People who abuse or neglect animals need to be stopped as soon as it is discovered.

What would you do if your coworker was known to neglect her dogs, but when you notified your manager of the issue, they took her side and refused to do anything?

That is what happened to the person in this story, and it is especially bad since they worked at a doggy daycare.

Personally, I think it is good that she stood up to the managers. Unfortunately, there isn’t much she can do beyond what she has already done.

Be careful who you work for

I worked at a doggy daycare for a little over a year and absolutely loved it.

It had its downsides, of course, but I always overlooked the issues because of how much I loved the dogs.

The main problem with it was the management (3 co-managers), who I will refer to as A, B, and C.

Her coworker is not a great pet owner, it seems.

When I first started working there, one of my coworkers, who I’ll call D, already was an issue.

She had worked there pretty much from when the building opened for business, so about 3 years before I joined.

I thought she was nice, but a month after I started working there, she brought her dogs in for boarding. These dogs were so skinny, (both German shepherd mixes), I thought she had just rescued them.

Hopefully the dogs are ok.

I asked one of my other coworkers about this and they said she has had one of them for a few years and adopted the other one the previous year.

Obviously, I was concerned.

I brought up my concerns to the managers and they said they would look into it.

She is not feeding them nearly enough.

While the dogs were there, they would constantly have accidents in their kennels and always had diarrhea. It got to the point where we would be cleaning their kennels every few hours.

I looked at their feeding schedule and it said they would only be fed 1 cup a day, each.

HUGE red flag because they are medium sized dogs.

Is she going to be a neglectful mother too?

The new year comes around marking around 5 months since I started working there and D has her baby, leading to her boarding her two dogs again for over a week.

They show up, still skinnier than they should be, but not any worse. Still the same issues (constant accidents, diarrhea), still being fed 1 cup a day each.

Again, I speak with my managers.

They said they would handle it.

It is scary that ‘D’ works for a doggy daycare.

They ended up switching their feeding schedule to 2 1/2 cups a day each, with pumpkins mixed in. We also started having to limit their water intake because they would gulp down a bucket of water (most likely trying to fill their stomachs).

D actually asked us to do this, claiming they just drink too much water and that she didn’t want to deal with all that.

D picks them up, and they don’t board for another few months.

This just isn’t right.

Next time they come in, they look like they put some weight on but are still have constant accidents.

Ok, at least they aren’t skin and bones anymore I guess.

The final time she brought them in while I worked there, I said enough was enough.

December rolls around marking a year and a few months since I started working there. D bring her dogs in for boarding. They are INCREDIBLY emaciated. Like the type you see that were just rescued from a bad home.

It is good that she is not letting this go.

So, I start talking with my coworkers and ask them what the heck could possibly be going on.

We all have the same worry: that she is clearly neglecting (literally starving) these dogs.

A few of them ended up defending her, which is crazy to me, and scoffed/laughed at me for saying I would quit.

The first night they started their boarding, I texted my most trusted manager and say something along the lines of “C, have you seen D’s dogs? This is terrible.”

Nothing is changing.

C responds “I know, I cried when I saw them this morning. We are going to have a talk with D.”

In my mind I’m like “This is like the 3rd or 4th time you’ve said this and clearly nothing has been done.” But I keep my mouth shut because they would have to be stupid to NOT do something about this, it’s a doggy daycare for God’s sake.

I talk with two of my most trusted coworkers, E and F about this, who have worked there longer than me. They say there is no way that the managers are actually going to do something about it.

This is when E tells me that he has had similar issues with D before I started working there.

Finally, someone is going to stand up for these poor dogs.

A few notable ones include: D leaving one of the dogs in their own diarrhea and leaving for the night because she didn’t want to clean it (one of our other coworkers ended up staying late to clean it because who does that to a dog), manager A having to deworm D’s dogs (or was it just one of them?), and all three managers being upset with E because they claimed he was badmouthing and lying about D being a bad pet owner and dog handler.

So, now I finally realize that these three have zero right to run a doggy daycare if they allow this to happen to one of their employees dogs.

The three of us write a letter to the managers that basically says “Fire D or the three of us quit”.

Now they are just making excuses for her.

