Director Miyake Sho continues to sketch out the human connections among strangers in a gentle, playful, abstract way, blurring both fiction and real life/creators, as well as their creations.

I am a child of Who Framed Roger Rabbit. It came out when I was a kid, and I would probably need at least both my hands to count how many times I've watched it. It holds up after nearly forty years. So when someone told me there would be another film where live actors and animated ones would co-mingle, I was skeptical. Beyond Fest’s first year here in Chicago went off without a hitch. Sold out screenings brought huge crowds and created instant community amongst Music Box Theater regulars, industry professionals and excited out-of-towners. I experienced this first-hand as I arrived for a scheduled interview with the legendary actress Meiko Kaji, best known for her starring roles in Lady Snowblood (1973) and Lady Snowblood: Love Song of Vengeance (1974) as a young woman raised to be an assassin after the murder of her parents in turn of the century Japan. Revered for their combination of elegant composition, ferocious sword play, and fearlessly violent set-pieces these two films were enshrined in the Criterion Collection in 2016. In the article series Sound and Vision we take a look at music videos from notable directors. This week we look at selected music videos by Cory McAbee. Cory McAbee is a conundrum, both as an artist and as a subject for a Sound and Vision. Always on the periphery of mainstream indie cinema he is the true example of an outsider indie artist. His cinematic work is singular, truly oddball and extremely great. The conundrum is this: what kind of artist is McAbee? The final trailer for Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu arrived today. It was screened first at CinemaCon, in front of attendees and exhibitors, along with the first 17 minutes of the movie, where all the snowy bits from this trailer happen. Spoiler Alert: Scroll over the space below if you want to read this summary from Variety. Director Jon Favreau took the CinemaCon stage to debut the opening 17 minutes of the film, which saw Mando infiltrate a secret meeting of Empire sympathizers and blow up massive AT-AT walkers on a snowy planet. The bounty hunter shot, stabbed and flamethrower-ed his way through the base full of Snowtroopers, with Grogu helping along the way. The Empire leader sends out a recon droid, which meets...

Universal’s once hyped, subsequently derided “Dark Universe,” a misguided attempt to create a Marvel-style shared universe featuring newly imagined incarnations of the studio’s classic monsters, may be done and dusted, but the mummy, the stumbling, wrapped-in-bindings undead avatar of vengeance, isn't. At least not yet, anyway. Universal will try again, of course, but until then, studio executives concluded that resurrecting the well-regarded action-adventure series starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz would result in better box office. Rather than let a recognizable brand go to waste, Warner Bros. decided to step in with a new take of their own, Lee Cronin’s The Mummy. Presumably titled to avoid potential confusion, Lee Cronin’s The Mummy isn’t your great-grandfather’s mummy. It’s not your grandfather or even your...

Josh Heaps’ City Wide Fever is a real oddity. On the surface, it’s a small DIY thriller that looks shot on the cheap, which already narrows down its appeal. But if you get on its wavelength over the course of its very brief 70 minutes (sans credits), you might even start to feel a small twinge of nostalgia. Said nostalgia comes from a very different source than advertised. Billed as an homage to giallo, this certainly has a setup those Italian films would have a field day with: A film student named Sam (Diletta Guglielmi) finds a USB in a park one day, containing the life and work of forgotten director Saturnino Barresi, including his unfinished final film, which gives this one its title. As she investigates the...

Acts. Questions. Steps. Leaps. All words with which 'of faith' can be easily and appropriately clipped on, and applied especially to Caroline Golum's Revelations of Divine Love, a micro-budget marvel of faith-based cinema that dramatises (and implicitly modernises) the writings of Julian of Norwich, a 14th century 'anchoress' whose eponymous and influential text detailed social upheaval from within the thick stone walls of a church. We find Julian (Tessa Strain) at the beginning of her tale, ailing from a mysterious illness. Her last rites prompt vivid and fervorous visions of Christ which bring her back from the brink, immediately qualifying her for the honored position of local anchoress. For all the spiritual plaudits this brings, she will remain in a bricked-up room at the edge...

In the article series Sound and Vision we take a look at music videos from notable directors. This week we look at selected music videos by Edgar Wright. Somehow it is a wonder that Edgar Wright has never done a full blown animation feature, nor a full-on traditional musical, especially when looking at his music video output. In his early and recent music video work, he fully embraces animation as a medium, and the musical as a genre, sometimes mixing both to great effect. One of his early music videos is one of two he made for Charlotte Hatherley. I want to single out Bastardo (see below), where he uses minimal animation and the now somewhat archaic medium of photographed comic books. Bastardo shows the...
