Airbnb is great for guests and great for hosts, but it can be a complete nightmare for the long-term tenant who suddenly shares a driveway with a rotating cast of strangers who were told the parking was theirs.

A man who had been renting the upstairs unit of a Los Angeles duplex for three years found out his landlord had converted the downstairs apartment into an Airbnb.

The result? Complete parking chaos.

I live in a duplex in Los Angeles.

After changing the locks on the last tenant, our building’s owner has started allowing their friend to host Airbnbs in the downstairs apartment.

This created a lot of unnecessary drama for the homeowner.

Parking immediately became an issue as guests started to block our cars in.

Whenever we ask them to move, they claim that the Airbnb owner told them to park in the driveway.

Even before this debacle, parking was hard enough.

Whether this is true or not, our neighborhood has street parking — it can, however, be very competitive.

Because of this, it’s essential that we’re able to park in our driveway to avoid being ticketed or towed — both happened to me last year.

The homeowner is left without a lot of good options.

We have been renting the upstairs apartment for 3 years and were never informed about the plan for the downstairs unit.

In addition, we were never told to stop using the driveway or that guests would be using it as well.

We’ve tried contacting the leasing company but have gotten no reply.

The homeowner begins to contemplate more serious action.

As someone who has had my car towed, I consider it a last resort — however, I’m starting to get fed up.

My job starts early in the morning and it’s been a huge pain getting people to get up and move their cars.

So the last resort is looking more and more favorable.

We’re essentially being bullied into giving up our parking spaces with no prior communication or discussion.

We considered calling the city, but based on the short-term rental laws, nothing illegal is happening.

For one lady last night, it was three.

It was around 2 or so on a fairly quiet night.

Discount Lady (DL) walked in. She asked for a king room.

I gave her the price. She immediately frowned.

Here’s how the conversation went…

DL: Why is it $3 cheaper on your website?

Me: The website gives an estimated cost.

The taxes and whatnot can vary based on location.

DL: I am looking right at the listing here. It is $3 cheaper.

Me: Ma’am, I cannot price match online prices.

DL: Oh, okay.

The guest tried to negotiate again.

She handed me her ID and credit card. Then a light bulb went off.

DL: Hey, can I use my points? I am a Super Shiny Rock member.

Me: You would have to book through the app. You could also use the website or direct telephone reservations.

I have no way to apply points to the cost of the room. If you book now, you cannot check in until 3 in the afternoon. It is already past midnight.

DL: Oh well, I need the room now.

Me: Then, the price I quoted still stands.

And again…

I continued to process her check-in. Then yet another bulb went off.

DL: Wait. I can use the friends and family rate.

Dear readers, at this point I was trying so hard not to roll my eyes.

I think I sprained something in my ocular cavity.

Me: In order to do that, you need a special link.

It must come from the manager of the hotel your friend works at. It also requires booking online.

This woman finally cut her off.

DL: I know that. I just thought…

Me: You thought wrong. Now, am I using this same card for the incidental deposit?

Or will you be using another payment method?

She’s amazed by how some people would negotiate a discount less than $5.

I finally got her squared away and off to her room.

I then went out front. I chain-smoked for about 25 minutes. I needed to get my head back on track.

It will never cease to amaze me.

People will quibble over a price difference of less than five bucks.

Arguing over three dollars at two in the morning sounds exhausting.

The employee explained the rules clearly, but the guest kept searching for loopholes anyway.

At some point, the extra effort costs more energy than the discount itself.

Living in an apartment building comes with its challenges in the best of circumstances, but when the landlord fails to do even basic upkeep, it can be a nightmare.

That was the situation that the people in this story were in, so when a potential new tenant asked one of them what he thought of the apartment, he was completely honest with her. Not surprisingly, this drove that person away and several others as well.

The roommate who was honest thinks he was helping them to avoid living in such terrible conditions, but his partner says he should have lied and said that the apartment was fine. He claims it was wrong to mess with the landlord’s livelihood.

So I (28F) am in a slumlord situation and my lease is up in June.

Landlords really can be the worst in certain areas.

My landlord has refused to fix many things wrong with this apartment.