This was intended to be an empty threat to get them to ACTUALLY do something because I really did care for all the dogs there and really didn’t want to leave.

I get a message from manager C saying “I set a time for noon on Monday to discuss all of your concerns”.

Yay, okay.

The meeting comes along and it definitely did not go the way I expected.

They defended D, saying she has mental health problems (I am clinically diagnosed with depression and high anxiety myself) and that she has no support system to help her.

And these people get paid to care for animals.

I was told I had no empathy because I was badmouthing D and that I need to be more empathetic to people with mental health issues.

So, the entire meeting they just defended her neglecting her dogs.

Needless to say, I quit on the spot and two others followed soon after me.

I ended up contacting the local police and animal shelter about D and showed proof of her dog’s health, but I was told “there really isn’t much we can do”.

At least she doesn’t work there.

Now here is where it gets really good.

I quit in January this year and just two days ago I received a message from my old coworker that still works there saying that D was forced to quit for yelling at people and abusing dogs.

Unfortunately, I am even more worried for her dogs because now she doesn’t have a job.

I am also worried for her child because animal neglect and abuse could lead into child neglect and abuse.

She has every reason to be very concerned about the situation. It might not be a bad idea to contact child protective services to at least get them to look into the situation.

Mental health issues can be hard, but they are never an excuse for neglecting a pet.

The truth is, I just really love seeing her in bright colors and wanted to find her a nice bikini, since she doesn’t have any.

Without thinking, I just grabbed the link to the cheaper one, sent her the ad, and asked if she’d wear it.

This is about to get ugly…

Now she thinks I’m making a dig at her weight.

She hasn’t answered me yet, and now I’m stuck waiting. I honestly can’t tell if she was just teasing me or if she is genuinely upset.

It’s funny how people you’ve seen in your neighborhood every day for a long time can suddenly just disappear one day.

For example, there’s a guy who I’ve seen walking up and down my street for years…and about a month ago, I noticed I haven’t seen him in a few weeks.

And he hasn’t reappeared since!

It’s wild!

He’s been a neighborhood fixture for years and now, no one has any clue what happened to him.

The woman who wrote today’s story talked about why she has a lot of questions because she hasn’t seen her neighbors, who she’s no fan of, for a couple of weeks.

Neighbor From Hell mysteriously absent for 2 weeks.

“My neighbor across the hall lives with her adult son.

We used to be friends but about 5 years ago she abruptly stopped talking to me and started accusing me of smoking in my apartment and training my cat to spy on her.

She sounds. a bit paranoid, don’t you think…?

About a year ago, she put up cameras, one outside her door facing mine, one outside her window facing the front door to the building.

After my car was hit on the street, I got a permit to start parking in the lot behind the building. Within 2 or 3 days of me parking in the back, she put up another camera facing the back parking lot.

A few months ago, the neighbors downstairs who WERE smoking and filling the hallways with smoke got evicted, and I thought that maybe she’d realize that it wasn’t me the whole time and calm down, but she and her son remained hostile and weird.

Told ya so!

I dunno, maybe it was embarrassing to realize they’ve been wrong for 5 years.

Her and her adult son have lived there for almost 10 years. He was 15 when they moved in, and for most of that time he wasn’t allowed to have keys to the apartment. They have a dog, and they only ever left the apartment together. It was VERY rare to see the son outside without her.

Almost a year ago, the son got a job at the supermarket near our apartment and actually flipped off my partner when they were shopping once.

We started seeing the son come home in the mornings. I saw him every morning, waiting to be let inside or walking home from the supermarket.

She’s probably not wrong about this…

For years, partner and I would kinda joke (out of worry) that he was gonna go all Norman Bates and snap one day, because obviously it’s not a healthy relationship and we would hear them fight sometimes.

Their dog, Buster was old, unhealthy and very overweight. She has ability issues and we live on the 2nd floor (no elevator) so I imagine it was difficult at times to get him up and down the stairs.

They used to go outside and just sit in the lawn across the street for a few hours every day. (Which is funny, considering that she yelled at me for “trespassing” for letting my cat in the grass under her window in the lawn in front of our apartments.)

