Late at night on December 3, 2024, President Yoon Suk Yeol of South Korea declared martial law, staging a coup that threatened the country&#39;s government. The only way to reverse the declaration was for politicians to vote against it at the National Assembly. But police and military summoned by Yoon will not let anyone enter the building. That&#39;s all the context you need for The Seoul Guardians, one of the most concise and frightening documentaries of the year. Directed by Jong-Woo Kim, Shin-Wan Kim, and Chul-Young Cho, three broadcast journalists, the film uses a semi-verit&eacute; approach to the incident. An...

The best festivals draw in the the best films and filmmakers. That goes for features, it also goes for short films, and Fantasia&#39;s short film programme is a entire beast of it&#39;s own.&nbsp; &nbsp; The full lineup of over two hundred short films virtually draws films from all four corners of the World, with an animation focus from Japan, regional focuses on China and South Korea, and standards like Born of Women, Small Guage Trauma, Things That go Bump in the East and Are You Afraid of Fantasia? &nbsp; Have a look at all the programmes, below.&nbsp; &nbsp; The Fantasia International Film Festival will celebrate its upcoming 30th edition with a positively mammoth program of screenings, artist talks and special events running from July 16...

The director of films like Tokyo Gore Police, Meatball Machine Kudoku, Mutant Girl Squad, Vampire Girl vs. Frankenstein Girl and Hell Driver was also known as a special effects wizard. Often dubbed the Tom Savini of Japan, a typical Nishimura joint is full of surreal and irreverent body horror, gory action, slapsticky humor, and a lot of objectified women in scantily clad attire. Nishimura made two music videos that divide the elements he is most known for between the two. The 50 Kaitenz's Killer (see below)...

Neat! I have some serious catching up to do. Yesterday, I watched one of the four new releases, the only one of the four that was playing at my local movie house, and agree completely with our critic's review. And I didn't even realize that "playful nihilism" is a thing! Please see our summary below, with links to our reviews of each film. If you can, get out of the house (or apartment or townhouse or villa) and see...

Christian imagery is the theme here for the Columbia Picture adaptation of Kazou Ishiguro&#39;s novel, Klara And The Sun. In the dystopian science fiction story, where advances in genetic engineering have divided humans into strict, isolated social classes, an obsolete android ends up with a sick girl for whom she was purchased. The teal and yellow (blue skies ahead) colour palette, along with Jenna Ortega&#39;s saintly visage, &nbsp;suggests more optimism than grimness. The halo invokes holiness, divine favour, and the presence of God&#39;s grace. The teaser poster below (no credit block, folks) from BLT Communications foregrounds mood and minimalism. With any Ishiguro adaptation marketing attempt (See also: Remains of the Day and Never Let Me Go) this is a wise approach, as his work tends...

<title>Chattanooga 2026 Review: AMERICAN THEATER, Hilarious and Disturbing Look at America&apos;s Far Right Culture</title>

There's a moment in American Theater where the gathered group of (mostly) self-described "cancelled" performers and crew discuss Mike Pence and how he isn't actually hateful towards gay people. Brian Clowdus, the gay leader of the troupe and creator of their Salem witch trials-inspired show, says that Pence once came to a gay conservatives conference and thanked them for their support. But when another member of the group notes that one of the former vice president's charities supports a camp that offers conversion therapy, Clowdus makes a face and let's out: "Oh, that's bad." It's a rare instance of clarity from a gay man who was once a star of the immersive theater scene, but rebranded to an aggressively outspoken Trump supporter after accusations of...

From outright disgrace to global cultural treasure, the recent octogenarian iconoclast filmmaker/raconteur John Waters has lived a dozen lives since he first picked up a camera as a teenager in the &#39;60s. July is coming in hot and Shudder has announced their lineup of feature films and repertory titles next month.&nbsp; &nbsp; First up, the feature film lineup is one of the strongest the streamer has had all year.
