Many people try again and again to kick the habit, but find themselves backsliding and picking up a pack of cigarettes again. The following tips should help you finally quit smoking for good.

Start a fitness program to help you stay motivated to quit smoking. If you've been putting off getting physically fit, there is no better time to do it than when you're trying to quit smoking. You can even start out small by just doing some walking each day. It's easier to remain smoke-free when you're getting fresh air and feeling good after working out.

Give herbal supplements a chance to aid in smoking cessation, but do not rely on them alone. They are not regulated by the FDA, so there is often a lack of accountability on the part of the manufacturer. However, anything is worth a try, if only as a backup plan in case you are finding it more difficult than you imagined it would be to stop smoking.

Create a list of reasons why you want to quit smoking, and read it every day. There are probably many reasons why you would like to quit ranging from the health risks, the unattractive smell, and the cost of cigarettes. Reading your list of reasons can help keep you on track when you get urges. Compile your own list, carry it with you, and read it every day as often as you need to.

It is okay to use a nicotine replacement during the beginning stage of your smoking cessation program. Nicotine is highly addictive, and the withdrawal symptoms can be extremely unpleasant. Nicotine gum or lozenges can prevent you from feeling short-tempered, moody and irritable and can be the difference between success and failure.

Receiving support from friends and family members can go a long way in helping you to quit smoking. It's especially important to remind them that getting over an addiction can cause mood swings and irritability. If people close to you are understanding of the situation, it will make relapsing that much easier to avoid.

It can be easier to quit smoking if you are able to articulate exactly why you want to quit. Try writing down a list of all of the reasons that you should quit smoking. This can include the benefits you will experience, people in your life, or any reasons at all that are important to you.

If you are trying to quit smoking, it is vital that you have a goal in mind. You will only be successful if you have proper motivation to quit. There will be times when it is very difficult to resist the temptation to smoke. Remembering the reason you wanted to quit in the first place can carry you through those tough times.

Brush your teeth after meals! The craving for a smoke after eating is one of the hardest ones to give up for many people. Carry a travel toothbrush and toothpaste with you everywhere. If you immediately go brush your teeth after a meal, you will be less likely to have a cigarette. Make sure it is a minty toothpaste so that you will not want to cover that fresh taste with a smoke.

Once you quit smoking, have regular celebrations. After you go two weeks without smoking, treat yourself to a movie. Once you go a month, eat at a fancy restaurant. Once you go six months, purchase some item that you've been wanting. Once you go an entire year without smoking, have a party for yourself. Invite all your friends and family to celebrate this milestone. These little celebrations can assist you in kicking this bad habit to the curb so that you can enjoy a healthier life.

Try replacement therapy to quit smoking. Pick an activity as simple as chewing gum, drinking tea, or eating a piece of candy. Every time you get a craving, or at times when you would normally go out and have a smoke, take part in your new activity instead. If you keep it up long enough, you could replace the pattern in your head.

The Best Way To Quit Smoking

The best way to quit smoking if you are able to is to quit cold turkey. While that can be somewhat difficult, it is possible, and you can do it. It takes dedication, willpower, and determination. You must decide for yourself that it is the best thing for you. It is not easy, and it is harder to quit cold turkey. However, if you are able to, its the best way to quit.

As any smoker knows, trying to quit can be a very frustrating experience. The advice and information you have read in this article should have given you some tools you can use to reduce this frustration and make some real progress towards quitting smoking. Make use of these tips to give up this habit for good.

Allergy Tips That Can Get You Some Relief

Allergies can come in a wide variety of forms. Some allergies are deadly, while others are a mere inconvenience. No matter what kind of allergies you suffer from, there is a lot to be said about properly informing yourself. By reading this article you will be ready to face an allergy attack.

Use high-quality, anti-allergen filters in your home heating and cooling system. These filters, which are usually pleated to maximize surface area, remove even the smallest particles of pollen, dander, and other irritants from the air. Because these filters clog more easily than standard filters, you must remember to change them more frequently.

Mold is a common cause of allergies. Mold can be found in hidden and unexpected places. To avoid exposure to mold, you should regularly use bleach to clean furnace filters and refrigerator drip pans. You should make sure that your clothes are thoroughly dried. You should also be using a dehumidifier in your upper floors and basements, in order to help eliminate common mold issues.

