“I booked a single room at a resort where a family event is happening, as I am single without a traveling companion.

This resort is all-inclusive, and it doesn’t matter what kind of room you book. It is the same price across the board. They charge by the person, not by the room.

My cousin, who I am close with, called to book a room and apparently there was only a room that sleeps 6 people left so she booked that room.

What…?

She is bringing her boyfriend on the trip. She invited her brother (also my cousin), and he has decided to come on the trip.

We are not sure if there are enough rooms to accommodate him getting his own room.

She asked me if I would be willing to switch her rooms and share a room with her brother so that her and her boyfriend could have my single room.

Ummm, nope!

I told her that I was sure the resort could accommodate her brother having his own room and that I think it would be nice if we could all have our own space, instead of having to share rooms.

She acted upset that I wouldn’t switch rooms, as if I was being selfish.

I (16M) bought a small box of chocolates this morning with my own money.

To clarify, there are 6 chocolates in the box, and the box cost 15 euros.

I was and still am intending to eat them all.

Because I paid for them with my own money.

This teenager’s mother demanded that he share the entire box with everyone.

However, my mother specifically is trying to force me to share them with the rest of my family.

She says that me eating them by myself is selfish.

But knowing my family, I might only get to eat one or two out of the 6 chocolates.

I tried to explain that I bought them with my own money.

And I wanted to try all the flavours that I chose.

Anyways, we got into a fight, and I decided to hide my chocolates for now out of fear of my family eating them.

Sharing is a kind gesture when it is voluntary.

I’m trying to transfer my interest into another person’s name, but my roomate is making it difficult.

I need to get off the lease as my job role was made redundant weeks ago, and I cannot afford to pay rent anymore.

I made my roomate aware of this weeks ago.

I understand it is my responsibility to find a suitable new tenant to replace my part of the lease.

And I’ve had a lot of interest from good potential roommates.

I’ve messaged her friend to ask if she can move in 2 weeks. She lives with her parents. I have not yet received a response from her nor my roomate on a date.

She thinks her roommate is being difficult and doesn’t know what to do anymore.

I understand that it is my responsibility to hold up my part of the lease that I signed, but I feel that my roomate is being unreasonable.

She refused to meet with a potential roomate after asking me to change the inspection time so she could meet her.

She kind of did a 180 on me as, at first, her friend wasn’t even an option.

Is there anything I can do? I just can’t afford any more rent. I’m in QLD.

It sounds like a tough spot to be in. In my opinion, both roommates have valid concerns, but compromise has to work both ways. It’s understandable that OP’s roommate wants someone she already knows. But expecting OP to keep paying indefinitely while waiting for that person doesn’t seem like a practical solution.

Nutty Neighbor seems weirdly obsessed

We have a neighbor who has acted like this since we first moved into our new-build home in 2003.

She’s never been in my home, and I’ve never really had a conversation with her except “hi, bye” and whenever she’s taken it upon herself to stomp over to complain about something that had upset her daughter.

And I have never been in her home, but know the layout, as we lived in the same floor plan in our last neighborhood and have friends say, “It’s just like your old house.” Weird.

Lawyers got involved.

She continually turns us into the HOA for false violations, and at one point got on the board with my husband and kept pressing a non-rule (I had been on the board when that was repealed by a vote of the committee).

We laughed, she wouldn’t stop. It ended in a lawsuit.

We sued the HOA president and her, yes, the HOA had insurance to cover board members, but the lawyers, insurance, and management company all agreed they were breaking the bylaws and state law with selective enforcement.

We won.

But it didn’t feel that rewarding since things got so weird.

We did not ask for money, we asked for lawyers’ fees, and those two board members were removed by a judge and not allowed to ever be on a committee or board again.

And yes, they had to pay with their own funds because they were told they were not doing this in good faith and this was not their fiduciary duty.

So insurance for board members did not have to pay.

After that, she was a curly, short-haired blonde. I have long auburn hair, fairly straight with some waves.

Identity theft is not a joke…

I also have a lot of pink clothes that I work in the yard in. I also have an incurable physical disability.

And I drive a white Subaru SUV.

This matters because she has grown her hair out, dyed it dark, dark, and straightens it. Also, she now only wears pink clothes and bought a newer car the same as mine.

