Saw this video today via @thinktradigital and really liked it, it has a great feel to it. It’s the video for ‘Love Is Making Its Way Back Home” by Josh Rtter. I also thought it would fit in well with the colour scheme of my site!

It was directed by Erez Horovitz with illustration by Sarah Graves and type by Savannah Wolf.

The video was created with over 12,000 pieces of paper, shown as it was shot, with no effects added. Very nicely done.

I’ve heard more designers talk about their thoughts, inspirations and the subtleties of what makes good or successful design, than most people have had hot dinners. Then there’s Aaron Draplin of Draplin Design Co. His take on why America is graphically f***ed is brilliant. I don’t think the UK fares much better to be honest.

Love these retro Muppet concert posters that I saw through twitter, via @thinktradigital. Created by illustrator Michael De Pippo the vector illustrations and simple bold colours are really eye-catching. Looks like they will be screenprinted soon and available through his site. Might have to get a couple for the kids rooms.

There’s not much that can be said about 9/11 that hasn’t been said already. I like to put things on this site that have inspired me in my work. But nothing has ever inspired me in life as much as this short film, The Red Bandana, that my sister-in-law passed on to me. This man, Welles Crowther, was truly an angel.

wish i’d done that – rex cinema

I came across these posters for the Rex Cinema in Berkhamstead in England, and was blown away by the sheer beauty of them. They were created by Steve Williams and Adrian Lim, a highly awarded advertising creative team. Not only are the posters superb, the listings for the cinema are a work of typographic art (see below). It was hard to pick just a few to show on here, as there were so many great ones, but you can see the full set here. If I had to pick one for my wall, I’d pick ‘Goldfinger’. Which one would you choose?

‘little women the musical’ poster design

It’s been a busy few months, hence the reason my blog posts have been sporadic to say the least. I’m close to finishing a ‘longish’ freelance contract which has kept me quiet for a couple of months. However during this period I was approached to create a design for a new production of “Little Women the Musical” being produced by Samuel Julyan and Skye Crawford.

The show based on Louisa May Alcott’s classic 1869 semi-autobiographical novel, runs in December and January at the Lost Theatre in Wandsworth.

The main requirement from the client was to create a simple iconic image and type design that would embody the show and be versatile for all types of promotions. Examples they used were, Cats, Les Mis and Lion King. No pressure there then!

It’s a combination of things that make those particular designs so iconic and recognisable. Firstly they are great designs and evocative of the show. Secondly the shows they publicise are massively popular. I’ve seen plenty of great posters for crap shows, who remembers them? And thirdly the designs are plastered everywhere, that’s a surefire way to get people to remember them.

Thankfully the client was happy, others will judge it’s creative merit, but mainly time will tell if it ticks the box of the client’s main requirement.

While I’m on this vintage, authentic typography kick, check this video out. Is this the coolest place or what? Yee-haw Industrial Letterpress in Knoxville Tennessee. They even mix some Jack Daniel’s in the ink….brilliant, although a tad wasteful as it could be put to much better use. They have a large shop of prints, t-shirts etc and a facebook page that shows the designs that were featured in this video.

The Jack Daniels posters eventually became hand painted wallscapes across the United States. Here’s a short film about it.

a bit of typographic craft for the shopping masses

Every year we visit our family in the States, and every year we spend time walking around Target. My wife loves it, my kids love it, and I’m able to stock up on my Sharpie pens at half the UK price! But this summer I’ve got a whole new area to explore.

Yesterday, Target released a range of clothing created in partnership with the Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum based in Two Rivers, Wisconsin. Visiting the museum is on my bucket list along with The Grand Ole Opry and Camp Nou in Barcelona (a bit random I know). The museum has been in operation since 1880 and is now a 40,000 square foot working museum.

Target have worked with designers in the past such as Isaac Mizrahi, but partnering with this small print museum seems like a shift in attitude. With the massive success of sites like Etsy it looks like handcrafted, unique and authentic designs are going mainstream. There have been vintage clothing ranges before but I’m hoping Hamilton and Target have finally done them well.

I’m looking forward to seeing the designs with my own eyes and who knows might even fill up a bag or two.

at last, football and typography meet

It’s not very often you get to see work that combines your work passion with your outside passion, but I have, and thanks goes to Zoran Lucić for designing this vast series of typographic posters celebrating the greatest players to have played the game. They have a great retro feel to them and each one is individually crafted. Just a shame there are no Charlton Athletic players in the series, and please no cracks about them not being a proper football team, I could write a whole blog just about that, in fact many do!

Nice video documenting the process that went into creating the posters below. They were produced by the multidisciplinary design studio atipo from Northern Spain. Nicely done particularly love the Carousel Medium one, there’s some fantastic shapes in that typeface. Note to self – next project, propose painting type onto models!
