Blog Ideas

At first when I started to blog, I tried to be very factual and then I started to pay attention to other blogs and why some where a lot more popular than mine. I was surprised to see they were more informal, more conversational about day to day things.

So I tried to change the tone of my posts and it felt good because I was not only getting bored with presenting facts, but it occurred to me that there were already many other sites on line where people could get the same information I was writing about. It felt good to add more of myself, things were easier to write.

Now I’m thinking that there are so many sites and blogs on the web, that my collection of information on a topic is making life easier for some folks by grouping information on a single topic together on one site. With large sites that cover everything people have to spend time looking through them to find what they want. When they go to one of my blogs they may find everything they want right there without wasting time. It’s like regrouping.

Take U-Tube for example, I love watching the cute video’s people send in, and I know that you can look them up, but I find I get very distracted by other videos I come across along the way. One day I came upon a blog who collects the cute ones only. So now I just go to her blog and can immediately see what I want to see. What kind of blogs do you have?

Ideas For Blog Posts

Sometimes we all experience some form of writers block. This past year for me it’s been the death of my parents and all the crap that must be done afterward. I didn’t feel like writing so I didn’t. However, I realize now that it would have been better to write anything as a post than nothing. Even if that anything is somewhat off the subject. It’s good for you and your readers.

A Reminder of What Makes a Good Blog

A good blog writer does not write long articles.
Do not write long paragraphs either.
Make sure your post title is catchy, but tells what the post is about.
If you’re trying to use keywords, don’t overdo it.
Make sure it doesn’t take forever to load your blog.
Don’t even think of plagiarizing.
Too many ads and banners distract from the posts and each other.
Add some or at least one photo to each post.
If you borrow the photo, make sure you have the right to do so and credit the photographer.
Keep the blog simple enough to read, but attractive enough to draw readers to your site.

What Happens To Some Of Your Articles

There was a site that I wrote for a couple years ago. They were “how to” articles and they paid in credits, not cash. I wrote about 8 or more articles for them, because the credits they paid were legit in that they could be used as cash at a large number of shops on-line. Among many other things that’s how I got my beloved ice crusher.

I stopped writing for them because I felt as they wanted my articles for my expertise on the topics, there was too much interference by the editors. The editors had way too many ideas which I felt were not right for my article, however you can’t fight an editor.

This site then went to revenue sharing as payment for writers and I guess for some it was working well. I just learned that they are changing again and have sold hundreds of articles that have been published into paperback books and are being sold on Amazon as a how to series.

All I can say is that when I wrote the articles for them I knowingly sold all my rights along with them.

I’m sure it would give me a twinge to see my work in print and not even get a by-line on it, but that’s what happens sometimes. The lesson here is be sure you know what you’re selling with your articles, and if you do sell all your rights, just walk away and don’t look back.

You’ve Got To Be Kidding Me

So, this morning I was looking through ads for freelance writers. I came upon a site that had clients who needed up to 50 articles and up to 350-500 words each. This is one of those bidding sites, which I really don’t care for.

Anyway, as I got deeper into each offer they all seem to say on the first page that their budget was between $30 - $250. Then as you go to another page where more information is given you see that they want to pay you a set price of $1.00 or $1.50 per article for 500 words. Not only that, but they also want the articles well researched and perfectly written.

Why don’t they just save themselves the dollar and break into my house and force me to write the article at gun point? Or better yet, they could force me to pay them a dollar and write the article for them too.

There are times when I’m desperate for money, but not that desperate, not yet anyway.

Question For Potential Employers

Why is it that you place an ad, weed through hundreds of applications, pull mine from the massive pile, send me an e-mail saying that you like my work and want to hire me, and after I immediately respond saying I’d love to work for you, you disappear and never get back to me?

This has happened more than once and although I should probably have written back a second time, I wonder what happened. Did your project fall through? Did I just get lost among all the other writers you hired, or did you have second thoughts? I could understand all of these things, but I would appreciate being updated so I don’t turn down other work because I think I have work with you. It’s just professional courtesy. There is a real person behind this site after all. Thank you.

Writing Gigs and Jobs

I’ve noticed these days there are more and more sites opening up as networks for blogs. The deal usually is that if you are accepted you post on your niche blog and the more page views you make the more money you’ll make. These sites always existed but now are becoming more prevalent.

I have been writing for one network site for a couple of years so they are more established and I do see a very small but growing income every month. I also suspect that the amount I make would be higher if I would write more often. I do tend to slack on this site. The point is to know writing and site trends and get in early when possible. Although there are always writing jobs, they are not always the same type of writing that is your specialty. Keep your eyes peeled for new trends and you may end up with what fits you best.

I was scanning ads this morning and came across one that said “Writer needed, will be payed great”. You probably want to skip ads titled this way. If they can’t spell a simple word like paid, then maybe you should do more checking before you sign any contracts or send any work to them. At the same time, don’t completely dismiss them as stupid. They may be foreign and are not that good with English. Personally I would think they would set up and use a spellchecker, but that’s just me.

Scam Site Alert

I have writen articles before for someone and have not been paid. I now have become more aware of looking out for sites like this and would like to give all of you a possible heads up when I hear of something. A popular writers forum that I go to was talking this morning about a site called “Get Paid Writing Articles“. None of the writers who wrote for them ever got paid at all. So tread with care for these people and if you do write for them and get paid, please let me know so that I can update this post. Also leave a comment if you know of or hear of any other sites that you believe are scams.