There is a roach infestation, bad wiring, windows that don’t shut (Or open), leaks in the roof, no heat for the winter, and no air conditioning for the summer.

This really is not a safe living condition.

We live in Alabama. I have a partner (35M) and two young children (both 7F).

Today I noticed that the landlord has an open house for the apartment above mine. All day, there have been possible neighbors coming to see the open units.

I bet those potential new tenants hated that.

My dog barks LOUD and REPEATEDLY when he hears someone pull up into our parking space and when he hears people talking outside.

He started barking as someone had pulled into our parking space (I can tell the difference between his barks) and I went to open the door, thinking it was my partner. It wasn’t.

She asked him for his opinion, he was honest. There is certainly nothing wrong with that.

It was a young woman looking at the apartment upstairs. She asked me candidly “How do you like living here?” so I told her the truth.

She was horrified and left right away. This has happened about three times total, and I’ve told the truth each time I’ve been asked.

No way. He would be messing with the potential tenant’s entire life by not warning them.

I just talked on the phone with my partner who is at work and he said it was an AH move of me to “mess with the owner’s money” by warning possible future tenants.

So I’m here to ask this. Was I wrong for telling them the truth? Or should I have just grinned and said “it’s fine” and let them find out like we did?

AITA?

No way, this guy saved those tenants from months of heartache and problems. If the landlord wants to make money, he should keep his apartments in at least livable condition. It really isn’t that hard. This guy did what all decent people should do.

I can’t imagine what his partner is thinking. They don’t owe this awful slumlord a thing, and certainly not loyalty. If the landlord wanted tenants to give the apartments a good review, he should keep it in good condition.

Lying to potential tenants is just wrong, and could set them up for issues with them if they do move in. How would his partner feel if new neighbors move in, realize how awful it is, and then blame these two for lying about it. At the end of the day, this guy was honest, and that is a good thing.

So we live in our own house, while our neighbor lives in an apartment.

We have a garden — not that big — and the neighbor apartment’s top floor door opens to our garden. They have their own space, though.

So new neighbors brought new problems.

Recently our neighbors moved out and new neighbors came in.

I also have a Dachshund and Golden Retriever mix dog.

She is an old lady, about 13 to 14 years old.

Sometimes when I’m ill or it’s late at night, I take her out in the garden to pee instead of going for a walk, because there are dogs roaming at night in our neighborhood.

This is a huge problem for this new neighbor.

Every time the new neighbor sees this, they start complaining about her peeing and such.

Once they even complained about me taking her out in the garden just to hang out while I read a book.

I suppose they hate dogs overall and are trying to use the “we have kids” excuse.

They’re acting like they own the garden.

So when it happened again, the neighbor threw another fit.

This morning my period cramps were horrible, so I took her in the garden to pee and the neighbor saw this.

She started yelling about how shameless I was and such.

After she peed, I took her inside and didn’t reply to anything she said because it was nothing but insults.

So the neighbor’s bad attitude escalated even further.

She also threatened she would let her kids play in our woodshed, which is right next to our house and still connected to the garden.

At this point I can’t even take my dog out to sunbathe without listening to complaints.

Plus, I have never taken her out while her kids are playing, because the children are scared of her.

This neighbor clearly needs to get taken down a notch or two.

Even a makeshift fence would be a big improvement.

The audacity of moving into someone else’s building and immediately developing strong opinions about their garden is wild enough on its own, but yelling insults at a homeowner on a pain day because her 13-year-old dog needed to pee outside is a completely different level.

She owns the house. She owns the garden. The dog was there before the neighbor unpacked a single box.

The “we have kids” excuse is not a zoning ordinance, and the woodshed threat is the kind of thing that needs to be shut down in writing before it becomes a pattern.

When you live in a neighborhood you have to expect that everyone will make some noise sometimes, but usually it doesn’t get too bad. Sometimes, however, you get one bad neighbor who always seems to be having parties and never turns their music down.

What would you do if that one loud neighbor had the nerve to yell at your normally quiet next door neighbor telling them to keep it down when they were having a small birthday party?

That is what the homeowner in this story experienced, and it was the last straw. She went out and confronted that noisy neighbor, telling her that she was the loudest person in the neighborhood and if she said another word, she would flood her with noise complaints.