About a week ago, my partner asked me if I’d seen Buster lately, and wondered if he’d passed away. I realized that I hadn’t seen either of them in a long while. We also realized that we haven’t seen the son coming home from work in the morning, or at the supermarket.

This is weird…

Well, it’s now been almost 2 weeks. Haven’t seen them walking the dog, haven’t seen them at all. They were always VERY loud about coming up the stairs and would slam the door aggressively. 4 or 5 days ago I heard music and singing from the apartment, but that’s it.

They have no car, and son can’t drive.

The other weird thing- she would have to take the cameras in from time to time to charge them, and so they’d move around slightly. For a while she had 2 cameras in front and 1 in the back.

Now there’s only one camera in front. And the one in the hallway facing our door had a little motion-sensor light that would come on when we came and went. The camera appears to be off now.

If Buster passed away, I have no idea how they’d take care of the body. Obviously, they could have taken care of it when we weren’t home, maybe they called Animal Services or something.

She’s legit worried about this.

But not seeing either of them for weeks now is troubling.

Yes, they’ve made my living situation miserable, but they’re still humans, my neighbors, and obviously dealing with some major stuff that has nothing to do with me.

I guess I’m just wondering if I should wait til I smell something to do a welfare check? It’s just all very odd.”

I had a male friend who was going to get married years ago and take his girlfriend’s last name and, I’m gonna be honest, some folks thought it was strange.

I think it’s much more common now than it was back then but, judging by this story, some people still aren’t cool with the idea of a man taking his wife’s last name.

“Me (28M) and my fiancé K (28F) are getting married soon.

We’ve decided quite a while ago that I will take up her last name.

My last name is long, cumbersome, and clearly Ashkenazi Jew, which (while true) comes with a host of stereotypes that mostly don’t fit me well.

K’s last name is short and international.

Sounds like a deal!

I’ve always disliked my last name, and K always liked hers; it has a nice ring, as does mine with her last name (both start with the same letter). I brought the idea up and K liked it.

We’ve both mentioned it publicly for months whenever it came up, but only now, with our wedding approaching, have our families realized we’re serious.

I’m suddenly facing strong resistance from my family, pleading I reconsider to “preserve the name”.

He’s not holding back!

I argue that:

The expectation of K automatically taking my last name with no consideration is inappropriate; what about her last name? Does she not have a say?

Instead of defaulting to a practice, we decided to evaluate which option (my name, hers, hyphenated) suits us best, and reached a conclusion.

The arguments of “preserving the name” and “keeping the family honor” are flawed; I have a younger brother who can keep the family name (granted, K does too); my sister isn’t keeping her name and was never asked to (why not, if it’s family honor?); and what do I have with family honor anyway? It’s not a value I hold at all.

People are pretty upset about this.

I hold to these, but they affect a lot of people:

– My family is obviously offended

– Both families feel this is me succumbing to K – as we also decided to marry quite quickly (proposed at month 9, will marry just before 2nd anniversary), and I am moving to her hometown.

In practice, it’s the exact opposite; I always disliked my last name, always disliked my home town, and always sought a clear understanding of my relationships. K likes these choices, but they were all my initiatives, my choices, to fix my own misgivings.

He’s worried and not sure what to do.

– I worry that will cast K in a bad light. She’s aware and says she’s willing to take it, but it’s essentially me putting her in this uncomfortable situation.

I am personally upset that everyone feels they have a say in what’s essentially my business. Then again, I do have a rebellious streak and there are non argumentative solutions: we can just both keep our names, we can hyphenate, even flat out not discuss it.

Given it is just a name, this might be just me being stubborn, even though I feel strongly about it.

Given all that – WIBTAH if I take up my fiancé’s last name when we marry?”

Companies have rules against drinking on the job for a reason.

What would you do if you were performing an IT system install on a large cargo vessel when the captain of the ship invited you to have lunch with him, but the lunch included plenty of drinking?

That is what happened to the IT guy in this story, and he made the mistake of drinking along with the captain. While he was able to successfully complete the install, he did end up feeling the consequences of his actions.

