U2 BASS player Adam Clayton’s lawyers are disputing how much detail he must give about his spending as part of a case over €4.8m which was allegedly taken from his bank accounts.

Mr Clayton is suing Bank of Ireland Private Banking and chartered accounting firm Gaby Smyth & Co, Merrion Road, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4, arising out of claims that his former personal assistant, Carol Hawkins, misappropriated the money over five years until November 2009.

In November last year, Mr Justice Paul Gilligan made a series of orders and directions in relation to the disclosure of documents and exchange of material between the parties in advance of the full hearing.

Accountants

Now Mr Clayton’s lawyers, and lawyers representing his former accountants, are disputing the detail of those directions.

Mr Justice Gilligan said he would clarify a ruling he made on the matter last year by listening back to the digital court recording of the hearing. He would give his decision on the matter in two weeks, he said.

Mr Clayton is seeking €4.38m damages and €4.8m damages respectively against the defendants for alleged negligence and breach of contract arising from the alleged misappropriation by Ms Hawkins of the €4.8m.

The claims are denied.

K’Naan’s second retail outing of 2012 will feature his Distant Relatives homie Nas, as well as icons from U2 and The Rolling Stones.

Rapper/singer K’Naan will release his next full-length album, Country, God Or The Girl on May 1. The A&M Records star will collaborate with emcees Nas and will.i.am on the release, along with U2′s lead singer Bono, Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards and Nelly Furtado.

In January, K’Naan released a five-song EP, More Beautiful Than Silence. The EP featured Nas and Nelly Furtado, and appeared on the Top 200 of the charts the following week.

Country, God Or The Girl follows up 2009′s full-length Troubadour.

Band will return with new album ‘Dark Light’ in April

1990s pop group East 17 have said that their new album ‘Dark Light’ has been inspired by U2 and Kings Of Leon.

The band, who are most famous for their 1994 single ‘Stay Another Day’, will put out the album on April 2 and have said it is “subconsciously inspired by American music and rock ‘n’ roll”. The album does not feature the group’s eccentric former frontman Brian Harvey.

The album’s accompanying press release says of ‘Dark Light’: “It showcases the band’s new transatlantic rock sound, reminiscent of bands like Kings Of Leon and U2 and even artists like Brian Adams and Billy Joel It’s a brave move and one that’s paid off on a record that’s as catchy as ‘Summer Of 69′ and as soft rock and big sounding as it gets.”

The band’s songwriter Tony Mortimer, who has also produced the album, said of the record: “I think everyone is subconsciously inspired by American music and rock ‘n’ roll and this time around we wanted to do something more live with less tricks.”

The album is the group’s first since 1998′s ‘Resurrection’ and will be released on FOD Records.

There were so many unforgettable moments from U2′s 360 tour but this one more than most, lives long in the memory.

It concerns U2 fan Adam Bevell and his time to truly shine came when Bono plucked from the sold out crowd of 45,000 at the U2 concert in Nashville. Adam was in the front of GA and was holding up a sign which read ‘blind guitar player – bring me up!!’ and the rest they say is history.

Adam’s story travelled all over the world almost instantly with hundreds of websites and newspapers running with his story. Even U2.com, the band’s official website thought it too good a moment to let pass and the following is from it -

But this show had one last surprise and a moment one fan will never surrender. With the band about to walk off stage, Bono started talking to someone on the front row: ‘You want to play what?’
Before you know it, this dude was up on stage, holding Bono’s Irish Falcon guitar and being introduced to Music City.
‘My wife’s name is Andrea,’ he explained. ‘I’m kinda nervous man!’
But as he started playing, the band backing him, Bono started singing, ‘All I Want Is You’ and the nerves disappeared.

‘You say you want diamonds on a ring of gold
You say you want your story to remain untold….’

A spine-tingling moment and when it was over Bono hugged him and gave him his guitar – something to pinch when he wakes up from his dream. (We caught Andrea’s husband (don’t know his name yet!) before his big moment, holding the sign in our photo above).

On Thursday, March 22, 2012, his vast career and achievements will be recognized with an induction to the Canadian Music Industry Hall of Fame. This lifetime honour will be presented to Lanois during the Canadian Music & Broadcast Industry Awards gala taking place at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel as part of Canadian Music Week’s 30th anniversary celebrations.

Daniel Lanois, along with Brian Eno co-produced U2′s album The Unforgettable Fire. Along with Eno, he also went on to produce U2′s The Joshua Tree, the 1987 Grammy Award for Album of the Year, and some of the band’s other works including Achtung Baby and All That You Can’t Leave Behind. U2 joined Dylan, The Beatles, Elvis and Hendrix on the cover of Rolling Stone, which celebrates ‘Immortals – the fifty greatest artists of all time’.