Now she likes to yell at our house, obscenities, and that I am not really ill (she looks totally nuts when she does this because we are generally not outside when she is around). How would she know?

It’s a crazy situation.

I’ve never talked to her about anything personal. She has contacted Social Security Disability saying I am faking (wish I were).

Her Wi-Fi name is “Disability Fraud Watch.”

She now yells things at my husband, who had a heart attack 2 years ago, about being a loser and that’s why he had an attack. (Again, don’t know how she would know this, we do not speak.)

She’s also threatened to come over and kick his ***. Just nuts!

They’re confused about the whole thing.

So my family and I wonder:

Does she have a thing for my husband and is trying to be like me?

Does her husband have a thing for me, so she resents me?

Both of those things sound uppity and snotty on my part, but we have no idea what the deal with her is, and it seems she just keeps copying me.

It’s very obvious.

Also, had my hair highlighted for a wedding, 2 days later, my husband comes in and says, “Guess who got highlights?”

She does call the police frequently, and even her harassment is considered a neighbor problem and they won’t do anything, but agree there is something wrong with her.

The HOA now ignores her complaints.

We built this house to accommodate my disability, so moving would be awful.

Let me fill you in on how jobs like the one you’re going to read about are supposed to work. Employees work hard, and they take classes and get certifications to advance their careers. Their bosses are impressed, and they get a raise!

That sounds great, doesn’t it? But…it doesn’t always work that way…

This woman knows all about it, and she explained why she’s pretty frustrated about her current position.

And I think that’s what has finally started changing the way I look at work. Employers constantly talk about professional development. Keep learning. Improve your skills. Become more qualified. Take on more responsibility. Show initiative.

But then when you actually do all of that, the financial reward can be almost laughable.

Meanwhile, the expectations definitely increase. Once you’re more experienced and more qualified, you’re trusted with more, expected to handle more, solve more problems, and generally be “better” at your job.

What’s the point…?

So apparently my qualification has significant value when it comes to what I can give my employer, but very little value when it comes to what they should pay me.

I used to think the obvious career path was: work hard → gain experience → get qualified → become more valuable → earn more

AITA for resenting family members who ignored my grandmother while she was sick but want her belongings now?

I’m a girl in my late teens/early 20s and my grandmother passed away five days ago.

For context, my “elder sister” is actually my biological mother.

She left me with my grandmother when I was very young because her husband didn’t want me.

There’s already a lot to unpack here.

I only found out the truth when I was 15.

Even now, her younger children think I’m just their aunt/sister.

For the last 9 months, my Ammi was extremely sick.

That must have brought up so many complicated feelings.

My uncle and I were the ones taking care of her daily.

I did chores, gave medicine, stayed with her during hospital visits, and tried to comfort her while she slowly got weaker.

My biological mother and her family mostly stayed away because they lived in another city and didn’t want inconvenience.

What kind of a reason is that?

At one point before surgery, I begged her oldest daughter (let’s call her Zen) to stay with me for a few days and help because I was overwhelmed.

She refused because she didn’t want to miss the gym.

After surgery, my Ammi started vomiting blood because of liver complications.

Seeing a loved one in that state is wildly tragic.

Even then, my bio mother’s family kept wanting to leave quickly for Eid and kept pressuring us to move to their city instead of helping us where we lived.

Eventually my Ammi got worse.

I was literally wiping blood from her mouth in the hospital while doctors rushed her around.

Thankfully she had someone there to help her in her time of need.

She died the next day.

Now after her death, we were packing things and my bio mother, Zen, and the younger daughter suddenly became very excited over my Ammi’s sarees and jewelry.

Laughing, picking what they wanted, talking about who gets what.

Doesn’t seem like any of them are great at reading the room.

I know they also lost someone important.

But I felt hurt because when Ammi was alive and suffering, they barely wanted to be around her.

Meanwhile my uncle and I spent months emotionally and physically exhausted caring for her.

It’s understandable that they’re grieving the loss in a different way.

I got visibly upset and snatched back one saree I had been wearing from Zen because it was emotionally important to me.

My bio mother got angry and said Ammi was her mother too.

Later I overheard her calling me “small-hearted” in a bitter tone, which is very insulting in my culture.

Those kinds of insults are completely unnecessary here.

