentals, here are some examples of how flexible you can be with the dish. I encourage you to play with it and come up with your own creative spins (and feel free to share in the comments)!

T H E F L E X
For a more traditional version :: instead of smashed garlic, use 2-3 minced cloves and leave them in the oil. Add red pepper flakes to the oil as it heats and toss with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano instead of the Pecorino Romano.

For a citrus spin :: after heating the garlic, add the juice of one lemon to the oil. Toss with Parmigiano-Reggiano.

Use your garden's fresh herbs :: When you stir in the cheese, add your favorite chopped fresh herb - I like oregano, parsley or basil.

Kick up the nutrition :: Use a whole wheat pasta and add some vegetables. Those commonly found in Italian recipes work especially well. Try sauteed spinach, broccoli, broccoli rabe, or zucchini.

Make it Caprese-style :: Toss with chopped fresh tomatoes, basil, and fresh mozzerella cheese for a spin on the traditional Caprese salad.

This past weekend I saw Les Miserables with my friend, Karen (appropriate, seeing it was one of the first things we bonded over when we were 13). I've been a ~~obsessive nerd~~ fan of the musical since my tween years, so I was iffy about seeing the film. I am a bit of a purist when it relates to stage to film adaptations - especially this one, considering I spent countless hours in my bedroom pretending I was in rehearsals for the role of Eponine. I'm glad I decided to see the movie, though. It's definitely not the same thing as seeing it on stage, but if you need a Les Miz fix (or just a three hour emotional release), the movie is a fine option. Here are some of my thoughts about the movie, starting with the best.

THE GOOD

- The small touches that only work on film :: The intimate setting of the movie allowed for some moments that you just can't accomplish on the stage. The most poignant of these for me is when Javert, upon seeing little Gavroche among the dead, removes his uniform badge and pins it on the boy's chest. It smacked of emotion and, in one instant, brought to light Javert's internal struggle with inherent morality vs. civil rights and wrongs. Also, it was just plain awesome.

-Anne Hathaway :: I've never been her biggest fan, so it means something for me to say that she completely blew me away. I've always watched the first half of Les Miserables with a sense of impatient anticipation - waiting for the meatier moments of the revolution and the Marius/Cosette/Eponine love story. This is the first time that I have been breathless during I Dreamed a Dream - her performance was nothing short of magical.

- The realism :: The difference between a stage adaptation and a film is that the former needs to pack a theatrical punch and the latter can be more subtle. While in the stage production the main focus is on the music, the intimacy of the film means the actors can indulge more in the story, play with vocal power, and mix singing and speaking to greater effect. I've seen Les Miserables a dozen times and never before have I so deeply felt Jean Valjean's inner conflict as in the transformative What Have I Done sequence at the monastary. Good on you, Jackman.

THE EH

- The Thenardiers :: It was the obvious move to cast Sacha Baron Cohen and Helena Bonham Carter as the despicable, over-the-top, comic relief characters that are the Thenardiers. At this point, Cohen's schtick and Carter's crazy eyes are so expected that the whole thing was just tired. They're like that friend you have that tells the same funny story to each person they meet - it's funny to the newcomer that hasn't heard it before, but when it's your 20th time over, all you can manage is a weak smile.

- Samantha Barks :: I love Eponine, y'all. L-O-V-E everything about her. I related to her ugly duckling, unrequited love story through my formative years. I mean, that was my LIFE in high school as portrayed by this French 19th century street urchin. And Samantha Barks was...fine. She has a nice voice. That's about all I have to say about that.

THE UGLY

- Those infuriating close-ups :: It's really not necessary each time an actor has a solo to zoom in so closely that I can practically see his/her tonsils vibrating like a Looney Tunes character. The close-ups were fine in small doses, but midway through it started to grate.

- Russell Crowe :: I'm clearly not alone in thinking that Russell Crowe is the weakest link in a mostly superb cast - just read any review of the film. And despite what you read, it's not that his singing voice is that terrible; it's that Javert should be a powerhouse, and Crowe just can't deliver. Not only is his vocal prowess remiss, but his portrayal of the stoic man of the law just comes across as devoid of emotional depth.

- Bring Him Home :: I am going to preface this by saying that I like Hugh Jackman and I think he made a good Jean Valjean. That said, I think his voice has limitations - namely those high notes in Bring Him Home. It was a huge let-down in an otherwise respectable performance.
