In 1971, with KFC now out of his control, Colonel Harland Sanders was approached by the company’s new owners, the Heublein Company, with a recipe for a crispier version of the famous fried chicken. The marketing department decided they wanted to call the product “Colonel Sander’s New Recipe” but the Colonel would have nothing to do with it. The stern and opinionated founder of the company who had publicly criticized the changes to his secret formulas (he called the revised mashed potatoes in a newspaper interview “wallpaper paste”), refused to allow the use of his name on the product. Since the Colonel was an important component of the company’s marketing plan, KFC appeased him. The new chicken was then appropriately dubbed “Extra Crispy,” and sales were finger-licking good. Now you can reproduce the taste and crunchy breaded texture of the real thing with a marinating process similar to that used by the huge fast-food chain, followed by a double-dipped coating. Unlike the Original Recipe chicken clone which is pressure-cooked in oil, this version is simply deep fried.

KFC Extra Tasty Crispy Chicken

1 whole frying chicken, cut up
6-8 cups vegetable oil

Marinade
4 cups water
1 tablespoon salt
1/2 teaspoon MSG (see Tidbits)

Coating
1 egg, beaten
1 cup milk
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 1/2 teaspoons salt
3/4 teaspoon pepper
3/4 teaspoon MSG

1. Trim any excess skin and fat from the chicken pieces. Preheat the oil in a deep-fryer to 350 degrees.
2. Combine the water, salt and MSG for the marinade in a large bowl. Add the chicken to the bowl and let it sit for 20 minutes. Turn the chicken a couple times as it marinates.
3. Combine the beaten egg and milk in a medium bowl. In another medium bowl, combine the remaining coating ingredients (flour, salt, pepper and MSG).
4. When the chicken has marinated, transfer each piece to paper towels so that excess liquid can drain off. Working with one piece at a time, first coat the chicken with the dry flour mixture, then the egg and milk mixture, and then back into the flour. Be sure that each piece is coated very generously. Stack the chicken on a plate or cookie sheet until each piece has been coated.
5. Drop the chicken, one piece at a time into the hot oil. Fry half of the chicken at a time (4 pieces) for 12-15 minutes, or until it is golden brown. You should be sure to stir the chicken around halfway through the cooking time so that each piece cooks evenly.
6. Remove the chicken to a rack or towels to drain for about 5 minutes before eating. (http://www.topsecretrecipes.com)
Serves 3-4 (8 pieces of chicken).

Tidbits
MSG is Monosodium Glutamate, the solid form of a natural amino acid found in many vegetables. It can be found in stores in the spice sections and as the brand name Accent flavor enhancer. MSG is an important component of many KFC items.

Turkish Coffee
The coffee is made in a copper pot called ibrik. Turkish coffee requires the finest grind. A heaping teaspoon of coffee for each 3 oz of cold water is recommended, as is a heaping teaspoon of sugar. Set the ibrik over a medium flame, pour in the water and sugar, then add the coffee and stir. As the ibrik heats, the pulverized bean allows a quick and full-bodied extraction. The water is brought to a near-boil, and just as it starts to bubble, it is removed from the flame. Remove and replace the ibrik 3 times to cultivate the foam which gathers in the ibrik’s neck. Pour the coffee into a demitasse and let the sediment settle for about five minutes. It is traditional to drink Turkish coffee strong and sweet.

Basic Iced Coffee
To brew a pot of delicious iced coffee, use 3 ounces of quality coffee per 64 ounces of water. (The coffee-to-water ratio can be adjusted for taste, different types of brewing equipment, and pot size.) Final yield will be approximately 60 ounces of brewed coffee. Allow coffee to cool after brewing. Keep it refrigerated if not to be used within two hours. Keep it covered to retain freshness. (To brew extra-strength coffee, use an additional amount of ground coffee with the same amount of water used for regular-strength coffee.)
Try these creative suggestions:
Use a dark roasted or flavored coffee for that extra special treat.
Experiment with a slightly finer grind.
Add Half ‘n Half or another dairy product to create a richer taste and pleasant color.
Add sugar or low-calorie sweetener to the freshly brewed coffee, and mix thoroughly.

Those of us who regularly shop on line are familiar with the array of free gifts, free bonuses and just plain freebies that are offered to a visitor to a website to encourage them to buy. How could you collect, select and offer free gifts, which will be valued as much as the original merchandise that is being purchased, put these gifts together and add them to your E-book? There are just three steps to do that very thing. They are:

1.	Identify your key words in each chapter of your E-book. Now, type those words into your favorite search engine. You are looking for free E-books on the same subject in more depth, by a greater expert than you are, or by someone who gives a new and fresh angle to the topic. Add a link to the free E-book in each chapter of your E-book.

2.	Research the Internet for related free gifts. Now you are looking for things that you could give as free gifts in your E-book that will make it more appealing and give it more pass-along appeal to your readers. For example: If you are selling gardening supplies, find a planting guide on the web that can be downloaded and include that as a gift in your E-book.

3.	Download the freebies. Visit the freebies pages on those web sites. Most sites have freebies and encourage you to distribute them.

Other key words I searched for are freebies, free E-books, and free reports and then gave the key word that I wanted the free stuff for. Like

Here are six ideas to help you start your viral marketing campaign:

1.	Purchase the branding rights to a viral E-book. Allow people to give away your free E-book to their visitors. Then, their visitors will also give it away. This will just continue to spread your ad all over the Internet.

2.	If you have the ability to set up a forum or other bulletin board, you really have a great tool. Allow people to use your online discussion board for their own website. Some people don’t have one. Just include your banner ad at the top of the board.

3.	Do you have a knack for web design? Create some templates, graphics, etc. and upload them to your site. Then, allow people to give away your free web design graphics, fonts, templates, etc. Just include your ad on them or require people to link directly to your web site. Make sure that you include a link back to your site in the copyright notice and require them to keep your copyright notice in tact.

4.	Write an E-book. Allow people to place an advertisement in your free E-book if, in exchange, they give away the E-book to their web visitors or E-zine subscribers.

5.	Write articles that pertain to your product or service. Allow people to reprint your articles on their website, in their E-zine, newsletter, magazine or E-books. Include your resource box and the option for article reprints at the bottom of each article.

6.	You can easily find products on the Internet that will sell you a license allowing you to distribute the product free of charge to other people. Look for those products that provide “branding rights”. That is where you can include your own name, website, and contact information.

[Insert Your Resource Box Here]

300 words
