Once upon a time, there was a stupid girl who started We Were Liars on the night before Thanksgiving at 11:30PM. A girl, who just intended to read the first page. Once upon a time, at 1:08 AM I stopped reading....the last page...and BOOM, except there was no boom, no one else around, but the characters in the book, they were still there and so I sat and waited to fully comprehend what just happened. The world was still intact, no earthquake, but for awhile, after I was done everything felt so different, I was sure something earth-shattering had happened; it was just the end of the story. The ending was perplexing, puzzling, and overwhelming all at once. I cannot say more it will spoil it but the end, the end, just WOW!

The book is remarkably well written, fast paced and engaging. I felt so connected with Cady, and her voice that stopping in the middle of this book was impossible! I was surprised by this because a white privileged rich kid who summers in an expensive mansion and attends private schools is completely foreign to me, yet I was completely able to relate to her. While her story, at first feels like, a dumb spoiled rich kid ala Pretty Little Liars, except, it isn't that black and white. Yes she is white, privileged, rich and sheltered. However she is also insightful, brilliant, flawed and tragic.
Whole the whole novel is phenomenal; the addition of the fairytales, as a part first seems like an innocuous addition, yet when you turn the last page, you want to go back and reread her first thoughts about the "real fairy tales": the idea of three little pigs, three fairies, et al and then reread and savor every word of the fairytales that Cady writes about in her notebook all that summer.

I will tell you my heart broke as I turned the last few pages, and in spite of all I believe, the author brought a level of Verisimilitude to the book that left me thinking just maybe it was not all a hallucination; just maybe "There are parallel universes in which different events have happened to the same people. An alternate choice has been made, or an accident has turned out differently. Everyone has duplicates of themselves in these other worlds. Four Secrets By Margaret Willey a 5 Star Book

This book is one you cannot put down! Rental, Nate, Katie, and Chase are tied together with four secrets. This books highlights the dark side of growing up, trusting friends, bullying and junior high school in general. I loved that these kids all deal with their detentions and journals in different ways. As a school counselor, I could relate to the social workers need to help them, desire to save them as well as her need to learn the truth in spite of their pact. I also loved how she was able to help them with out making them change their personalities nor feel guilty about who they are and how they think. The journals were amazingly written: Nate's is a masterpiece, Reneta's also tells her story, and Kate's secret journal is well written. How they use their journals to te

ll their stories is one of the most amazing aspects if this book! This is one not to be missed! It is well written, interesting, realistic and pertinent to adolescents and adult readers of YA fiction.

“It has been my experience that rewarding and heartbreaking often go hand in hand.”

“A genius shoots at something else no one can see and nails it." This quote defines this book. I had gotten this book a few months ago from scholastic based on the fact it was titled, "Counting by 7s". Seven has always been my favorite number and it was an impulse buy for me. None of my other colleagues or students had read it so I was shooting blind. That is why the above quote is so meaningful to me; the book revealed itself to be absolute GENIUS.

Looking on Goodreads, I know I appear to be an easy reviewer. In fact, almost all books reviewed are 4-5 stars but this is also because anything that is not good, I stop reading. I gave myself permission to do this , I now readonly for pleasure.

Counting by 7s starts out to be a book about a little girl who loses her parents tragically. It is, in fact, so much more than that one event. It is a hopeful tale that leaves you smiling at the end.

Willow Chance is the adopted daughter of parents she adores. She is also obsessed with the number 7, plants and diseases. She is a genius and comes with all the awkward baggage of one who is bound by spending time learning about things as opposed to learning how to fit in to society.

Willow is all at once, unique, brilliant, and endearing. As the book moves on, the story unfolds revealing beauty and flaws that are so realistic in a wonderful story that envelopes you from the first line. Additionally, Ms. Sloan writes her characters in such a way that you can both identify and truly see them as real people. Her characters are three-dimensional!

Due to her brilliance and preoccupation with the specific things she views as important, she has never been a stellar student, so when she scores a 100 on a state test that no one has ever scored perfect on, in 17 minutes; she is viewed as a cheater. As such, she is forced to engage in counseling sessions with Dell Dukes, a bumbling, overweight therapist who is not just incompetent; he is downright lackadaisical.