Her daughter also complained that I don’t give her nice clothes even though I already had.

Since then nobody is speaking to me and we now have to stay with them for a few days in their city.

I honestly feel emotionally destroyed right now.

Who could blame her?

Between losing my Ammi and the family conflict afterward, there are moments where I feel like I don’t even want to exist anymore.

I’m exhausted and grieving, which is probably affecting my reactions too.

Doesn’t seem like anything productive can happen in this state right now.

I know I was rude and possessive.

But I also feel like I’m drowning in grief and anger.

Sometimes, trying to avoid one awkward situation can create an even bigger one.

In this story, a teacher organized a Christmas gift exchange for her third-grade students. She asked the parents to provide gifts within a small budget, but one parent chose not to have her child participate. The teacher warned her that doing so might make the child feel left out, and she was right.

This actually happened last December, but I’m only now bringing it up.

I’m a teacher for third graders, and last year, we had a Christmas celebration where there’s a gift exchanging event where the kids exchange gifts through games. We told the parents to prepare a gift with a budget under 20 dollars.

One kid’s mom opted for her kid to not participate in this event, i.e. not bringing a gift and not taking one.

We warned her that her kid might feel left out, but she said it’s okay.

This teacher witnessed how the child got upset and cried for not being able to join the gift-exchange.

The celebration came, and I actually prepared one gift for each kid with my own money, including the kid who did not bring a gift.

Then came the gift exchanging event where kids start playing games to decide which gift goes to who.

Without a gift to exchange, that kid obviously can’t join, and stood to the side and felt left out and cried.

I told her she can join with the gift I gave her, but she liked it too much to risk exchanging it for something less desire.

She reminded the mother that this would happen.

The kid’s mom was furious that her kid actually did not get to join.

I reminded her we warned her this would happen.

And she said she didn’t know her kid would care enough to cry. And the teachers should’ve given the kid an extra gift, however cheap, to join in, upon seeing her cry. And just claim the cost of the gift from the mom afterwards. So that the kid can go home with two gift like the others and wouldn’t feel out of place.

The kid’s mom still gives her dirty side-eye at school.

That was last year, and the kid still comes to our school.

But every time her mom picks her up, the mom gives me dirty side eyes.

She also tells other parents about how I deliberately kept her kid from joining in an event for not being able to afford a gift.

OP did warn her. It may have been understandable that the mother felt bad seeing her daughter upset, but what can they do at the moment, right? The teacher tried to pacify the situation, actually. It’s just sad that it could all have been avoided had the mother agreed to buy a gift for the exchange.

Spanish Air Base Tried to Enforce a Ridiculous Rule: The Great Car Registration War

This is a story from my time in the Air Force.

We took part in an international exercise in Spain.

For this, we deployed several aircraft and around 200 personnel to a Spanish air base.

Certainly not your average Reddit story already.

I myself was there ahead of the main contingent with a small advance party of about 15 men to prepare everything for their arrival.

One of our tasks was to register roughly 50 rented vehicles at the base gate and bring them onto the base.

To do this, the Spanish authorities introduced a rule that each of us could only register five vehicles under our name.

That doesn’t sound too efficient for what needs to happen here.

So we drove the vehicles up to the gate and then each of us gradually brought in three to five cars, including registering them in our names, which was noted on the vehicle’s access pass.

At first, this went smoothly and we were able to hand over the vehicle keys to the comrades arriving later.

However, after two or three days, problems started.

Seems inevitable here.

An official notice was issued stating that from now on, each person was only allowed to have one vehicle registered under their name.

So we gathered additional people and drove to the gate to transfer the excess vehicles from one person to another.

The whole process took about two hours, but eventually it was done.

Wrangling rabbits sounds easier.

That arrangement lasted for about a week.

Then suddenly, cars trying to leave the base were being turned back.

The guards would no longer let them leave unless the person under whose name the car was registered was actually sitting in the vehicle.

Maybe they should have thought about this beforehand?

We then sought talks with the local authorities and explained that we assigned vehicles according to current operational needs and that it was impossible to comply with this new rule.

However, we were dismissed rather smugly with the explanation that if it was absolutely necessary, the vehicle could simply be re-registered.

From that point on, it very much felt like deliberate harassment to me.

A line in the sand was certainly drawn.

