Twenty five years after scoring a resounding critical and commercial hit with the martial arts sports comedy Shaolin Soccer, Hong Kong comedy legend Stephen Chow unleashes an absolute howler of a sequel that fails to replicate anything that made its predecessor a success. The most notable difference between the two films is deliberately obscured by its English title, as Kung Fu Soccer - or &quot;Kung Fu Women&rsquo;s Football&quot; in Chinese - pivots away from Fung and his colourful collection of dextrous dribbling heroes to focus on a new team of female football players. Much as Ted Lasso has chosen to champion the women&rsquo;s game in its latest season, so too does Chow here, but the results warrant an immediate VAR ruling. &nbsp; Nominally set in...

In the world of publicity stunts to promote a movie Neon has come up with a good one for their release of Alex Ullom&#39;s breakout debut, It Ends.&nbsp; &nbsp; Neon is holding an endurance contest where teams of four can enter to watch a 36-hour marathon of It Ends. The event will be held at Metro Private Cinema in New York and will start on August 21st at 7:00 p.m. and end at 7:00 a.m. on August 23rd. &nbsp; We estimate that teams will watch It Ends anywhere between fourteen to eighteen times in a row. Such a choice was made when it came time to screen Maya Annik Bedward&#39;s documentary, Black Zombie, at Fantasia the other week. We do not know what that means for us here in Canada but that is at...

Frankie (Kristen Stewart) was once a star engineering student at Stanford, until the pressure made her flunk out. Molly (Alia Shawkat) is an amazing and inventive chef whose personality is not suited to the high-pressure stakes of the contemporary restaurant kitchen. But maybe they&#39;re getting a little&nbsp;too&nbsp;comfortable and complacent, both with supporting each other and keeping each other only in this tiny comfort zone. So when a case of mistaken identity turns to our heroines taking a ridiculous psychedelic new drug that also makes them telepathic, it means some serious danger is coming their way....

Miley Cyrus, the artist behind the music video we are discussing in this particular Sound and Vision, is a drag queen. That is in no way meant as a disparaging remark on either Miley Cyrus or drag queens, even if both the artist and the art form have been lambasted and dragged through the muck (or even scapegoated) in current day America. What I mean by saying Miley Cyrus is a drag queen, is that she embodies the spirit of that art-form, being a stylistic chameleon; celebrating music, fashion and performance in equal...

On a cold, winter day, in rural America, It was supposed to be Sheriff Deb&rsquo;s day off. But one of her deputies, Mikey, is knocking on her door early in the morning. The power is out. No one else has shown up to work and the town&#39;s residents are panicking.&nbsp; &nbsp; Neighbours, loved ones, their pets and entire livestock have vanished without a trace. The only animals to be seen are flocks of crows in the sky. And then there are reports of unnatural creatures being spotted lurking around the woods.&nbsp; &nbsp; Fear and paranoia is taking over the community, and the townspeople turn on each other. Some demand that a quarantine be set up to stop what they think is an outside contagion. They...

Ryan Murphy teams with Brit Easton Ellis for an 80s serial-killer adaptation, while Megan Park refreshes modern YA tropes. It was a warm and sunny day. The Shards The first two episodes are now streaming on Hulu and Disney Plus. Subsequent episodes in the 8-episode series will debut every Wednesday at 23:00 EST. First released as an audiobook in 27 chapters between September 2020 and September 2021, Bret Easton Ellis' The Shards is a fictionalized memoir of the writer's final year of high school, beginning in September 1981. The first episode begins on the morning that young Bret (Igby Rigney) watches a Saturday matinee of Stanley Kubrick's The Shining. (Which, by the way, was released in May 1980. Ahem.) At the screening, Bret is mesmerized...

    <title>Friday One Sheet: WILDWOOD</title>

With the capable and unpredictable curation of Peter Kuplowsky and his team of brave pre-screeners, the Midnight Madness (MM) sidebar at the Toronto International Film Festival continues to be one of the favourite parts of TIFF here at Screen Anarchy. The loaded line-up just dropped, and it has some special treats in there, including&nbsp;Rogue Trooper,&nbsp;the latest film from Duncan Jones (Moon, Source Code) and The Love Witch director, Anna Biller&#39;s follow up, The Face Of Horror (pictured above). For those who have never had the treat of a Matt Barats film or performance, I hope Anchors Aweigh&nbsp;is the dead pan auteur&#39;s coming out party. (We have covered some of his previous work in Cash Cow, as well as the Reveries films.) Oscar-nominated (Universal Language) director...

