It can be tempting to ignore policy, or even the law, to make things more convenient, but it might cause problems down the road.

That is what happened in this story when the manager of a store sold some cigarettes to a customer who didn’t have the proper ID.

Some time later, when she came back to buy again, this employee refused to sell them to her because she didn’t have the right ID. The customer demanded the cigarettes since the manager had sold them to her in the past, and when she didn’t get them, she became violent.

Manager broke the law, I suffered the repercussions.

I had a 3 hour shift tonight, and spent most of it in the express box.

A short shift like that is hardly worth the effort.

I restocked and organized the cigarette drawers after someone messed with it, and made it all pretty. Small shift, but whatever, it was $60.

The government just raised the prices on most of the products, so I had to deal with a lot of angry customers who somehow thought I was behind it. Only a couple of people who needed to show me ID.

What even is a ‘proof of age card’?

I haven’t had to turn away many people due to not having any ID when I’ve asked for it, but almost all of them have left without a fuss, and came back with their ID.

This one, however, she walks up, asking for her brand and strength, and I ask for ID. She presents a proof of age card.

We have several acceptable ID’s that we take. Driver’s licenses, passports, photo cards. But, we don’t accept proof of age cards. Don’t ask me why, I’ve no clue.

Just because someone else let it pass doesn’t mean she has to.

Me: “Sorry, we can’t use that card to sell cigarettes to you.”

Customer: “What? I used it here two days ago – the manager said it was okay.”

I looked at the guidelines again, double checking. Nope. NSW doesn’t accept proof of age cards.

Even if the manager allowed it, she won’t.

Me: “It says here that we legally can’t accept it. I’m sorry.”

Customer: “Look, the manager sold cigarettes to me. Why can’t you take it now?”

Getting upset isn’t going to get her the cigarettes.

Me: “We’ve never been allowed to take them. Whomever accepted it violated the law, but I don’t want to risk a fine or losing my job. I’m sorry.”

Customer: “IT WORKED TWO DAYS AGO. GIVE ME MY SMOKES, YOU *****.”

Me: “I’m sorry. I can’t sell it to you.”

Wow, this escalated quickly.

I serve the next customer waiting, whilst she gets on the phone to someone and curses me out to whoever’s on the other end.

I grab his pack of cigarettes from the drawer, and suddenly, there’s two hands clamped around my arm and wrist, trying to get the packet out of my hand.

She’s screaming and spitting at my face, yanking at my arm and punching me in the head.

This could have been worse.

I ended up being pulled up and almost over the counter before other customers helped her let me go.

Aside from a massive scare, a headache, and a few scratches and bruises on my arm, ribs and hips, I think I’m okay.

That customer needs to be in jail.

She ran for it, but we were told to call the police if she shows up again. She has apparently been banned a few times by the store for aggressive behavior.

I have a shift tomorrow, but I seriously don’t think I’m up for it. I’m still shaking.

What a crazy story. Nobody should be assaulted just for doing their job.

When a school gets grant money or other funding, it often leads to a major upgrade to the environment, which doesn’t always go as smoothly as people would like.

That was the case in this story where a school was installing a brand new WiFi system and projectors for the teachers that would let them teach much more effectively.

Of course, there were problems right from the beginning, but thanks to the effort of the tech support team, they were able to be overcome.

Tales From the District: Achievement is Not Tied to Money (The Projector Project)

Those reading today’s post may have noted my critical stance on the ultra-high-super-priority school program implemented by the school Superintendent in order to boost test scores in poor performance schools.

Let’s see what this is all about.

This tale is about my favorite school from that district: A high-minority, 90% Title I (low income, free-lunch program) school that was the #2 school in the entire district for test scores.

I know what some of you might be thinking: What does this have to do with tech support? Well, the secret to their success (in part) was Classroom technology integration.

The principal wants to update their technology, that is good.

“Wireless.” The principal is sitting at her desk, smiling at me. She requested to meet with me today before I went on my typical repair rounds.