I’m 23F living with my parents if it matters. Our next door neighbors “Q” are generally very quiet.

They sound like the perfect neighbors.

They use their backyard frequently, but they’re never excessively loud and don’t actually break any noise laws in our area.

Maybe once or twice every summer they will have some family over and they’re louder than usual, but that is pretty rare for them.

And on the other side, terrible neighbors. How frustrating.

Our backyard neighbor’s “N” are the total opposite. They make a ton of noise every summer, including things that break noise laws.

They use their backyard all day every day when its nice out and are so loud that I can’t have my windows open because all I hear is them.

Some people just can’t seem to live at a normal volume.

Their normal conversations consist of essentially yelling. They play loud music all the time, and they are frequently out late at night (past midnight) in the backyard and making so much noise I can’t get to sleep.

Despite this, they seem to have made it their family hobby to police everyone in the neighborhood. They call in noise complaints and tell neighbors to be quiet all the time.

They have a lot of nerve to tell other people to be quiet.

Anyways, both Q and N were outside yesterday, N playing music and being noisy as usual and Q being a little louder than normal. I had the windows open in the living room (which is right on the backyard) so I heard what was going on.

I heard people at Q’s house sing happy birthday, and after the song finished I heard N start yelling at them to be quiet and that she would call the law office and file a complaint if they didn’t go inside.

Good for her. Some people need to be put in their place.

I know this wasn’t the most mature thing to do, but I got really upset and went outside and told N to shut up. She looked really offended and said that it wasn’t her fault that Q was being loud and its within her right to tell them to be quiet.

I said that her family are the biggest pain in this neighborhood, they make way more noise than Q makes on a daily basis and no one can enjoy the nice weather because of them. She’s a massive hypocrite for the way she’s been behaving for the past few years, and the bylaws also apply to her.

This lady is finally fed up and won’t deal with them anymore.

I said that if she filed a complaint I would wait for them to show up and tell them about all the noise that they have been making today and for the past few years.

After that, every single time they were making and unreasonable amount noise in their backyard I would call the bylaw office and file a complaint against them.

Well, this is escalating quickly.

They break noise laws so often they would get fined eventually. She tried to tell me that would never happen, so I just told her that I can turn into a “relentless ****” when I set my mind to something, especially when its with people I don’t like, so try and test me, it wont end well for you.

Her and her family went inside at that point. I wished Q a happy birthday, they carried on with their party, and I went back in my house.

Yes, it was a jerk move, but it was also well deserved.

I told my friend and she said it was a jerk move, but my parents don’t seem to mind.

AITA?

Her friend only says that she shouldn’t have done it because she doesn’t live next to the bad neighbors. It is clear that everyone in the area hates these loud neighbors, but they don’t say anything just to keep the peace. That has finally boiled over, and this person isn’t going to tolerate it anymore.

Sometimes the hypocrisy of people is just unbelievable. The loudest house in the neighborhood is always the first to complain about others. It is sad but true in most cases.

The world would be a much nicer place if everyone would just try to keep it down and keep others in mind. You can still have fun without loud music late at night or disruptive parties. Most people have to get up in the morning, and your fun shouldn’t interfere with that. Sadly, that is just wishful thinking.

When you work with someone you consider a friend, it can be good to offer advice on how they can do their job better, or even how they can do better in life in general.

What would you do if you were trying to tell your coworker friend that he was using his ADHD as an excuse to get out of doing certain tasks that he didn’t like, but he got upset that you were calling him out?

That is what happened to the guy in this story, and his friend refused to consider this as a possibility, simply saying that he couldn’t do it because of his ADHD. At the end of the conversation, the friend told him to shut up about it, putting an end to the talk.

I 19m have a friend 18m I work with at a fast food restaurant.

Everyone has jobs they don’t like to do.

We were talking about people we dislike working with and mention people that are lazy and pretend to have no clue what they’re doing when they just don’t try and maybe they don’t know but that’s only because they’ve put zero effort into even learning.

I joke he’s a little bit of a hypocrite because he complains if he’s ever put on the station for bagging and running out food. Like asked to not be put on it.