Check that the paper tissues you are using are unscented. Many paper tissue manufacturers are now scenting their products with strong chemicals. These chemicals can be very irritating. Many allergy sufferers are constantly using paper tissues to wipe their runny noses. However, these sufferers are unaware of the fact that if they are using scented paper tissues, they could be aggravating their nose further.

More at Allergies: Disease in Disguise : How to Heal Your Allergic Condition Permanently and Naturally

It may be tempting to take a few more allergy pills when you feel your symptoms getting worse over the course of the day. You should only take the medication as you have been directed to. Taking too much will not necessarily make things better, and it can cause other problems.

Avoid the allergens that trigger reactions. That may seem obvious, but a lot of people think they can just "tough it out". The truth is, the more you exposure yourself to allergens, the weaker your immune system becomes. Make a conscious effort to avoid things that you know you are allergic to.

Buy an air purifier for your home. These come equipped with HEPA filters that will remove allergens from the air before they ever reach your nose. They will eliminate pet dander or other irritants from the air. You will need to consider the size of the room before you buy one.

One way to keep allergies under control is to be cautious with the type of deodorant or antiperspirant that you use. This is important because depending on the chemicals that are contained in these products, you may end up with a rash or other condition indicative of an allergic reaction.

When traveling in a car, use the air conditioning, and keep the windows closed. This will help seal the allergens out of your car if you need to travel during allergy season. Make sure you set your air conditioner on its recirculate setting, so that you are not bringing in outside air. Aim the vents so they do not blow into your face.

Change your bedding frequently, and wash using hot water. Pollen, dust, and other allergens can stick to your clothing and hair and can get deposited on your bedding. Sheets and pillowcases may appear clean, but can harbor irritants that will affect you while you sleep. These allergens easily wash away when the items are cleaned in hot water.

Mask yourself from allergens. You might think you look silly, but think about using an air mask if you must be outdoors during times of high pollen count. Wear sunglasses and hats to make sure pollen stays away from your hair and eyes. By creating a barrier between you and the pollen, your allergies are likely to be easier to deal with.

Think about your current diet and consider practicing a healthier eating lifestyle. You are what you eat and sometimes, eating a lot of unhealthy foods can make you congested. Put some more veggies and white meats into your diet, this can help clear up your bloodstream, helping your body to combat congestion and allergies.

One way to keep allergies under control is to make sure that any plants around your home are not causing more problems than good. You will want to do this because sometimes mold can grow on plants and introduce these spores to your home's air. Be sure to not let any water sit in the plant's soil, it should drain properly.

If you have food or insect allergies, then you should carry your epinephrine auto injector with you at all times. You do not want to be somewhere and have a reaction and not have it with you. You should always have one on your person, regardless of where you are going.

Perhaps you don't actually suffer from allergy attacks, but you have a loved one who does. By knowing about what they are going through, you can help them to get through these annoying times. Read through this and other similar articles in order to learn all you can about allergy attacks.

not know it. The other children at Brian's school make fun of him
because he makes many mistakes when reading aloud and while writing on
the board. He thinks of himself as being dumb. His parents believe
that he is just lazy. It turns out that caring teacher recognizes that
he is neither.

The teacher recognizes the symptoms of dyslexia and
sets out to get Brian the help he needs. Brian is embarrassed that he
needs the extra help in school. After Brian's teacher begins to
explain dyslexia more to him, he begins to understand that he needs the
extra help not because he is dumb, but because his brain learns
differently. The story offers hope; Brian is really smart he just
learns differently. I strongly recommend this as a book to be shared
by parents and their children
readers. It is great to share with students who have been diagnosed
with the reading disability as well as those who have heard of it. The
character is reminded how her father struggled with dyslexia as a young
boy and now is a smart, successful adult. She also realizes that a boy
in her class seems to have the sames struggles as her father.

She
understands and empathizes with not her father but the boy in class and
will look at him differently. It also presents famous people who have
gone one is be succesful in their adulthood despite having dyslexia.

The
other books in Esham's series titled The Adventures in Everyday
Geniuses are a great resource to teacher and parents needing stories to
share with children that show despite obstacles in learning to not give
up!