Right away Dell realizes she is brilliant and different, he has no “special category for her”. However, he still so narcissistic he fails to figure out how to engage with her. He does not even understand how to engage with others his own age. As the book progresses, his experiences with Willow and those who come to be a part of her world change him. This change feels real and important, not contrived or silly. “Every person has lots of ingredients to make them into what is always a one-of-a-kind creation.”

After the death of her parents: “A second can feel like forever if what follows is heartbreak.” This sudden and tragic incident, with its unplanned and unforeseen circumstances, Dell is drawn into Willow's world along with Mai, and her dysfunctional angry brother, Quang- Ha who is also in counseling with Dell.

This book is very optimistic mainly due to Willow and the strong women she meets in her life,; Mai and her Mother Patti: “She is like me. Silent. I admire that in a person. The ability to keep your mouth shut is usually a sign of intelligence. Introspection requires you to think and analyze. It's hard to do that when you are blabbing away.”

Mai and Patti help her learn to grieve, accept and become a part of the world. This happens while Willow in her own unique way helps Dell, Mai, Patti, and her son Quang Ha, engage and interact with each other on a much deeper level. “And just being there is ninety-nine percent of what matters when your world falls apart.”

This book is pure genius, my review cannot give it justice, too much happens in it and for me to give you too much of the plot is to take that experience from your reading. “When you care about other people, it takes the spotlight off your own drama.”

Honestly, I could not put this book down, I read the first 225 pages in a little over an hour at a children’s softball game, stopping only to watch my daughter. I then went home and finished it. It is a magically woven tale. Now I want to plant a garden, and find myself seeing the number 7 in everything. I now sometimes see the number 7 as red; which is weird because it has always been a green number to me.

He writes as one who remembers all of the pains and triumphs of being a teen without the "outside looking in" feel that so many authors of this genre are encumbered by when writing. The focus of this novel is the Quentin "Q" an awkward but bright 18 year old senior in high school. He has always been a bit in awe and in love with his neighbor Margo. As in most cases, as we grow up the friends we had in elementary school and middle school become a thing of the past; this is what happens between Margo and Q. They remain neighbors, attend the same high school but reside in vastly different worlds. As youngsters they stumble upon a tragic "mystery" that affects them both in different ways. Margo becomes fearless and Q experiences more fears of many things. "I think maybe the reason I have spent most of my life being afraid is that I have been trying to prepare myself, to train my body for the real fear when it comes. But I am not prepared." While not friends, Margo, who has become very popular, ensures that Q and his "band geek" nerdy friends are not harassed by the high school elite. Margo and Q have gone years without exchanging nearly a word, until one night near the end of their senior year. Margo appears in Q's room and asks him to help her take care of some "stuff". Q is terrified of getting caught but drawn in by Margo; who he cannot tell no and embarks on what he believes is the most terrifying and best night of his life." And we are going to wrong some rights. The first shall be last; the last shall be first; the meek shall do some earth-inheriting. But before we can radically reshape the world, we need to shop." However, the next morning everything changes and Margo is gone. Q cannot move on and begins a journey that encompasses more than just miles of driving, but a self-discovery for all who travel with him. Q will never be the same but who he discovers is worth all the terror, fun, and sadness. This book is an incredible story of self-actualization and just plain fun. It makes us realize why we are still so impacted by our time in high school, in spite of the fact we only spend four short years there. High school leaves an indelible mark on us all and John Green's Paper Towns is an incredible journey! "The town was paper, but the memories were not. Beacuse of Winn Dixie 5 ***** Great book for kids and adults

