People commonly ask about how large an animal can get, and the answer is that they can be pretty enormous, but there is a limit. There could never be an animal as large as Godzilla, for example.

This is because of the cube-square law, which shows that volume increases at a faster rate than area. Once an animal gets too big, their volume is just too much to sustain. An animal the size of Godzilla would need to consume far too many calories to support its body than it could actually get in through its mouth. That is even assuming its legs could somehow support the massive weight.

Even if an animal evolved to somehow overcome those issues, a mammal with that much volume would quickly overheat and die because its surface area could not get rid of heat fast enough. A reptile or other cold-blooded animal would likely freeze since the outside surface area could not get enough heat into the body.

So, that explains why animals (especially mammals) can’t become overly massive, but what about the other direction? How small can mammals be?

Well, there is a limit here as well and it is also due to the cube-square law. Scientists don’t know the exact minimum size that a mammal must be, but the Etruscan shrew (Suncus etruscus) is pretty close to that limit weighing just 1.8 grams (.063 ounces). It is as heavy as one playing card.

An extinct animal, the Batodonoides vanhouteni was slightly smaller at 1.3 grams (.046 ounces) and it is the smallest animal ever known. It is unlikely that any smaller ones will ever be discovered, at least not on Earth. Paul David Polly is a vertebrate paleontologist at Indiana University-Bloomington and also a Research Associate at the Field Museum in Chicago. He explained:

“The tiny Batodonoides was operating near the minimum size limit imposed by mammalian physiology. At this size, animals are hard-pressed to gather food fast enough to maintain a constant body temperature.”

These animals are very small and that means that they have a very small volume of mass compared to their surface area thanks to that cube-square law of nature. This means that they need to run a very fast metabolism to create enough heat to sustain their life.

The Etruscan shrew has been studied and it was found that their heart beats at a rate of 25 beats per second in order to keep up with its needs. It has to eat about 25 times per day and take in more than its body weight of food just to survive.

Fortunately, they typically live in an area where food is abundant and they reproduce extremely rapidly for mammals, which has allowed them to survive so far. Any significant change to their environment, however, could be trouble.

When you live in a neighborhood with an HOA, you need to follow the rules or you could get fined.

What would you do if rather than asking you to turn the music down, your neighbors just filed a complaint against you and got you fined?

That is what happened to the guy in this story, so he retaliated against his neighbor by making sure he got a complaint against his dog who was barking every morning.

My neighbor Todd has a Pomeranian named Buttons.

These dogs can be loud.

He isn’t the worst dog, just kind of loud sometimes. Barks when people walk by, or when Amazon drops off a package. Normal stuff.

Annoying if your home all day but not enough to get HOA involved.

People like this need to be careful that they aren’t violating the rules themselves.

Todd though is one of those HOA rulebook guys. Last month I got a letter saying id been reported for excessive noise.

Turns out Todd complained about me playing music in my garage every morning while I work. I wasn’t blasting it, just enough to drown out the outside noise.

Not having a warning is crazy.

HOA hit me with a $75 fine. No warning. So I bought this cheap rubber chicken that squeaks from Amazon.

Now, when Todd lets Buttons out to use the bathroom around 630 or 7 a.m., I go out to my garage with my coffee and rubber chicken and give it a good squeak.

This is too funny.

Buttons completely loses her mind! Not a couple barks but full on melt down! Running laps, barking non stop and wont calm down for at least 10 minutes.

After doing that just about every morning for a week straight Todd comes over and asks if I’m doing something to Buttons to get her worked up in the morning because he got a fine for chronic nuisance barking during quiet hours.

Filing reports can have consequences.

I told him I had no idea what he was talking about, while buttons was still going absolutely bonkers behind him.

When you go to a home improvement store, sometimes you need a cart to help bring larger items to your vehicle.

What would you do if you asked to use one, and the employee gave it to you but also charged you $18 for a 12-hour rental even though you only needed it a few minutes?

That is what happened to the shopper in this story, so he complained about it and the manager fired the worker, so now he feels bad that he complained.

I went to a nursery today and bought a stone sink basin.

It is a pretty reasonable request.

At the counter I asked if they have a cart or could help me get it in the car since the sink probably weighs about 80-90 lbs and parking was kinda far.

The cashier rolls out a pallet dolly for me but doesn’t offer to help, understandable since there were people in line behind me.

Oh, wow. This is unexpected.

I get the sink in the car and bring back the dolly and the guy is surprised. I realize through a quick exchange with him and confirm on the receipt that he’s charged me 18 bucks to rent the dolly for 12 hours.

I say no no no, I just needed it for here, on the store property, to get it in the car. But he says ‘it’s done.’ and then turns to the next customer.

Yeah, I wouldn’t want to pay for the use of a cart for a few minutes.