Like one of the other reviewers of this series of books, I found that my
dyslexic daughter was not particularly interested in my telling her
stories about "famous dyslexics" or in having any kind of dialogue about
the issue (she's 8 yrs old). However, she absolutely LOVED these
books. They are non-threatening, not too "teachy", and the
illustrations are wonderful. My daughter has enjoyed the entire series,
but after reading this book in particular, she decided she wanted to go
to the library (like the main character)and do some research on
dyslexia. This is a huge step! types of dyslexia

This is the only book in the
series that specifically mentions a term - dyslexia. The other books
deal more in generalities--trouble with timed math facts and
memorization, poor handwriting and attention deficit. However, I think
many children will see themselves in at least one of these stories, and a
child like mine may see parts of herself (or himself) in every book. I
like the fact that the books are non-specific. They don't spend word
space on labels and diagnoses and symptomology. They simply discuss the
challenges a child faces in the classroom from a child's point of view.
And THAT is what makes them so accessible and wonderful for our kids.
I highly, highly recommend this entire series of books for any child
with learning differences.
This ground-breaking book argues that spelling and writing need to be
given more consideration in teaching and remedial settings especially
if dyslexic pupils are to be helped back up to grade level, and other
pupils are to make more effective, quicker progress. types of dyslexia

Helping teachers
and student-teachers to understand the valuable contribution spelling
and handwriting makes to literacy development in primary and secondary
schools, this book shows them how to overcome existing barriers to
learning. Chapters cover key topics such as:

the nature of spelling and the impact of the National Literacy Strategy

the strengths and weaknesses of existing schemes for handwriting

the definitions of dyslexia and how common spelling errors by dyslexics are made

making effective links between strategic assessment and strategic interventions in schools

Adam represents the creative, talented and imaginative spirit in all of us and Robb expertly describes Adam's frustration and near defeat as he learns to overcome his shortcomings with the help of his mother and tutor. Its impossible not to cheer him on as he learns to stop pretending and feeling behind and breaks the "code" to win the war against words. The confidence he gains in himself is emphasized by the colorful, life-like illustrations. This book is a must-have for anyone who knows a child struggling with dyslexia.

This story is about a young boy named Adam who has types of dyslexia. It begins when Adam is a preschooler and follows him through fourth grade, sharing his struggles with reading and writing from the child's point of view. Adam is a very smart boy who enjoys math and science but feels completely inadequate in language arts compared to his peers. Finally, Adam gets a tutor who helps him learn the basics of reading, and he slowly learns to read. Meanwhile, his confidence grows when he completes tasks science and math tasks correctly at school. When his mother gives me a book about pirates, Adam realizes that he is finally a reader.

It's impossible not to cheer for Adam in this story, as he wins "The Alphabet War" and gains confidence. Children with dyslexia- or any child who struggles in school- will be able to relate to Adam. They will see that just because they struggle with reading and writing, they are not stupid, they are capable learners! I love the metaphors the author used for Adam's feelings, and the illustrations are colorful and captivating!

The authors of this slim, highly-readable, and informative volume are themselves researchers in this field. The major point of the book is to present their own comprehensive model of the cognitive underpinnings of reading disorders. In the process, they also cover previous theories and give a broad summary of the research to date.

They should be commended for the structure of their book, which not only includes numbered section headings and summaries, but also forward references at the ends of chapters to connect the material just covered to material in later chapters. Their theoretical model and extensive research on that model appeared to me to be useful for both researchers and clinicians. For those in the field, they attempt to go beyond the phonological-processing model and the dual-deficit model (phonological processing plus speed of processing), to present an integrated model of how problems with automatizing many tasks, including motor skills, may lead to most of the problems observed in reading disability. types of dyslexia

Those who work with learning disabled children and adults will find this a lucid, comprehensive, and current update on the state of research in this complex area. Some family members or other interested non-professionals may also find it interesting or enlightening (although it is primarily aimed at professional psychologists and specialists in learning disabilities), because it is so well written.
They are books that take a child's point of view, especially if the child suffers from some physical challenge or lack self-confidence in going about everyday activities. These attractively illustrated picture storybooks encourage kids never to be afraid of a challenge. Following each story are four pages of suggested activities that relate to the book's theme. A final two-page section offers advice to parents. types of dyslexia

The child in this story knows the alphabet, but she sometimes has trouble putting all the letters together to read words. No matter how hard she tries, she often mixes up the letters or writes them backwards. She's unhappy until her teacher explains that she has dyslexia, and that she can be helped to read and write correctly.

