Rare VW Beetle RSi V6 Thrashed Around The 'Ring

When it comes to unicorns from within the Volkswagen Group, the exceptionally rare Beetle RSi is unquestionably one of the most intriguing.

Built for just two years between 2001 and 2003 and restricted to 250 examples worldwide, the Beetle RSi has a 3.2-liter VR6 engine shoehorned under the hood. Delivering a total of 221 hp, the engine is mated to a six-speed manual transmission sending power to the ground through all four wheels.

Just in case the engine note wasn’t enough of a giveaway that the vehicle isn’t just an ordinary Beetle, VW designed a custom bodykit for the car, including revised front and rear fascias, new side skirts, wheel arches, and a large rear wing.

A few days ago, one of these rare Beetle’s was taken out of hibernation by its owner and brought to the famous Nurburgring.

The driver took the track quite gingerly but that’s no surprise because when new, the Beetle RSi sold for roughly $80,000 in Europe!

New Aston Martin Vantage Dreamed Up In GT8 Guise

Shortly after sharing a number of renderings of the new Aston Martin Vantage in Shooting Brake and Roadster configurations, we’ve stumbled upon these images, depicting the sports car in hardcore GT8 guise.

Aston Martin introduced the GT8 about18 months ago as one of the final iterations of the outgoing Vantage. It was more aggressive and track-focused than any other V8-powered Vantage derivative before it and will almost certainly be followed up by a successor in the future, but probably not for a good few years.

Nevertheless, these renderings from artist Aksyonov Nikita depict the new Vantage with all the aerodynamic elements of the GT8, including the fixed rear wing, menacing rear diffuser and ankle-splitting carbon fiber front fascia.

As it stands, only the entry-level Vantage has been unveiled. It is powered by an AMG-sourced 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 delivering 503 hp and 505 lb-ft of torque and mated to an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission. The new Vantage also has an impressive 50:50 weight distribution and 1,530 kg (3,373 lbs) dry weight.

Plug-In Hybrid 911 Likely To Arrive In 2023, Porsche Boss Says

A plug-in hybrid version will be likely added to the 911 range mid-way through its next generation, according to Porsche CEO Oliver Blume.

The new generation of the 911 expected to go on sale in 2019, which means that we’re going to see the first plug-in hybrid version of the Porsche sports car in around 2023 with the mid-cycle update of that generation.

“We will come with the plug-in hybrid with the next battery generation and with the next evolution step,” Blume told AutoNews. “It will be very important for the 911 to have a plug-in hybrid.”

The model isn’t greenlighted yet but the Porsche CEO said it’s “my opinion that we will go for it.” This should clear the air around the plug-in hybrid 911, because Porsche had previously indicated that the project was dropped due to excessive battery weight.

Blume also said that Porsche has prepared the platform of the next 911 to accommodate the plug-in hybrid powertrain. Waiting to launch it until the mid-life facelift will enable them to extract more power and more driving range from the batteries, targeting a pure electric driving range of 43 miles, he added.

“The potential is very good with the new generation of batteries,” Blume said.

Warning: You Might Fall Asleep Watching This Texas Highway Chase

When you think about a highway chase, you're probably imagining the suspect weaving through traffic dangerously, as police try to reel him in.

Apparently, that's not always the case. This incident occurred in Denton, Texas, where a man driving a dark sedan was being chased down by a large number of law enforcement vehicles.

The man who caught the action on camera and was also trapped in the middle of it, had this to say: "I entered the highway not realizing I was getting on in the middle of a high speed chase. I was surrounded by cops and highway patrol."

He goes on to say that he had no choice but to continue driving until the chase, which was anything but "high-speed", came to an end.

Apparently, everybody was doing around 26 mph (42 km/h), and the man in the dashcam car was wondering how come the cops were having such a hard time immobilizing the suspect's vehicle - which is a fair question.

In the end, after a brief standoff, the officers managed to take down the suspect without firing their guns, which is definitely a win.

2019 Mercedes-Benz CLS Four-Door Coupe Is Back With Straight-6 (Updated Gallery, Videos)

Even though we've all had plenty of time since yesterday to make up our minds regarding the 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLS, now we also know what makes it tick underneath.