“There ain't no way you can hold onto something that wants to go, you understand? You can only love what you got while you got it.” Because of Winn Dixie is a wonderful read. I am reading it for about the 3rd time. I am actually using for my in class character/guidance lessons for grades 1-3. Yes, I know it is recommended for ages 9 and up but who would not relate to this book. The story centers around India "Opal", a 10 year old girl who lives with her father a preacher who has moved her to the fictional town of Naomi, Fl. Opal narrates the story and it is a delightful yet deep story of the importance of human interactions. Opal is very alone at the beginning of the story until she finds and rescues a dog, Winn Dixie, from the Winn Dixie (a southern supermarket chain). "..Just about everything that happened to me that summer, happened because of Winn Dixie." Opal's mother left her when she was three and she remembers nothing about her. She is a bright precocious but simply likable girl who begins to make friends and develop relationships in her new town. Her bond with Winn Dixie is just the beginning of the circle of friends she begins to weave around herself to help her cope with the loss of her mother and to create a sense of belonging. “I said, "you don't have any family and neither do I. I've got the preacher, of course. But I don't have a mama. I mean I have one, but I don't know where she is. She left when I was three years old. I can't hardly remember her. And I bet you don't remember your mama much either. So we're almost like orphans." Opal becomes friends with the elderly libririan, "We could be friends," I said to Miss Franny. "I mean you and me and Winn-Dixie, we could all be friends. ‘Miss Franny smiled even bigger. 'Why, that would be grand,' she said, 'just grand." Ms. Franny tells her stories and checks her out books; she also helps her understand that everyone misses someone and has experienced some loss in life. She teaches her that one can wallow in despair or create beauty out of it. 'I thought about my mama. Thinking about her was the same as the hole you keep on feeling with your tongue after you lose a tooth." She told her about her great grandfather, "Littmus W. Block figured the world was a sorry affair and that it had enough ugly things in it and what he was going to do was concentrate on putting something sweet in it." Opal discovers the rich and mothering type guidance in Gloria Dump, who talks to her and let her know that everyone has their own demons."You can't always judge people by the things they done. You got to judge them by what they are doing now." She learns in order to make friends and to become a better person she must step out of her comfort zone and interact with everyone even those who make her uncomfortable or angry. The Preacher and Otis are similar in many ways, both have a passion about something but they are both withdrawn and scared by their own experiences. Opal describes her father who she refers to as the preacher, "Sometimes he reminded me of a turtle, hiding inside its shell, in there thinking about things and not ever sticking his head out into the world." Otis runs the pet store and is quiet, afraid and terrified of interacting with others except by playing music for them. I love the simple yet complex nature of Otis."I ain't a dangerous man," Otis said, "if that's what you're thinking. I'm lonely. But I ain't dangerous." I cannot recommend this book strongly enough, the lyrical phrasing of the words, the simple depth of the characters makes you fall in love with them. This book begs to be read aloud and again and again.

Angel's Tip An Elie Hatcher Mystery by Alafair Burke 5*****

Angel's Tip by Alafair Burke is her second Ellie Hatcher novel. For the second in a series it is a remarkably well written and detail oriented book. Often, as the reader we have a good idea who the "bad guy" is, yet, this one kept me guessing. (For those who this surprises, it was well written, it IS a mystery, and I do not read mystery novels trying to solve them first...seriously who does that?) I loved the character development, having not read book 1 and getting a deal on this one via Amazon kindle, I was worried I would miss something; however this is not the case. Ms. Burke fills the reader in such a way it does not seem tiresome for those who read book 1 but is enough to help the reader understand the character development. After returning from a hellish year of learning the truth about her father's death, Ellie and her rich, black, handsome, and very likeable partner; Rogan end up with a high profile murder case. The young woman murder, Chelsea Hart was a college co-ed on spring break in New York with her two best friends. They go clubbing and Chelsea ends up dead at the hands of a suspected serial killer. Chelsea Hart, while a woman, and a murder victim, more than passes the "Lippman Test". Yes she is killed in the opening chapters, yet, as they struggle to locate her killer, she becomes a full developed character in her own right. For this I need to give kudos to Ms. Burke, many writers ignore the victim or their development of that character is flat and one dimensional, not the case in this novel. This goes to show the depth of Ms. Burke's writing talent! Throughout the novel, this seemingly tough, workaholic,and at times hard drinking character Ellie Hatcher, is revealed to be human, fallible, contentious; like most of us vulnerable. Not only vulnerable emotionally, but because she cares, she can be mislead and betrayed by those she trusts. I have to say, as a fan of Ms. Burke's it is this humanity, realism and fallibility in her main characters that I love. It is the main reason; I make a point to read anything she writes. The plot is rich with well developed characters, the city of New York comes alive and it is well written, edited and a quick read. It is one you will not want to put down! For those who love mystery novels and especially ones with believable characters and strong intelligent woman, it will not disappoint.

