Co-created by Juri Rechinsky and Mario Hainzl, the film constructs a first-person docu-experiment in which body-camera footage across multiple continents reframes notions of everyday life through contrasting conditions of normalcy.

Abu Bakr Shawky's film unfolds as a multi-generational family saga that situates an intimate love story within the shifting social and political landscape of Egypt from the 1960s to the 1990s.

<title>THE DRAMA Review: Viscerally Affecting Comedy?</title>

Dave Canfield aka The Creature Feature Preacher here to opine on all things physical media. I&rsquo;ve got titles from The Criterion Collection, Warner Brothers and Kino and a very special vinyl release from Made By Mutant. It&rsquo;s a rich mix of the new, the retro and the arthouse. I&rsquo;ve been waiting for Dante&rsquo;s Peak to hit 4K for awhile. It has the perfect blend of kitschy earnestness and spectacular disaster effects as well as a first rate cast featuring Pierce Brosnan as the hunky volcano expert and Linda Hamilton as the hot single mom. The secondary cast isn&rsquo;t bad either, featuring John Carpenter regulars Charles Callahan and Peter Jason. This has a lengthy &#39;making of&#39; documentary and an audio commentary featuring director Roger Donaldson.&nbsp; &nbsp;...

François Ozon adapts Albert Camus' classic novel, giving a deeper context of understanding the protagonist's senseless actions, based on France's racist colonial history.

<title>THE KILLER Review: John Woo&apos;s Achingly Romantic Bloodbath Returns to Cinemas</title>

The power of the gun is terrible and beautiful in equal measure in the work of John Woo, the inarguable alpha dog of the Hong Kong heroic bloodshed genre, whose unrelentingly and entertainingly violent streak in the late 80s and early 90s defined an era of melodramatic excess in action cinema. An infinite ammo clip here, a slow-motion dove there, symbols of devotion and faith scattered everywhere, there's never been a cliche Woo didn't define and then transcend, all in the name of high-calibre visceral emotion. Plum in the middle of his Hong Kong golden era (sandwiched between two A Better Tomorrow films and the furious double-header of Bullet in the Head and Hard Boiled) is The Killer, perhaps the most achingly romantic he has...

<title>ALPHA Review: Violent Grief and Desperate Love</title>

Grief is not a straight line that slowly leads from deep sorrow to acceptance and remembrance; it comes in waves, and can reignite like a bonfire at the strangest moments, even decades on. Fear can likewise come like an tornado that threatens to fling you into oblivion. Addiction can be a blessed relief from all that which tears at our souls, even if it kills us. Alpha, the third feature from Julia Ducournau (Raw,&nbsp;Titane), is an exploration of wounds fresh and old, the pain of growing up an outsider, the treatment of those marked as different and those who mark themselves. In this story of a girl&#39;s brush with death, the harsh lesson inflicted on her by a mother who blames herself for that over...

To Daniel Roher, the documentary filmmaker behind 2022&rsquo;s essential Academy Award winner, Navalny, AI (Artificial Intelligence) isn&rsquo;t just an abstract construct or the latest technological wonder endlessly hyped by Silicon Valley CEOs, the mainstream media, and self-appointed tech influencers as the end-all, be-all answer to the world&#39;s ills. Far from it, of course, &nbsp; Contrarily, AI signifies something deeply personal for Roher, driven by a generalized anxiety closely related to impending parenthood, the pregnancy of his life partner, Caroline Lindy, a talented writer-director in her own right (Your Monster), and the upcoming birth of their son. What kind of future, Roher can&rsquo;t help but wonder, awaits his son? &nbsp; Luckily for Roher, his background in the documentary world, not to mention winning an Oscar, gave...

In the very near-future of husband-and-wife filmmaking duo Miriam Louise Arens and Mitchell Arens&rsquo; impressively realized feature-length debut, Heartworm, it could be the day after tomorrow. &nbsp; A family of three, Avena (Amber Gray), Mark (Juan Riedinger), and Zamira (Ellie Reine), suddenly becomes a family of two, leaving Avena, a concert pianist from a family of concert pianists, and her husband, Mark, positively shatttered, lost, and unmoored. &nbsp; That same near-future, however, has led to a technological leap, NeuraLife, that allows for instant entry and departure into a fully realized virtual world resembling our own. It also allows both Avena and Mark an escape from the life-distorting grief that haunts their days and invades their dreams, turning them into nightmares of loss. But it&#39;s also...

<title>A MAGNIFICENT LIFE Review: It Shows One, Animated</title>

Biopics aren't my favorite kind of film. The things a person has done are often more interesting than the person himself, and it is not often that you need to know the background story of the person, what motivated him. Often you're just shown talent, or necessity, or opportunity. Or what happened. So for me it wasn't without irony that I noticed that one of my favorite films this year at the International Film Festival Rotterdam was I Swear, a biopic. It even won the audience award, as if to rub it in. And it wasn't even the only biopic I liked at the festival: master animator Sylvain Chomet, of The Triplets of Belleville and The Illusionist fame, had made a nice one too. His...

Sometimes it feels good to fuck over someone who has wronged you, but sometimes it turns out to be a terrible mistake. In the case of first-time feature writer/directors Raviv Ullman and Greg Yagolnitzer&rsquo;s Drag, Lizzy Caplan and her movie sister, Lucy DeVito, find themselves firmly in the latter camp when Caplan throws her back out immediately after breaking into a shitty man&rsquo;s house to liberate his valuables as payback for a rather nebulous transgression committed against her. When we first meet the unnamed duo of Caplan and DeVito they are sitting outside of a rather ostentatious modernist home getting ready to do the job. The plan is for Caplan to break in and grab whatever she can, while DeVito stays ready as the getaway...