We should begin by saying that the overall styling of the car is of course instantly recognizable thanks to its clear contours and high waistline. According to Mercedes, the third-generation CLS is supposed to reflect "the timeless aura of the first CLS", which as you know, basically invented this segment.

The all-new 2019 CLS will go on sale in the U.S. by Fall 2018, although other markets will get it starting in March.

"The new CLS is a design icon as the archetype of the four-door coupe. In line with our hot & cool design philosophy, we have reduced its DNA to an extremely puristic level while emotionally charging its beauty," says Gorden Wagener, Daimler's chief design officer.

A fresher spin on a familiar design

At the front, there's a little bit of AMG GT to it, especially if you look at the how the silhouette of the grille widens towards the base. Meanwhile, the headlights feature inward-slating flanks and follow the contour of the grille. As for the taillights, like the headlights they are LEDs and feature a crystalline appearance with a three-dimensional effect. Their shape and positioning is meant to accentuate the width of the new CLS. Still, it's no so different from the outgoing model.

Inside, you'll find the same clear and elegant lines you get on the E-Class, plus the illuminated air vents and hand-finished appearance of the seats. The wide-screen cockpit displays are available as optional extras, while the ambience lighting is individually adjustable in 64 different colors - including on the previously-mentioned air vents. A cool little touch was having the ambience lighting briefly change color whenever the temperature of the air conditioning system is changed. So, you've got red for warmer and blue for cooler.

In terms of practicality, the Mercedes-Benz CLS is now, for the very first time, a true five-seater. When even more room is required, the backrests can fold down in a 40/20/40 ratio, boosting the 520-liter (18.3 cu.ft) luggage compartment's capacity even more.

Can I borrow your tech, S-Class?

On the safety front, the new CLS borrows heavily from the facelifted S-Class. This means it's got the latest generation of driving assistance systems such as Active Brake Assist, Lane Keeping Assist, Attention Assist, Speed Limit Assist and PRE-SAFE. All are standard by the way. Optional tech includes the Driving Assistance Package featuring Active Distance Control, Active Steering Assist, Active Speed Limit Assist, Active Brake Assist with cross-traffic function, Evasive Steering Assist, Active Blind Spot Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist and PRE-SAFE Plus.

Also meant to improve safety are the multibeam LED headlights with Ultra Range high beam, where the brightness of the main beam lamps remains above the reference value of 1 lux over a distance of more than 650 meters (0.4 miles).

A completely new engine range

The all-new 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLS is available with a choice of two diesels and a petrol unit - specifically as a CLS 350d 4MATIC, CLS 400d 4MATIC and CLS 450 4MATIC, the latter (petrol) being the only option you have in the U.S.

In fact, the CLS 450 4MATIC utilizes a completely new in-line six-cylinder power unit with EQ Boost and a 48-volt on-board electric system. It puts down 370 PS (362 HP) and 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) of torque, while the EQ Boost function adds another 22 PS (21 HP) and 250 Nm (184 lb-ft). This adds up to a combined fuel consumption of 7.5 liters/100km (31.3 US mpg) and a 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) acceleration time of 4.8 seconds.

As for the diesels, we're talking about a 3.0-liter in-line six-cylinder engine, producing 340 PS (335 HP) and 700 Nm (516 lb-ft) in the CLS 400d and 286 PS (282 HP) and 600 Nm (442 lb-ft) in the CLS 350d. Both models have combined fuel consumption figures of 5.6l/100km (42 US mpg) and 0-100 km/h times of 5.0 seconds and 5.7 seconds respectively.

Furthermore, an electrified CLS 53 hybrid is rumored to debut at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show, sending a total of 429 horses to the wheels.

Mercedes will kick off CLS' launch with the Edition 1 special

Those who want their new CLS to be even more exclusive can opt for the Edition 1 launch model, which features a Copper Art interior concept with black pearl nappa leather seats, copper-colored accents and contrast top stitching (on the center console, seats, armrests, dashboard and door linings), IWC analogue clock with an exclusive dial face, gloss black vehicle key, 'Edition 1' floor mats, chrome 'Edition 1' lettering on the center console and 'Edition 1' displayed on the welcome screen.