Missing You by Harlan Coben 5 ***** READ

This is a 1 sitting read. ONE SITTING! What do I mean by that? DO NOT start it unless you have time to finish it! It is that GOOD! Literally could not put it down. This is yet, another fabulous Book by Harlan Coben. I have NEVER been disappointed by the story or writing of any of his stand alone mysteries. He is truly gifted! Missing You, is fast paced, well written and exciting. The down side, I knew one aspect of the book from the beginning but I think that is part of the plan, because often those on the outside can see things better than the one involved. Oh and the John Waite song is now stuck in my head so I kinda hate Harlan at this moment. Overall, I LOVED! LOVED! LOVED! Of course you can read it in several sittings, but you will not be able to put it down, so plans will get cancelled, dinners will burn, children will be left unpicked up from school........ Buy it, Read it, You Won't be sorry! Then if this is your first Coben book, start downloading or buying the rest and read them!

"It's not life or death, the labyrinth. Suffering. Doing wrong and having wrong things happen to you. That's the problem. Bolivar was talking about the pain, not about the living or dying. How do you get out of the labyrinth of suffering?”

I downloaded Looking for Alaska on my Kindle based on reading John Green's The Fault in Our Stars, and on recommendations from Jo Knowles and Laurie Halse Anderson.
This book is raw, emotional and at times extremely dark. However, it is realistic, well orchestrated and brilliantly written. As an adult, I read this book with all my experience and knowledge that I made it out of adolescences. However, it painted a true picture of what being an adolescent with huge emotional baggage, the loneliness, and the fearlessness feels like. “It always shocked me when I realized that I wasn’t the only person in the world who thought and felt such strange and awful things.” This a true picture of how most of us feel at one time or another as a teen. Growing up is hard, it is not easy. Life is hard and can be extremely overwhelming. While some adults who read it may be shocked by the language, sex, alcohol, and raw emotionality of these teens, it paints an accurate portrayal.
Miles "Pudge" is a friendless kid who decides to enroll in the boarding school in Birmingham Alabama that his father attended. It is at this juncture of his 17th year; he meets his first real friends, falls in love, and tries to have a girlfriend. He also discovers adventure, independence and real friendship.
Miles “Pudge” meets "Colonel" his short and brilliant roommate whose home is in a tiny trailer park, "Takumi", Lara, and of course the mysterious, dark and love interest, Alaska. "Sometimes I don't get you,' I said. She didn't even glance at me. She just smiled toward the television and said, 'You never get me. That's the whole point.” It is these five who spend the year learning about each other over the tragedy they experience. As you can read the back of the book, you do not need me to summarize the story in my review. However if you still need convincing, “Imagining the future is a kind of nostalgia. (...) You spend your whole life stuck in the labyrinth, thinking about how you'll escape it one day, and how awesome it will be, and imagining that future keeps you going, but you never do it. You just use the future to escape the present.”
As in all John Green books, it is dark and emotional, but it is extraordinarily well written. He explores the depth of human interactions and pain in a way that both explains and explores teen experiences. We are all going, I thought, and it applies to turtles and turtlenecks, Alaska the girl and Alaska the place, because nothing can last, not even the earth itself. The Buddha said that suffering was caused by desire, we'd learned, and that the cessation of desire meant the cessation of suffering. When you stopped wishing things wouldn't fall apart, you'd stop suffering when they did.”
Read it you will be better for it!

