With the crashing economy and rocketing cost of living, how will the motorcycle world fare in 2010?

We take a closer look at three key areas of the industry and what 2010 has in store…

Bike Purchases

Just last week, Motorcycle News reported on price increases across the board on new sportsbikes, including the popular Honda CBR600 and Yamaha YZF-R6.

Here’s what Two Wheel Centre’s managing director, Peter Scott, had to say about the year ahead:

“The bike world has been rocked by the economic downturn, and now because of the weak pound the new bike market is just becoming more and more expensive.

This means there will be a big increase in demand for second-hand bikes this year in the UK, and to make matters worse, the weak pound means people are travelling to the UK to buy these used bikes and export them, which will no doubt cause a shortage of quality used bikes in the UK.

So, my advice would be to buy a second hand bike sooner rather than later - decent ones will be like gold dust later this year.”

Helmets and Clothing

Paralleling this shift towards second hand motorcycles is the migration of buyers scouring high and low for the best deal on motorcycle clothing and accessories online.

There has been an increase in sales of mid-range helmets such as Caberg V2R and HJC IS-16, both £125.99, in comparison to the elite helmets like the new Shoei X-Spirit 2 at £580.00 and Shoei XR-1100 at £379.99. In fact, having noticed this trend, Shoei have dropped the price of their ‘entry level’ helmet, the Shoei Raid II, to be more attractive to the cost-conscious motorcyclists of 2010.

But safety will not be compromised…

However, though cutting back on cost might be a trend to look for in 2010, scrimping on safety will not.

New for 2010, the Hit Air YS high visibility airbag vest is already proving to be a favourite. Retailing at £299.99, these vests are by no means cheap. But the old adage ‘You can’t put a price on your head’ seemingly applies in this instance too, with the high vis airbag vest and the black Hit Air JV Vest being two of the top selling products of 2010 so far.

So it looks like 2010 may well be the year of second hand bikes and mid-range helmets, but quality and safety will still be priority to most bikers.

If you’ve been unlucky enough to take a tumble from your motorcycle, hopefully your Hit Air did the job.

Providing the airbag and jacket (and yourself!) aren’t damaged beyond use and still function well, then you can just deflate your jacket, replace the canister and head out on the road again. Here’s how to do it:

STEP 1: Remove the old gas canister

Some jackets have a plastic canister cover on the upper end of the key box. If yours has, use the 3mm allen key to remove it.

This frees up the gas cartridge. Unscrew it counter clockwise.

STEP 2: Deflate the airbag

To remove all the excess air from the airbag, spread your jacket out on a flat, smooth surface. On each airbag cushion, press down firmly with your hands, knees and legs.

To avoid damaging the make up of the airbag, do not roll up or fold your Hit Air.

Be patient! This has to be done correctly, as the jacket cannot be re-assembled with gas remaining in the air pockets.

STEP 3: Arrange the key box

Insert the 6mm setting bolt (supplied) into the hole at the base of the key box and tighten by hand.

Tighten slowly further using the 5mm alan key (supplied) until the hole for the key ball with a ring in the aluminium cylinder is in the centre of the key box hole.

STEP 4: Insert the key ball

Now that the key box is aligned, insert the key ball with a ring into the hole. Pull the wire from the key ball downwards and lower the red sliding cover over the hole.

If the ring stops the cover sliding down, tighten or loosen the setting bolt and/or press the ring around the key ball until it fits in the hole and the slide can move downwards.

STEP 5: Activate the mechanism

Loosen and remove the setting bolt with the 5mm alan key.

You must remove the setting bolt from the key box otherwise the jacket will not inflate.

STEP 6: Replace the canister

Lift the red slide cover into the ‘up’ unlocked position.

Screw a new gas cartridge fully into the bottom until it cannot go any further.

Replace the plastic cartridge cover by using the 3mm alan key (if your jacket had one originally).

By far one of the most popular helmets in the 2010 Shoei motorcycle helmet range, the Shoei X-Spirit 2 Chris Vermeulen Replica is utterly brilliant.

Looks

First of all, it is clearly good looking. The deep, rich paint job makes the Vermeulen Replica an absolute stunner both at a distance and close up. The attention to detail is just fantastic - a trademark of Shoei’s superior quality paint finishes.