As for its exterior styling, the Edition 1 is based on the AMG Line, which means you get LED Intelligent Light headlights as standard and 19" multi-spoke AMG alloys painted black, plus 'Edition 1' lettering on the front fenders.

930 HP Nissan GT-R Humiliated By Stock McLaren 720S... Wait, What?

Alright McLaren, you win, we give up. The things your latest supercar can do with "just" 710 HP are absurd. So far it's beaten lots of challengers, but to smoke a 930 HP GT-R? That's nuts.

In fact, the 720S is so fast, it might just be how The Hulk gets back to Earth to fight Thanos in next year's "Avengers: Infinity War" movie, after the events of "Thor: Ragnarok".

Marvell jokes aside, just a few days ago we saw the 720S defeat a 720 HP GT-R - and yes, the McLaren is lighter on its feet, but to do the same to a 930 HP example? That's simply incredible!

Also, this isn't a case of the 720S pulling ahead at the beginning, covering a 1/4 mile and then getting caught up by the Nissan at very high speeds. Nope: it smokes the GT-R from the get go and maintains its advantage for about 14 seconds before its opponent even thinks about starting to catch up.

Now the question is, if a 930 HP Nissan GT-R is no match, what will it take to outrun a 720S? Something with 1,000 or 1,200 HP? We have a feeling we might soon find out.

Facelifted VW Golf GTI TCR 345HP Racer Ready For The 2018 Season

The Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR paid a visit to the plastic surgeon, where it received a new front end that resembles that of the facelifted road-legal model.

Presented at the 2017 Essen Motor Show in Germany, where it will be on display until December 10, the racer is ready for the 2018 season., with improved downforce and cooling, and less drag.

Mechanically, the 2019 Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR remains unchanged. This means that beneath that 40cm (16in) wider body than the production model lies the Group's MQB platform, and a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine that's shared with the Golf R.

The unit makes 350PS (345hp) and 420Nm (310lb-ft) of torque, and allows this track-only Golf GTI to sprint from rest to 100km/h (62mph) in 5.2 seconds.

Expected to carry a price tag of €90,000, which equals to $106,852 at today's exchange rates, the updated racer wants to continue the success of its predecessor, which won the TCR Class in the VLN Endurance Championship on the Nurburgring Nordschleife, and proved itself several times in the TCR International Series.

"The new look for the Golf GTI TCR resulted from close cooperation with Volkswagen Design. This helps us to underline just what a close relationship exists between the production model and the racing version", said VW's Motorsport Director, Sven Smeets. "For example, the engine comes directly from series production, and only requires minimal adjustment for competitive racing. This is proof that the Golf GTI provides the perfect foundation for our customer racing cars."

Latest Grand Tour Promo Features An Extremely Lucky James May

Make that almost lucky, because all the planned mayhem in this video does catch up to him in the end, in a very Looney Tunes type of way.

The Grand Tour continues its tour of teasers on the internet ahead of the show's season 2 premiere on December 8th, and this time, they went out of their way to show just how resilient (and lucky) James May, aka Captain Slow is.

Not only does he look impervious to tiles and even anvils falling off a building, he also lucks out by not accidentally drinking paint stripper and by not getting smashed into by a train while driving a Fiat Panda.

Speaking of which, we're not sure if the producers of the show got another car specifically for this commercial, or if that's actually James' car. What we do know is that back in 2014, May wrote a column saying that his Panda was on its way out, soon to be replaced by a BMW i3.

Either way, the car is featured heavily in this video, and you might even feel sorry for it at the end. As for the only non-ailing Grand Tour presenter, maybe he should think about starring in a Die Hard reboot.

Ford Sues John Cena For Selling His 2017 GT Supercar For Profit

WWE superstar and actor John Cena is facing the wrath of Ford, after selling his $500,000 2017 GT supercar before his contract allowed it to.

A copy of the lawsuit, posted on WXYZ, explains that the 40-year old man was supposed to hold on to the exotic machine made in Michigan for two years, but he ended up selling it shortly after taking delivery, and for a huge profit too.

"After being selected from thousands of applicants for the opportunity to purchase the Ford GT, Mr. Cena flipped his vehicle shortly after taking delivery of it, despite his agreement with Ford to maintain ownership of the vehicle for 24 months", is written in the nature of the action of the lawsuit.