The Clash, more than any other group, kick-started a thousand garage bands across Ireland and the U.K. For U2 and other people of our generation, seeing them perform was a life-changing experience. There’s really no other way to describe it.

I can vividly remember when I first saw the Clash. It was in Dublin in October 1977. They were touring behind their first album, and they played a 1,200-capacity venue at Trinity College. Dublin had never seen anything like it. It really had a massive impact around here, and I still meet people who are in the music business today — maybe they are DJs, maybe they are in bands — because they saw that show.

U2 were a young band at the time, and it was a complete throw-down to us. It was like: Why are you in music? What the hell is music all about, anyway? The members of the Clash were not world-class musicians by any means, but the racket they made was undeniable — the pure, visceral energy and the anger and the commitment. They were raw in every sense, and they were not ashamed that they were about much more than playing with precision and making sure the guitars were in tune. This wasn’t just entertainment. It was a life-and-death thing. They made it possible for us to take our band seriously. I don’t think that we would have gone on to become the band we are if it wasn’t for that concert and that band. There it was. They showed us what you needed. And it was all about heart.

The social and political content of the songs was a huge inspiration, certainly for U2. It was the call to wake up, get wise, get angry, get political and get noisy about it. It’s interesting that the members were quite different characters. Paul Simonon had an art-school background, and Joe Strummer was the son of a diplomat. But you really sensed they were comrades in arms. They were completely in accord, railing against injustice, railing against a system they were just sick of. And they thought it had to go.

I saw them a couple of times after the Dublin show, and they always had something fresh going on. It’s a shame that they weren’t around longer. The music they made is timeless. It’s got so much fighting spirit, so much heart, that it just doesn’t age. You can still hear it in Green Day and No Doubt, Nirvana and the Pixies, certainly U2 and Audioslave. There wasn’t a minute when you sensed that they were coasting. They meant it, and you can hear it in their work.

I don’t think rock’n'roll is necessarily a young man’s game. I think Neil Young is just as rock’n'roll now as he was in his 20s. I’d like to think we can still be edgy and challenging.

I was not an obvious contender. I was actually pretty shy in school. My defence mechanism was to be the class clown. I remember getting into a lot of trouble for being disruptive, and I was brought in front of the headteacher, who said: “What’s going to happen to you; what are you going to do when you grow up?” and I said: “Well, I’m obviously going to be a comedian.”

From an early age I didn’t buy into the value systems of working hard in a nine-to-five job. I thought creativity, friendship and loyalty and pushing the boundaries of what was acceptable was much more interesting.

The longevity of U2 is primarily based on the friendship of four men that have grown up together. Four men that respect and support and love each other. We won’t let each other fail.

It’s very confusing when fame comes early on in your career. You get a little bit bent out of shape in terms of what’s important. Fame is like the dessert that comes with your achievements – it’s not an achievement in itself, but sometimes it can overpower the work.

I really enjoy the privileges of fame now. It opens doors and allows you to meet people, and you’re in control. When fame first happened I didn’t feel in control, and it closed doors to me.

I’ve never necessarily chosen to be a bachelor. I’ve had girlfriends throughout the last 20 or 30 years. It’s just that there were times when I met people that fascinated me and times I didn’t.

The biggest misconception about me was that I was some kind of wild, crazy rock’n'roll firework. It was an easy image to pick up on, but I’d like to think I was a little deeper than that.

I stopped drinking 12 years ago, and it was time. I’d had enough of drinking, drugging and nightclubs. It was a difficult decision to change my life, and it took a while to reprogram, but I’ve no regrets at all. I’ve enjoyed every bit of my life. I’ve had the best of it both ways.

My greatest achievement is managing to cope with four fingers and four strings.

The worst thing that ever happened to me was being busted. It wasn’t that I was treated particularly badly, it was just so stupid, so pathetic, to be busted for cannabis. It was a big newspaper story, and it becomes a whole talking point with your parents and your parents’ friends and your friends’ children, and you just don’t want that debate opened up.

I feel there is a lot more to achieve. In the first 20 years I was functioning on instinct and attitude and rawness, and now I know what I’m doing and can apply those skills in a different way. It’s no longer about attitude and rawness, but it’s about sophistication and understanding.

If I could only take one thing on tour it would be Irish tea bags. Barry’s decaffeinated tea bags. I know it sounds crazy, but if you don’t travel with your own tea, it never tastes the same.