We have used this book several times. My son has shared this with his class mates and carries it in his back pack. I think he uses it as not only a means to explain his dislexia but for him it is a way to tell people that he has a condition and is not just a stupid kid. This is his way to say I can do all the work it just takes me longer. His 2nd grade teachers also have appreciated the information. They have used it as a book read in class.
It is perfect for pre-adolescent (and perhaps younger) children who are already able to notice and comprehend their difficulties, differences, struggles and - most importantly - the stigma attached to learning disabilities.

The best part about (from a "sufferer" point fo view) is that it doesn't focus on the "clinical" aspects of dyslyxia or LD - the learning plans/IEPs, how "wonderful" and accomodating schools are nowadays under the Americans with Disabilities Act, etc. It profiles - in first person interviews - children currently fighting the battle, as well as successful adults at all levels - from businessmen, Nobel Prize winners + Erin Brockovich herself, to those who have built amazing businesses and livelihoods but who "...have read only 2 books in their entire life."

It's a no-fluff but inspirational look at not only surviving but SUCCEEDING with dyslexia, first-hand from those who have fought the battle. As a moderately successful adult who has (and still does) suffer from learning disabilities, I still cry when I watch this, as A) it brings back strong memories of the fight, and B) it reminds me I am not alone...types of dyslexia

The only "downside" for me is that it constantly links the term "dyslexia" only to learning disabilities involving words. This sort of irks me as someone who reads and writes above level but has a math-based learning disability. Nonetheless, everything you see here still applies, and I recoomend it for anyone - child, adult, parent, friend, clasmate - who wants to truly understand what we GO through - not just to understand the "medical" parts of it.

The information in this book was written and gathered by Mr. Sagmiller, an adult living with dyslexia; he is also an advocate and guest speaker for the learning disabled, MBA graduate, and author of Dyslexia My Life. I recommend this book for anyone who wants to have a better understanding of Dyslexia and for parents who are trying to find ways to advocate for their learning disabled child, so they can get the help that they need.
I found this book to be extremely informative. I recognized the characteristics of my youngest son in the well-written case histories. I, also, recognized traits of my oldest son in the text which eventually led us to a diagnosis from a professional of "auditory processing difficulties". types of dyslexia
We enrolled both our sons in the 3-week intensive course at the Melvin Smith Clinic in Sacramento last year and have been reaping the benefits of their instruction and suggestions every since
Working with students with dyslexia and dysgraphia has been quite a challenge. In the beginning I could find very little about dysgraphia so this book has been very good to read. I am not finished with it yet but look forward to reading more.

I am doing a lot of what it talks about already but always willing to try new techniques. Using different techniques with different students really helps fit their learning and goals. The book is great for both new teachers, seasoned teachers, and parents. I highly recommend the book. types of dyslexia
It is a topic that lends itself to edu-speak, psycho-babble and not a little outright crankery. That is why something as clearly written as this book is so very welcome.

Unlike the vast majority of writers who take on this topic, Robert Frank does not focus narrowly on reading, comprehension and testing; he looks at the whole person. A dyslexic himself, Frank describes how dyslexics find alternative ways to navigate basic day-to-day tasks and the ways the disability might affect a child's outlook, self-image and character. This goes well beyond merely reading and grades.

Make no mistake, this is a modest book that makes a few basic points, but as someone who is dyslexic, I found that this is one of the very few books on the subject that really spoke to me. I would particularly recommend it to parents who must figure what their children are going through.

I hope this will fall into the hands of the many teachers who think these kids are just not trying. (And I really hope it gets looked at some of the many advocates of one-size-fits-all high-stakes testing in Florida and other states, but that probably is hoping for too much.) types of dyslexia

A valuable book with many concrete, day-to-day examples and practical suggestions.
It is aimed at three audiences: (1) dyslexic people who are having difficulty at work; (2) dyslexia professionals, such as tutors and psychologists; and (3) employers, in particular HR and training managers, and occupational health professionals.