"Upon information and belief, Mr. Cena has unfairly made a large profit from the unauthorized resale flip of the vehicle, and Ford has suffered additional damages and losses, including, but not limited to, loss of brand value, ambassador activity, and goodwill due to the improper sale."

Cena is charged with Breach of Contract, Fraud, Silent Fraud, Innocent Misrepresentation, and Unjust Enrichment by Ford, which are willing to close an eye on the illegal transaction if the professional wrestler hands them over the profits from selling the GT, in addition to other expenses.

To his excuse, John Cena admitted of selling the Ford GT, along with other property, to pay some bills, admitting that "I completely understand and as stated am willing to work with Ford to make it right. My sincerest apologies."

All-New 2019 Audi A6 Spotted With Production Lights - No, Not Those...

The winter test season is here and our spies caught the 2019 Audi A6 wearing its final production lights.

However, don't get your hopes up because these don't include the set of projectors mounted on the roof. Compared to the already introduced A7, the new Audi A6’s LED headlights appear to adopt a diffent, more basic style while the rear ones look predictably similar.

Also, and despite the camouflage tape hiding it, the rear end is expected to feature an LED stripe between the taillights, similar to those found in the A8 and of course the A7.

The combination of the slimmer headlights with the wider grille makes the new A6 look wider and lower than the current generation, spicing up a little bit the evolved but familiar lines.

Audi’s latest tech features will be present, including the 48-volt electrical architecture, safety systems and semi-autonomous capability. By the time it arrives at dealerships, the new Audi A6 is expected to offer more advanced tech than its main rivals, which includes the Mercedes E-Class and the BMW 5-Series.

Traditionally Audi will offer the new A6 in both sedan and Avant bodystyles, while the popular Allroad version is expected to join the range a few months after its market launch. Expect to see the new Audi A6 making its first appearance in 2018.

Tesla’s Quality Woes Affect More Than 90 Percent Of Their Cars

Nine current and former Tesla employees revealed that the vast majority of Tesla’s Model S and Model X vehicles require fixes after leaving the assembly line.

Citing Tesla’s internal tracking system, the same people said to Reuters that quality checks routinely revealed defects in more than 90 percent of Model S and Model X vehicles inspected following assembly.

Tesla responded to the report by saying that their “quality control process is unusually rigorous, designed to flag and correct the tiniest imperfections” but denied to provide any post-assembly defect rates.

Sorting the quality before initial assembly is crucial for automakers, because repairs don’t only cost money but time as well. In comparison, less than 10 percent of the cars Toyota makes have to undergo post-manufacturing fixes.

A former Tesla supervisor said that “so much goes into rework after the car is done ... that’s where their money is being spent”. Tesla claims that most of their post-manufacturing defects are minor and resolved in minutes.

These issues are normal with any new car but the persistent defects with the established Model S and Model X paint the picture of a company “still struggling to master basic manufacturing”, the workers said.

Cars requiring fixing are known as “kickbacks” within Tesla and their issue ranges from minor things like dents and scratches to more complicated like malfunctioning seats. Defects included “doors not closing, material trim, missing parts, all kinds of stuff. Loose objects, water leaks, you name it,” another former supervisor said. “We’ve been building a Model S since 2012. How do we still have water leaks?”

The most serious cases however are headed to one of Tesla’s outdoor parking lots to await repair. The workers said that the backlog on the lots, known internally as the “yard”, has exceeded 2,000 vehicles at times. When asked about it, Tesla denied that such “repair lots” exist.

2019 Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 Prototype Not Done Stretching Its Wings

Aimed at the likes of BMW's X5 M or Porsche's Cayenne Turbo and Turbo S, the all-new Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 definitely has some big shoes to fill.

Part of its training regimen is of course the Nurburgring, which is THE place to calibrate your car while in prototype phase, even if we're talking about a mid-size SUV like the GLE.

So what does this latest batch of images tell us? Even though the car is just as well camouflaged as before, we can still observe certain styling details like the GLE 63's Panamericana grille or its wider than usual fenders.