New Shell Design

The new shell shape now has integrated spoilers and vents, rather than ‘add-on vents’, to aid streamlining and aerodynamics. The Low Pressure Air Management (LoPAM) system which circulates air around the lid ensures your head stays cool while ever those vents are open. Aerodynamically wind-tunnel tested, the X-Spirit II takes streamlined performance to a new level.

Safety Mechanisms

The new Shoei X-Spirit II brings many new safety features to the table, which are leaving other helmet companies clamouring for a piece of the action. The all new Emergency Quick Release System (EQRS) is exclusive the the X-Spirit 2. This nifty advancement in design enables the emergency services to remove the cheek pads of your helmet without disturbing your head and neck, thus enabling them to more easily remove the helmet and take the appropriate action should you have an accident. It is truly a revolutionary design that is being heralded by the emergency servicemen and women who have used it.

See More Of The World Through Your Visor

The X-Spirit II will make you see the world in a different light - well, in more light at least. It features the new QRSA visor system, which offers a massively increased field of vision. The visor doesnt just pivot on one fixed point as per your usual visor system - it actually lifts forward before opening, and sits totally flush to the helmet when closed. Clever indeed! What’s more, it blocks nearly 100% UV rays, and have a tough anti-scratch outer.

Like what you see?

We are proud to introduce the new 2010 range of Shoei helmets, and leading the way is the awesome Shoei X-Spirit II.

Re-designing the infamous X-Spirit, Shoei have really hit the nail on the head with the new X-Spirit 2. And this, the Shoei X-Spirit II Mika Kallio Replica, is an absolute stunner.

Emblazoned in Kallio’s red scorpions, the paint job on this helmet leaves absolutely nothing to be desired.

With various design alterations throughout the aerodynamics and composition of the helmet, and the all new <a href="http://www.twowheel.co.uk/news/the-new-cw-1-qrsa-visor-system-1721.html" title="Shoei X-Spirit 2 Motorcycle Visor">CW-1 Q.R.S.A visor system which offers a massively increased field of vision when compared to other helmet brands, the X-Spirit II Mika Kallio Replica is proving to be a favourite with motorcycle riders already.

The new shell shape now has integrated spoilers and vents, rather than ‘add-on vents’, to aid streamlining and aerodynamics. The Low Pressure Air Management (LoPAM) system which circulates air around the lid ensures your head stays cool while ever those vents are open.

Another great feature of the Shoei X-Spirit II is the Emergency Quick Release System (EQRS). This revolutionary design is set to become the next essential safety feature for motorcycle helmets in years to come. Exclusive for now to the X-Spirit II though, the EQRS enables the emergency services to remove the cheek pads of your helmet without disturbing your head and neck, thus enabling them to more easily remove the helmet and take the appropriate actions should you have an accident. It is truly a revolutionary design that is being heralded by the emergency servicemen and women who have used it.

There are more features to the Kallio replica Shoei helmet than we’re able to document in this short article. You really should check it out for yourself…

Motorcycling giant MCN this week published a top ten list of textile motorcycle trousers as voted by it’s readers.

Topping the list were the Alpinestars ST-5 Drystar Trousers at a whopping £179.99, followed closely by the Rukka Unit GTX Trousers - at even more whopping £339.99.

But fighting valiantly in third are the fantastic RST Rift Textile Trousers - at a far more sensible £89.99.

The Rift Trousers are a super pair of jeans, with Knox knee armour and a waterproof and breathable membrane. They can be paired up with the RST Rift Textile Jacket.

RST also took fifth place in the list with the RST Paragon Trousers.

Also included were the Spada Milan Tex Pants (pictured), which are a cracking buy at just £49.49.

Any road user will more than likely have used a NCP car park before. What any motorcycle rider needs to know is that this should be free.

Motorcycle News has recently uncovered a scandal - intentional or not - where NCP Car Parks have been charging motorcyclists to park - even though it is written in law that designated bike parking areas are free.

This has understandably sparked outcry among riders and motorcycle groups alike. The Motorcycle Action Group (MAG) have expressed their utter dismay at the NCP seemingly ‘pocketing’ money which they should never have received.

And the Pay and Display signs in the NCP car parks are similarly misleading.

They state ‘Motorcycles must pay normal tariffs’, but then refers the reader to see a well hidden section of a local bylaw which then states parking for motorcycles is free in designated areas. This information, however, is not readily available.

A really messy mistake, or just another way to plunder the public?
