Malcolm McLaren nunca foi verdadeiramente compreendido. Sua morte por câncer aos 64 anos, neste dia 8 de abril, irá reabrir o debate sobre o real papel do empresário e artista na história do Sex Pistols e, consequentemente, do Punk.

É inegável que Malcolm foi uma das figuras mais importantes do Punk. Entretanto, ao contrário do que a maioria acredita, ele não foi o mentor dos Pistols e não é essa a sua contribuição.

Talvez seja mais fácil acreditar que o Sex Pistols tenha sido uma banda puppet, tal como as milhares que infestaram os anos 90. Mas alguém que conheça as origens de cada um dos integrantes e, principalmente, a do John Lydon, não pode dar eco a tal versão dos fatos.

Malcolm tinha a sua loja com a Viviane Westwood: a Sex. E foi lá que os Pistols se formaram. Ora, a Sex, assim como a Acme Atractions (onde trabalhava Don Letts), era um ponto de encontro de jovens na Kings Roads, rua onde havia várias lojas de moda jovem.

O papel de Malcolm não incluía a música. Não havia participação dele em letras ou melodias. O empresário era, na verdade, um criador de situações. O show no barco no "Jubileu da Rainha" e a turnê pelo Sul dos EUA (fora das cidades tradicionais) são criações suas. Embora seja válido ressaltar que o episódio do xingamento do Bill Grundy tenha levado Malcolm ao desespero e a uma briga com a banda.

O empresário tinha uma equipe, muitos deles companheiros do movimento situacionista dos anos 60. E a experiência deles foi fundamental para criar as imagens de singles e fotos que tanto ajudaram a divulgar a banda.

Malcolm tampouco foi santo. Seus jogos mentais entre a banda causaram um racha que deixou Johnny Rotten isolado dos demais, o que acabou levando à saída de Glen Matlock e a entrada da figura mais detestável do Punk: Sid Vicious. Embora um grande amigo de Johnny, Sid destruiu a parte musical do grupo e transformou-o em um circo ambulante.

O Sex Pistols teria existido sem Malcolm McLaren. Aliás, o Punk também teria surgido. Mas ambos perderiam muito de seu brilho e força sem as idéias e a imagem do agitador cultural.

Rapidinhas:

- Malcolm morreu no dia 8 de abril, aniversário de lançamento (33 anos) do primeiro disco do Clash, banda empresariada pelo ex-integrante de sua equipe, Bernie Rhodes.

- Ele tentou empresariar o New York Dolls, já na fase final da carreira. Fez muita experiências (como colocá-los como uma banda comunista!) o que acelerou o final do grupo.

- Foi também empresário do Adam & the Ants e do Bow Wow Wow.

- Foi importante para a divulgação do rap nos anos 80 com o lançamento de seu disco-solo "Duck Rock" em 1983. O álbum teve dois Top 10 na Inglaterra: "Buffalo Gals" e Double Dutch"

- Um exemplo do uso de imagens situacionistas é a da contra-capa do single "Pretty Vacant": dois ônibus com as direções: "Boredom" ("tédio") e "Nowhere" ("lugar nenhum").
