AITA For Refusing to Help my Dad with his medical care

I come here to truly find out if I’m in the wrong.

For a brief backstory: my dad left our house about 6 years ago. My parents’ marriage fell apart after my mom found out about his most recent affair.

Her dad’s life continued to go downhill.

He moved out but stayed near the area until he lost his job a month after he left. He was fired for being drunk on the job. (He is a lifelong alcoholic, an important fact in this case.)

He then left and would come back at times to visit or drop off money for my little sister and mom.

At first, his estranged wife did her best to help him, despite everything.

During his visits, my mom would ask about his health and even took him to the cardiologist (in Mexico, we live close to the border) with my half brother, where he was told he had cirrhosis in his liver. That was about 5 years ago.

Over the years, my mom has asked him about his health and told him to get checked out.

On his most recent visit 3 months ago, he looked physically unwell, and my mom and I told him to stay with us so we could help get him some medical care.

But her father refused the help, which only worsened his condition.

He declined, saying he wanted to be in Mexico.

A week after he left, we got messages that his health had declined and his family needed money to help get him to the doctor. We found out he essentially only has 1% of his liver functioning.

Needless to say, he is not currently independent and needs round-the-clock care. The family in Mexico has been largely in charge of that.

Her family has really bent over backwards to care for this man.

Anyways, our family has sent approximately 10k over the course of the months. This has been a huge strain on us, but we did it to help our dad.

But her dad didn’t exactly return the favor.

However, last week we found out my dad had acquired several pieces of land. One he has sold for the equivalent of 35k USD that is being repaid in payments. One of the most recent payments was in the amount of 3k.

My dad has not disclosed this to us. It feels like he is betraying the trust we had in him to take care of his health.

This really doesn’t sit right with the daughter at all.

I understand it’s not my right as a child to know what he does with his money. But I can’t help but feel I’m being taken advantage of.

I refuse to send any more money until he uses all he has at his disposal.

So, AITA for not sending any more money?

This past Mother’s Day, I (M, 34)was the only person available on the actual date of Mother’s Day as my older and younger brothers(36 and 28) were going to be doing stuff with their families, and then we would do something with the entire family the following Thursday.

So on Sunday my dad, my mom and I went to a local Mexican restaurant, and I took care of the bill which came out to $54.

Then on Thursday we went to my mom’s favorite restaurant.

Here’s how dinner went.

I was one of the first to arrive and I sat down with the mindset of trying to sit next to my younger brother so we could talk, but I was told to by my mom to sit on the other side of the table so that my brothers and their families could sit together which resulted and me sitting next to my 2 nephews.

After dinner, my younger brother called from across the table(first time he spoke to me the entire night), and said “How do you want to split it?”

Here’s where I might be the jerk:

When he said that the first thing I said was “I already took mom out on Sunday.”

His brother didn’t even seem to know how to respond.

He just kind of stared at me, confused, so I repeated, “I already took mom out Sunday and paid $54.”

He just continued to stare at me, and I didn’t say anything back. Then I went to the restaurant while he took care of the bill on the tablet thing.

Here’s the thing, if I was told beforehand that we were going to split the bill I would’ve been fine with it, but to tell me when the check comes and it be the first and only thing you say to me the entire night rubbed me the wrong way.

So, am I a jerk?

I can see the perspective of having already paid, but really, like they said, they needed to discuss the payment situation before dinner instead of after the bill arrived.

Clearly, they both had completely different expectations.

I’m a young 23-year-old woman who is an early professional. I graduated college around a year ago.

I made this account solely to get advice on what to do.

I was working for a narcissist until Wednesday.

I got abruptly fired out of nowhere with no warning, no check-in, nothing.

This woman was logged out of all the accounts she was handling.

I do social media content marketing and got logged out of everything before an official termination notice.

I sent my boss my hours, and she pays me a paper check or Venmo. Yes, I know it’s sketchy.

She never enrolled me in direct deposit and said she was “switching banks.” The entire friggin’ time.

2.5 months… right before my big transition to salary and “benefits.”

She has refused to pay me unless I send her a detailed hour log explaining my hours and the content that was never posted.

She hasn’t been paid yet.

She also has threatened to ask the other staff if they felt I worked the hours I am claiming.

She said she would deduct hours upon that. I am not engaging nor replying.

It is now supposed to be my payday, and I haven’t been paid. No paystub has been submitted either.

My rent’s due on the first, of course. No money right now.

My husband works, but we really needed this paycheck. My husband doesn’t get paid till next week.

She plans to file a wage theft claim, but she already needs the money now.

What do I do?

I know I am going to file a wage theft complaint next week if she does not send my check, but I am freaking out.

Leaving a phone at a repair shop only works when the customer eventually returns for it.

Five months after dropping hers off, one woman finally called to ask where it had gone.

The shop had already waited triple its stated deadline and left five unanswered messages before liquidating the device.

Naturally, she blamed everyone else.

Where’s my Phone?

I work at a locally owned phone repair shop that does repairs anywhere from a screen to water-damaged fixes.

In our Terms of Service, which we require all customers to sign before working on their device, we state that any device left for more than 30 days is eligible to be liquidated.