In the first section of the book the authors explain the range and nature of dyslexic difficulties, and also deal with a related set of difficulties, dyspraxia. They show how these difficulties can affect work performance and describe in detail how the difficulties can be assessed. A particular strength of the book is that much attention is given not just practical difficulties but also to the emotional problems which are related to these. The book also does full justice to the strengths which dyslexic people have.

The second section of the book gives a wealth of strategies for dealing with the difficulties, and building on strengths. There is advice on work organisation, efficient work methods, reading with recall and comprehension, writing workplace documents, techniques for improving memory, oral skills, and ways of dealing with negative emotions, such as anxiety and frustration. types of dyslexia

Particularly valuable are the sections which give advice to both the employer and employee on the sort of reasonable adjustments which can be made in the workplace to help dyslexic employees maximise their potential.

I found this book very easy to read, and extremely informative. I felt the authors really empathised with dyslexic people, and knew exactly what help they needed. They also understood exactly what employers need to know. I also liked the fact that they avoided jargon, and seem to be speaking very directly to their readers.
Firstly, research suggests that music education can benefit young dyslexics as it helps them focus on auditory and motor timing skills and highlights the rhythms of language.

Secondly, dyslexic musicians at a more advanced level face particular challenges such as sight-reading, written requirements of music examinations and extreme performance nerves.

This is a sequel to the highly successful Music and Dyslexia: Opening New Doors, published in 2001. The field of dyslexia has developed rapidly, particularly in the area of neuropsychology.

Therefore this book focuses on these research advances, and draws out the aspects of music education that benefit young dyslexics. types of dyslexia

The contributors also discuss the problems that dyslexic musicians face, and several chapters are devoted to sight-reading and specific strategies that dyslexics can use to help them sight-read.

The book offers practical techniques and strategies, to teachers and parents to help them work with young dyslexics and dyslexic musicians.
Dyslexia, the most common learning disability leads to well-documented negative effects on school and, ultimately, adult success.

Therefore, it is critical that school professionals provide early and effective assessment and intervention. Identifying, Assessing, and Treating Dyslexia at School equips practitioners with in-depth understanding of the disorder and a wealth of practical information for meeting student needs. types of dyslexia

This volume: Reviews up-to-date findings on dyslexia – causes, prevalence, and related conditions. Provides research-based tools for identifying and addressing dyslexia. Offers a detailed framework for case finding and screening, diagnostic and psychoeducational assessment as well as age- and grade-appropriate intervention. Explains the roles and responsibilities of school psychologists when it comes to identifying students with dyslexia. Focuses solely on dyslexia, unlike most other books on learning disabilities.

As the duties of school psychologists and related education professionals become more complex, recognizing and providing services for students with learning disorders has become progressively more demanding. Identifying, Assessing, and Treating Dyslexia at School offers practitioners an accessible and easy-to-read reference that they will use for years to come.
Addressing the components that need to be considered in the assessment of dyslexia—both cognitive and academic—this book includes descriptions of the various tests used in a comprehensive dyslexia assessment along with detailed, evidence-based interventions that professionals and parents can use to help individuals struggling with dyslexia.

Like all the volumes in the Essentials of Psychological Assessment series, each concise chapter features numerous callout boxes highlighting key concepts, bulleted points, and extensive illustrative material, as well as test questions that help you gauge and reinforce your grasp of the information covered.

"Essentials of Dyslexia Assessment" is, first and foremost, a textbook for teachers and literacy specialists. Its tone is sober and judicious. It avoids presenting information that is controversial or inadequately researched. The first six chapters present the accepted definitions of dyslexia, a short history, a synopsis of current scientific research, and a comprehensive look at how dyslexia affects the reading abilities of children and adults. There are plenty of charts, boxed reference points, and so on, with a summary "Test Yourself" at the end of every chapter. This section is so dense with information that it could be quite daunting unless you were using the text with the guidance of an instructor.

