    <title>FILIPIÑANA Review: Rafael Manuel&apos;s Feature Redefines Must-See Filmmaking</title>

There&rsquo;s a moment in writer-director Rafael Manuel&rsquo;s often brilliant, always enthralling feature debut, Filipi&ntilde;ana, an expansion of his award-winning 2021 short, where Clara (Carmen Castellanos), the American-born-and-raised niece of a wealthy Filipino businessman, Renato (Carlitos Siguion-Reyna), refuses to bend &mdash; or rather, break &mdash; the rules and accept a penalty in an otherwise meaningless game of golf. &nbsp; Her personal, pink-clad caddie, Ina (Isabel Sicat), chides Clara for the latter&#39;s intransigence. Ina reminds Clara that her uncle regularly &ldquo;bends&rdquo; the rules (cheats), as do the other elites at the golf resort where the game unfolds.&nbsp; &nbsp; For Clara, it&rsquo;s a momentary, perhaps all-too-brief, moment of moral and ethical clarity: She recognizes the social, political, and cultural stratification of the golf club and resort as a...

Lulled into a necessary sense of comfort during a long home birth process, expecting parents and their midwife begin to realize something may be horribly wrong. A blizzard rages outside, trapping the family in their home as increasingly sinister complications arise. &nbsp; There are definitely some doozies out there when it comes to horror flicks centered around giving birth. Writer and director Raymond Creamer is looking to add their name to that list with their flick, Goody Goody, streaming on Shudder on September 18th.&nbsp; &nbsp; The trailer and key art debuted today. You will find the trailer down below.&nbsp; &nbsp; Goody Goody stars Samantha Robinson, Zoe Renee, Colby Hollman, and Colleen Foy. &nbsp;...

As algorithms go, we do not have much truck for them. The Devil&#39;s software does someone else&#39;s bidding the moment you start browsing and your feed is inundated with demands for your money and time. Mostly your money.&nbsp; &nbsp; Yet somehow - somehow - some good comes from doom scrolling.&nbsp; &nbsp; Because we wrote about Art Show! With Captain Skinner some time ago the Etch YouTube channel continued to show up long after we wrote about that web series. Thank whatever gods and dieties were responsible or else we may not have already known about the upcoming web series, Cassie Workman is Witchy AF, an eight-part, weekly, adult comedic documentary series that explores the history and philosophy of occultism and magic. &nbsp; Anything that we...

In Mark Heyman&#39;s feature film directorial debut, Pendulum, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Phoebe Dynevor go one a new-age retreat to recover from a traumatic event. The official teaser was released today, and at the very end, when Abigail submerges her head under water in a tub, we hear a baby crying. We&#39;re going to take a stab at it and say the trauma is the loss of a child.&nbsp; &nbsp; Married couple Patrick and Abigail journey to a new-age retreat in New Mexico, drawn by the possibility of healing after a traumatic event. Patrick is willing to do anything to help his wife, but becomes distrustful of the retreat&rsquo;s enigmatic leader even as Abigail falls under her spell. As paranoia builds, the couple must determine if...

The opening film at this year&rsquo;s Tubi Frightfest London, Nervous is an ambitious psychological thriller set in the South Korean countryside. Irish actress Sarah Bolger reunites with director Abner Pastoll after the success of 2019&rsquo;s A Good Woman is Hard to Find, which closed the same festival that year, to spin the unnerving tale of a woman who accompanies her Korean husband back to his homeland, in a desperate effort to save their failing marriage, only to lose the ability to hear men. &nbsp; Moving into an empty and isolated house in the countryside, far from the urban sprawl of Seoul, Sarah (Bolger) and Sungsoo (Sungsoo Yune, Smugglers) experience a series of strange and unsettling events. First their furniture has not been delivered, then they...

<title>NY&apos;s MUSCLEFEST: Part Film Festival, Part Celebration of Underground Trans and Queer Cinema</title>

Running September 3-6, Muscle Distribution and the Roxy Cinema present MuscleFest, a four-night mini-festival celebrating the distributor's deep-cut restorations, alongside a fearless slate of underground trans and queer cinema. I discovered Muscle Distribution last year at Fantastic Fest with their restoration of Dildo Heaven, the charming "Nudie Cutie" from octogenarian filmmaker and "Queen of Sexploitation" Doris Wishman. Working at a sex shop in Miami in the early '90s, Wishman directed the delightfully shameless, all-top-no-bottoms romp while she was in her late 80s. The completed film premiered at the New York Underground Film Festival just months before her death from lymphoma, before being released posthumously on video in 2002--and, like so many of the films Muscle champions, largely disappearing from the conversation. What really sold me...