This means we either sell the device or get rid of it. I’ll bet you can see where this is going.

So about a week ago, we get a call from a lady asking about her phone. We ask for her name in order to find the device.

After looking through the in-store repairs, we don’t see an order with her name on it, and ask when she brought it in.

It had been a while.

She says she left it with us on April 2nd.

I then go through the paperwork for April, and find her information.

On the top of the paper, it was written that we had attempted to call her twice in April, twice in May, and then one more time in June.

All 5 times, we had left a voicemail explaining what needed to be repaired, how much it cost, and our phone number to get back to us.

I then ask her if I can place her on hold while I talk to the manager, she says okay.

After talking to the manager, we came to the conclusion that the phone has obviously been liquidated at this point, as it is well past the 30-day limit we have.

She was surprised.

We’re often very lenient with the 30-day limit, and we understand that people are busy.

But it’s been 5 MONTHS since she dropped her phone off for repair, and we have certainly gotten rid of it.

I return to the call to tell her the unfortunate news, and she doesn’t take it well.

I explain how we had tried to contact her 5 times before finally liquidating it, and had instead waited 3 months instead of our 30-day limit.

I’m then told that she was out of the country on vacation for 4 months, and didn’t have access to the contact phone SHE LEFT US in order to get in touch if we needed to.

Things reach a boiling point.

She goes off on me, saying that there are business contacts and information on that device, and she NEEDS it.

I reiterate that there is nothing more that can be done, as the device has been liquidated and she had signed the Terms of Service.

She then tells me that she will be filing a police report. She demands to speak to a manager, and I hand the phone off.

Manager reiterates everything I’ve already told her, that she signed the Terms of Service, left it with us for 5 months, and it’s been liquidated.

Lady gets even angrier and hangs up on the manager.

The manager then gives our owner a heads-up call, letting him know that we may have a difficult customer on our hands for the next few days.

I’m honestly shocked that she would leave a repair with us, and then leave the country for 4 months.

She should worry less about where’s her phone and more about where’s her mind.

So, on Friday, as planned, I deleted my island and started over. I had the whole weekend off and ended up having a lot of fun.

Then today, a day later, I got a message from her saying she was ready now and how excited she was to get all the items I had promised.

I told her that, unfortunately, it was too late because I had already restarted the game.

Her friend was very disappointed and called her selfish.

She got super mad and said I was being selfish. That I knew she wanted my stuff and that I could’ve just waited.

When I reminded her that I told her exactly when I was planning to delete the island, she said I was overreacting.

She said I could’ve done it any other day and that taking a weekend off just to play was “ridiculous and embarrassing.”

I am a home health nurse. Most of my patients are elderly, disabled, and on a fixed income.

This is very generous of her.

There have been many times when I have helped them cover the copay on their prescriptions or bought them some groceries.

Since this consists of giving money to people, I cleared it with my husband, and I use the card for our shared checking account for complete transparency.

Well, this is suspicious.

I do not make unusual financial decisions unilaterally, even small ones.

Fast forward to a couple of days ago. We were looking at the map on his phone when a text came through from one of the medical assistants he works with (my husband is a doctor).

The text basically said that the raise he lobbied for her to get from the hospital hasn’t been enough to really help her, and can he please give her money again. AGAIN.

He is deflecting and maybe feeling guilty.

I knew nothing of this. When I expressed my surprise, my husband immediately became angry and defensive and said that she didn’t have money to feed her kids, and he can’t believe that I wouldn’t want him to help her out.

Keep in mind that I haven’t even said anything at this point other than, “What?”

If he truly believed that he needed to give this woman money, I would probably have supported him. But now all I see is the secret.

He claims it was $500 one time, and he just “forgot” to tell me about it. I did not see a cash withdrawal come out of our checking account for that amount of money, so that makes it feel even more like a secret to me.

He is clearly doing something that he shouldn’t, and he knows it. If he isn’t having an affair with her, he is still doing something wrong. The fact that he got upset when he got caught is even more suspicious.

Imagine living in a quiet neighborhood where kids sometimes play in the street. You’d know to watch out for children playing, but obviously the street is made for driving, so it’s not like you’re not going to drive down the street.

How fast do you think it would be safe to go down a residential street where kids might be playing?

In this story, that’s the issue up for debate. The speed limit is 25 miles per hour, but one neighbor drives much slower than that. However, the kids’ mom thinks he’s still driving too fast.

I live in a very quiet suburban neighborhood with lots of active neighbors (joggers, bikers, dog walkers, baby strollers, kids playing ball in the streets, etc).

The speed limit is 25mph, but when I see lots of foot traffic on the sidewalks, I bring it down to 15mph or even 10mph if I see a big group of kids playing in the street.

Here’s an example of how OP responds when he sees kids playing.

There’s this sweet group of kids who play basketball in the middle of the street eight doors down from my home.

When they see cars approaching, they move to the curb and wait for the cars to pass before resuming their game.

One day I was driving home from work and I saw the kids out playing, and their mother was on the front lawn talking with another adult.

I slowed down to 10mph and went to the complete opposite side of the street as I crept by.