I wait for the customer to finish and then it’s just me and the cashier and I tell him I’d like to return the sink I just bought.

His body language basically says it all, I’m sure mine showed I was angry too since I really was getting upset and I had just got off work and had sweat dripping down my back.

Why are they so upset about a very reasonable request.

He says he’ll have to go ask about it and heads in the office. I hear some guys yelling but can’t make out anything specific.

The cashier storms out not wearing the company apron anymore and kicks some yard sculpture bunny thing on the way out and slams the walk gate.

It sounds like this was the last straw against a bad employee.

The manager, I assume, came out then. He asked me what happened then popped the register and gave me a cash refund for the $18 and I left… but I’m a bit shook.

I never thought each step of this would escalate like it did. I don’t think I was in the wrong but if I knew the guy would get fired or quit or whatever I might of just let it go.

No, the employee was out of line and this was definitely not the first time he got in trouble.

Good friends can be a major blessing throughout your life, but when one of them marries someone who you don’t like, it can cause problems.

That is what happened to the friend group in this story, so rather than buying the wedding gifts that the woman wanted, they all got their friend gifts that only he would like, knowing that it would upset her.

So, one of my good friends married the worst person!

It is always disappointing when a loved one marries someone who isn’t a good person.

Background the first time I met her, she came off as very arrogant. My friend invited the new girl he was dating to trivia night at the pub we regular at.

She argued every answer the group agreed on. Normally, our group finishes trivia night in the top 3, there’s was at the time 7 of us, and our combined knowledge pretty much covered all categories.

How disappointing.

This night was special for us because we were on a 4 week win streak, about to break the old one.

The pub had a rule that you broke the streak you tab was covered for the whole night, and 4 was the streak for the last 3 years!

They take trivia seriously.

My friend and his new gf missed the first 2 of the 3 rounds. We were in first place by only 3 points. How trivia worked at the bar was they had three round of 30 questions that were displayed on the TV for 1 minute.

No cell phone rule, the staff monitored, if they saw a cell phone at the table, they grabbed your sheet and you were out for that round, even if it was off and just sitting at the table. They had really cool prizes every week!

Oh, I would be very upset.

Anyhow, my friend and his gf showed up for the last round. As I said, she argued every group decided answer, at the end of that round, we were confident we had every question right.

Our mistake was my friend’s new gf said she’d hand in the sheet. The host, at the end, hands or sheet back , says we’d have won if we didn’t change our first answers.

This is just unacceptable.

We were like, what? He hands the sheet back, and a bunch of our answers are crossed out and changed. Everyone at the table looks at my friend’s gf.

She was like, “I thought I was right, and you guys were wrong on most of the answers, so I changed them. The pub never recovered after covid and shutdown, so the streak was never beat!

How could she get worse than that?

Year went by, and she only got worse! Anyways this is a petty revenge story, not my friend terrible wife story, so I’m going to fast forward to their wedding gifts!

She controlled everything on the wedding my friend had to argue that she couldn’t choose his groomsmen, she literally told him he can pick his best man, but the his six groomsmen had to be her 3 brothers, two cousins, and a college friend of hers.

He is in for a terrible marriage.

The only time he stood up to her and said no, if I couldn’t choose my groomsmen wedding off.

Anyhow, after that drama, and getting the message that I’m a groomsmen. I get an email and a voice message from his fiancé.

It is normal to have a registry, but not to require people to use it.

All gift have to be off their wedding registry or a minimum of 300 dollars in cash or gift cards of her selected stores… most of them were for her dogs, like spas, groomers, or apparently dog hotels?

Anyhow I’m a giant nerd and 6 month before the wedding I was at a comic book convention, my friend is a big star wars fan and Mark Hamill was there so my wedding gift was a rebel helmet signed by Mark Hamill.

Hopefully everyone gets in on it.

I told the groomsmen what I bought, and it spread like wildfire. Apparently, my friends’ side of the family didn’t like her, and a lot of mutual friends hated the $300 minimum limit.

I missed the gift opening because I was hungover, but I found out when I woke up that more than 50% of the gifts for the wedding were Star War memorabilia and collectors items.

Good, just what she deserved.

My friends wife apparently had a mental breakdown!

Unfortunately, they’re still married, but my friend has a cool man cave in the basement full of Star War memorabilia!

I worked for a few years at a branch of a bank in Toronto. It was a total failure because it was clear our division was going down the drain and would be sold off.

The director took a bizarre position on a cost cutting program that head office had going.

The mind boggling overhaul made no sense.

They wanted all divisions to cut back on voicemail, network storage and email storage. So, head office had a spreadsheet of the metrics of this cost cutting, the director laid down the law and wanted deep cuts so our little division appeared at the top of that spreadsheet.