In the Netherlands, the film festival season is upon us. Every few weeks there will be another big film festival, and kicking off the pack this coming weekend is Breda's B-Film, Underground and Trash Film Festival, known as BUT for short. Expect classics like Ticks, Slither, Cronenberg's The Fly, Night of the Creeps, Slugs and Bruno Mattei's completely bonkers Rats: Night of Terror. Thursday will be "Toilet Thursday" with...

Alex Ullom&#39;s indie thriller, It Ends, is now playing in theaters in New York and Los Angeles. It will open nation wide this weekend, so a new trailer was released today. Check it out below.&nbsp; &nbsp; Some wrong turns last forever. &nbsp; A group of recent grads head out on a late night drive for grub, hoping to enjoy one final hangout before their paths diverge. Instead, they accidentally turn onto a never-ending, two-lane hellscape surrounded by untold horrors and cosmic forces beyond their understanding. Cramped together inside a Jeep Cherokee and with the miles stretching infinitely ahead, they face a choice: embrace their new existence or fight to escape it. &nbsp; It may also be due for a bit of a reality check, as...

Before we dive into one of Canada's other great film festivals -- yes, Toronto -- which will kick off on September 10, we wanted to look back at the mighty and mammoth Fantasia International Film Festival, held every year in Montreal, Quebec. Kurt Halfyard kicked off our coverage with his curtain-raiser gallery, featuring dozens of films. Our team of reviewers wrote about 18 of the films that had the greatest impact upon them. Their reviews are listed below, in alphabetical order. Please read, share, and bookmark. Some of the films are already out in theaters, while others are on their way, and still others are seeking distribution. <title>ERASER 4K UHD Review: High-Octane Action Has More Depth with Details in Special Features</title>

Director Chuck Russell directed thrillers and enjoyed a steady following. The focus of his directing is often on a strong main character protecting someone or having a sense of humor from transformation. One example of a main character trying to keep someone safe is the setup of The Scorpion King (2002). The credits roll with paperwork linked to crime scenes and issues...

Last month's big-budget blockbusters The Odyssey and Spider-Man: Brand New Day are still playing at multiplexes nationwide, but for those in search of something new and different, we have a few recommendations for you. First is a mind-bender that starts routinely and then steadily becomes extraordinary. You won't want to miss It Ends. I saw the film at SXSW last year and agree completely with our critic J Hurtado, whose review is linked below. I have not yet seen the sci-fi thriller Hot Spot, nor the ghost story Insidious: Out of the Further, nor the Jason Statham action picture Mutiny nor the fevered Kafka bio-pic Franz nor the Anthony Bourdain slice-of-life bio-pic Tony nor the horror pic Blood Shine nor the drama How to Divorce...

<title>INSIDIOUS: OUT OF THE FURTHER Review: Non-Essential Entry Over-Promises and Under-Delivers</title>

After an all-too-brief, barely noticed three-year hiatus, the highly profitable Insidious series returns with its sixth and unfortunately, far-from-final entry, Insidious: Out of the Further. &nbsp; Co-created by James Wan and Leigh Whannell as a counter to the graphic, ultra-violent blood-and-gore Saw series they originated in 2004, Insidious and its follow-ups featured a more traditional, supernatural set-up. Instead of the usual supernatural entry, however, Insidious kept the haunts, but instead of ghosts or demons haunting a specific location (i.e., a house), they haunted the human characters themselves. &nbsp; The premise alone contributed a generally suffocating sense of claustrophobia: Fleeing a haunted house, the standard go-to escape for supernatural stories, didn&rsquo;t matter anymore. The unhappy, restless ghosts and/or the parasitic demons had to be met and...

In the last year, we&rsquo;ve discovered a massive global problem with pedophilia and trafficking of children, particularly of young girls. And I&rsquo;ve just seen the new 4K restoration of this 1982 film in all its full-frontal audacity. There are few actual...