Another Ship, Another Server, Another CHENG With a Fire Sword

There was a cargo ship, the Iron Chieftain. She was a bulk ore carrier running the Newcastle, Sydney, Wollongong and Whyalla route, and by this stage I had become something of an unwilling specialist in installing IT infrastructure on large lumps of steel that stubbornly refused to remain in one place.

The first ship install had involved frantic planning, missing equipment, improvised engineering, international waters, customs officials and the threat of an unscheduled voyage to Venezuela.

By the time I got to the Iron Chieftain, though, I had the process down to a fine art.

Everything seems to be working as expected.

Server. Check.

UPS. Check.

Switch. Check.

Communications gear. Check.

Workstations. Check.

He has this down to a science.

Test.

Synchronise.

Sign-off.

Get off the ship.

Four hours, maybe five if something went wrong.

He is ready for anything.

I had spare cables. I had spare powerboards. I had spare adapters. I had tools. I had documentation. I had learned and remembered the most important lesson from the earlier deployments:

Assume everything you have been told about the ship is wrong until you physically see it yourself.

But…there was one thing I still hadn’t learned.

What is wrong with this guy?

Never underestimate a Ukrainian captain at lunchtime.

The Iron Chieftain’s senior crew were Ukrainian, including the Captain and CHENG, and the CHENG immediately demonstrated that he belonged to the same school of maritime engineering as the Chief Engineer from my previous adventure.

For those unfamiliar with the term, CHENG means Chief Engineer.

They work in a difficult environment, that’s for sure.

In my experience, the Chief Engineer aboard a ship is the person responsible for keeping several thousand tonnes of complicated machinery alive while surrounded by salt water, vibration and people asking why things aren’t working.

They are, therefore, remarkably practical individuals. Sometimes aggressively practical.

Need power somewhere? Run cable. Something in the way? Move it. Can’t move it? Cut it.

Need a hole through a steel bulkhead? There are probably many formally approved maritime engineering methods for creating one.

That’s one way of doing it.

This CHENG had a preferred method and it was also the fire sword, or, as other people insist on calling it, an oxy-acetylene cutting torch.

I would point at the place where I needed to route a cable.

He would look at the wall. Then at me. Then back at the wall.

There would be a brief pause while some internal engineering calculation occurred. Then: FWOOM.

Problem solved.

Hole.

He has learned to trust the guy.

I had reached the point where this barely concerned me anymore.

My original reaction to seeing someone attack part of a ship with an oxy torch had been something along the lines of: “Should you be doing that?”

By the Iron Chieftain installation, my response had evolved into: “Can you make it about five centimetres further to the left?”

When things are running smoothly, watch out for trouble.

Experience changes a man.

The install itself was almost disappointingly uneventful.

Everything arrived on schedule. The server powered up. The network behaved. The workstations connected. The communications link worked. No computers required emergency resurrection. Nobody had forgotten to mention that a critical workstation had been broken for six months. There were no nearby engine-room fires and, most importantly, nobody threatened to take me to South America.

Lunch with the captain sounds nice.

For once, I was actually ahead of schedule…….and this should have concerned me.

Around lunchtime, the Captain appeared and invited me to eat with him and the senior crew.

Now, there are certain invitations in life that are technically optional but, in reality, are not optional at all.

What a great opportunity.

When the Ukrainian captain of a bulk carrier invites the visiting IT engineer to lunch aboard his ship, you do not say: “No thanks, I brought a sandwich.”

You go to lunch.

So I went to lunch. And lunch was excellent.

Proper cooked food, generous portions and the sort of hospitality you tend to remember years later.

Do not drink on the job.

Then THE bottle appeared. Vodka…..proper Ukrainian Vodka. The kind with a capital “V”.

I was offered a glass.

This presented a minor professional dilemma.

On one hand, I was technically still working. On the other hand, I was sitting at the Captain’s table, surrounded by Ukrainian officers, and the Captain was holding a bottle of vodka.

He will regret this.

I considered the options.

There was really only one. I accepted the vodka.

One glass. Perfectly reasonable. A toast was made. We drank. Then another toast was made.

Apparently, Ukrainian maritime tradition contains significantly more things worth toasting than I had previously realised.

It’s all downhill from here.

Second vodka. Still fine. Lunch continued. Conversation continued.

