Tickets just arrived for the BCO in CONCERT performance at the William Kelley Schools Auditorium in Silver Bay on March 3rd, at 7:00 PM! So if you ever wanted to hear the Blue Canvas Orchestra for free, this is your chance! We have a limited number of tickets, so stop by soon!

Join 321 Art Studio at your library for a fun reading of "Magic School Bus Under Construction," a visit with Ms. Frizzle, and the construction, strength-testing and yummy "clean-up" of gumdrop and toothpick bridges. Fun for kids pre-school age and above!

There is a sign-up sheet at the library to help us prepare the correct number of toothpicks and gumdrops, so sign-up is encouraged. We look forward to building and comparing bridges with you!

Author Talk: Danielle Sosin: February 23

Local author Danielle Sosin will be speaking at the Two Harbors Public Library!

Sosin is the author of 2 books, "The Long-Shining Waters" (2011) and "Garden Primitives: Stories" (2000), both of which are available for request at the library.

She has received some very positive reviews, including:

Thursday Afternoon Book Group: Root Beer Lady: February 16

This month, the Thursday Afternoon Book Group will be reading "Root Beer Lady: The Story of Dorothy Molter" by Bob Cary. This is a non-fiction account about Dorothy Molter, who courageously lived in the BWCA, 15 miles and 5 portages from the nearest road, for over 50 years. Her story was once featured in the "Saturday Evening Post," which described her as "The Loneliest Woman in America," which Cary refutes due to the large number of people who visited Molter over the years. There is now a museum operated on Molter's behalf, and her root beer recipe has since been published in newer editions of this book.

This is sure to be a fun read of a courageous woman, and we look forward to sharing her story with you! Copies of the book are available at the library front desk.

CLCW International Film: Jellyfish: February 14

This month, the Changing Lives, Changing World International Film series continues with "Jellyfish", an Israeli/French film of three women in Tel Aviv and the different bonds and relationships they nurture in their lives, whether it is looking after an orphaned child, coping with a new spouse on a bad honeymoon, or financially supporting a child from a distance.

This film will be shown in Hebrew with English subtitles.

Adults' Winter Reading Program: February 1 - March 14

It's time for another Adults' Winter Reading Program! Just as in previous years, sign-up is at the Two Harbors Public Library. Any interested adult is welcome to participate. Audiobooks and eBooks count toward the program, so if you have a new Kindle or Nook, go ahead and use it! If you listen to books in the car, don't forget to count those too! Every book 'read' counts towards one entry into the prize drawing!

There will be two prize drawings this year. The early bird drawing will be held February 6th, for everyone who signed up at the very start of the program - the prizes are two calendars. The second drawing is based on all the drawing slip entries turned in throughout the course of the program. Small prizes include tote bags and mugs. The grand prize this year is a $20 gift certificate donated by Louise's Place.

The program will formally end the evening of Wednesday, March 14th, at 6:30 PM, with a Hot Cocoa Party and book sharing! We look forward to seeing you all here!

Children's Winter Reading Program: Curl Into a Good Book: February 1 - March 15

It's time for the Children's Winter Reading Program!!! As in previous years, sign-up will take place at the Two Harbors Public Library. What is different is how kids earn drawing entries. In previous years, the deal was that, for every five books, a child earned a drawing entry. However, this was unfair to older kids, who would take days to read Harry Potter while younger kids could put in 10 picture books in an afternoon. This year, therefore, children will earn credit for time spent reading each day! We will hand out a game board, and for every day a child reads at least 20 minutes, one box can be marked off. For every five days that a child reads at least 20 minutes (totaling a minimum of 100 minutes), that child will earn one drawing slip and a prize! The first child to complete 40 days of reading (totaling a minimum of 800 minutes) and submit the game board to a staff member will win a stuffed polar bear!