But we still had good old malicious compliance!

We instructed all soldiers that whenever time allowed, they should drive to the gate in pairs and have vehicles re-registered.

Either from a person who already had a car to someone without one, or, if both already had a registered vehicle, simply swap them around.

That’s one way to teach them a lesson.

Within a very short time, the guard office was completely clogged up, and the official probably had to process around 50 vehicle registration changes a day.

And what can I say, after two days of the guard office being blocked by endless vehicle re-registrations, it suddenly no longer mattered whether the registered person was sitting in the car or not!

Me, 18F, grandmother, 57F. My grandmother just broke her leg and can’t drive for the time being.

This has led to a big time commitment for her.

I have been completely at her disposal since she can’t drive, the only exception is when I’m at work or hanging out with my friends and boyfriend.

This morning I had made plans to hang out with my boyfriend for a majority of the day.

I had taken a shower and was in the bathroom for around 20 minutes.

She thought the day was progressing as normal, but soon her grandmother threw a curveball.

When I had gotten out of the bathroom, I had gone to my room, giving her around 20 minutes to get ready (she was already dressed and her hair was done).

When I had emerged from my room carrying my bag, I started heading to my car, and I had told her that I was going to start my car.

This really upset her grandmother.

It set her off, and she started to throw a fit complaining that she wasn’t ready yet, so I told her that I would wait on the porch, and I waited for about 15 minutes.

When she came out, she told me to leave and go see my boyfriend, that she didn’t want to go anymore.

I told her that I would wait for her. She went back inside and started slamming cabinets and loudly complaining.

I decided to wait another 5 minutes before I got in my car.

Her grandmother continues to make her displeasure quite clear.

5 minutes pass, and as I’m leaving, she comes out, proceeds to throw a basket of laundry on the porch, and starts hanging them on the line.

She knows that slamming stuff really bothers me, yet she continues to do it after telling her in the past that it bothers me.

So, AITA?

It doesn’t sound like these people are on the same page at all.

How should I approach my neighbor about their constantly yelping/barking dog?

Over the past couple of weeks, I have noticed that my neighbor’s dog has been crying.

It has been yelping and barking from around 7:00 a.m. until approximately 5:30 p.m. almost every day. Sometimes, it starts even earlier.

At first, I did not mind because the noise was less frequent.

It has gradually become much more persistent. The dog now yelps for long periods throughout the day. Sometimes, it sounds like it is in serious distress.

This man had tried a lot of ways to drown out the noise, but nothing worked.

I have tried closing my windows, listening to music while studying, and simply adjusting to the noise.

I hoped that it would eventually fade into the background.

Unfortunately, none of that has helped. It has become extremely disruptive.

I am not sure whether the owner knows how distressed the dog sounds while they are gone. I would prefer to speak with them politely before involving the property manager or animal control.

Now, he’s unsure how to approach his neighbor and start the conversation.

Being told you’re valuable and actually being compensated like it are two very different things.

One hardworking landscaper learned that lesson after a foreman quit partway through the year. So when he ended up absorbing most of her responsibilities, he received a heap of extra work, but no pay raise to match. After months of unpaid labor, he finally requested a formal meeting to push for the compensation he felt he’d clearly earned.

But instead of having an honest conversation, his employer just moved the goalpost once more. Clearly, taking advantage of him suited them a lot better.

This is my 4th season working for a landscaping company.

Over the course of the season our foreman quit, and I’ve taken on a lot of her responsibilities.

At first, he thought he was moving up in the profession.

Back in May we were given new uniforms, and I received a “foreman” uniform and told I was becoming a foreman.

But here comes the biggest catch.

There was no meeting prior to the announcement and no change in pay. So basically my responsibilities have increased and I’ve taken on a leadership role with no raise.

His employer seems intent on maintaining the status quo.

I’m just now leaving the meeting I requested to have asking for a raise, and they will not give me one. I was told that I’ve really excelled in my role, and “if I keep it up,” then they will “revisit” the possibility of a raise.

Sounds like a classic move employers love to pull: constantly shifting the goalposts.

If the work is already being done at foreman level, the pay should already reflect that, full stop.

A milestone birthday trip planned specifically around family time sounds pretty straightforward—until someone starts expanding the guest list.