Third vodka. At some point, I became aware that the bottle was spending an unreasonable amount of time near my glass.

Fourth vodka….or was that the fifth?

At this point, it seems that the captain wants him drunk.

Now, I should clarify something. These were not what an Australian publican would politely call a “standard drink”. There was no carefully measured 30 ml nip being poured from a bottle fitted with one of those little plastic spouts.

The Captain’s approach to alcohol measurement appeared to be based primarily on direct eye contact and optimism.

Eventually, lunch finished and I politely thanked the Captain and officers, returned to the equipment and completed my last checks.

Let’s see if everything is still working.

The server was operational. Communications were working. Data synchronisation was successful. Documentation was signed. Job done.

Four hours, exactly as planned. I packed my equipment and headed towards the gangway.

When I had arrived, the Iron Chieftain was tied securely to the wharf in Sydney Harbour. Sydney Harbour was calm. The weather was fine.

Wait. What is happening?

There was absolutely no meteorological reason whatsoever for what happened next because somewhere between the Captain’s dining room and the gangway, the sea state had apparently deteriorated dramatically.

The deck seemed to be moving. Not a lot, mind you. Just enough.

I adjusted. The deck adjusted back. Interesting. I reached the gangway.

My legs, which had performed adequately when I boarded several hours earlier, had apparently suffered some kind of simultaneous mechanical failure.

He had a bit too much vodka.

Left leg requested movement. Request timed out. Right leg attempted to compensate. Unexpected response from device. Retry?

I grabbed the railing. Clearly the ship was moving. That had to be it. It was a large bulk carrier. Ships move. This is basic physics.

Admittedly, it was tied to Sydney but perhaps Sydney was moving.

I began descending the gangway with enormous concentration. One foot. Step. Other foot. Step. Hold railing. Do not look like you have forgotten how legs work.

I would like to believe I maintained a dignified and professional appearance during this process. I have absolutely no evidence supporting that belief.

Now I see what is happening.

Eventually, I reached the wharf. Solid ground. Wonderful, dependable, non-moving ground.

Except it was also moving.

This was becoming concerning. Obviously there must have been unusually heavy seas affecting the Port of Sydney that afternoon. Extremely localised heavy seas. Possibly restricted entirely to a radius of approximately one metre around me.

I made my way slowly towards the exit carrying my backpack and tools while concentrating very carefully on walking in what I believed was a straight line.

Behind me, several members of the crew seemed extremely amused and entertained by something but I never discovered what.

At least everyone seems to have had a good time.

The server installation was a complete success and the ship returned to its normal Newcastle, Sydney, Wollongong and Whyalla run. The CHENG got another opportunity to use his beloved fire sword. The Captain provided excellent hospitality. And I learned another important lesson to add to my growing list of rules for maritime IT work:

If the Chief Engineer says he can make you a hole, stand back. If the Captain invites you to lunch, accept. If the Captain offers you vodka, also accept.

But when the Captain offers you the fourth vodka or maybe a fifth?…remember that Sydney Harbour is apparently prone to sudden and extremely localised heavy seas.

Especially around the gangway.

This story shows perfectly what almost every company has rules against drinking while on the clock. He is lucky that he didn’t get hurt.

There are some people you’ll encounter in life who really don’t know how to mind their own business.

Sure, it can be kind of funny if you’re looking in from the outside, but once that focus in shined on you, it can make your life a living hell.

In today’s story, a man talked about why his family’s experience renting a house has turned into a total nightmare.

House owner is playing mind games with us. Suggestions, please.

“Me, my spouse and my kid plus 2 Rottweilers are living in a rental property.

We had a word of mouth agreement stating that we will be staying a minimum of 5 years in this house and the house owner confirmed that there will be no problems or concerns from the neighboring people and they informed the neighboring people that we are bringing large dogs too.

Hmmm…

Things were going fine and we were in good terms with the neighbors, however the kids who started playing cricket on the roads started damaging our plants and decorative items in our entrance and slowly this started as a problem.

On Diwali 2024, the person living opposite to our premises, accidentally burned one of the tarpaulin sheets which we used for shade and to which he stated that in a sarcastic way that even police would have asked you to remove them.

We took this problem to the owner stating that, it would have burned his house down and we requested him to intervene.

