A new fabric headboard with nailheads and matching bed skirt replaced the

mahogany 4 post bed.

The heavy draperies and valances came down and were replaced with lighter

panels. The arch of the window can now be seen.

The wing back chairs were recovered in a Schumacher mocha check fabric.

A simple but elegant chandelier replaced the ornate and heavy ceiling fan.

New lamps were added to go with the more updated look of the room.

The panels are a Waverly fabric called evening scroll. A perfect name for this

pale blue and mocha print.(draperies by Windows&More)

It's a boy!

2011-10-06T16:38:00.000-04:00

My sister in law had her second child three weeks ago. Another boy! William Crawford Moore. Of course McKenzie and Moore Interiors got busy months ago upon the news of the pregnancy. We did not know the gender of the baby until birth, so we started with soft neutral tones. The minute we found out the gender, we layered the room with blues and browns. If a thrid baby comes along, and it's a girl, then this space could easily be converted to a girl's nursery with just a few changes!

Pillows and a stuffed animal were placed on the bench in front of the windows for extra seating.

Above the crib are painted frames with fabric scraps inserted. Photos can be
added on top of the fabric or can be left as is for texture and color.

Christening gowns are hung on a cute painted board with hooks. (Hobby Lobby)

The glider once belonged to the baby's great grandmother. It was painted
and recovered for a softer look.

The changing table was a mahogany dining buffet. It once belonged to the

baby's other great grandmother. It was painted a soft blue and the hardware was spray
painted brown. This updated piece is perfect for changing diapers as well as
storing baby's belongings! Above the table is a mirror made and covered in linen by the baby's grandad.

A Precious Little Boy's Room

2011-09-19T20:01:00.000-04:00

This is my nephew, Bennett's new "big boy" room.

Twin bed headboards found at Scott's will take Bennett from his toddler years to his teen years.

Dog Fabric found at Forsyth Fabrics in Atlanta.

Playing off the dog fabric, Lea Moore (his mother) painted dog silhouettes on burlap.

We carried the burlap down into the gathered bed skirts and accent pillows, adding to the rustic look.

Kitchen before and after...

My husband's wonderful Aunt and Uncle allowed me to help give their kitchen a little facelift. Check out these before and after photos!

Fabulous new doors, make a huge difference in the family room!

No sew Pillows!

2011-08-24T16:30:00.000-04:00

Start with a double sided placemat...

meaning the front and back of the placemat are separate pieces sewn together.

Rip the seam apart to create an opening on one side of the placemat.

Slide a pillow form or stuffing through the opening.

Hot glue or stitch the opening back together.

Easy and inexpensive!

No-Sew Sink Skirt

2011-07-15T16:44:00.000-04:00

I made this skirt for our bathroom sink to hide the pipes and provide more storage. Our bathroom is very small, so I chose a very light, neutral design.

No-sew sink skirt:
I purchased 3 plain flour sack dishclothes and folded them to fit each side of the sink. I used stitch witchery to adhere the three sides together at the top. Then I added the burlap ribbon at the top and the bottom and secured it to the cloth with Uglue tape. Lastly, I attached heavy duty velco to the rim of the sink and the top of the skirt.

Here are some more great looking bathroom sink skirts!

This particular piece was already painted in a brown flat finish. I did not need to sand or prime this, as it was already basically “prepped” for me. After cleaning it, I applied two coats of Benjamin Moore’s Philadelphia Cream HC-30 as the base color. Then I lightly applied Benjamin Moore’s October Mist 1495. I only put a small amount of paint on my brush for this coat so that the base color would show through the green brush strokes, giving it a “fresh, beachy look”. I then applied Varathane to the top of the chest.

If you prefer the distressed look: after your second coat dries, sporadically sand the edges until the wood lightly shows through. It is important to distress only the areas that would normally see a lot of wear and tear such as around knobs or handles, corners, edges, and feet. Then apply Varathane to seal the furniture.

Basic Steps for painting furniture:

Prep: Start off by cleaning the piece with a little water on a dish cloth. Dry thoroughly with a dry cloth. Evaluate the surface of the piece that you’d like to paint. If it’s a sleek glossy surface (like varnished or sealed wood) you’ll want to gently sand the entire piece. Lightly sand the piece to cut through the original finish. If lightly sanding is not cutting it, then use a small hand sander with 60 grit paper. You don’t want any clear finish or wax left on it or the paint will scrape right off. Wipe off the remaining dust. If working with laminate and veneer, instead of sanding it, use Gloss Off…this cleans the surface and helps grab the primer/paint. If it’s more of a dry chalky texture (like unfinished wood or flat paint) you can forgo the sandpaper and skip right to step two.

Primer: Apply a coat of primer. If the piece is really an antique, you may be dealing with water spots and stains that will bleed through, so primer is required. I use Kilz water based primer…the easiest is Kilz Original in the aerosol can.

Paint: Use a fresh paint brush to apply two coats of paint in your color of choice. A semi-gloss finish is usually best since it’s nice a wipe-able and durable choice.

Seal: Finally, Varathane. It’s actually a floor finish! It is the only sealant that does not yellow over time. Not only does it not change color, it also leaves a nice low-luster sheen on the finish. Apply 1 coat on the piece and two coats on a top that will have more wear and tear.

Here are some painted pieces that will hopefully provide you with some more inspiration!

Happy Fourth of July!

Hanging With Style

2011-06-20T22:29:00.000-04:00

Have you gotten tired of your "wall art" looking the same throughout your home? You don't want each wall to look monotonous and lack interest. Here are some ideas that may help you add variety to your walls!

A backpack basket with brown and white plates mirrored on either side.

An old gate propped on a table or it could be hung......
My husband thought the weight of it might pull the sheet rock off!!! Not risking that!!!

Antique ceiling tiles paired with a simple square basket.

An old pine mirror surrounded by white ironstone.
A platter on top and matching plates on the sides.

A shelf found at an antique store adorned with old leather books, a small plate, and family photos. A hand colored lithograph is propped on top.

Two old doors with distressed mirrors flanking dining room windows.

A large round basket hung above a server.

A twig garden trellis holds prints over a sofa for a unique look.

Or it can just be hung alone...

Make it your own

2011-06-08T16:25:00.000-04:00

Have you ever been house hunting and had the hardest time seeing yourself in a particular home? Sometimes, the current owner's "personal style" is so overbearing that you can't see past it. As a real estate agent, I have run into this time and time again. I recently convinced my parents to look past the "fru-fru" murals painted throughout the downstairs of a home for sale, and focus on the great bones and layout of the house. Below are some photos showing how they transformed the house into their own. Don't let a little mural scare you. Paint can work like a magic eraser.