The thing was, i worked on small projects which were often repetitive so i reused a great deal of information and files from previous projects. This even included voice mail from clients.

He’s wary of participating.

This information all had to go. This sounded nuts. I told my manager, who was a real suck up and never question directives. He knew this was a stupid idea but wouldn’t admit it.

I took a quick pass on everything. I seldom deleted emails, so this was a good idea. I purged as much as I could. Turns out I was one of the biggest users and now they are making this out to be a problem. Which my boss pointed out in my quarterly review (Only company I knew that had quarterly reviews).

What happened next got him taking them literally.

They…bring up…in..a review…my..voicemail…storage.

That was it, i purged all my voicemail, email and file storage (no local storage) . I printed out hundreds of pages until my boss noticed (micromanager) and put a stop it.

Then new projects came up, critical of project planning and i increased my estimates by 10%, which angered my manager. I stepped him through the steps required. Tell me I’m wrong?

What do you suggest? I asked.

Then he used all his working time on their ridiculous orders.

They said to just make it up within the tolerances. Except that it will take me longer. Oh well.

Of course, I had all the requirements annotated, over 300 pages. That will take time to review.

Oh, this will end up in my quarterly review?

i never made it and found a new job.

It is nice to be close to your family, but sometimes it can be overbearing if they have no boundaries.

What would you do if your mother was upset that you didn’t check in often enough (even though you are an adult), so she posted about your job online and got you fired?

That is what happened to the guy in this story, so when the family wouldn’t apologize, he has cut them off completely, but he feels bad about it.

AITAH for going no contact with my parents after they got me fired from my job and defended my sister for taking their side instead of mine?

I (24M) graduated from college a year ago and has now gotten an office job on my country’s capital, which is 2 hours away from my hometown.

Sounds like he is doing good work.

During college, I was recruited by a tutoring center, where I tutored my juniors materials that they struggle with on my free time. Even after I graduated, I was still contacted from time to time by their admin to teach classes and I’d take them if I could.

I was paid hourly and while the pay isn’t as big as you’d expect from private tutoring, I never complained because I love teaching.

It is nice to keep busy.

Last December nearing the end of the term on my campus (I’ve already worked on my office role by then), the tutoring center was flooded by requests and I was asked to fulfill some of them, which I did.

My working hours on my main job was from 9 AM to 6 PM, and back then I’d tutored from 7 PM up to 11 PM for 2 weeks or so.

This is an odd requirement for an adult.

This is where the issue starts to come up. My parents, mostly my mom (53F), required both me and my sister to check-in on the family WhatsApp group every morning, afternoon, and evening.

As much as I hate to do them since I think it’s a bit overbearing, I’d still do them because well, I didn’t really have much to lose.

He needs to put some firm boundaries in place with the family.

The problem is, if I missed two or more check-ins in a row, my mom would throw a tantrum in the group and start guilt-tripping by saying things like, “I’ve sacrificed everything for you and you can’t do a little check-in for me? You’re unbelievable.”, even though I explained to her that by that day I was busy.

Anyways, during the tutor peak season, since my schedules are packed (and even though I’ve explained my schedule to my parents), I couldn’t give the check-in timely (they expect me to give an update by 9 PM or so, because they thought by that time I should’ve been at home).

It is really none of his mom’s business.

As you might expect, my mom was upset at this and asked why did I spent long hours teaching. Quoting her own words, “Do you really need money that much?”.

I said, “No, it’s just that I like teaching plus I get the bonus of honing my coding skills because I majored in IT during college”.

Wow, mom is really out of line.

After some back and forth, my mom asked for my pay slip when I got paid later on the end of the month because she wants to know how much did I get after “breaking my back”. Her words, not mine.

I received my paycheck and sent the pay slip to my parents, being the dumb, naive kid that I was. Honestly the amount wasn’t much but I enjoyed teaching so I didn’t think much of it and just moved on with my day.

I would be so upset about this.

Imagine my surprise when suddenly the tutor center’s admin messaged me on WhatsApp attaching a Threads post with my pay slip on it. Basically, my mom posted my pay slip on Threads and complaining that “teachers are unpaid in this country, my son deserves a better salary” and more.

The post got viral and that’s how the admin caught wind of it. Technically speaking, I wasn’t fired, but they stopped reaching out with offers to teach and communicating with me, so it’s more like a quiet firing I guess.

He has every right to be upset with them.

I was livid with my parents. Granted, my mom did apologize initially but my father (56M) and my sister (20F) defended her actions and start blaming me instead.

They tell me that I got worked up over nothing, and to quote them, “Since you’re smart, you can just find some kids to privately tutor them for better salary”. I told them that it’s not just about the money, but it’s also about the relationship that I’ve maintained for the last 3 years.

I was in such good terms with them that they invited me as a guest for their new office branch opening event at one point.