Keeping people focused on their areas of strength is smart.

Because he’s bad at it and not in a way practice is gonna fix its just not something that works well with his ADHD.

So, may as well have him somewhere else he’ll be more useful. But I do clarify that’s mostly a joke he’s not comparable to the ones doing no work but that is a bit of an excuse just not to do something he doesn’t like.

Yup, that makes sense. Not everyone would be good at this task.

He says yeah he doesn’t like it but it’s not an excuse it’s because of those reasons. I ask him to explain more and he says it’s difficult for him to hold short term information in his head while doing other stuff.

So all the looking at the receipt and the screen and looking what foods ready and what isn’t and what he’s already put in the bag and what hasn’t.

Why practice something you aren’t naturally good at when you can focus on things you are good at?

Then based on that what steps comes next, they got X so he has to grab Y with that etc. it’s just incredibly frustrating to do and he has to quadruple check every step of everything he does and he’s slow on it then he feels bad.

I say I get that. But task avoidance, while I understand why you’d turn to it, isn’t the best approach to any situation.

I can see why some people would want to overcome difficulties.

Like why not practice that skill of holding information like that? If anything he should take those shifts as an opportunity to do that and ask to be put back on them.

Just don’t get frustrated about it because you can’t be automatically good at everything. And yeah ADHD probably makes it harder but everything with work you can get better at.

People with ADHD can do anything if they work hard at it. The question is, does he really want to work hard at bagging fast food?

He looks at me like I’m slow and tells me in a really condescending way that’s not how that works and this just isn’t something I know a lot about and it’s better he focus his effort into what he’s better at.

I say that’s dismissive and again an excuse, there’s doctors with ADHD, you can bag food for people. Which I said in a supportive way not a you’re just lazy way.

He doesn’t want to hear this opinion.

He seemed mad and told me to just stop talking about it because it’s getting annoying. I told him I’m not being annoying, he’s annoyed because I’m telling him to do stuff he doesn’t want to do even though he knows he should.

And that’s not me insulting him it’s so he doesn’t think of my advice as just me being wrong and annoying.

It is time to drop it.

He then tells me to actually shut up please and am I trying to make him mad why am I doing this.

I say I’m just trying to help him, but if he’s not in a mood to hear it that’s okay you can think about whenever. Just try not to immediately dismiss stuff that would help you. Then he just stops talking to me.

Yes and no. While he isn’t technically incorrect, he should have let it go sooner. It was clear that his friend wasn’t interested in what he had to say, so why keep pushing?

For some college students, being in a sorority or fraternity is a big part of the college experience. But imagine creating a fraternity that needs to be recognized by the college’s Greek council in order to have any privileges. What would you do if the president of another fraternity kept voting against you while everyone else, yes, literally everyone else, voted in your favor?

The college kids in this story are in that exact situation, and they are very upset, as you can imagine. Then, one day, they have a very easy opportunity to get revenge, and they decide to take it.

They even got a sorority involved to help make the revenge extra sweet.

Campus “Hotshot” Decides to Park Illegally

So back in college, we were attempting to start a chapter of a fraternity at our university.

At the time we had created a local fraternity, but university rules stated that national backing was needed for recognition by the school’s Greek council.

No council recognition meant that you had jack squat for privileges at the university: no right to advertise, no right to recruit, couldn’t even reserve a table in the commons.

We needed Greek council recognition, which required unanimous support from all the current members.

They had a big problem.

Enter our antagonist… we’ll call him Richard. He might have been the easiest guy to hate on campus.

His parents funded his tuition, his apartment, his Mustang, and his hair plugs (just a rumor, but his hair looked like someone threw black wax pellets at a white dartboard). Pasty pale, fatter than a walrus with a sweet tooth, and owner of the most punchable face this side of Jake Paul, literally everyone outside his fraternity disliked him.

All that said, he had somehow become the president of the largest fraternity on campus (maybe his parents bought him that too), and he did not like us. Apparently a couple of the guys in our frat had the audacity to suggest that he wasn’t the coolest dude on earth (he was a firm believer of this opinion all the time).

Richard was seriously the only problem.