She was young, highly intelligent, and also one of my favorite principals for the schools under my support umbrella.

Do you need wireless if you don’t have laptops or tablets?

“Wireless? We don’t have that implemented yet. What exactly are you wanting to do?”

I was a bit skeptical. They didn’t have much in the way of laptops at the school, and I didn’t see what putting wireless there would accomplish.

Ok, that seems like a smart setup.

It turns out, she had a plan. A good one, at that. The school was built in a style that had four classrooms in a “pod” (what they called them).

Basically, the hallways would lead to a secondary hallway, which was like a “lobby” of sorts. Each “lobby” would have a color LaserJet printer, and doors to four classrooms and a “support” room, such as a janitor’s closet or storage room.

The plan was simple: We put wireless APs out in each pod, then the teachers would be provided with HP Tablet Computers. In addition, all the classrooms would be equipped with networkable projectors.

There is always a problem.

They had the funding, as the principal had found and applied for a grant that would give them additional funds for integrating the technology into the classroom, and it was approved.

It was awesome– I love new technology, and I’d be at the ground floor of this project, which means I can get it done right from the beginning. But there, as always, was a problem– they ended up having to hire a contractor to do the wireless installation.

Oh well, sometimes you have to live with things like this.

This did not please me. Contractors suck. They always do things in a way that seem psychotic and cause more problems than solve.

But, I have no say in the matter, so the contractor installs the wireless APs out in the pods, and I run through and set up all the projectors in the classrooms after the plumbers and carpenters from facilities came by and installed mounting points for them.

Things seem to be progressing smoothly, so far.

Plumbers, you ask? Well, it kind of made sense– they had metal pipes, and the equipment to cut said metal pipes, and the equipment to thread said cut metal pipes. So, the plumbers would make the pipes, then the carpenters would mount them into the ceiling.

I get everything set up, and I’m given a box containing a bunch of USB wireless dongles for projectors. I install them on all the projectors, hook them up, and get things running.

Technology rarely runs smoothly right from the start.

Things were working ok. Pod 1 was working really well, and I had all four teachers with tablets and projectors going.

Of course, this would not be an interesting story if it was, “I installed it, it all worked perfectly, and the school was awesome.”

After finishing the rest of the school, I would get frequent callouts there with problems with the wireless. It was dropping a lot, the projectors were having issues staying connected, and various other problems.

At least they were able to narrow down the problem.

I reconfigured the APs, and did as much as I could to get it fixed up. It improved slightly, but it wasn’t helping much.

Finally, I had Extremely Competent Tech come by and help me out with testing things. After a couple of hours of work, we finally figured out the issue: The APs sucked.

They were Linksys routers with non-standard firmware to make them act more like APs than routers. We ran to Chips, the local giant computer parts retailer, and grabbed a cheap $15 router.

Progress is being made, and it isn’t costing to much.

After configuring this router, we turned it on. Over the next couple of weeks, the complaints remained the same for pods 2-5, but pod 1 was extremely stable.

Pleased with the solution, I bought enough routers to cover the rest of the pods, and did the same configuration changes to them.

Keep on troubleshooting.

Things improved quite a lot, but there was still issues with the projectors freezing up and disconnecting during high usage times.

I investigated the bandwidth usage– 100% when all the projectors were running, and since they all connected via 802.11G, they didn’t have much.

More research, and then I discover– these projectors have an alternative dongle. I have the school order four of them and place them out in pod 1.

Great, problem solved.

They worked perfectly from then on. The teachers were quite pleased. Seeing this result, the rest were ordered for the school, and all of the projectors were converted over.

What magical solution was this? Ethernet dongles. The contractor was using PoE injectors to get power to the APs, so we already had a long ethernet cord going up to the APs.

Adding an additional cord to go to the projector from the AP was a minor thing, and due to the extra bandwidth provided by ethernet, the connections stabilized.

What is phase two of this project?