Also, while these images don't provide us with a look inside, we've already seen the next-gen GLE's partially covered cabin, and the AMG model should feature the same dual-screen setup, console handles and quad-vents in the middle of the dashboard. Expect the boys from Affalterbach to add their own touch though, meaning a sportier steering wheel and inserts, perhaps even some Alcantara and carbon fiber here and there.

Like the current model, the all-new GLE 63 will also be available with two different power outputs, specifically 571 PS (563 HP) for the "entry-level" version, and 612 PS (603 HP) for the GLE 63 S - both via a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8. And yes, you're looking at a larger power gap than before.

Since the all-new 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLE will be unveiled sometime next year, the AMG models should follow soon after.

Ford Performance Parts Launched In Europe For ST, RS And Mustang

Coinciding with the start of the 2017 Essen Motor Show, Ford has presented various parts that enhance the look, sound, and driving attributes of their performance models.

Developed together with specialists such as Borla, KW, Remus, and Roush, they're available to order across Europe from December 1 for the Focus ST, RS, and Mustang models.

Adjustable coilover strut and shock absorbers, with up to 40mm (1.57in) reduction in ride height are part of the offerings, along with light alloy wheels that offer up to 15 percent in weight reduction, and high-grade stainless steel exhaust systems in road-legal and track-only versions.

The entire Ford Performance range can also be equipped with a special gearshift knob selection, with carbon fiber and unique short-shift gear linkage for the Mustang six-speed manual, which is said to reduce gearshift travel by 20 percent.

Offered in three stages for the Mustang's 5.0-liter V8 engine are the Performance Calibration Power Packs, capable of boosting the unit's rev limit to up to 7,500rpm. The powertrain can also be fitted with a supercharger kit, from Roush Performance, which is compatible with both six-speed manual and automatic gearboxes, and boosts power to over 600PS (592hp).

Presented for the first time in Europe is the Ford Performance Drift Stick Concept. Developed and designed for the Focus RS, and approved by Ken Block, this is a rally-inspired electronic handbrake, which uses the car's Drift Mode to deliver clutch-free drift turns, similar to those of a real rally car.

Rimac Teases Second Electric Hypercar Ahead Of Geneva Debut

Rimac Automobili dropped the first teaser of its next hypercar, confirming at the same time a debut at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show.

The dark image outlines the silhouette and the proportions of the new electric hypercar, which appears to adopt a more aggressive styling approach, compared to the Concept One.

Internally codenamed “Concept Two”, the new electric hypercar will not only be more powerful and faster than the original $1 million Rimac, but also more expensive too.

The company posted the teaser image on its social media with the caption "Soon to be revealed: The all-new Rimac hypercar, a true game changer. Premieres at Geneva 2018. Stay tuned."

The Rimac Concept One was produced in just eight examples, plus two track-only Concept S models. Combined power of its four electric motors is rated at 1224hp and 1180lb-ft of torque. 0-62mph requires 2.5 seconds.

Unlike the Concept One, Rimac wants to build more examples of the next hypercar, targeting a production run of 100 cars and expecting to sell the first 20 in its first year.

Real Madrid players won’t be the only footballers cruising around in new Audis for the next 12 months, as rivals FC Barcelona have received exactly the same perk thanks to the German automaker’s sponsorship deal with the team.

Just like the stars of Real Madrid, those from FC Barcelona were allowed to choose a car from Audi’s expansive fleet of vehicles. Unsurprisingly, no less than 11 of the 25 players have opted for the Audi Q7, a couple of which selected the Q7 e-Tron Quattro while Andres Iniesta went for the SQ7 TDI.

Three of the squad’s stars, Gerard Pique, Luis Suarez, and Lionel Messi will be driving around in Audi RS6 Avant Performance models throughout 2018. Joining the Audi Sport family at FC Barcelona are five RS3 Sportbacks, a R8 V10 Plus Coupe, and a R8 V10 Spyder.

In a scene strikingly similar to the handover event for Real Madrid, FC Barcelona players were also exposed to the carmaker’s motorsport prowess. While those from Real Madrid jumped into a Formula E simulator, their cross-country rivals went for passenger laps in the Audi R8 LMS and Audi RS3 LMS.