We had applied for recognition with national backing twice, and the only dissenting vote both times came from, you guessed it, Richard! That’s 3 other fraternities, and 4 sororities that wanted to let us in, but one group of jerks, led by Richard, keeping us out.

We had other run-ins with him too: he had reported us for every small infraction that he could think of, called the cops on our parties once or twice, and just basically been a petty, spiteful pile of platypus droppings all day, every day.

What comes after the backstory? Oh yea, the revenge!

Here’s some context about where they lived.

Our fraternity had 3 guys living in the closest apartment complex to campus. Being the closest apartments (and cheap), there were obviously a lot of Greek life members living there: several members of many of the sororities, and one apartment full of guys from Richard’s fraternity (sadly, not Richard himself… mommy and daddy paid for a place on the nicer side of town).

As is always the case in apartment complexes, there is NEVER enough parking, and the owners of the complex had a lovely deal with the local towing company to profit off of anyone who parked even a tiny bit outside the rules.

We all hated this until one glorious night when it worked in our favor.

It was almost too easy.

When Richard came to visit his fraternity brothers, he didn’t bother trying to look for a legal parking spot. Those were far away, and poor bulbous Richard would’ve had to walk more than the distance from his couch to his fridge.

So being the privileged, gobbling jerk he was, he just parked on the grass… DIRECTLY BEHIND MY APARTMENT!

Did I know what Richard’s car looked like? Yes, I knew what Richard’s car looked like.

I immediately did 2 things: call all the guys in my fraternity over to watch the show and call the tow company.

They didn’t just watch.

Now, we could’ve just waited for the tow truck to come, and reveled in the inconvenience we caused Richard, but that wouldn’t have been fun.

Once my fraternity brothers arrived, we found out that one of them was mechanically inclined and happened to know where the cabin air intake on a Mustang was located. So, we gathered up all the smelliest stuff in my apartment – long-expired condiments, fish sticks, and I think there was some nail polish remover (I don’t know why) – and smeared it all around the air intake… it was mid-summer.

Back in my apartment, with everyone looking out the windows waiting for the tow truck to arrive like kids on Christmas waiting for Santa Clause, we had one more bit of inspiration.

We called a girl in one of the sororities that we knew would have Richard’s number (and who also hated him… remember everyone did), and as soon as the tow truck arrived, we had her call him and say, “I think I see your car being towed.”

I didn’t think Richard could move that fast, but he came lumbering down from the apartment, like a grizzly bear on roller skates, and immediately started begging the tow truck driver to leave the car.

If you’ve ever tried to beg someone with your car already halfway up on a rollback, you know how that went: no dice.

Getting the car towed was nice, vandalizing the car was fun, but few things in my college experience topped the joy of watching that scene unfold.

It was time to celebrate.

Blubbery ol’ Richard was crying tears that probably smelled like Crisco and Axe body spray and watching his precious car get towed away with a look on his face like someone had just told him that he could only get lite mayonnaise for his sandwich.

The cherry on top was finding out through the grapevine that he couldn’t figure out where the smell in his car was coming from for weeks.

Did we celebrate with a couple 30 packs of cheap beer and an all-night drinking binge? Yes, yes we did (we were a fraternity after all).

But did they get to become an officially approved fraternity on campus after that? That’s the real question.

While it sounds like they found this revenge very satisfying, if Richard still voted against them, it didn’t help anything. I wonder if they did ever end up getting their fraternity approved…or not.

At least Richard hopefully learned his lesson that there are consequences to actions like parking illegally. It doesn’t matter how entitled you act or how much money your parents have, a tow truck will still tow your car.

There’s a big difference between being busy in college and not having thirty seconds to reply to an aunt who is trying to buy you something.

One devoted aunt worked hard to buy her niece nice gifts, but when her text messages to her nieces repeatedly went unanswered, she was left puzzled.

At first, she just kept buying the gifts anyway. But when she received more radio silence around her niece’s birthday, she was starting to reconsider everything.

I’m in my late 40s, and my niece is turning 20.

We used to be close, but she’s in college two hours away and super busy.

Her current family dynamic is pretty complicated.

Also, her dad — my older brother — and I have a rocky relationship at best.

