The Oak Ridge Boys for best country music tweet of the night on <s>#</s>acmawards <s>#</s>cmchat

The Academy of Country Music Awards are (apparently) airing tonight. It’s the usual “celebrities congratulating other celebrities for doing their job” kind of thing. The Oak Ridge Boys who have been entertaining fans for decades, showed the best sense of humor of a “Country Band Not Nominated for Anything At All” by posting this tweet:

They deserve another award for “Band with a sense of humor that doesn’t take themselves too seriously.” We love you guys.

According to every single source, Al appears to be live and well. Jose was bashed considerably for this tweet, so he naturally retaliated in form the next day.

If you’re not reading @JoseCanseco’s tweets (and why should you?) you’re missing an awful lot of unintentional hilarity. It’s an endless stream of advice, rants, sports stuff, and consistently the worst spelling we’ve seen anywhere on twitter.

Jose hasn’t played ball since 2001, so it’s nice to see he can still win something, even if it is just the Fail of the Day.

There’s a right way, and a wrong way to spam twitter. No, erase that. There are bad, and worse ways to spam. There’s no good way to send spam.

Spam on twitter is pretty easy to detect. It’s often sent by someone with a really cute, fun, or sexy avatar, and is in response to something you’ve posted. It’s usually not an actual reply to your tweet, but a comment that is supposed to make you think it is.

In order for spam to work, it needs to be somewhat believable. The target needs to believe that one or more of these things is possible:

You’re a real person

You have something good to offer

They can trust you

The link in your message leads to something they want

Evidently, @Ted1qc4t didn’t read “Twitter Spam for Dummies*, or he wouldn’t have posted this nonsense:

Okay, @Ted1qc4t isn’t a real person, it’s a bot (duh) programmed by a stupid person, that kept posting garbage, with reference to @CaresGeorge, because evidently @CaresGeorge couldn’t keep up with all the spam on their own.

Since @CaresGeorge was suspended, @Ted1qc4t will continue to flood twitter with completely irrelevant garbage until that account is suspended as well.

We hate it when people clutter up our playground, but clicking “Report @Ted1qc4t for spam” isn’t nearly as satisfying as it used to be. It used to give us a little sense of power every time we blocked a spammer, because we thought it made a difference. It really doesn’t. Spam is a huge problem on twitter, and there don’t appear to be any tools in place to stop it.

Why do we hate spam on twitter? Because it wastes twitter resources, pushing them faster towards monetization. This means Promoted Tweets, and whatever else they come up with to take our focus away from the pure interaction-in-an-instant theater of the timeline. But mostly, because when we get notice someone has mentioned us, we think we might have a new friend. And when we go to read it, we find it’s just another jerk, wasting our time.

*Yes, there is a “Twitter Spam for Dummies”, but it’s not just one book. It’s a bunch of books, and crap apps and programs like RevTwt, SponsoredTweets, twittad, Ad.ly and others. What most of the people who use these things don’t understand: We’re on twitter to interact with our friends, not to be your target audience.

The US Congress is considering America’s first system for censoring the Internet.
Despite public outcry, the Internet Censorship bill could pass at any time.
If it does, the Internet and free speech will never be the same

If celebrities and special interest groups get their way, the internet we we know and love will cease to exist. The government and large corporations will rule the net, and decide what you can see, hear, read, write, share, and enjoy. Sharing sites like twitter could be gone forever, forcing many of us to resort to doing actual work.

Hollywood says they need the Protect IP Act to protect their copyrights. (Celebrities are behind this, because they haven’t yet bought everything in the entire world.) This Act won’t stop copyright infringement, and is actually more far-reaching than that. It will kill legal sharing sites, like twitter, Facebook, and all those other places where you post kitty pictures and repeat quotes we’ve all heard before. It will kill jobs, at a time when so many people are looking for one, and will encourage other countries to follow suit and censor their own citizens.

To be absolutely serious for just a moment, the bill being pushed through the Senate is a very scary form of censorship that needs to be stopped. They may vote on this bill this week. Please call your Senator(s) and tell them to vote against the Protect IP Act.

We find it especially telling that Hollywood is pushing so hard for this bill, so they can further pad their expanding wallets, yet the problems of child pornography, spam, viruses, and other internet evils don’t show up in their radar. They claim this bill is “a major step to make the Internet safer and protect consumers from the dangers of rogue sites in the online marketplace.” We’re calling shenanigans. They don’t care about protecting consumers from anything that really matters. What matters to them is money, and they don’t care what freedoms you lose in order for them to make more of it.