In a loving relationship, as an expression of freedom and fantasy, I think sex is very important.

I don’t think I would ever try and repeat U2. I’d be very happy when U2 came to whatever end, and there is no end, really. But I would be happy to move on. It’s a very fast world, and a quieter world would be welcome at some stage.

I can look at myself in the mirror. I didn’t use to be able to do it. I see someone who is incredibly lucky, who still has so much ahead of him rather than behind him, and I’m very grateful. I cannot believe how good my life is. I did not expect this.

U2 FRONTMAN Bono is set for a major windfall as another massive technology investment pays off. Bono is a partner in Silicon Valley private equity firm Elevation Partners which owns a 22 per cent chunk of social media and review site Yelp, which announced plans for a €650m IPO last week.

All eyes will be on the Yelp flotation as it will be the first major internet company IPO on Wall Street this year.

The Yelp float — which will raise about €80m for the company — is seen as a huge barometer of tech investor sentiment ahead of the €100bn Facebook listing in coming months.

Bono, of course, has a keen interest in Facebook, thanks to Elevation’s 1.5 per cent stake. The move will also be watched closely by Facebook’s 300 Irish staff, many of whom own restricted stock units in the company.

Elevation initially invested around €19m to buy shares in Yelp in January 2010. Another €55m was committed to boosting that stake through the secondary markets as Yelp shareholders offloaded stock in the private company.

The near €75m investment in the company has almost doubled in value in just over two years, representing a spectacular return.

The Yelp and Facebook floats mark quite a turnaround in the fortunes of the sunglasses-wearing rocker.

In March 2010, a well-known US investment website, 24/7WallSt, labelled Bono the “worst investor in America” following a series of share-buying expeditions in handset maker Palm, property website Move.com and business magazine Forbes.

Fox The voices and animated images of U2 play supporting roles to Sanitation Commissioner Homer on 'The Simpsons' episode 'Trash of the Titans.'

Remember the Simpsons episode with U2 in it? The one when PopMart rolled into Springfield. Well jsonline.com have published an article that deals with the top jobs held by Homer Simpson and it starts with Homers job as sanitation commissioner for the city.

In the episode, Homer walks on stage in the middle of U2′s PopMart tour to promote his run for sanitation commissioner to the hip people of Springfield.

U2 are in the middle of Pride (In the Name of Love) when Homer gains access backstage past security by carrying a bag of potatoes over his shoulder and then meddles with the engineering controls so as his face appears on the giant television screens onstage.

U2 also sing “The Garbage Man”, a parody of the song “The Candy Man” from the children’s film Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory in it.

Steve Martin guest stars also as Ray Patterson, the incumbent commissioner.

The plot centers on Homer having a tiff with the refuse collectors and decides to run for sanitation commissioner himself. He makes so many promises about how he’ll improve the sanitation department and as a result wins the election but then blows the Sanitation Department’s yearly budget of $4.6 million in only a month. Then he comes up with a plan to solve the budget crisis and pay the workers for their services, by getting cities all over the United States to pay him to mash their excess garbage into the abandoned mine shaft on the outskirts of Springfield.

The producers of Broadway’s Spider-Man musical and former show director Julie Taymor have settled their legal dispute.

The producers of the show, written by U2′s Bono and The Edge, and a trade association representing Taymor had been in dispute over her firing and breach of contract claims.

Under the agreement, announced by the parties today, Taymor will receive full royalty fees for her services as a director through the show’s duration, as well as some fees toward her work as a collaborator.

Producers at 8 Legged Productions and the Stage Directors and Choreographers’ Society (SCD), which represents Broadway directors and other professionals, also agreed Taymor’s services as a collaborator on the project were completed and she has no further involvement in the show.

“The litigation between us is over, and we are hopeful that any remaining issues between the producer and Ms Taymor regarding her role as author can also be resolved to the satisfaction of all,” said Karen Azenberg, president of the SDC, in a statement today.

Tony-winning The Lion King director Taymor worked on the original book for the Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark musical, before being fired from the production in March 2011.

She filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against the Spider-Man producers last year, saying they made “unauthorized and unlawful use” of her written works.

Michael Cohl and Jeremiah J. Harris, producers of the show, filed a counter-suit against Taymor last month, accusing her of jeopardising the production of the show by “developing a dark, disjointed and hallucinogenic musical.”

Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark had a rocky start with cast injuries and opening night delays, but since then has been steadily packing in audiences on Broadway, making a record-setting $2.9 million (€2.2 million) from Christmas to New Year’s Day, according to figures from industry website The Broadway League.