All the teachers now had a free-floating laptop with a stylus that could be used to project anything through the network onto the projectors. The teachers were pleased, the students loved it… and the test scores started going up.

This wasn’t the only factor, of course, but one of many. Rather than deciding that money being thrown at the school to fix the problems would work, the principal had a multi-part plan that would fix it all:

These are all essential things for a good school.

• Intervention programs. When a teacher found a student was struggling, the school had programs in place to allow for additional tutoring and assistance to be rendered.
• Parental involvement. Even though the school was low-income, the principal had encouraged, quite heavily, parents to participate in the school. Because of this, parental involvement was quite high, and when parents are involved, they become more invested in their child’s performance.

Teachers who love their jobs are invaluable.

• Awesome school culture. Teachers LOVED working there. I loved working there. The staff loved working there, and the students loved attending there– the culture at that school was the best I had encountered, and I think it was partially responsible for the test scores, since happy people make for better learning environments. In addition to this, except for one teacher who replaced someone that had retired, all the teachers were working in that school for at least 5 years. They knew the school. They knew the students.

Technology is jus tone piece of the puzzle.

• Technology integration. The teachers were encouraged to use computers whenever possible in their instructions. Every classroom had at least 3 computers in each room for students to use during class time, and the projectors and tablet computers added to the technology integrated there. This school was one of the least techno-phobic I had encountered, and I believe it helped immensely.

Money doesn’t fix schools, smart use of money does.

This school had won multiple state recognition awards for its performance– and its budget was not any higher than schools with similar demographics and attendance numbers.

Good leadership and wise spending decisions make all the difference, and without those, this school very well could have been an Ultra-Super-High-Priority school that the Superintendent thought would need “improvement.”

This sounds like a wonderful school that operates wisely. And the results speak for themselves.

AITAH for not taking turns walking our half sister home so my stepsister can do stuff after school?

My stepsister (f15) really wants to join cheer this year, but practice is 3 times a week after school and she wouldn’t be able to do it because she has to walk our half sister (f6) home from school (we don’t have school buses).

It shouldn’t be her responsibility, but sometimes families have to band together.

If she doesn’t walk our half sister home she gets grounded and won’t get an allowance. My stepsister said that my dad and her mom said they if she could get me to do it for her on those days then it would be okay for her to do cheer.

Driving would be a lot more convenient.

Honestly, I (f16) really don’t want to do it. Especially because I had planned on finally driving to and from school since my mom and stepdad finally bought me a car. Which is awesome because it means I won’t have to carry my stuff (including my trombone) to school and home everyday.

I also won’t have to leave as early to make sure I get to school on time.

Ahh yes, there are restrictions on new drivers.

But I’m not allowed to drive anyone (including my half-sister) in my car. That was one of the rules in exchange for getting me the car because I am a new driver and they don’t want me to have any distractions.

So, I wouldn’t be able to drive my half sister home. So, I would have to walk from my school to pick her up, walk her home, then walk back back to my school to get my car.

Yeah, that is a big waste of time and energy.

That just seems ridiculous and a waste of time though. So, it would make more sense for me to continue walking to and from school like before. Except that sucks because my half sisters school is even further away from my mom’s house (where I live).

Plus I would also like to sign up for extracurriculars. I’m not exactly sure which ones yet, but I would be limited to just two days a week, while my stepsister would get three days a week.

This sounds like a very difficult situation all around.

She says that’s even still unfair to her since she’s had to walk our half sister home by herself all last year and I didn’t at all.

So, she says she’s being nice by letting me have two days since our half sister is just as much my sister as she is hers, so I should be helping out more anyway.

AITA if I say no?

This is a very challenging situation. Can the half-sister come to their school and wait there until the older siblings get out of their activities? Or can the parents help sometimes?

My(20F) dad(45M) had decided to get re-married to a woman(35F) who disliked my sister(29F) purely because she was from a past marriage and not actually “his daughter”.

He had been in her life and raised her since she was 8 years old.