This is absolutely one of the MOST brilliant books I have ever read. I was ready for a sappy, Nick Sparks type book about two star crossed kids with cancer, but what I read by John Green was so much more. “Sometimes, you read a book and it fills you with this weird evangelical zeal, and you become convinced that the shattered world will never be put back together unless and until all living humans read the book.”
The book focuses on two teens, one who has stage IV thyroid Cancer, and her lungs no longer work. Hazel is a fabulous young lady. She loves America's Top Model, lies around the house, has no real friends and is slowly and inevitably dying from cancer. Her Mother thinks she is depressed because she: a. lies around all the time b. has cancer and this causes depression; therefore she ships her off to a support group for teens with cancer. “Whenever you read a cancer booklet or website or whatever, they always list depression among the side effects of cancer. But, in fact, depression is not a side effect of cancer. Depression is a side effect of dying.” Like Hazel, this support group would make me even more depressed; I mean who wants to hear about the leader’s ball cancer every week.
All stinks until she meets Augustus"Gus" who has survived osteosarcoma and has a fake leg. He is there at the request of his best friend Isaac who has to have surgery to remove his eye, leaving him blind but cancer free.
Augustus is gorgeous smart, loving and well read. He is empathetic kind, and interesting. All the characters in this book are extraordinarily well developed and Gus is no exception. “I'm in love with you," he said quietly. "Augustus," I said. "I am," he said. He was staring at me, and I could see the corners of his eyes crinkling. "I'm in love with you, and I'm not in the business of denying myself the simple pleasure of saying true things. I'm in love with you, and I know that love is just a shout into the void, and that oblivion is inevitable, and that we're all doomed and that there will come a day when all our labor has been returned to dust, and I know the sun will swallow the only earth we'll ever have, and I am in love with you.”
The beauty in the book is not only the loves story but the introspection of the characters the wit of Hazel and Gus, as well as the inspiration and quotes of wonderful works of literature. “We are literally in the heart of Jesus," he said. "I thought we were in a church basement, but we are literally in the heart of Jesus. ‘Someone should tell Jesus," I said. "I mean, it's gotta be dangerous, storing children with cancer in your heart." ‘I would tell Him myself," Augustus said, "but unfortunately I am literally stuck inside of His heart, so He won't be able to hear me.”
Along with the quotes, the most sad and significant part of the book was the swing set. Perhaps it is because I am parent but it made me sad on so many levels. First, as she laid out in the grass staring at the forlorn swing set at night: “My thoughts are stars I cannot fathom into constellations.”
Then when she and Gus plan to get rid of the swing set and it finally is gone off to a new family. Finally, in the end when Gus remembers it. “We sat out there in silence for a minute and then Gus said, ' I wish we had that swing set sometimes.' 'The one from my backyard?' 'Yeah. My nostalgia is so extreme that I am capable of missing a swing my butt never actually touched.' 'Nostalgia is a side effect of cancer,' I told him. 'Nah, nostalgia is a side effect of dying, ' he answered. Above us, the wind blew and the branching shadows rearranged themselves on our skin. Gus squeezed my hand. 'It is a good life, Hazel Grace.”
I do not think I can urge you strongly enough that you NEED to read this book; like you need to breathe, it is in short a must read. However I will caution you to have a nice cup of tea, tissues, a warm bath, and time set aside because you will not be able to stop till you reach the end of the book. “Books so special and rare and yours that advertising your affection feels like a betrayal.”

Lessons from a Dead Girl by Jo Knowles

I decided to download this book after reading Jo Knowles book, See You at Harry's! I was not disappointed. I downloaded it Friday and read it while my daughter had a figure skating lesson.
This book will not disappoint, and in spite of containing 200+ pages it is a quick read, honestly, I could not put it down.
Lainey is an unsure and sad teenager who has experienced the death of a former best friend as the book opens. Her reaction to the death troubles her and she is angry and unsure. The book then begins to recount the story of their friendship in flashbacks from 5th grade till the final night of Leah's life.
As an adult, who has kids and works with girls, the trauma of Leah is apparent from the first time they play house, but too a kid it is raw, vivid and sad. It is spot on with all the tell tale signs of trauma and abuse. Victimization, suicide attempts, substance abuse and reckless behavior.
The writing style is raw, painful and precise. It is nothing short of brilliant, in its anguish and raw pain. The shame, hurt and despair that Lainey feels is overwhelming, I could feel it myself. Ms. Knowles not only meets but exceeds expectation and characterization of two young women who share a dark secret.
Additionally, the ending gave me hope and fully wrapped up the plot and story. I felt like Lainey was going to be okay and that for the first time she was free.
This is a must read for adults and teens. I do not believe in censorship so you must decide for yourself what your child is able to handle as all kids are different.

This book is yet another homerun from Laurie Halse Anderson. Clearly, Ms. Anderson has never forgotten the feelings and experiences associated with being a teenager and having to attend high school. Her books, remind me exactly of how I felt as a teen; stressed, isolated, but surrounded by others. The lead character in this novel is a male; I am not one to spend a lot of time reading books with male protagonist, call me sexist but I think it is more one of interest and perspective. What is also amazing to me is how well developed her lead character, Tyler Miller is in the book. Why am I surprised? Well many times, it is hard enough to write about credible teens let alone ones who are of a different gender. Kudos!
Beyond the usual teen angst of high school; where do I fit in, nerd, jock etc, Tyler has to deal with a house hold that is extremely volatile. HIs father is so angry the entire home walks on eggshells acquiescing to his ever ridiculous whim. His Mother is sweet and often found to drink copious amounts of gin and go to bed with a migraine during his father’s rants. These rants most often focus on Tyler, who has committed the foul deed. At the end of his junior year he spray painted graffiti on the school and was caught. This resulted in his father believing he is always at fault, being treated as a criminal by the police, school, and his parents. This causes increasing problems for him after he does the right thing for a girl he likes at a party and is later treated as a criminal for most of the book.
Tyler is extremely depressed and isolated in the book largely based on his father's world views work experiences and treatment of Tyler. Tyler contemplates suicide in many parts of the book, and it would not be surprising for him to commit it based on the character development and relationships.
The book is realistic and dark at times, it does not mince words or events. I could not put it down. It all culminates with a fantastically written scene and epic final words. I cannot recommend this book more for adults and kids.