The person who burned the tarpaulin, his dad and the house owner were long-term colleagues as a result of which the owner asked us to rectify this issue with the other house person and this ended up badly as he insulted my wife when she confronted us.

These people are a real handful…

After this the kids sometimes will purposely hit the ball on our stuff, one of the kids destroyed one of our plant which we transported her with lots of efforts.

Right from 2025 till now all these guys (a total of 4 houses) are teaming up with each other and calling the owner continuously pressuring them to vacate us.

The owner even tried to vacate us in the beginning of 2026 stating that a hostel owner wanted this property for rent and we knew that this was a lie plus he never mentioned that there wouldn’t be a hike in the rent but he increased the rent from 18k to 22k informally and I informed him on January that in 2 years or so we will surely vacate as we were to put our son in a nearby school.

This sounds like a serious pressure campaign…

Last week these boys started to hit the bowls which we used to keep water for the dogs and when my wife shouted at them they did a lewd dance in front of her.

My wife took their stumps to speak to their parents but none came however they sneakily called the owner and informed that we are not allowing their kids and stole their property.

The owner also said that one of the neighbours were continually calling them till midnight and were hell bent on vacating us.

Today morning to we received a call from the owner that “what’s the status of the house seeking process”?

They don’t want to move.

My question is that what mistake did we commit here to vacate and the house owner knew that we don’t have family support (as we are from different communities) and he is using that to his advantage.

Can anyone here help us to get out this issue as we just now put our son in a school nearby taking his word into account plus my wife is traumatized by seeing his name in the phone that he will call again to threaten to vacate.

Any help In this regard will be much appreciated, thank you.”

I’m the type of guy who has typically gotten along with my buddy’s girlfriends and wives.

But even I can admit that sometimes, a friend was involved with someone who was totally overbearing, ALWAYS around, and, to be honest, was a pain in the neck.

And if there’s no escape from that person, chances are some people are gonna be turned off by the situation.

In this story, a man opens up about why he had to be honest with his best friend and tell him that he doesn’t want to hang out with him if his girlfriend is always gonna be in the picture.

“We are all 22 years old.

I’ve known him since we were in 5th Grade and he started dating this girl junior year of high school.

At first it was alright, but I noticed she didn’t really like being left out of anything. Even if it was me trying to have a deep conversation with him about personal matters I didn’t really want her to be around for at the time.

Hmmm…

Since they started dating, we haven’t really had a one on one hang out session or even gaming session online without her barging in and making herself comfortable.

And to be honest, it’s getting really frustrating.

A couple months ago my grandpa passed away and at the time I was also struggling with my dog getting old as well as another person really close struggling with cancer.

I called him because I was stressed out and needed someone to talk to and as I was talking she interrupted the conversation asking if I could start from the beginning because she wanted to hear everything that’s been going on with me.

She sounds pretty immature.

When I told her I was dealing with a death in the family and a lot of other stuff and just wanted to talk to my friend personally about it, she said “oh okay I guess I don’t matter anymore” and stormed out of their apartment.

He told me he had to go and hung up.

And at that point I can’t really describe how upset I was.

And usually I’m not really the type to care about stuff like that, but after so long of her doing this stuff and on top of that saying “I guess I don’t matter anymore” after I told her I was dealing with a death and other stuff kinda pushed me over the edge.

He laid it all out there…

So the other day I sent him a message telling him how I felt about the situation and told him as long as she keeps interrupting and being a piece of garbage, I don’t feel like hanging out or playing anything online until she stops barging herself into all of our conversations and one on one time.

Ever since they’ve started dating we haven’t been able to play the games we want because she wants us to play what she wants every time, and we can’t talk about things we usually enjoy talking about (like our past and things we did as kids) because she wasn’t involved and apparently she thinks I’m trying to “steal him.”

When in reality I just want to be able to hang out with him without her always being involved.

Here’s another example of how she interrupted when he tried to hang out with his friend.

Another scenario we had recently was one where she was out of town for a couple days and me and my friend decided to try and rank up on Rivals.

But she gets notifications when he gets on his Xbox because she favorited him and as soon as he got on she called asking what he was doing and why he didn’t call her earlier.