Arcimotor Unveils SRX Fun Utility Vehicle In California

What you’re looking at is apparently the world’s first ‘Fun Utility Vehicle’ (FUV), dubbed the Arcimotor SRK and revealed at the LA Auto Show.

As you can see, the SRX is half motorcycle and half car. It consists of two seats, traditional motorcycle controls, two wheels at the front, and one wheel at the rear. The SRX is also fully-electric.

According to the company, founded a decade ago, the SRX features a dual electric motor system that accelerates the trike to 60 mph (96 km/h) in 7.5 seconds and through to an 80-mph (128 km/h) top speed. The base model will travel roughly 70 miles (112 km) on a single charge while the extended range option bumps that up to 130 miles (209 km).

The base price for the SRX starts at $11,900 and deliveries have just commenced.

Speaking about the completed FUV, Arcimotor founder and president Mark Frohnmayer said it was the culmination of 10 years of work.

“I am insanely stoked today to accept the keys to our first-ever Arcimoto FUV production unit. To do so on the eve of one of the world’s most prestigious auto shows where we can share the fruits of our labors with so many forward-looking vehicle enthusiasts is a truly powerful moment for our company and our industry.”

Opel Grandland X Gets New Diesel Engine With 8-Speed Auto, "Ultimate" Trim

Opel have expanded the Grandland X family by launching a new diesel version and a novel, range-topping trim.

The engine is a 2.0-liter unit, which is mated to a new 8-speed automatic transmission and puts out 177PS (175hp) and 400Nm (295lb-ft) of torque. According to Opel, this version of the Grandland X will sprint to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 9.1 seconds and top out at 214 km/h (133 mph), while turning out an average fuel consumption of less than 5 lt/100 km (56 UK mpg / 47 US mpg).

Pricing for the Grandland X equipped with the new oil burner and automatic gearbox starts from €37,320 ($44,227) in Germany, tax included.

Setting the Opel Grandland X Ultimate apart from the rest of the models are 19-inch alloy wheels, silver roof rails and diamond black roof and side mirrors on the outside, while in the cabin there are new seats, leather trim, a Denon premium audio system, OnStar personal connectivity and service assistant and smartphone integration.

Renault Kwid EV Plugs Into The Digital Realm

Renault's head honcho Carlos Ghosn has already confirmed that the French automaker will introduce a zero-emission version of the Kwid, and here's a take on how it might look like.

Penned by Kleber Silva, it sets itself apart from the regular models by getting redesigned headlights, fog lamps and a new front bumper, in addition to the plug port that's positioned of the brand's diamond logo.

Of course, the artist should have also removed the fuel filler car, as the electric Kwid won't have an internal combustion engine. There are, however, new taillights with a clear pattern, new alloys and a special badge to the tailgate to emphasize its zero-emission status.

Τhe Kwid EV will be sold exclusively in China, where prototypes are already being tested, but if everything goes as planned, then it will be launched, at a latter date, into emerging markets such as neighboring India and Brazil.

Apart from the Kwid, Renault is also developing, together with Nissan and Mitsubishi, several zero-emission cars for Western markets as well, which will share the same platform, electric motors, and batteries between them, though each is supposed to have its own identity.

1954 Jaguar D-Type Le Mans Racer Is Expected To Fetch More Than $12 Million

Major collector-car auctions take place around the world and throughout the year. Scottsdale is surely one of (if not the) highlight of the year, though – and this car is bound to be the toast of next year's events.

This Jaguar D-Type was the lead car in the British automaker's effort at Le Mans in 1954, driven by the legendary Sir Stirling Moss.

Unfortunately, it didn't make it to the finish line, retiring in the middle of the night with brake trouble - but before it did, it set a new record when it reached 172.97 miles per hour down the Mulsanne Straight.

Pictured here by Patrick Ernzen for RM Sotheby's, OKV 2 went on to compete in numerous other events, but arguably even more important was the role it played in developing Jaguar's future Le Mans winners. For the next three years, subsequent D-Types would go on to complete a hat-trick of victories in the famous endurance race, cementing Jaguar's place in the history of motor racing.

With so much history behind it, RM Sotheby's projects this D-Type will sell for more than $12 million when the gavel drops at the Arizona Biltmore on January 18-19. And the auction house should know, having sold another of its kind just last year for over $20 million.

