Resolution and Printing on Social Sharing Websites (Facebook, PicasaWeb, and Flickr)

For the photogs out there who like to share photos with family and friends for printing –

Facebook:

Facebook allows users the option to upload photos at 2048 pixels along the longest side. A photo with 2048 pixels on the long end with the 4x6 format will print at just over 4x6 inches at 341 pixels per inch (the professional standard is 300 ppi). In other words Facebook’s maximum resolution for uploads is excellent for 4x6 photos (at over 300 ppi) and 5x7 (at 293 ppi), and possibly okay for 8x10 (at 205 ppi). Larger photos will automatically be resized before the upload so that you don’t have to wait for long uploads.

Google PicasaWeb

From what I can tell, Google has no size limit. However once you reach 7 gigabytes (which includes your Gmail storage) the maximum size for photos becomes 800x800 pixels. If you are a Google+ member the maximum size is 2048 pixels – the same as Facebook.

If you wish to upload larger images, you can pay for additional storage:

20 GB - $5/yr
80 GB - $20/yr
200 GB - $50/yr
400 GB - $100/yr
1 TB - $256/yr
2 TB - $512/yr
4 TB - $1024/yr
8 TB - $2048/yr
16 TB - $4096/yr

Flickr

Using Flickr’s free account you can upload photos that have a maximum of 1024 pixels on the long side. If you get a Flickr Pro account for $24.95 a year, you can upload photos with a maximum size of 20 megabytes which will be maximum resolution for most users.

Google has no limit on the resolution of the photo, but has a maximum of 7 gigabytes of storage offered for free. Beyond that, paid storage plans are available, or you can switch to a maximum of 2048x2048 pixel photos for free.

Flickr offers a maximum resolution of 1024x1024 for free users and practically unlimited resolution for $24.95 per year.

I picked up another flash yesterday and I really wanted to try this. I did it in my (small) living room and had a lot of difficulty keeping the key light from lighting the background. So a lot of the darkening was done in post processing.

Elle's back for 11 month photos! This time we went to the Chesterfield Berry Farm for pumpkin season. The fields of pumpkins provided a great backdrop for these portraits.

James Center Clock Tower Drummer

This clock tower is located outside the James Center in Richmond, Virginia. As I was passing by I noticed the sun passing through this opening in the tower frame. I thought it would look really cool if I silhouetted the drummer statue. I also liked the warm color tones inside the tower versus the cool blue sky. It took a few tries to line the sun up behind the head and to have the whole statue unobstructed by the frame of the tower. But I finally got it.

This is one of the shots from when I was trying to find places to do night shots of the skyline from. At first I didn't even look through these because I thought they would have too much contrast between the shaded and non-shaded areas. I was able to rescue the shadows with the RAW file and some of the shots turned out decent.

I got to shoot Elle again -- this time at Maymont. There were several costume changes including a Team Jacob onesie. This was the first time Elle was able to stand, so we took some fun shots of Elle standing on a bridge looking at a waterfall.

This is another one of those Richmond night shots I've been after. I've always been nervous to do it. You are out on the middle of the Manchester bridge at night with nowhere to run should someone decide to mug you. I wish I could have gotten more light trails from the cars on the right side. Maybe next time :)

I've been wanting this shot for a long time now. I got the idea from someone on Flickr (http://www.flickr.com/photos/skynoir/4678543856/in/faves-tyronejohnson/). On the first attempt the I made it to the spot (top of the James Monroe building parking deck) around 6:15am -- too late. The next day I came back at about 5:30. I wasn't able to get a long enough exposure to get all of the light trails that I wanted so I had to merge two images in Photoshop to get this one.

I shot this with a Nikon D3000 with the kit lens (18-55mm f/3.5-5.6).

This portrait was taken just outside of the Holocaust Museum in Richmond, Virginia. We waited until just before sunset and took shots in this area and long the canal walk. Look for more to come soon.

Saturday was Scott Kelby's 3rd Annual World Wide Photo Walk (http://worldwidephotowalk.com/). Our group in Richmond walked from 4-6:30 pm from Bottoms Up Pizza to 2nd and Cary St. We then headed south to Brown's Island and took the Canal Walk back east to Bottoms Up. I didn't get as many good shots as I wanted, but I'm proud of myself for making it the whole two and a half hours in the 101-degree heat!

I had a great time and got to meet a lot of great people!

Friday night I had the opportunity to shoot at the Legwarmers (awesome 80's cover band) concert at the National in Richmond, Virginia. Jared Jones, a good friend of mine and lead singer of Lust Not Love, opened for the Legwarmers and was able to get me all access. I had a great time and got some great shots.