He and I haven’t had a conflict in years, thankfully.

However, when we do, my mother usually attempts to be the peacemaker, but this usually means I concede or apologize because he’s the golden child.

Anyway, back in mid-December, I texted her to ask what she wanted for Christmas.

So she ended up having to improvise — for her birthday too.

I never heard back, but I bought her a gift card to her favorite store.

The last text in our text history was this unanswered text, and I recently texted her to ask what she wants for her birthday.

Again, radio silence.

She’s beginning to feel puzzled by the lack of response.

We used to do somewhat big family celebrations for birthdays, but my brother hasn’t hosted anything for his kids’ birthdays in the past few years.

I’m really, really tempted not to get her anything if she can’t be bothered to answer me at all.

Her older sister (22) responded for her last birthday, and I sent her a gift as she was also away at college at the time.

WIBTA if I just didn’t buy anything for her?

This woman has already done more than her due diligence.

Put quite simply, her niece should know better.

A “Happy Birthday” text would suffice, although she probably wouldn’t get a response to it.

The aunt really isn’t asking much here, just a simple acknowledgment to confirm the effort is landing somewhere.

If her niece can’t take 30 seconds to respond to her texts, it’s not controversial to suggest that maybe she doesn’t deserve to be showered in gifts.

You can try as hard as you like, but if the person on the receiving end can’t pay you the courtesy you deserve, maybe it’s time to hang up the towel.

This aunt should save the money and buy herself something nice instead.

Imagine working for a cleaning company, and you do all of your regular cleaning work. If your manager wanted to add some additional work to your plate, would you assume she wanted you to do that first, or would you go about your regular work first?

In this story, one manager seems to think the employee is a mind reader, when she’s clearly not. She gets really mad at her and assigns her another cleaning task in retaliation.

When the supervisor hears what happened, that’s when the story really gets good. Even though the manager sounds awful, the supervisor clearly has the employee’s back!

Scrub the walls of the parking garage with a magic eraser? Ok, see ya in about 6 hours.

Ok so this happened about 3 years ago. I was working for a cleaning company in governmental buildings and fyi this is a manager that I and plenty of other people had issues with.

One day I went into work like normal everything was fine, my manager needed me to do some extra floors to vacuum.

Sure no problem, told her that I didn’t have that many floors to do and could do them after just needed a list of the floors to vacuum.

No argument from her just a “Mhm I’ll have it for you after” and off to work I went.

The manager apparently thinks OP should be a mind reader.

About 2 hours go by and I’m done my floors, I go to the office to get a list of the floors she needed me to do and turns out she needed me to do them early morning (news to me) and ended up sending someone else and I should have waited.

Told her she never said it was time sensitive otherwise I would have waited.

She rolls her eyes and just repeats the same thing and that I still should have waited but whatever what’s done is done and when I ask her if there was anything else that needed to be done she tells me to grab a bucket, some gloves and some magic erasers and scrub the walls of the parking garage.

OP got to to work.

There’s 5 levels and I knew that it wasn’t part of the contract to clean it plus this was a method she used as a form of “punishment” for “insubordination”.

She expected me to have it all done by the end of my shift.

I grabbed my stuff and did as told but was only able to clean 1 level. By the end of my shift I told her along with my supervisor that I was only able to do 1 level of the parking garage and that I would try and get more done tomorrow.

The supervisor sounds awesome.

Now my supervisor had no idea that’s where I was since she didn’t tell him and was needed elsewhere for something more important that ended up not being done at all since no one could find me (couldn’t get a radio and signal sucks there so no texts or calls).

HE WAS LIVID!

He asked everyone to leave and then the very loud argument started. “Why would you send her there!?” “It’s not even part of our contract!” “You were warned about pulling this crap on employees!”

The manager had to apologize.

She wasn’t fired (3 strikes and then your out kind of thing) but with the 2 higher ups (regional manager and regional supervisor) there with her the next day was forced to apologize for what she made me do and wasting my time face to face.

My only only reply “Thank you for your apology but you didn’t waste my time and money. It’s the company’s time and money that you wasted, now unless there’s something else I’ll get to my floors since I have a busy day of vacuuming.” And just left.