But apparently he wasn’t driving slow enough.

A little while later she knocked on my door and complained about “how fast” I was driving and that I could have harmed her precious children.

I said, “The speed limit is 25mph, and I was going 10mph. How much slower do you want me to go??”

She said “I don’t care, just slow down or else I’m going to call the police! I have a doorbell camera so I can see you every time you drive by!”

Okay crazy lady, whatever you say!

He went as slow as possible.

The next day, the kids were outside playing in the street again. I slowly approached, came to a full stop, and then I took my foot off the brakes and let the car crawl at 1mph.

The kids stared at me all confused as it took me an entire minute to pass through their makeshift basketball court.

I continued to do this a few more times until one day the mother came and knocked on my car window as I was crawling by.

I lowered my window and asked if there was a problem.

It seems that nothing is good enough for this annoying neighbor.

She said “Why are you going so slow? Are you stalking my children?!?”

I said “No, of course not. You demanded that I slow down, so I am!” And I rolled up my window and went on my way.

She comes banging on my door again and says “Don’t get smart with me! Now you’re going TOO slow!”

I said “Are you saying that going 10mph is okay now? Because if you don’t like it, you can call the police.”

She huffed and crossed her arms and stomped off my porch.

Here’s the deal. The kids are playing in the street. OP is driving on the street. The kids need to watch out for cars. OP was watching out for the kids. If anything, the kids need to get out of the street.

Use-it-or-lose-it benefits become powerful when management blocks employees from scheduling the time they’ve earned.

A sixty-person department learned that no vacation requests would be approved throughout November or December, regardless of saved PTO.

That decision overlooked personal days, which couldn’t be denied, questioned, paid out, or carried into the next year.

Every Friday suddenly looked preeeeetty necessary.

So the company I worked for previously used to give us a set number of vacation days (12) and a set number of personal days (10).

Vacation days were obviously for vacations and planning; but it was made clear to us that personal days were essentially sick days: they weren’t for planning… more like you wake up sick and have to call out.

This is where it gets tricky…

Fine, whatever…the only problem with the personal days, is unlike vacation days, they would not roll over and you couldn’t get paid for them.

If you didn’t use them, you lost them.

Now here’s an important piece of information.

He knew he had to find his way around it…

HR policy prohibited managers from requesting doctors notes or even asking what you were taking a personal day for.

The only time that changed is if you were requesting something like short term disability or something.

So I’m working and like most people don’t make holiday plans too far out in advance. I saved up some PTO to use at the end of the year but not enough to take like both thanksgiving and Christmas.

That’s INSANE!

Then end of September comes around and management publishes a bulletin to the effect of “too many people requesting off…no PTO will be approved for all of November or December.”

Now obviously this didn’t go well with the department.

60 people on the team…many of which saved days to take around the holiday. And now we would either have to use our days in October or roll them over (max of 3 days)

It gets interesting…

Knowing the managers, I elected to use my days in october…no guarantee I would get to roll them over and use them.

And you might be thinking…ahh this is the malicious compliance….everybody took off in October.

Oh no my friends…you have forgotten about the personal days…which yours truly, as a healthy 25 year old, has in spades. 6 left to be exact.

Now cue malicious compliance.

He knew what to do!

Thanksgiving comes around, and I’m enjoying the holiday…but I think I ate too much.

Unfortunately, I’m goons have to call out black Friday… errr I mean today. I’m definitely NOT going shopping.

I call out the next Friday as well.

And the Friday after that.

Finally, the cherry on top!

At this point you can see a trend….my manager did too. calls me into her office to ask what’s up?

Obviously I play dumb. And she finally comes out and says “you’re calling out every Friday… why?”

“Personal days” I tell her.

“And this has nothing to do with your holiday PTO being rejected?” she asks.

That’s SWEET!

“Nope. I have accrued personal days and as of late, I really need them.”

There wasn’t a damn thing she could do, and the beautiful part was I wasn’t the only person doing it.

The company changed the PTO policy not long after.

Technology is great until it doesn’t work. Sometimes there are technical glitches that cause big problems.

In this story, one tenant had her rent payment set up to be paid via an electronic check from her bank, but the payment didn’t go through. As soon as she realized there was an error, she contacted the leasing office and offered to pay the rent immediately via a paper check.

She wasn’t exactly pleased with how the leasing office responded.

It looks like my bank returned my rent payment to me that I submitted to my landlord last Friday.

I called the leasing office about this and it turns out this hasn’t appeared in their system yet; it shows I have a zero balance.

So, I offered to bring in a money order immediately after our call so they could still receive their payment in anticipation of the ACH Return. Therefore they still receive the funds today either case.

But that wasn’t good enough for the leasing office.

However, they told me to include an extra $100, since the system will classify the payment as late.

Nope. Nevermind.

If you’re deciding to charge me a $100 late fee, I’m taking full advantage of it being “late” and will no longer be coming in to pay today.

I told them that. They can expect their payment on the “pay by” date of the eviction notice they file this month.

It’s too bad to be charged $100 late fee for a banking error. OP tried to make it right as soon as she realized the problem.