The Next Toyota Supra Might Not Even Be Called 'Supra'

We know that a next-generation Toyota Supra is edging closer to becoming a reality but according to the Japanese automaker, the sports car may not even be dubbed the ‘Supra’.

While at the LA Auto Show, group vice president and general manager of Toyota, Jack Hollis, revealed that the Supra name isn’t set in stone for the new vehicle.

“Yes, we have other ideas, and yes, the Supra name is in consideration.

“I think that there is some discussion because the heritage of Supra is so strong. The name decision will not be made until next year as well. There are some other candidates for some other reasons that are really pretty strong,” Hollis revealed to Auto Guide.

Hollis’s statements perhaps indicate that Toyota has some trepidations about using the Supra name for its new sports car, just in case it fails to live up to its predecessor.

Nevertheless, Hollis did say that the Supra name is a “leading candidate” and reiterated what we already suspected, the release date of the new sports car remains undetermined.

According to Hollis, Toyota has yet to even settle on a two-to-three-month window to unveil the car but did confirm that more information about the vehicle will be released in 2018.

Half Of Porsche Sales To Be From Plug-Ins By 2025

More than half of all Porsche sales will be from plug-ins by the time 2025 rolls around.

According to Porsche North America president and chief executive Klaus Zellner, demand for the company’s six plug-in hybrid models will result in a dramatic expansion of its EV portfolio.

Speaking to Green Car Reports, Zellner said half of Porsches sold in 2025 will either be plug-in hybrids or all-electric vehicles. Of those, approximately 70 to 75 per cent will be plug-in hybrids but further down the road, “battery-electric vehicles will take over,” he said.

A key component of Porsche’s EV future will be the Mission E, its first all-electric vehicle. Zellner has revealed that the sedan will be offered in two configurations, one of which will feature fast-charging that can recharge the battery to 80 per cent of its capacity in just 20 minutes.

Making such rapid charging possible will be powerful charging stations, set to be initially introduced to all of the company’s 189 dealerships in the United States before the Mission E arrives.

Additionally, the VW Group is embarking on a $2 billion project to build charging infrastructure across the United States. Porsche will also take a leaf out of Tesla’s playbook by introducing destination chargers at hotels, restaurants, and other locations throughout the United States.

VW Wants To Build EVs In The U.S.

Volkswagen says it wants to build some of its future all-electric vehicles in North America.

During discussions with members of the media at the LA Auto Show, the German automaker said that it would like to build the production-spec I.D. Crozz in the U.S., as well as a fleet of future derivatives.

“The idea from the beginning is to have a high utilization of manufacturing, (making sure) one plant is fully loaded before you go on to additional capacity somewhere else,” said Volkswagen North American Region & Volkswagen Group of America chief executive Hinrich Woebcken.

“Of course we also are looking into this most likely option of industrialization in the United States. (But) nothing has been finally decided yet.”

VW will initially start constructing its I.D. range of models in Germany with the entry-level hatchback model in 2019. A number of other vehicles that also use the brand’s MEB platform will be built in the brand’s home country.

Speaking about the possibility of constructing certain MEB-based models in North America, executive vice president and chief engineering officer for the North American region, Matthias Erb, said a decision has yet to be finalized.

“We (in) the North American region are fighting to get production here. Obviously, there would be more potential in terms of delivery times from the factory and so on. I think we can make it happen,” Erb said.

While the company’s Chattanooga factory is the most likely candidate, it is possible that the facility in Puebla, Mexico could be tasked with building the I.D. Crozz and other models.

BMW's Huge X7 iPerformance Concept Arrives In LA

Alongside the BMW i Vision Dynamics Concept at BMW’s LA Auto Show booth sits this, the X7 iPerformance, unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

As the name implies, the concept has been created as a preview for the impending X7 and bring with it an eye-catching design radically different than any current production SUV built by the automaker.

The front is unquestionably the most talked-about aspect of the vehicle. BMW designers have fitted a truly ghastly chrome kidney grille which may actually make you feel sick in the stomach. The huge grille has divided opinion among those to see the concept in person and we can’t help but think it needs to be refined for the production model.

