Twitter, after all, was created to communicate among the founders; Jack Dorsey, Evan Williams, and Biz Stone, to create a really simple status updating system that could be updated through text messages.

Excerpt from article:
Twitter is what you make of it. If you find and are active in a community (tribe) using Twitter then that’s where it’s real fun and usefulness become fun. In 2009, 60% of Twitter users quit within the first month (Source), while 21% of users have never posted a tweet (Source). Twitter users leaving and quitting can be attributed to a multitude of reasons from lack of understanding, to not seeing the value in the site, or, as what I view most is important, not having a community to interact with. So if you are going to try out Twitter try to find multiple places where you can connect and meet users.

Twitter, like Facebook and other social networks, allows people to form communities and share information with one another. Unlike Facebook, Twitter can be boiled down to text and hyperlinks which can then be brute-forced into sharing pictures, local trends, and all other types of content. Twitter at it’s core is still just 140 characters, but through a community of dedicated users new functionality was created.

The best way to answer that is to listen to Evan Williams "TED" talk about how Twitter came to be and the concept behind it.

The simplicity has resulted in lots of nonsense and trivial updates but has also made possible the reporting of important events in real time.

What is a Tribe?

Tribes have existed throughout mankind's history. Initially the common motivator was mere survival.

The need to belong, is a powerful survival mechanism that is built in to each of us.

Today we form tribes based on common ideals, causes or topics we are passionate about.

Groups that form on social media sites like Facebook and Twitter would be a good example.

"Tribes need leadership." People are drawn to leaders and their ideas. People want connection and growth and something new. Usually they want change.

The ability to communicate our message to a large audience quickly makes it possible to form tribes with ease.

Most, it turns out, would like to belong to more than one tribe.

Give them the tools, make it fun and easy to join and they can't resist the thrill of being a part of the vision within a like minded group.

Should everyone start a tribe?

Only persons who have a vision and want to effect a change for the better should lead a tribe.