As in previous programs, there are four big prizes that children can try to win:
- Vtech Kidizoom Camera
- Perplexus Original Maze Game
- IlluStory Make Your Own Story Kit
- 20 Questions Harry Potter game

Poetry Workshop: February 13

Writing Poetry: Memory is a rich source of material for all poets and writers. It is the substance of memoir but also a major part of fiction and poetry. What we notice, what images resonate, what our mind fastens upon -- what fascinates -- changes over time. At this workshop, designed for new or experienced writers, we will experiment and play with a few guided writing exercises that will help you reach into your own sources of memory, music and myth. This year for the Teen Winter Reading Program, we're going to try a little something new. Teens, grades 7-12, can sign-up for the program at either the Two Harbors Public Library OR the Two Harbors High School Library!!! For every book you read or listen to (yes, audiobooks count), you earn one entry into the prize drawing. You also earn one free entry into the prize drawing by attending any Two Harbors Public Library event, whether it is a poetry workshop (February 13th, 6:30PM), Author talk (February 23rd, 6:30PM,) Family Film (February 24th, 1:30PM), or anything else on the library's schedule.

It is the inaugural meeting for the Monday Evening Book Club! And what is the first book to be discussed? Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre!!!

Jane is an intelligent and kind orphan in an often cruel and indifferent world. Her dedication to advancing herself in society leads her to work as a governess for a mysterious man, Mr. Rochester. As soon as she thinks she might be able to find happiness and a place to belong, however, fate deals yet another harsh blow.

Read this classic tale of an orphan struggling to get by in the 19th century, and come discuss it at the library! Coffee will be served starting at 6:00 PM, and the formal discussion begins at 6:30 PM. Copies of the book are available at the library front desk.

Author Talk: Dr. Gerald E. Cotton, MD: January 30

Dr. Gerald Cotton is the author of "Green to Grey: The Life and Times of Gerald E. Cotton, MD: An Autobiography." In this book, he talks about his first desire to go to medical school through his education, career as a physician, and finally position as a teacher. His experiences have taken him from the Mayo Clinic to Duluth and finally the North Shore. Come hear him talk about why he wrote the book, and hear a few excerpts from the author himself!

Teen Anime/Manga Club: January 21

It's the first ever meeting of the Two Harbors Public Library Anime/Manga Club! Designed for teens, we are dedicated to appreciating Japanese animations, Japanese graphic novels, and anything else Japanese that we come across! (Although, I'm certainly not going to leave out other Asian cultures - if you are a manhwa fan, you are certainly welcome too!)

This first event will also help shape the future of the club, as attendees' input will be taken into account when planning all future events. If you have Japanese anime or manga you'd like to bring and discuss, that is certainly welcome as well!

KIDS! Join the Gooseberry Fall State Park Naturalist Carly Hawkinson at the library. After reading through a children's storybook, she will show and tell some fun and interesting nature items relating to the story. The program may also have a craft, game, or other hands-on learning experience.

Book Group: January 19

For January's meeting, the Two Harbors Public Library Book Group will read and discuss Joseph Conrad's "Heart of Darkness," a literary classic originally published in 1902.

Conrad was Polish, living under Russian rule, when he decided to apprentice to a seafarer. Early in his career he became involved in smuggling and gunrunning in Spain, and accrued huge debts in France. Trying to get out of this mess, he joined a British crew in 1878, learned English at the age of 21, and in 1890 began his own journey up the Congo River. It was his near disastrous trip up the Congo which likely led to his writing "Heart of Darkness" about the same subject, and his writings in English that would ultimately make him famous.

Hence, while reading this book, it might be worthwhile to look out for the portions that seem to be more autobiographical than fictional. The intertwining of Conrad's own experiences with those of the character Marlow should make for some very interesting discussion.

(Conrad's biographical information was taken from the book jacket of the Robert Bentley, 1902 edition of the book "Heart of Darkness.")

Changing Lives, Changing World: Travellers & Magicians: January 10

This January, the Changing Lives, Changing World International Film Series continues with "Travellers & Magicians," a film from Bhutan and written and directed by Khyentse Norbu, a Buddhist Lama.

This film follows the story of Dondup, a Bhutan government official who wishes to travel to America, his vision of Shangri-La. However, after missing a bus he ends of hitchhiking with an eclectic group of travellers and in the process finds love and a new respect for life in his own country.

The film will be shown in Dzonghka with English subtitles. A short discussion will follow the film.

Zeitgeist Films, 2005, not rated, 108 minutes.