One more word about this book: I loathe censorship and was appalled to see the words: "This book is not for children" written at the beginning of the book. I asked the author and she stated it was at the time when there was a push to differentiate between kids lit and YA lit. In my opinion, kids will not read what does not interest them, and this book is no different, your average 8 and 9 year old will have no interest in the experiences of an almost 18 year old student in high school. I have recommended it to my 11 year old daughter because I think she will enjoy it. Honestly, this does not talk about things that kids do not talk about among themselves or hear in school, and I think any time a kid will read a book we have won a tiny battle for literacy.

This book is phenomenal! It was fabulous the first time I read it when I was in my 20's; however as a mom and a professional school counselor my current reading of it as much more personal and darker! While I still identified with Melinda, I found myself increasingly angry with the adults in this book! I kept having WTF moments (truly there is no problem nicer way to say it)! The adults in this novel are so self involved and while not privy to their struggles, I cannot fathom why they did not at least try and assist her or push her parent any more than they did.

The other lesson I learned from this book was deeply professional. I found myself reviewing my students, past and present and hoping that I have not missed something this obvious. Yes it is obvious, a child whose grades drops, has no problem fiends, stops speaking and skips class, as well as looks awful, there is a problem. A serious one! As a counselor it is my job to watch kids, and pick up these things, now while I may be limited in my ability to solve it or even get the student to tell me the problem, I do have resources, and this is what bothers me the most! I refer kids out call parents and continually push them! I watch out for the kids even if they do not know and I try to be trusted and helping adult not disciplinarian, that is the teacher and administrations role! Also, it is my job to tell parents they need to do more, I am the child's advocate!

Finally, on a personal noteI would like to say I recommend and read this book with my 11 year old /6th grader. I did get flack about this choice, again making me crazy. Kids talk about a lot of things but if we put information in their hand encourage them to read this and talk about it, we give them power over their lives! Also, as an adult I see it with a darker more experienced view than my daughter does, but she too, hopes she never has a friend so depressed and one that no one realizes is so depressed. It is a great read but very emotional. I cannot reccomend it highly enough!, I It is dark and some parts were hard for my Katie but in the end she loved it!

Laura Lippman is a spellbinding author. Since her first book debuted in 1997, Baltimore Blues; I have not been disappointed by ANY of her books. I cannot encourage you strongly enough to read her books. She has it all if you enjoy mystery, suspense, great characters, and excellent writing, Ms. Lippman will NEVER disappoint.
Her newest standalone, "After I'm Gone”, is no exception. The book grabs you from the first page and never stops. I could not have read this book during college or midterms and passed! You will not be able to put it down. I find myself still thinking about it even after I finished the book.

What would happen if the man you love, the father you adore, leaves one night and you never see him again? Will you ever stop searching for the truth? What about when your lifestyle changes and you go from being rich and carefree to struggling. How does the loss of this person in your life affect you? What do you do when a retired cop starts poking around into a missing person’s case involving the mistress of the man who disappeared?

I not only found this to be an incredible read but the characters were well developed including the man who left them all behind, the father. Ms. Lippman does a fantastic job of describing the three daughters and their own struggles and insecurities that arose from this void left by their father's abandonment. The story comes to a thrilling and unexpected conslusion that will leave readers spellbound and breathless.

First let me say that his descriptions of OCD disorder are spot on for anyone who has suffered with it or lived with someone who suffers from it. I really saw a lot of points in this book for those who suffer from OCD or even other serious and life interfering mental health issues. However the draw back for me was his tone. I could not connect with him as a person, I felt a lot of narccism seeping through and found his tone to be both pretentious and elitest at times. This is not to say that he did not bare his soul, I just really felt like he was talking down to the reader. Perhaps it was the fact of his youth when writing this a proviliged upbringing? I am not sure whatever it was I did not feel sympathetic to him but I did to his illness and struggles, if this makes sense?