She hadn’t given me trouble since.

What an awful manager! I hope she eventually gets fired.

When your boss tells you to do something, you might as well do it as long as you’re getting paid. Even if you know there might be more important things to do with your time, that’s not really up to you to decide if your boss chooses to fill your day with busy work.

The manager in this story sounds super annoying. I’m glad she was forced to apologize, but it’s disappointing that she wasn’t fired. Maybe there’s a three strikes rule, but if she’s pulled this stunt before, I’m sure there have been more than three strikes. The supervisor just doesn’t know about the other instances.

Hopefully, the manager learned from this situation, but if she didn’t she’ll probably lose her job eventually.

Sometimes, people stay quiet in public situations because they do not want to overstep or get involved. But there are moments when bad behavior becomes impossible to ignore, especially when it starts affecting the people around them.

This bystander found themselves in that exact situation after watching a kid openly mock an older store employee while the parent stood by and did nothing. After calmly stepping in and telling the child to stop, things quickly became tense when the parent turned their frustration toward the stranger instead.

AITA for telling someone else’s kid to stop being disrespectful?

I was in public, and this kid was acting rude and disrespectful to the people around him. I am not talking about normal kid behavior or being loud.

I mean, he was outright disrespectful, and his obnoxious behavior was affecting other people.

I told him, calmly, that he needed to stop and that the way he was acting was disrespectful.

I did not yell, threaten him, touch him, or try to “parent” him. I just said something because, apparently, none of the adults with him were going to.

The kid’s parent did not like that at all.

The parent got upset and basically acted like I had no right to say anything because it was not my kid.

I get that nobody wants a stranger overstepping.

But I also think there is a difference between trying to parent someone else’s child and just calling out bad behavior when it is affecting everyone around them.

To me, basic public decency still matters.

AITA?

Now, this is a tough one. As a parent, I wouldn’t want anyone else parenting my children. But in this case, if the obnoxious behavior persists for a while and the parent remains oblivious, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with defending someone who’s being subjected to a child’s rude behavior. The bystander gave the parent plenty of opportunities to correct the child’s actions, but they didn’t. Naturally, at some point, someone has to step in.

Some managers get so caught up in power trips that they forget employees can follow the rules too.

This deli worker spent the day buried in nonstop pizza orders during a huge rush at the grocery store. While trying not to burn pizzas, he pulled out his phone to make sure Siri actually started a timer for the oven.

That’s when his manager suddenly snapped at him for being on his phone and reminded him about “company policy.”

The problem is that company policy also said he deserved a full uninterrupted break, and he almost never took them.

So this time, he decided to take one.

Shirley Temple will have her revenge on Scottsdale

I work in the deli for Arizona’s town of Grover.

We just had a rough inspection, causing our deli manager, let’s call her Shirley, to have a wild hair up her butt, giving everyone in the deli a hard time every step of the way. There are so many steps, it’s getting annoying.

It’s insanely busy because of a unique combination of the TPC Waste Management Open Golf thing and our app offering free pizzas to about five percent of the app users.

The pizza timer was an issue.

I make the pizza, and up until recently, I had a tendency to burn a lot of them for two reasons: one it’s extremely busy (and therefore easy to lose track). And two, our timer for the oven being a little turn manual alarm that isn’t as loud as you would think.

It’s also near impossible to turn the dial for it to eight minutes forty five seconds. I had to start it at nine minutes and wait for fifteen seconds.

Anyway, I make three pizzas, put them in the oven, and say, “Hey Siri, set a timer for eight minutes 45 seconds.”

I don’t hear confirmation on the phone in my pocket, so I pull out my phone to confirm and lo-and-behold, I have to manually set the timer on my phone.

Then, the manager said the word ‘break.’

That very second, Shirley Temple saunters in and says, “Look at your phone on your BREAK!!! Company policyyyyy!”

I swear she curtsied after this.

This woman is off her rocker  screaming at me in a way I’d have to change the font size to demonstrate. Then right after, hits the emergency brakes and turns on her sweet voice. Katie kaboom 2.0.

The word BREAK echoed through my soul like Marcia Brady getting hit by a football.

That gave him a great idea.