However, beginning with Chapter 7, the emphasis is on more practical material, and here the book, while still a textbook, also becomes valuable for parents of dyslexic children. In addition to chapters on instruction in phonological awareness, reading and spelling skills, and reading fluency, there is a valuable chapter on technological resources, another on dyslexia in different languages (including a look at ELL students with dyslexia), and a final chapter on special education law. An appendix presents summaries (organized alphabetically) of 26 remediation programs, from Barton to Wilson. There is a good glossary at the end, along with a good index. For parents and teachers alike, it will be a helpful reference. A lot of information has been packed into this book. types of dyslexia

If you're just learning about dyslexia, is this the book to begin with? No. For that I'd go to Sally Shaywitz's "Overcoming Dyslexia," which was written with parents in mind and is excellent on both the scientific and educational aspects of dyslexia. I think that "Essentials of Dyslexia Assessment" is a fine and useful resource, though, and if you have a personal or professional interest in this subject, you'll want to own it.
Our struggles as parents are often immense as we work to advocate for our dyslexic child in a society that, more often than not, discards a dyslexic intellect as inferior and unlikely to succeed in life. This wonderful book explains through example after example how the complete opposite is the case. Dyslexic minds may have troubles with conventional ways of "doing things" but it is for that reason that they have been the pivotal forces behind discoveries and innovations that have led our culture forward for centuries (if not millennia). types of dyslexia

This book is not just for parents of dyslexic children, but for anyone who is interested in in deepening their understanding of the human mind/brain and especially those who are interested in correlations between mentation and society. This is an engaging read, full of beautiful thoughts by many of the most influential minds of contemporary society. The Eides (both MDs) bring their extensive knowledge together in a book unlike any other on the market. It will change the way you look, not just at dyslexics, but at how we, as a society, are all too quick to judge those who are "different".
For years, reading was a source of frustration and inevitable tears. He struggled, I struggled, his teachers struggled. Little improvement was made for years.

Then, for 4th grade, I homeschooled him. My father bought me this book. I devoured it. I learned from it and I put it to use. THe changes were dramatic and faster than I could have ever expected. types of dyslexia

The book explains so much about the nature of dyslexia, and it gives realistic excercises to do. And they are fun to do, so even my reluctant 9 year old was enjoying himself!

Now he is in 5th grade back at his old school. And he loves to read! Loves it! He's read Tolkien. He's on book 14 of the Redwall series. He reads everyday, and every night, in the car, in bed, everywhere. I am so grateful, so very grateful for this book.

As well as helping us bring the love of reading into my son's life, it also explains some of the benefits of dyslexia. Yes, benefits! Now, my son doesn't feel stigmatized. He is learning to put the strengths he has to use, and this book will help you do the same!

A life-changing book, I recommend it for anyone with even a touch of dyslexia. You will find it empowering!
I could never understand why I scored average to low in multiple-choice tests but scored high in reading comprehension. types of dyslexia

Why I excelled in physical science and math yet was constantly taking remedial writing and English? Dr. Shaywitz's book is excellent in answering these questions.

The first step in treatment is understanding the mechanism. A miswiring of the phonologic module explains so much and suggests likely remedies. Her book is written in layman's terms and is easy to read and understand. I wish I could give a copy of this book to all my friends and family it explains so much. Dr. Shaywitz knows her audience and writes with compassion and personal touch.

The best part was learning that dyslexia can now be seen to have a physical manifestation by fMRI. Dyslexia is no longer a mysterious disability but has actual biological roots. Most disturbing to read was that in her estimates, 1 in 5 children have some form of dyslexia.

As a child that almost slipped through the cracks, I failed kindergarten because I didn't know my ABC's, this is distressing to learn. How many intelligent and potentially successful adults were allowed to fail due to dyslexia? It was only through the diligence of my mother that I ever learned to read.

Thirty years ago little was understood about "word blindness" but my mother did the primary research and tried every goofy theory on teaching including writing letters on my back with her finger and asking me to name the letter.

Now Dr. Shaywitz gives good advice as well as current research and resources so parents have it all in one book. If you had only one book on dyslexia this would be it. I can't recommend this book highly enough. I give it many more stars then I'm allowed.
Dyslexia and Vision aims to provide a straightforward summary of work in this field for teachers, educational psychologists, child psychologists, and paediatricians. types of dyslexia

The primary purpose of the book is to provide these professionals with the information they need in order to offer balanced, insightful advice for people in their care. Eyecare professionals themselves are often bewildered by the plethora of claims and anecdotes in this field. A secondary purpose of the book is to provide, in appendices, a balanced "evidence-based" review of the literature for eyecare professionals.
