Here are a couple of my favorite cheap thangs I delight in regularly.

FREE GLASSES
Coastal.com has a vast selection and high quality compression lenses and if you enter FIRSTPAIRFREE at checkout you literally get your glasses for free and only pay for shipping or lense upgrades!

$10 MONTHLY ASSORTMENT OF HIGH END BEAUTY PRODUCTS
Birchbox is my new obsession and the $10 per month is beyond worth it! What you get is a pretty box full of makeup, fragrance, generously-sized skin care samples, and hair accessories and discounts on the full-sized versions from the website.

$20 OFF A MANICURE, HAIRCUT, MASSAGE, FACIAL OR SPA PEDICURE!
Yep, Red Salon and Spa is my daytime employer but I definitely endorse our services beyond being obligated to. We have shellac manicures, bubbling pedicure spas, and colorists who give me unicorn hair (see gratuitous picture of me above)! Plus, you get to see my face when you walk in and make an appointment for the service of your choice and get $20 from mentioning this blog post.

OUT TO EAT ON THE CHEAP
Valpak is a Fort Myers/Cape Coral specific coupon website with deals tailored to frugal people who want to go out. You can find a good deal for just about anything and you can subscribe to get coupons sent to you by mail as well.

My piercer Lindsay gave me the option to have my eyes open or closed during the process, so naturally I wanted to watch cross-eyed as a giant needle penetrated my skin. Carefully marked and on the count of 3, I had a new metal ring of titanium through the tip of my nose.

So what’s it like to have my septum pierced? Like a quick pinch, and you’re instantly trendy. Lindsay explained that if you pierce the “sweet spot” in the septum (which is where the skin is thinnest and not veiny) then you will hardly feel it and it’s being pierced correctly. As you could see from my up close and personal self portrait, I went for the 16-gauge ring which took about four weeks to heal.

And here comes my endorsement -

For your piercing needs, Pleasures of the Flesh is the way to go – they’re professional and friendly, and their jewelry selection is vast. Their titanium selection alone was impressive! I went with a versatile titanium horseshoe with black balls (hah) and it looks bueno when worn flipped forward (as above), but I can flip it back to be hidden completely. The studio is located on 41, and walking in is the best way to meet your piercer and get an idea of what your piercing experience will be like and cost.

Pleasures is open every day from noon until 9, so stop in and get poked!

We were all panting and smelled terrible upon arrival, but Rex immediately found friends at the Estero Dog Beach. The muddy strip of beach on the Estero Bay is nothing but a couple of sandbars and some dead jelly fish, but there was at least 8 dogs and dog-parents wading around on that sunny Monday.

Rex is a disgustingly handsome Cardigan Corgi mix, and I have had him for a year in January. He learned how to swim this summer, and he’s pretty talented at it despite his riblet-sized nubs for legs. Ever loyal to the crappy frisbee I brought for him, he rescues it from 4-foot deep saltwater and brings it to shore. Some nice features of the Estero Dog Beach include a free dog shower and poop bags. If you want to be the most popular dog-parents at the beach, bring a picnic lunch and eat it on the shore. Every dog, large and small, will come hang out with you and then poop next to where you’re eating since you won’t give them any.

The Estero Dog Beach is open from dawn until dusk and is FREE! If you’re fancy and have a boat, it’s a great place to pick up me and Rex and let us hang out with you.

Here’s how it works: Bring all of the items you never wear or use (clothing, bags, shoes, cosmetics, home goods, crafting supplies) and a full length mirror (if you have one that’s mobile enough) and maybe some booze or food (if we’re lucky) and come to Fortlandia this Sunday night. We will try to keep our piles of stuff neat as we all try on each others garb but eventually the place will look like a nest of synthetic materials and scarves from ex-boyfriend’s moms. It’s ok though because everything you bring and don’t want anymore, I will take to a Goodwill Donation Center.

Some of the gems I have to offer: snakeskin print ruched leggings, a silk copper colored bustier, vintage bags and shoes (size 9-10), a stamp and ink set, among many other things.

All sizes and styles of dress are welcome, because I know I want your pleather corset from your “goth phase” and her cowboy fringed bag. I don’t discriminate. RSVP to the Facebook event page here!

Yeah man! Our FGCU intern Lisa Sidoran held it down for the summer and now I am back to provide my pithy perspective on the so’Fla goings-on. I can’t stay away for too long – I want to keep TwoThreeNine relevant to my life, my friend’s lives, and the atmosphere of the community.

I know it sounds heroic and all, but writing for TwoThreeNine isn’t completely altruistic. I realized without blogging I develop compulsive disorders. I NEED to write to an audience of invisible people with like interests so I don’t bite my nails and pull out my dogs hair. I want to keep my corgi handsome and my blog on point, so -

there are a few things I want to do to make the ole TwoThreeNine a better read for ya’ll:

Adding events to the calendar that I find to be truly worth going to, and endorse with my stamp that reads “hell yeah, I would be super into going to this.”

Making mixes again for download, because who doesn’t love free music

Taking more pictures on my daily outings so I may share my feelings about the good or bad bars/restaurants/thrift stores, etc. via this blog

Updating the distro and bringing it with me to shows – what’s a distro?

