Message on Parkfest

Dear Students,

It has come to our attention that some students have voiced their disdain for the pricing of this year’s Parkfest concert. We would like to clear up all of the student’s concerns as well as prove that any disdain for the pricing is entirely unwarranted.

Every year the Student Association attempts to improve on their programming efforts on campus. As has been tradition, SA brings a Rock or Pop artist in the fall and a hip-hop/ R&B artist in the spring, and the prices of such artists has been increasing over the years. In the recent past, the concert tickets have been selling for the unsustainably low price of $10. Over the past years, the concert series have suffered due to the lack of revenue produced by having a limited on-campus concert. This past fall SA was lucky enough to have LMFAO perform at the school during the peak of their popularity only because the contract that had been signed months prior was valued at less than half of what LMFAO was charging at the actual time of the concert. In order to have quality concerts with popular, well known artists it is necessary to spend the money for such artists. That being said, the cost of bringing popular artists does not match the revenue that could be generated by the limited capacity of campus facilities and a $10 ticket. By increasing the ticket cost, SA was able to make this year’s Parkfest not only more relevant, but fiscally responsible and sustainable. Ticket prices for the concert have not traditionally been $10 dollars, in fact the prices were much higher than the current price of $20 in the early 2000s to support bringing bigger names to off-campus venues where a profit can be turned.

We believe here at the Student Association that students would like to see quality concerts, but with an ever growing student community that needs more funding by the year, the Student Activity Fee budget is spread thinner amongst everyone every year. There is only one way to keep the concert series going while still bringing quality artists and funding close to a hundred student groups (recognizing over 200), and that is for everyone to pay slightly more to see a concert. In addition, the ticket prices are still well under the price of any other ticket for a show of similar value, which makes the $20 dollar pricing very reasonable if one is not focused on past shows, but taking this one at its face value.

Coffee-House Slam with Kit Yan

An explosion of slam poetry featuring world famous Kit Yan. Kit was featured in the HBO Documentary Asians Aloud. He tells stories through slam poetry from the lens of a queer and transgender Asian American from Hawaii who travels all over the world on tour. Through touching love poems, coming out stories, and comedic tales of his childhood he provides transformational impact. Come out and support your friends and hear some life changing words from Kit Yan. March 21st, 8pm, Performing Arts Center.

Alumni Association Spirit Scholarship ($1000): Awarded to three UAlbany students who demonstrate outstanding school spirit and commitment to the University and its students.

The Agnes E. Futterer Memorial Fellowship ($750): Awarded to a UAlbany senior entering graduate study in theatre or a theatre-related field at UAlbany or any other accredited institution or recognized theatre program.

The Albert N. Husted Fellowship ($1000): Awarded to a UAlbany senior planning for a full time graduate study in any area of study at the University or any other accredited university.

The Adna W. Risley Memorial Scholarship ($500): Awarded to a UAlbany senior or graduate student pursuing a graduate degree in history.

The Class of 1972 Scholarship ($500): Awarded to a graduating senior planning to enter full time graduate study at the University during the net academic year.

Bertha Brimmer Legacy Scholarship ($1500): Awarded to a current or incoming freshman or transfer student who is the child or grandchild of an alumnus/a.

Attention Winter 2011 and Spring 2012 Graduates!

Senior Portraits are Happening Now on February 6th & February 7th. To schedule your appointment log on to www.ouryear.com and schedule an available portrait seating, or call 1-800-OUR-YEAR (687-9327). On the website, our school code to make an appointment is 87127. If you would like to pay before the appointment go to www.Yearbookordercenter.com and enter our school code 5776. Make sure you put in 2012 as the year. Leave homeroom tab blank. It only costs $68 for the sitting fee and a torch yearbook! Please bring your confirmed print out to your appointment that you have paid. You can also pay when you come to your appointment by cash or debit/credit.

Arrive for your appointment 10 minutes early. We are located on the 3rd floor of the Campus Center in room 305. Men should wear suits, women should wear blouses or business attire. Poses will be done in your own clothes and in a cap/gown provided by us. You will receive an email after your appointment to look at your proofs online. Your portraits and yearbook will be mailed to your permanent address so please give an address that you plan to have after you graduate in the fall. A retake session will be scheduled if needed at a $10 cost.

UAlbany Student Groups are invited to table at the 5th Annual UAlbany Day – Showcase at the Plaza on Monday, February 6, 2012 at the Empire State Plaza starting at 9:00 am.

CASH PRIZES FOR “BEST TABLE” DISPLAY:

The Student Group voted “Best Table Displays” at UAlbany Day 2012 will receive:

$500 prize for 1st Place

$250 for 2nd Place

$100 for 3rd Place

Displays should focus on the diverse and exciting opportunities available at UAlbany – particularly given that we anticipate over 1,000 local K-12 students. Although there will be some high school students in attendance, the large majority of these children will be between the age 8 and 12 years old, and your displays must be age appropriate in order to participate.

The Student Association would like to thank everyone that attended FallFest with LMFAO and Far East Movement and for making it one of the most unforgettable concerts in UA history! The SEFCU Arena was packed with over 3,300 people in attendance, sporting their FallFest t-shirts, FallFest wristbands and glow sticks! King of Kings Charity Basketball Tournament