<title>Thessaloniki 2026 Review: CANDIDATES OF DEATH, Homemade Horror from Poland</title>
    <description>

A long-term experiment in filmmaking, Candidates of Death started almost 20 years ago when documentarian Maciej Cuske took his son Stasiu and his friends Rafal and Adrian on a vacation. Friends since kindergarten, the three youths were fans of horror movies. During the vacation, Cuske encourages them to make their own horror film, starting a tradition they will continue over the years in a dozen iterations of Candidates of Death. A quick montage covers the friends&#39; efforts. An evil grandmother. Zombies. A monster in a blue mask. Clearly amateur work, but made with enthusiasm. Outtakes and behind the scenes material show how much fun everyone is having. In the present, Stasiu and Rafal relax on bunk beds in a camper, waiting for Adrian and Cuske...

    <title>SXSW 2026 Review: MIKE &amp; NICK &amp; NICK &amp; ALICE, A Sci-Fi Action Gangster Hybrid With Heart</title>

Mike (James Marsden) is done with the gangster life. He&rsquo;s found a girl, he wants to settle down, and he&rsquo;s ready to leave it all behind. There are a couple of problems, though. Number one, the girl, Alice (Eiza Gonz&aacute;lez), is already married to his partner, Nick (Vince Vaughn); and number two, he&rsquo;s really, really good at killing people. It&rsquo;s that second part that leads Nick to call on him one last time to take care of some last-minute business, and while Mike is hesitant, he feels like he owes Nick and goes along for the ride. What Mike isn&rsquo;t expecting is that the business at hand involves another Nick, and what began as a gangster story is now a time travel story, and shit...

A woman seeking to rescue her little sister takes a job at an ultra-exclusive hotel only to find that the residents have a nasty, violent, murderous secret in director Kirill Sokolov&rsquo;s Hollywood debut, They Will Kill You. Asia Reaves (Zazie Beetz) is a fighter. Ten years ago, she tries to rescue her little sister from an abusive father, but after trying and failing to kill him, she ran away, leaving her sister to fend for herself. After serving hard time for her crime, Asia is now determined to get Maria (played as an adult by Myha&rsquo;la) out of her job at the extremely shady Virgil high-rise, but what she doesn&rsquo;t know is that the building hosts a very violent cult who will stop at nothing...

When easygoing Nick (Jai Courtney) encounters a talking fox who offers him a way to fix his ailing relationship with his fianc&eacute;e, he takes a drastic step that will change everything about the world around him in The Fox, the debut feature film from Danger 5 co-creator Dario Russo. Nick&rsquo;s life is a dream as far as he knows, he works for his father taking care of the family farm while his new fianc&eacute;e Kori (Emily Browning) holds down a day job at a rural doctor&rsquo;s office. Their lives in the Adelaide Hills seem to be as idyllic as they come, but Nick&rsquo;s rose-colored glasses have hidden the cracks in his relationship that are obvious to everyone around him, including the local wildlife. When he...

Down on her luck Sarah (Hailley Laur&eacute;n) has returned to her hometown to take possession of the decrepit family home left behind by her deceased mother. Meanwhile, her nosy, unstable neighbor Sandy (Kelsey Pribilski) is insistent that Sarah continue her mother&rsquo;s holiday traditions, or else. So begins a psychotic duel between two women each dealing with their own pain in very different in director John Valley&rsquo;s American Dollhouse. When Sarah arrives to meet her brother, Michael (Tinus Seaux), at the above-mentioned ramshackle abode in East Austin, he thinks that the best thing for the family is to sell it off and let some developer tear it down so they can walk away with a little bit of cash instead of a giant headache. In 2024 Damian McCarthy lit up the horror world with his quietly terrifying Oddity, a film I reviewed for its SXSW world premiere, and while it was topping year end horror lists left and right, I was a bit less enthusiastic. This time around he&rsquo;s back at SXSW with the world premiere of Hokum, backed by the indie powerhouses and Oscar-machines at NEON, and starring one of Hollywood&rsquo;s most dependable actors, Severance&rsquo;s Adam...

A traveling psychic medium who specializes in clearing unwanted spirits arrives at a remote Japanese hotel to take on her most unexpected and dangerous challenge yet in Dave Boyle&rsquo;s ravishingly dark ghost story, Never After Dark. Airi (Moeka Hoshi) makes a modest living traveling the Japanese countryside helping distraught homeowners shoo away ghosts that typically present more of a nuisance than a threat. When she arrives at the hotel owned by Teiko (Tae Kimura) and her son Gunji (actor/producer Kento Kaku, House of Ninjas), she discovers that the entity that has been plaguing the property is unlike any she&rsquo;s ever experienced. Sending Teiko and Gunji off-site so she can focus on her work, Airi finds herself in a battle for survival against an adversary who...

Every year the SXSW Film &amp; TV Festival Headliner section gets more and more genre film-centric, and the 2026 edition is no different. Among this year&rsquo;s big ticket selections is Jorma Taccone&rsquo;s Over Your Dead Body, an English-language adaptation of Tommy Wirkola&rsquo;s 2021 black comedy, The Trip. The story of an adversarial couple whose country vacation hides secrets plans that each has to murder the other, Taccone takes the main storyline of the original and tweaks it just enough to make this one a must-see and a rare remake worthy of your attention. Commercial director Dan (Jason Segel) and his struggling actress wife Lisa (Samara Weaving) are going through a rough patch. Dan&rsquo;s professional dissatisfaction with the banal nature of his job, and Lisa&rsquo;s inability...

Edward Drake, Scott Veltri, and Francis Cronin direct the documentary, which follows one woman's brave journey through trauma and up a mountain, while the night she lost her legs becomes a true-crime story.