Basically, what I’m asking is, AITA for telling him I don’t want to hang out or do things until she calms down and stops trying to be a part of every little thing me and him try to do?”

Have you ever gone above and beyond to help someone with their job search…but they’re either unappreciative or unrealistic?

Or maybe both?

It’s pretty obnoxious when that happens!

And it kind of makes you not want to be associated with that person anymore.

That’s what the guy in this story is dealing with, and he sounded off about a guy he’s helped out who sounds like he’s a bit of a moron.

“I (30M) got a message from a guy (23M) on LinkedIn asking about an opening at my company.

I checked and found out the role was already pre-identified, so I told him not to waste his time applying.

He thanked me for being direct.

A few weeks later he reached out again asking if I could guide him with his job search.

This was very nice of him!

I had some free time, he seemed genuine, so I gave him my number. He’s a fresh graduate looking for his first job.

Over the next couple months I tried to help where I could. I reached out to people in my network, gave him interview tips, and generally tried to point him in the right direction.

One of my friends referred him to his company. I helped him prep, but he didn’t clear the interview. Fair enough, that happens.

Then another company interviewed him. Again, I gave him pointers. He made it all the way to the final round, but made it very clear he expected a higher salary then they were offering, and they rejected him.

This wasn’t going well…

Later, an entry-level role opened up at my own company. I referred him, he got shortlisted, interviewed well, and got an offer.

Once again, he pushed for more money. They wouldn’t budge, so he rejected the offer.

Honestly, I was frustrated, but I didn’t say anything because it’s his career and his decision.

The market is rough right now, especially for freshers, and the offer was by no means bad.

The guy could tell something was different.

I just became a bit distant.

A few days later he called me asking if I was angry because he didn’t take my company’s offer.

I told him no, I was just busy.

He kept pushing, saying I seemed different and wanted me to be honest.

So I was.

If you really want to know…

I told him I thought he was being unrealistic and, if I’m being honest, a bit ungrateful considering how many people had tried to help him.

I said fresh grads usually don’t have much leverage and no one is paying huge salaries for entry-level roles in the current market.

He replied that he wasn’t going to let himself be manipulated at the beginning of his career into accepting less then he deserved.

I just said, “Best of luck with that attitude,” and ended the call.

Sorry, just being honest!

Later he texted me saying I had really hurt him because I was the only mentor he had and he expected more understanding from me.

I told a friend what happened, and she thinks I was too harsh. She says he’s young and naive and I should’ve either kept guiding him or quietly stepped away instead of telling him what I really thought.

My view is he’s 23, not 13. He asked me if I was upset, I tried to avoid it, and only answered honestly after he kept pressing.

Kids will be kids, right?

BUT, it’s okay to admit that some parents don’t know how to control their children…or maybe they just don’t care.

And that can lead to complications…especially with neighbors!

In the alley adjacent to our home, there are two brothers that operate a tow truck business/car repair shop out of a garage at the end of that alley.

Whether it’s legal or not is questionable, but not the focus of this discussion.

Those darn kids…

They don’t seem like horrible people, but the children of the brothers/workers are constantly running up and down the alley and out in the street until midnight almost every night of the summer. The mothers sit around and don’t scold them.

The children knock on the door so that they can make my dogs bark because they think it’s a joke, we caught them running back down the alley and down our street or hiding behind the neighbors’ to our right, plants in front of their home.

They will knock on our large bay window on the side and throw uneaten food there on occasion, so I have to go out and wipe that down.

I live with my parents because I’m my mom’s caregiver, also an issue with the children being noisy because she is on disability and needs rest, so my dad will go outside and tell them to get away from our property or to maybe play towards the garage and not so close to our house.

This sounds incredibly frustrating…

They have a basketball hoop in a parking lot next to the alley of a business not in use anymore, and they constantly ride 4 wheelers/electric bikes/snowmobiles in the winter, up and down the street.

My dad has called the cops but our police in this town are useless.

The noise ordinance is 10 o’clock. I’m at a loss of what to do.

My dad is trying to move us out, but we’re on a VA loan and I’m not sure what the VA can do for my dad in terms of helping approve a second mortgage or using the house as collateral for a second house.