This woman that I had met once had asked me to be one of her bridesmaids which i said yes.

Later my dad messaged me asking if it would be weird if my sister had attended the wedding which i immediately responded no.

Her sister had no hard feelings.

My sister and I were both excited for him that he had found someone that he cared so deeply for.

He originally said my sister could come but couldn’t be in pictures because it made his fiancé uncomfortable.

She agreed to come and was fine with it.

But now, her sister is upset.

A few months later he text my sister that “decisions had to be made about attendance at the wedding. unfortunately you will not be able to attend. I appreciate your understanding.”

After this my sister was extremely upset and felt like she lost the main father figure in her life.

When hearing this I was hurt for my sister and got in many fights with my dad with him saying that this is my fiancé’s special day and how dare i try to ruin it.

She sided with her sister.

After this was said i told him that i would no longer be attending his wedding let alone be a bridesmaid.

AITA? 6 months have past since the wedding and he still refuses to talk to me and have had his side of the family call me and tell me i’m overreacting which i feel that i am not.

Property lines might seem like a technicality, but disrespecting them can have some serious consequences.

One homeowner discovered a 30-foot stretch of gas line running across his property, installed by his neighbor for a BBQ setup, tucked away neatly enough that it wasn’t causing any visible problems.

When he brought it up, his neighbor pushed back hard, insisting everything was properly permitted and approved by both his inspector and gas fitter.

That confidence didn’t match what the actual property survey showed, which listed no gas line right of way anywhere near that spot.

I’m on a zero lot line, and my neighbour ran a 30ft stretch of gas line for his BBQ on my property side. It’s neatly tucked away and doesn’t affect me in any way.

Over a year ago, I changed my name. Basically, it’s as if I changed my name from July to June, it’s only off by two letters.

Kids cause trouble sometimes, and that is fine, as long as their parents take note and teach them not to do it again.

The retail worker in this story, however, noticed that not all parents do this. One day, she had one mother come in and let her kids run wild, causing problems by trying to mess with the tablets.

Just after that, another parent came in and kept a close eye on her kids. When one of them caused an issue, she reprimanded the child and made her apologize. The worker made sure to give the good parent a discount upon checkout.

At my old employer, we sold tablets. Their tablets have a sticky bungee cord that produces an ear piercing scream if disturbed a certain way.

Some parents love leaving their kids alone in stores, even though they shouldn’t.

This one tablet screamed ALL the time. This all happened within an hour of each other.

Enter white alpha mom and her spawn. Spawn is left in my department to be babysat by me (I love kids, so whatever) and our tablets.

Kids can be clueless.

Now this kid kept pulling on the tablet, making the alarm sound. I would have to stop what I’m doing, and run over to turn it off before upper management comes down guns blazing.

He would just stare at me all bewildered that it sounded, so I finally looked him in the eye and said, “Little dude. If you keep messing with our tablets you’ll make the alarm sound. So…”.

Nobody will miss this woman as a customer.

Alpha soccer mom did NOT like this and grabbed her little angel and huffed about how she’s only shopping with our electronics competitors because “they let my son try out merchandise”.

Sorry, I’m not getting paid enough to do two jobs + watch your son.

This mom isn’t going to let her kids cause problems.

An hour later, enter alpha black mom and her three daughters. ABM and her two older daughters were asking me about a certain product one of the girls wanted for Christmas.

All of a sudden, the alarm sounds, and the little girl just stood their frozen in fear. Her mom immediately turned around and demanded her daughter stop and stand beside her.

Good parents get rewarded.

ABM also made me daughter apologize to me, to which I chuckled. I told ABM of the other parents and thanked her for being an awesome parent to three adorable girls.

She was so happy, I used my personal discount on her purchase.

Not all parenting strategies are equal, and in this case it is clear that one was better than the other.

When you live in an HOA, you’re signing up to follow a lot of rules, but what’s even worse is that sometimes HOAs seems to make up rules as they go and expect the homeowners to comply.