Looking beyond the questionable grille, the rest of the X7 iPerformance’s exterior design is quite appealing. It includes slim headlights, big wheels, thin A-, B-, and C-pillars, and a seductive rear-end with narrow LED taillights.

While we don’t know how similar the road-going X7 will look to the concept, we understand that the SUV will be sold with at least three different engines, including a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 with roughly 445 hp.

Nissan Prepares For Star Wars: The Last Jedi At LA Auto Show

As Star Wars: The Last Jedi inches closer to its release date, Nissan has gone stir crazy in promoting the film, creating seven bold concept cars for the LA Auto Show.

Nissan first joined forces with Lucasfilm, the production company behind Star Wars, for the release of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, some 14 months ago. That film went on to gross in excess of $1 billion at the box office and there are high hopes that the latest film will be able to exceed the magical $1 billion mark too.

With this in mind, Nissan decided to create The Last Jedi-themed versions of the Rogue, Rogue Sport, Altima, Maxima, and Titan. Before you ask, no, the creations won’t be offered for sale.

2018 Nissan Altima – Special Forces TIE Fighter

First up is a heavily-modified Altima inspired by the First Order’s elite Special Forces pilots. Compared to a typical Altima, the sedan stands out thanks to a matte black and red wrap, custom wheels, a windshield inspired by the Special Forces TIE Fighter, and large speakers at each corner, designed to mimic the sounds of the TIE Fighter.

2018 Nissan Maxima – Kylo Ren

The first of three concepts based around the Maxima, the car has been inspired by Kylo Ren and therefore mimics the look of his mask with black and silver accents on the front fascia. Elsewhere, the car includes red headlights, underbody lighting, and modified body panels.

2018 Nissan Maxima – Kylo Ren’s TIE Silencer

The second Maxima-based concept is also inspired by Kylo Ren, more specifically his TIE Silencer. The car has been equipped with distinctive wings, red lighting on the front grille, headlights, and fog lights. The car also produces all the characteristic sound effects of Kylo Ren’s TIE Silencer.

2018 Nissan Maxima – Captain Phasma

Last but not least for the Maxima concepts is the Captain Phasma variant. Baring a striking resemblance to the popular female character in the film, the car features silver armor across its exterior, made from aluminum. Additionally, there are red and black elements in the paint scheme.

2018 Nissan Rogue – Poe Dameron’s X-wing with BB-8

What we have hear is possibly the craziest concept of all. The SUV has been equipped with expansive wings on either side, as well as quad laser cannons, and illuminating thrusters. On the roof you’ll find a BB-8 astromech droid with functioning lights, motion, and sound.

2018 Nissan Rogue Sport – A-wing

Another interesting concept is the Rogue Sport A-wing. Designed to resemble the A-wing, the SUV includes faux thrusters at the rear and a set of prominent fins on the roof. Additionally, Nissan has fitted a set of blue wheels and laser cannons.

2018 Nissan Titan AT-M6

In a bid to best replicate the huge AT-M6, Nissan has used the Titan as a base, transforming the large pickup truck with a cannon in the tray and a custom body wrap. Furthermore, the pickup benefits from a 1-foot lift kit and a comprehensive sound system that includes an 18-inch subwoofer and delivers 5,000 watts of power.

Camaro Moves Closer To Aussie Launch With Trademark Application

It seems increasingly likely that the Chevrolet Camaro will be sold in Australia, following confirmation that General Motors has filed to trademark the Camaro name in the country.

As discovered by Car Advice, GM’s trademark application covers all basis, from protecting the Camaro name for use on stationery through to clothing, footwear, advertising, and most importantly, for the use of the name on vehicles.

While it is not uncommon for car manufacturers to trademark model names simply to protect them from other companies, the extent to which GM has ensured it holds the rights to the Camaro name indicates that it is serious about launching the pony car Down Under.

In early October, reports surfaced indicating that Holden had been spurred on by the local success of the Ford Mustang and wanted a slice of the pie. Consequently, it is thought that the Camaro will be shipped to Australia and converted to right-hand drive by HSV, Holden’s high-performance sub-brand.

While this is sure to thrill local Camaro fans, it will come at a cost. In fact, the Camaro SS could cost as much as $90,000 AUD, over $30,000 more than a Ford Mustang GT.