I’m thinking BREAK?!

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that a) I never take breaks and b) the policy is that on a four hour shift or longer I get twenty uninterrupted minutes for break.

So, I get an idea.

I say, “Hey, thanks for reminding me! I never take my breaks. I’ve been here five hours so I better skedaddle. Company policy :). Oh and btw you have a pizza or three ready in OH (exaggeratedly looks at phone) about six minutes forty five seconds. See you in 20. “

He enjoyed his time, and got back to work.

I could only imagine what her face looked like, but I truly didn’t care.

I enjoyed my Ultra Zero Peechy Keen Monster in peechy peace while playing monopoly GO. Now and forever, I’m going to make this break thing a habit.

I could see a flurry of deli arms flying around from my table by the soda machine. I’d get the occasional glare from a customer in the line that is now backed up to almost where I am. All I can do is shrug my shoulders as if to say, “Company Policy.”

Good for him! Sometimes, all you have to do is walk away for a few minutes.

Today was my 22nd birthday, and it coincided with the day my roommate and good friend had their senior presentation.

Her parents were visiting our university today.

They wanted to make dinner for all five of us roommates, and when they found out it was my birthday, they thought it would be perfect to include that, too.

I don’t really know her parents at all, and I wanted to tell her that I didn’t want to spend my birthday with them.

This woman is unsure if she did the right thing.

It’s nothing against them, but that would also mean my other roommates would be bailing, too, since I wanted to go out to a bar.

I let them know before they went shopping and bought food so they could plan accordingly.

They also chose what food they were making without consulting me, and I don’t even like half of it.

AITA for not going to my roommate’s parents’ dinner that I wasn’t really a part of, while also taking away their guests?

I, personally, am not an advocate of limiting yourself to please others. Being polite is one thing, but never sacrifice your day doing something you don’t want to do. That dinner is meant to celebrate the roommate’s senior presentation, and your birthday is only a side note. I’m sure everyone would understand if you don’t want your birthday celebration to be overshadowed by your roommates’ success.

Great coworkers can leave a lasting impression.

The following story is about an employee who recalled working with a remarkable coworker who stood out from everyone else.

She demanded perfection as she worked as head housekeeper, while working alongside her staff, and even went above and beyond to help in unexpected situations.

Beyond her job, this housekeeper did other things that made her appreciated by the people around her.

Anybody who has been in the hotel business for even a short time knows that the employees can be almost as transient as the guests?

But sometimes they stick in memory, even decades later.

My most memorable co-worker was when I was very new to the front desk at a hotel in downtown Houston.

We had a head housekeeper who was just incredible.

Meet Mamacita…

We called her either Miss Paula or Mamacita.

Her staff would do anything for her, too. Not that she was easy to work for.

She expected every room to be perfect. As far as I remember, she got it.

I do not ever remember anybody coming back to the desk complaining of any cleaning issues.

She would be right in with her staff, too.

I remember this tiny woman in her 60s climbing a 25-foot ladder.

She did this to personally clean the crystals in the chandelier in the lobby.

This woman was thankful when Mamacita helped her set up a banquet room.

One evening, she helped me set up a banquet room for a function.

We had not been notified of it. She even rigged some beautiful centerpieces.

I will be darned if I know how. This part was an open secret.

I did not catch on until the second hotel where we worked together.

Mamacita also organized an informal English class for hotel staff.

Mamacita was very much in favor of keeping and honoring one’s own culture.

But she also arranged for anybody who wanted to attend informal English classes.

Twice a week, eight to ten of them would gather in one of the suite parlors for a couple of hours.

If the hotel was full, they would have the class downstairs in Mamacita’s office.

Our General Manager knew, but I am not sure very many others did.

I heard later on that she helped tutor for citizenship, too.

She will always remember how nice and thoughtful Mamacita was.

I will never forget that wonderful, wonderful lady.

She made a difference in many lives.

Including mine as a very wet-behind-the-ears front desk clerk.

I would love to hear other stories of memorable co-workers, bad or good.

Some people will really leave a mark on our lives, especially those who made a difference.

Mamacita was one of them, and she has proven that one can still be kind and genuine even in the workplace.