She feels stuck here…

I work 3 jobs and I still can’t make enough to buy a house since I’m single and have 3 dogs given to me by my ex who doesn’t help with any bills or food for them.

I’m trying to be respectful. I’m a musician and I sometimes will play my clarinet/flute/sax/sing outside to practice for gigs on nice sunny days.

I’ve never received a complaint. And I always stop playing around 9, at the latest. These kids come up to my yard and ask me why I’m playing them. I just don’t understand the ignorance. I really just want to have some peace after working and playing gigs.

But I’m always up until midnight and wake up sleep deprived. My poor dogs have to suffer. This just stinks.”

It’s hard to keep giving the same advice when someone keeps going back to the situation that’s hurting them.

For one woman, that frustration has been building for years as she watches her friend leave an abusive husband and then return to him again.

Each time, her friend talks about divorce only to move back in after he apologizes.

Meanwhile, the stress has gotten so bad that she says she can’t sleep and her hair is falling out.

Finally, the woman told her she loves her, but she doesn’t want to hear about the husband again until the divorce is actually happening.

This is the millionth time she has moved back in with her abusive, toxic husband, who screams at her and cheats on her constantly.

He basically completely ruined her mental health. She’s a shell of herself. Her hair is falling out. She said she can’t sleep.

One month she’s saying she is going to divorce him, then the next month she’s telling me he apologized and she’s moving back in. Rinse and repeat.

She said it’s hard to be alone at her age, being in her late 40s.

She tried to reason with her, but it didn’t work.

I told her, “I love you, but you have to stand up and stop being a pushover to this man. Life is hard. Choose your hard. Being alone is hard, but being stressed out by an abusive man is harder. People get divorced all the time. Nobody has ever died from being alone, but people have died from being in an abusive relationship.”

Leaving a relationship where you love someone is hard, and there will be a grieving process, but she has to stop going back.

I can’t take the nonstop complaining. I need to see results. I told her I will not discuss this man with her anymore until I see divorce papers in her hand. It hurts me to see her hurt.

She’s been complaining about him for years, and I honestly don’t think she’s ever gonna leave him because her self-esteem is so low that she thinks this is love. Is showing her tough love the right way to go? I don’t know what else to do.

Frustrated, she said it in the simplest way possible.

I told her he will never grow because she enables all of his toxic behavior.

She said, “Humans weren’t meant to be alone forever.”

I was like, “Nobody said you were gonna be alone forever, but at least give yourself a chance to meet someone who will love and cherish you. You might not meet him right away, though.”

I laughed and told him he seriously didn’t need to drive back for that.

But he said he noticed it when he got home and it would bother him all day if he kept it. Then he just left.

I stood there looking at the two dimes like an idiot for a second. I’ve had people scream at me over coupons worth less than that. This guy spent gas money to return 20 cents that nobody even knew was missing.

“Sitting here in my pick up truck in a big box blue grocery store parking lot. The one with a spark next to their logo.

Just here for a quick run to grab a few cleaning supplies as I work in construction and I’m finishing up a project.

Okay…

As I’m beginning to reverse to leave, your average stereotypical short haircut, soccer mom and her luxury Audi SUV comes roaring in behind me and stops flashing her lights with a turn signal on 5 feet from my rear bumper so I can’t even back out my pick up truck.

I sit there for a minute with my reverse lights on staring at her through my back window and she starts honking at me. So I decided to just pull back for the 6 inches I’ve already backed up put my truck in park and just sit there staring at her.

Come on!

This goes on for literally a minute and a half while she is blocking a couple other vehicles who are trying to pull into that row of parking spaces.

She gets mad blasting her horn at me again and then pulls over a few spots down from me.

As I opened the Reddit app to make a quick post here, she’s walking past glaring at me while I’m just laughing in my truck because she had a extra three or four minutes to sit and try and bully/intimidate me into giving her a parking spot that is 20 feet closer to the entrance instead of just pulling forward.

Yes, it may have wasted my time as well but I am never in a hurry these days. I take my time on everything and for me it was just cathartic and comedic to spend a little bit of time to get some petty revenge on your average luxury SUV driving soccer mom.”