Some families are unbelievable.

The argument got so bad that at my father’s retirement and birthday party, my sister completely refused to talk to me or acknowledge my presence even though I tried to talk to her to make peace.

The situation messed with my head enough that I couldn’t focus on any work that I’m doing. So, I went back to my hometown and had a heated argument with my parents accompanied by my girlfriend (24F).

How do they not see that they are in the wrong.

At the beginning, they were so firm that they didn’t make any mistake, not with the post itself nor the fact they also posted other stuff about me in that account without my consent or permission.

They start calling me overreacting and that I can just find other kids to tutor. It was so bad that my girlfriend had to gag me with her hand to prevent me from cursing them out loud.

This isn’t even a real apology.

In the end, they only apologized when I completely broken down in tears. At this point, I genuinely thought that the issue is solved and all I asked from them is to ask my sister to apologize to me because my sister blocked me at the time.

But later that night, my mother tried to reach out to my girlfriend behind my back to take my mother’s side in the conflict. She mentioned that my sister absolutely refused to apologize and that she agreed with her.

They are being manipulative.

She even claimed that my girlfriend supports my words and curses when she gagged my mouth. Understandably, my girlfriend didn’t bite the bait but she tried to be civil about it even though my mother’s text was increasingly harsh with every bubble chat.

At some point, my mother brought up my girlfriend’s family dark past to reason with her. She even brought up every item and thing she has purchased for my girlfriend, as if my girlfriend owes her.

Time to cut off the family.

Obviously, my girlfriend is mad too but, bless her heart, she kept the conversation mostly civil. This goes on until my mom told her that my sister actually don’t need my girlfriend but the other way around because it’s my girlfriend that wants to enter the family.

At this point, my girlfriend cuts off the communication with my mom and they haven’t talked since.

Not a bad idea.

At this point, I was so tired and furious at my parents that I decided to go no contact with them. Here is where I ask for your help and judgement.

My mom at one point spammed my phone during work and sent messages at 2 AM that I should “be the bigger man”, that “I’m still young and clueless”, and that “I would ruin my marriage if I do things like this”, which honestly ruined the mood when I read them in the morning.

He can get copies of important documents, no big deal.

She mentioned that she kept my university diploma and other documents hostage (passport, birth certificate, family registry) and that I’d have to shamefully returned to my hometown to retrieve them.

It’s been one month since I’ve gone no contact and the emotional burden is also eating me away everyday, because not a day goes by without me feeling guilty for going no contact with them.

There is no reason for him to feel bad.

But the thought of having to go back to them and being lied to again, or manipulated again is just even worse.

AITA?

No way, they are beyond out of line. If they can’t realize that then there is no point in getting back in touch.

We used to fight a lot, and being left alone was even worse — because that meant she could do whatever she wanted to me and still get away with it since I had no proof.

But one day, her sister did something especially cruel.

This fine day, however, when my sister slapped me across my face, I decided I had had enough.

Now, the slap was hard enough to leave some redness behind, but I knew that would disappear before my parents came home.

That’s when this kid decided she’d stop at nothing to get her sister in trouble.

So, being petty as ever, I kept slapping myself in the same spot at intervals to make sure the redness stayed for my parents to see.

Needless to say, my plan was successful — special shout-out to the crocodile tears.

Her plan worked like a charm!

My sister got a good scolding and didn’t hit me again — for a while.

Bet her sister wishes she would have been a bit more gentle.

Hired Into a Redundant Department

I started a job as an Accounting Manager and on my 7th day was brought into a meeting with the owner, the Ops Managers, and HR.

Then they informed me that they found an outside firm to outsource the accounting function to.

Any loyalty he had left just spiraled down the drain.

The owner claimed that accounting spend was too high and this firm can do it for cheaper.

Cheap work isn’t good and good work isn’t cheap.

They fired the other two people in the department and asked me to stay on until I am “no longer needed” by the outside firm.

They had no clear answers about anything and told me to trust their actions, not just their words.

But he wasn’t going to do that.

I just watched them interview me, offer me a job, onboard me, just to gut my entire dept and tell me my job is also on the line and dependent upon an outside firm?

Also, these engagements take a while to set up so they presumably knew this was going to happen while interviewing me.

This next move was ice cold.

The next day I came in and access to everything was locked.

I was going to have to go through HR and they’d grant me access or not.

The Ops Manager came in smiling and asking me how I was and seemed genuinely shocked when I said not well.

But he didn’t get mad. He got even.

He spun a yarn and did the corporate double speak, instead of accounting being expensive it’s now just “restructuring” the dept.

For better or worse for myself I just walked out and am ignoring them.

The worst part of this all is that they SOUGHT ME OUT for this role. I didn’t even apply. Who does this to people?