I absolutely loved this book! I had not realized the beauty that lies in physics and math until a few years ago! Like the author, I am not a physics major but the book and ideas are written for the lay person! Additionally, the book, is at its essence a beautifully written mystery filled with a realistic and at times somber portrayal of the weaknesses of humans. This is a mystery with well developed characters and intriguing plot points. For those who enjoy mysteries, history (especially world war 2), have an interest in keeping alive the knowledge iof the horror of that was/ is the Holocaust, or those who just want to read an extremely well written novel; you cannot go wrong with "Critical Mass".

The Danger Box & Darwin

I am almost done this book and had no idea that Charles Darwin was such a deep ad empathetic man. He was a family man who lvoed his children and was devastated by the loss of his 10 year old daughter. He also knew his theory of evolution would be contreversial and was a man of science. For as much as his theory is discussed and even sadly discounted, but then so is global warming and we can actually see that for ourselves; I had no idea how interesting and complex Mr. Darwin was personally till reading this book. I love the idea of the kids "Gas Gazette" and it took me some time to realize..................................

This may also be because I did not read any backround on the book was just handed it since my collegue and the school librian knows I have really enjoyed Blue Balliet's other books. Additionally, I can also see a nice tie in with core common standards and Science in middle schools or a nice G/T activity as well. The writing in this book is not as deep or philosphical as the other three books of hers I have read but it still will appeal mainly to 7/8th grade readers and younger high readiung level and interest readers! Moving On by Larry McMurtry

I loved this book, I read it at 25 or so and could not put it down. I lost my copy, and now want to reread it. Though the whole time I was reading I kept hearing the Paul Simon song: "Train in the Dostance". The two stories entertwine so well, that I went out and got Negotioation and Love Songs!

Skinny by Donna Cooner

Phenomenal book! I cannot believe those who felt she did not deleve deep enough into the Mother death issue. The whole book was about that, she ate because of it. I loved the writing style, the skinny voice in her head was wonderful aspect to the novel. I think it was interesting how she was able to grow as a person and realized she imposed much of the social barriers herself. In fact, I find myself still thinking about the book days later! I reccomend it for the young adults and adults alike.

I reread this book because my 11 year old is reading it and there was some concern about how dark it would be for her. I would like to say I think I see it with a darker more experienced view than my daughter does, but she too, hopes she never has a friend so depressed and one that no one realizes is so depressed. It is a great read but very emotional. I cannot reccomend it highly enough!

The Time Fetch by Amy Herrick

This book was excellent. I think it is a very mature reader for middle school. It would require high interest and upper level reading skills. That said, it was well done, had very interesting theories. It would make a nice GT unit with books like A wrinkle in Time. I also enjoyed hte ending and hope it hints of more to come. I also found it to be seasonally approriate. I will say that it did start a bit slow but I reall liked how it picked up at about page 60 or so.

The End of Everything by Megan Abbott

I really enjoyed this Megan Abbott book. I also loved that i met her and got it signed at the Albany Bouchercon. I picked this up this week and could not put it down. It is haunting. I loved the quality of her writing, the perspective and the questions it left me with at the end. I could not decide what I thought, I am still mulling it over as I finished it this afternoon.
I would reccomend it very highly! A dramatic and intriguing book that makes you remember and question your childhood.

Picked up The Wright 3 in the school media center. I loved Chasing Vermeer, I mean I LOVED it. So well written, smart, Funny interesting, the type of book I would have devoured at 11 and in fact did devour it.
This book picks up with the same awesome pace and interesting history, math quotes and art! Frank Lloyd Wright has always been a fascinating persona and this book highlights it!
I loved this book. It is a great read and really enforces the importance of math and geometry. It also introduces architecture as a career option for young kids!
Additionally, who does not love a book that brings up the Fibonacci sequence! " Fibonacci numbers appear in nature, particularly in spiral shapes..."
Finally one of the best lines from the book was:
"Coincidence reminds me of the repetitions of geometric patterns in the Robie House. The more you look the more you see it." It also made me think about fractals which all go along with it, so once again coincidence, repetition and math are everywhere in life!
Of course now along with The Calder Game I need to read the Invisible Man!