That’s what happened in this story. The HOA sent out a letter with a new demand. They wanted the homeowners to paint their houses. Their reasoning wasn’t very solid, and the homeowners weren’t very happy about the demand.

My HOA in the last neighborhood sent out a letter saying everyone needs to have their house painted this summer because the neighborhood is looking “a little dull”.

The next letter that came was a petition from someone in the neighorhood that they wanted everyone to sign and tell the HOA that more than half of the neighborhood hasn’t fiscally recovered from Covid and that they can essentially go hurt themselves.

It was a non-issue for OP.

I was renting so the paint wouldn’t have been my problem anyway.

But it’s just ludicrous to me that people who run these awful Karen commissions think that they can just do this kind of stuff.

I feel for the homeowner who started the petition, but seriously, shouldn’t these things be voted on before being mandated by the HOA board? Perhaps the homeowners need to start attending the board meetings.

Just because someone will do something for you doesn’t always mean you should ask.

That was the issue one woman ran into while shopping at the supermarket with her mom.

It all started when her mom realized she had forgotten an item. But rather than stepping out of line to grab it herself, she asked the bagger to go get it.

That already didn’t sit right with her daughter, especially since other people were waiting behind them.

But when the bagger came back, her mom decided she didn’t even want the item anymore. And that’s where her daughter drew the line.

I was at the supermarket with my mom when she realized she forgot an item. If it were me in this situation, I would step out of line to go and get the item if it was important enough. But my mother decided to ask the bagger to go and get it for her.

I was just shocked. I told her that she should go get it herself or not get it at all since she is the one who forgot it.

There was a small line behind us, and we all had to wait for this poor bagger to run into the store and return with her item (which she was getting for free with a coupon, btw).

She tried to bring it up again in the car.

But this is the kicker: SHE DECIDED NOT TO GET THE ITEM!

Maybe this is just me, but if I made some dude go get something for me that I decided I didn’t want (and was getting for free), I would take it anyway.

I mentioned it again in the car, but she said that she can ask them to do that. I said I’m sure they would do it for you because the “customer is always right,” but I don’t think it’s customary or called for.

Now, her mom is pretty upset with her.

We got into this whole big argument. She said I should just crucify her already. I said I’m just not sure she should have done that and asked her not to be so upset with me.

She yelled back, “I’m the bad guy now? I wouldn’t have asked him to do that if I wasn’t able to!”

She was pretty upset by the end of it. Maybe this is just something you can do and I wasn’t aware.

One day, I went to Rite Aid to buy ******* and a morning-after pill. There was a jovial black guy working there, having a good time with his co-workers and making a lot of jokes.

It’s always a little weird when you have to buy items like these, and there’s always that elephant in the room when you go up to the register.

I appreciate when cashiers don’t make comments and keep it professional in these situations.

Rather than laugh, he just looked at the guy.

So anyway, I go up to the register to buy these items, and the jovial black guy says something like, “Well, hello, looks like you’ll be having a good time tonight!!”

He looks at me. I seem like a chill dude, and he expects me to laugh along with him. In the spur of the moment, I decided to give him a death stare and totally kill the mood for him.

I can tell that his failed attempt to make a joke really embarrassed him. He started to sulk and frown and stopped joking with his coworkers.

Really, he wasn’t even that offended.

Then I thought to myself, dang, it wasn’t really that big a deal. I didn’t want to ruin his mood or anything.

In reality, I wasn’t as offended as my death stare let on. Maybe a 2 out of 10 on the offended scale.

But then again, I don’t want to live in a world where cashiers feel comfortable making comments about customers’ purchases.

This house is very close to ours. The driveway is right by our bedroom windows.

I truly don’t understand why this is allowed to happen.

Hotels and businesses can’t operate in a residential neighborhood, but this is okay?

As far as I can tell, my town doesn’t have any laws prohibiting this.

So now, we will have new people “living” right next to us every week.

The stress of worrying about who will “live” there every week is making me sick to my stomach.