…and generally promoting the diy spirit in the 239 and riding bikes and making friends as much as possible.

Love,

For a long time, vegetarians and vegans had a really short list of menu options at most restaurants, and all of them contained the word “salad.” Restaurants are starting to see the big picture and offer better veg options, and here in Fort Myers there are probably more options than most folks would think. I decided to pick the ten best veg meals that our fair city has to offer.

A few ground rules: no chain restaurants, even though we’ve got some with great vegetarian options (Moe’s and Pizza Fusion come to mind). No restaurants too far outside of fort myers proper. My list also leans toward vegan or vegan-friendly options.

One more thing… no salad.

10. Ichiban | General Tso’s Tofu
Healthy? No. Delicious? Addictive? Oddly crunchy? Beloved by vegetarians and meat-eaters alike? Yes. You’ve probably eaten general tso’s chicken before. It’s almost too sweet, only a little spicy, and really tasty. If you’re looking for another option, try the Szechuan Eggplant.

9. Nirvana Fusion | Samosas & Chutney
The proverbial new kid on the block, Nirvana is doing some great things. Overall, their entrees are a mixed bag and feature more of an east-west ‘fusion’ (hence the name) than the more traditional, but still thoroughly Americanized India Palace. However, Nirvana’s chutneys and samosas really edge out the comptetion. The place also has a great bar and is incredibly supportive of local music.

8. Morgan House | Portabella Sandwich with Sweet Chips
I ate here fully expecting to be forced into eating a salad, but this sandwich is a stand out: Toasted wheat bread, sprouts, artichoke hearts, and marinated portabellas. Get it with their sweet chips (super thin slices of sweet potato).

7. Two Meatballs in a Kitchen | Skinny Italian
Two Meatballs could easily win dual awards for worst name and worst location in town. It’s really only convenient if you are on your way to the airport. Or you really like italian food. However, this dish is awesome in it’s simplicity and freshness: multigrain pasta with garlic, fresh tomatoes, pine nuts, spinach and basil. An Italian deli/market is located right next door.

6. India Palace | Aloo Gobi (Potato & Chickpea Curry)
A fort myers institution with tons of vegetarian options on the menu (a whole page, in fact). Skip their lunch menu and head for the dinner portions. Expect great food and weirdly standoffish service. Their Aloo Gobi is a good call for anyone who loves Indian food or lots of carbs.

5. Bacchus | Hummus & Pita Chips
Ok, so it’s not an entree, but their hummus is amazing. It’s served with alternatively toasted and fried pita chips and goes down really well in between a couple of beers.

4. Yabo | Capellini
Capellini is a really thin angel hair pasta. Yabo prepares it with a red sauce that uses massive amounts of garlic. somehow, the sum is greater than it’s parts in this case… much greater. Yabo is located toward the beach and has a grunge/90s’s rock vibe going on. Most of the small menu is meat and seafood, but even as perhaps the sole veg option on the menu, this place is worth the trip. They’ve also got some great beers available and make a nice date spot.

3. Opa! | Veggie Hummus Wrap
There is a really basic equation in greek/mediterranean/middle eastern food, and it goes like this: falafel > everything else. There’s a reason it’s ubiquitious street food in nyc and big cities everywhere. However, opa somehow reverses this equation. Their falafel is good, sure, but their veggie hummus pita is even better. The hummus is incredible and the veggies are perfectly fresh.

2. Chef Brooke’s Natural Cafe | Bean & Rice Burrito
Chef Brooke is an eccentric local staple. Her regularly rotating menu has lots of great vegetarian and always at least a few vegan options, all served with a ton of side items which range from marinated beet salad to simple greens. The bean & rice burrito is not only delicious but healthy, but that’s standard fare for her. Also, her unfortunately named but incredibly delicious faeriecakes are amazing and vegan.

1. Siam Thai | Green Curry with Steamed Tofu
Technically, siam thai is in North Fort Myers (right over the bridge!). Technically, Suriya Thai makes a better pad thai, but that stuff’s for tourists. Forget the technicalities, because you either love curry or you are at a stage in your life where for some reason, you have not yet tried curry. Either way, Siam Thai has the best curry in the area. Red (savory), green (earthy), panang (sweet), whichever- they’ll even make it for you without the fish sauce if you ask real nice. And if steamed tofu is too healthy for you, you can get it fried.

Runner’s up: in the downtown area, what’s up dogs has tons of potential and will serve you peanut butter, jelly and strangeness on a hotdog bun. Red Rock Saloon has a rice & bean veggie burger worth checking out. The Bar Association makes consistently awesome food with occasional vegetarian fare. For breakfast, Bennett’s oatmeal destroys all comers. Elsewhere in town, EL Chinese (near the Bell Tower) has several great vegetarian options.

Worthy mentions in the cape: Phensri Thai makes some killer non-curry Thai dishes. Back to Nature has many excellent options, including the ALT (avocado, lettuce & tomato). Finally, while a chain, Loving Hut is 100% vegan.

It’s easy to think that nothing ever changes in a city like Fort Myers. However, you can chart a positive line of growth if you look at it right. Just take a look at the above list- how many of these restaurants popped up or radically revamped their menus in just the last few years? It’s not a bad time to be veg in Fort Myers.