Our friends at The Horror Collective and Bloodstream&nbsp;will release Douglas Forrester&#39;s supernatural thriller Carry the Darkness, with a streaming premiere on Friday, August 14th. The thriller will branch out across more platforms into September.&nbsp; &nbsp; A troubled metalhead teen is blamed for the atrocities of a malevolent entity as the &lsquo;Satanic Panic&rsquo; sweeps through small-town America in the early 90s. &nbsp; Satanic Panic horror films are always interesting to Gen X&#39;ers because we lived through it - in the 80s. Putting this story into the 90s when &#39;wierd&#39; was making a comeback after the previous decade, in small town wherever, does make us curious to check it out.&nbsp; &nbsp; Watch the trailer below. Lah Kara, the daughter of lightsaber-smith Lah Zhima, is pursued by dark forces while on a dangerous mission to deliver his newly crafted lightsabers to those she deems worthy to have one - masterless, wandering Force-sensitives. When we first meet her she is on a ship with fellow Force-sensitives Homan, Juro and the android, Gramps. &nbsp; The Ninth Jedi takes place way out in the future of the Star Wars timeline&mdash;long after the fall of the First Order and the Skywalker saga. The Jedi and Sith have faded into distant history, and the art of forging a lightsaber is completely lost to the galaxy. &nbsp; Because of that, these newly forged lightsabers don&#39;t work like the traditional Star Wars weapons. Instead of having locked-in colors,...

Fantasia has all but wrapped up for 2026. We returned home after taking up the final leg of the festival after Kurt kicked us off opening weekend and Josh held the line during the industry heavy first full week of programming. Some of us still have a couple reviews to fine tune before officially calling it on coverage for this year, so stay tuned.&nbsp; &nbsp; The Audience Awards, Prix du Public, have just been announced and French mockumentary I Love Paris won the Gold Audience Award for Best International Feature. Yusuke Iwasaki&#39;s AnyMart took home the Gold Audience Award for Best Asian Feature and Masanao Kawajiri&#39;s Cherry and Virgin, received the Gold Audience Award for Best Animated Feature.&nbsp;Harrison Houde&#39;s dramady Tight Lettuce received the Gold...

<title>Teaser Trailer: THE HISTORY OF CONCRETE</title>

Tangents abound: from Hallmark movie minutiae, tequila hawking indie musicians, the Self-Transcendence 3100 Mile Race which laps for days and days around a high school in Queens, to on-set visits of Josh Safdie's Marty Supreme on location shoot, and being a guest at Kim Kardashian's award's dinner (sitting opposite Tim Robinson)....

<title>Echoes: After ZOMBEID, Can Pakistan Build Its Own Horror Universe? </title>

Let me be straightforward here: Yes, it certainly can make its own horror universe after Zombeid (2026), since the ending indicates the possibility of a sequel. Films have the potential of getting a sequel and eventually becoming a franchise if they generate massive box office returns, which stands true for Zombeid. There are unresolved narratives, leaving central mysteries and conflicts open-ended. The setting created a deep lore, opening doors for exploration in a richly built world that has a broad demographic appeal. There is one aspect that could create trouble for the Zombeid horror universe, however, as it failed to achieve it in its first part. Audiences should feel a deep emotional attachment to the protagonists or villains, which is only possible if there are...

Jim Queen (and the Quest for Chloroqueer) is a laugh-a-minute riot where the jokes come hard, come fast, and come often. And yes, the pun is totally intended. Bobbypills&#39; adult animated feature debut is all gay, all the time, and it is so, so funny. Catching this at the Fantasia Film Festival was an absolute trip and the crowd energy perfectly matched the madness on screen. &nbsp; Jim Parfait is the pinnacle of the Paris gay community&mdash;envied, desired, and fiercely influential. Everything changes when &quot;Heterosis,&quot; a wild new STI that turns gay men straight, hits local clubs and gyms. As infected men trade muscle mass for dad bods and sports obsessions, Jim catches the virus and watches his status crumble as quickly as his ab...

Sa&iuml;d Boumazoughe co-wrote and stars in Attack on Paradise&nbsp;as a second generation Moroccan immigrant named Suleyman, who, after being released from prison, returns to his Antwerp suburban neighbourhood to find his mother&#39;s apartment block has been taken over by drug gangs, arms dealers, and human trafficking hoods. He just wants to visit his mother, and get on with life, but a raid from the Antwerp SWAT force puts him in the middle of urban warfare in a residential complex. As our own J. Hurtado put it in his review of the film: &quot; What sets Attack on Paradise apart from [other large-building siege] films is the connections between characters, while the action is certainly foregrounded appropriately, with a less solid core story, it would feel more...