One couple was preparing to travel with extended family to celebrate OP’s sister-in-law’s 60th birthday when their adult daughter invited two longtime friends along. OP didn’t see a major issue: the friends would pay their own way, stay at OP’s separate accommodations, and entertain themselves whenever the family had birthday plans.

But his sister-in-law saw things very differently. She felt a trip she’d specifically planned to celebrate her birthday with family was being changed without her input—and things only got worse when OP encouraged his wife to make it clear they were “informing” her about the extra guests, not asking permission.

AITAH for letting my adult daughter bring two friends on SIL 60th birthday trip?

My wife and I are going on a family trip for my sister-in-law’s milestone birthday. The trip was planned because she wanted to celebrate with family.

My wife’s parents are going too, along with my SIL, her adult son, and his girlfriend.

My wife and I booked our own flights and a separate place to stay. After that my wife’s parents then offered to help pay for our travel and lodging, which we appreciated.

How nice of them.

Our adult daughter is also coming. At some point, she invited two longtime friends. They are staying with us, not with my SIL, and paying their own way. We never expected my SIL to host them, pay for them, include them in every activity, or adjust her lodging.

My SIL’s rental has a strict visitor limit, and she wanted to host a birthday gathering there. She was worried that adding two more people could cause problems with the rental rules.

We were fine with making sure there were no occupancy issues and having our daughter’s friends do their own thing during family events.

Perfect.

Here is where I may have made it worse. Early on, I encouraged my wife to stand up for our daughter and say something like, “I’m not asking your permission for her friends. I’m informing you that they are staying with us.” In hindsight, I can see how that sounded dismissive, especially since my SIL felt the whole point of the trip was her birthday with family.

After that, my SIL said that once our “headcount” grew and our group’s focus changed, her trip goals changed too.

She booked activities based on what she wanted and said she would have to figure out when/if we could spend time together.

Well, this was not the plan.

I later clarified that the birthday/family plans were for me, my wife, and our daughter, and that our daughter’s friends could do their own thing.

My SIL did not take that well. She said the whole trip itself was the her birthday, that her clearly stated wish was to celebrate with family, and that she felt my wife had hijacked the trip and disregarded her wishes.

Things escalated between my wife and her sister. My SIL eventually sent activity details and said all five people in our party were welcome to join activities, except gatherings at her rental because of the visitor limit. By that point those excursions were sold out. But she also said she had lost trust and respect for my wife and would only be genuinely warm to everyone else.

Woof.

From my perspective, our daughter’s friends being in the same destination does not mean my SIL has to include them in anything.

They are staying with us and can do their own thing. We still plan to celebrate my SIL and join family events where possible.

So, AITAH for letting my adult daughter bring two friends on this trip? And did I make it worse by encouraging the “informing you, not asking permission” framing?

Imagine living in a neighborhood where there is just enough street parking for every homeowner to park one car on the street. While street parking is technically public parking and fair game for everyone, would you abide by the unwritten one car per house rule in your neighborhood, or would you park as many cars as you want on the street?

Unfair Road Parking

There is some road parking outside our house.

There are just enough spaces for each of the houses to have one car parked on the road.

Each of the houses also have a driveway. That can fit 2-3 cars. But it’s awkward, and most people like to park one car on the drive and the second on the road.

It’s an unsaid rule, but yeah we have that common understanding – except my neighbours.

How annoying!

They choose to park both of their cars outside on the road, taking up one of my spaces (not my space, anyone can use it, but it’s opposite my house). Leaving their driveway completely empty.

They stand in the window looking, as soon as I move my car from that space, they will move their car into it.

Sometimes they’ll only have one car at home, so they will move the car from their space into mine, other times they double park and block both of the spaces.

Not sure, what would others do in this scenario? Talking to them is not an option – we’ve tried and it didn’t work.

Why don’t they just park one car in the driveway? I don’t understand this thinking!

Now, this would be illegal.

Since it’s street parking, there’s really no way to prevent the neighbor from parking both cars there. The idea to park in someone else’s unofficial spot might work by disrupting the entire balance of the neighborhood parking situation.

I don’t understand why someone would choose to park on the street when they have a perfectly good driveway. Not only is parking in the driveway the considerate thing to do, it’s more convenient for the person driving the car.

Driveways exist for a reason! Use them!
