Student Association Response to Suspension of Fountain Day

In response to the University canceling Fountain Day 2011 in response to the Kegs and Eggs riots, Student Association President Justin Wax Jacobs has released the following statement Sunday afternoon:

"The decision by the University to cancel Fountain Day affects every student. The Student Association, with the greater sentiment of the student population, is disappointed with the decision. This decision was made completely by the University with no input by Student Association or any student leader. President Philip and the administration have taken full responsibility for the decision and although we respect their candor, we don't ultimately agree with the result.

Fountain Day is funded by the University, with a small portion of the funding coming from the Student Association's annual sponsorship of the event. At present, our position with the appropriated funds for our Fountain Day sponsorship are currently under discussion. Earlier in the academic year, in consultation with Vice President Leah Rotella and Director of Programming Joe Bonilla, we had previously decided to remove the concert from Fountain Day to ensure that there will be an event to enjoy the conclusion of the 2010-2011 academic year.

As an organization, we are committed to stepping up to the plate and making up for the cancellation of Fountain Day in anyway possible with our resources. Furthermore, we also ask, while there may be an overwhelming tide of resentment and the need to voice this resentment, we ask that students do not take any negative action as both the Albany Police Department and University Police Department are prepared take action against those who create unrest in the coming weeks. Any response to the decision should be and will be taken up by SA and student leaders to voice the concerns of the student body as a whole.

The last thing that any student needs is to be arrested, not only will there be a permanent mark on their record and reputation, but on the University as well."

2011 Student Group Purple and Gold Awards: Call for Nominations!

The Student Association Office of Student Group Affairs is now seeking nominations for the 2011 Student Group Purple and Gold Awards! Students are eligible to self-nominate their own groups and/or nominate other active groups on campus, and a panel of both Student Association officials and University at Albany staff will determine the award winners.

There are categories for both student group awards and individual student awards including – but not limited to – community service awards, programming awards and Student Group of the Year. A full list of award descriptions and copies of the nomination form will be available in the Student Association Office, Office of Student Involvement and Leadership and on the Student Association website as of Monday, March 14th. (These documents will also be e-mailed to the Executive Board of all Student Association recognized student organizations.)

Nomination forms will be due back to the Student Association office (Campus Center 116) by 5:00 pm on Monday, April 4th. If you have any questions regarding the nomination and/or selection process, please contact Student Group Affairs Director Nicole Jean at njean@uamail.albany.edu.

NEW POSITION AVAILABLE

The Assistant Director of Public Relations position is an essential part of the Department of Marketing for the Student Association. This position calls for a a minimum of 2-3 press releases weekly pertaining to news within the Student Association such as department events and marketing efforts. Other responsibilities include coordinating all media for Student Association events such as Speaker Series or concerts; will also be appointed to lead or assist in various small scale marketing/advertising projects such as SA Free Day or SA Cares. Application deadlines have been extended and will be accepted through Monday March 14th.

Ronald McDonald House

Next week (2/14-2/18) we are going to be tabling for the Ronald McDonald House Charities. 'RMHC' is an organization that raises money for families with children facing a medical crisis. Often they need to travel far to get the medical treatment that their child needs.

The RMHC provides a 'home away from home' for these families so they have somewhere to stay 'close to their hospitalized child at little or no cost.' (RMHC.ORG for more information) Every year they raise money by hanging hearts that are used as a donation.

We will be working with the 'hearts comittee' to raise as much money as possible next week in the LC's. As someone makes a donation, we will give them a paper heart to write their name on. We will then be able to hang it on one of the panels in the LC's. Tabling will take place from 10:00a.m.-4p.m. everyday of next week.

From February 10 until February 18 Student Association alongside the University's Department of Marketing and Communications will be hosting a contest for two tickets to this semesters World Within Reach Speaker Series featuring President Bill Clinton.

Each day someone will be standing by the Campus Center with a purple shirt on. The first person to mention that Bill Clinton is coming to UAlbany will immediately be entered to win a pair of tickets to the event. Everyday a photo of the person who is being entered to win will be uploaded.

For more than 30 years, the University at Albany Alumni Association has provided scholarships to undergraduate and graduate students to help continue UAlbany’s tradition of excellence and opportunity. We are pleased to announce funding for the following student scholarships for 2010-2011. We would appreciate your publicizing these awards to ensure a diverse group of qualified applications.

Spirit Scholarship ($1,000): Awarded to three UAlbany students who demonstrate outstanding school spirit and commitment to the University and its students.

The Albert N. Husted Fellowship ($1,000): Awarded to a UAlbany senior planning for full-time graduate study in any area of study at the University or any other accredited university.

The Agnes E. Futterer Memorial Fellowship ($750): Awarded to a UAlbany senior entering graduate study in theatre or a theatre-related field at the UAlbany or any other accredited institution or recognized theatre program.

The Class of 1972 Scholarship ($700): Awarded to a graduating UAlbany senior planning to enter full-time graduate study at the University during the next academic year.

The Adna W. Risley Memorial Scholarship ($500): Awarded to a UAlbany senior or graduate student pursuing a graduate degree in history.

Bertha Brimmer Legacy Scholarship ($1,500): Awarded to a current or incoming freshman or transfer student who is the child or grandchild of an alumnus/a.

Scholarship applications will be available online beginning Feb. 1 at www.albany.edu/financialaid/. Applications are due March 7.

DEPUTY COMPTROLLER

The Deputy Comptroller assists with the financial management and accounting of the Student Association under the Office of the Comptroller. The Deputy Comptroller acts as a surrogate for the Comptroller per the Comptroller's requestThe Deputy Comptroller reports to the Comptroller of the Student Association. This is a stipend position, requiring the individual officeholder to work at least ten (10) hours per week per the SA bylaws. Autism Speaks, the nation's largest autism advocacy organization, is proud to announce that Albany's Inaugural Walk Now for Autism Speaks will be October 30, 2010 in the Arena at SUNY Albany.

Students at University of Albany under the leadership of student Walk Chair - Jaclyn Renner, have help to organize the grass roots effort to bring individuals and families together as one strong voice for people with autism. We are hoping to attract hundreds of people to an event to recognize the fundraising efforts of many.

ABOUT WALK NOW FOR AUTISM SPEAKS

Toys "R" Us Children's Fund, and Babies"R"Us proudly serve as national sponsors of the Autism Speaks Walk Now for Autism Speaks program.

Walk Now for Autism Speaks is a unique fundraising event which creates a sage and fun day for families who are affected with autism. The day includes a 1 mile walk and Community Resource Fair providing valuable autism resources o the public. Each vendor provides a creative a creative child- friendly activity as well. This year Toys"R"Us will have a booth space serving as home base for Geoffrey the Giraffe. Attendees will also be able to stop by and sign their children up for Geoffrey's Birthday Club and pick up the "Ten Toys That Speak to Autism" handout, a list of toys that help build skills of children with autism, created in collaboration with Autism Speaks.

The Walk Now for Autism Speaks events are the signature fundraising events for Autism Speaks, raising more than $29 million last year to support autism research. This year, over 80 Walk Now events will take place across the United States, as well as Canada and the United Kingdom.

UA U VOTE! Student Association Senate votes to redo elections

The Student Association Senate, under the advice of Interim Elections Commissioner Chris Arlotta, has approved holding new elections for all living area and at large seats this Monday, September 27 through Tuesday, September 28.

This past Monday and Tuesday, technical errors cross campus were incurred by students who attempted to vote at their respective living areas. According to Arlotta, the issue has been resolved (please note that both the Student Association and the Office of Student Involvement & Leadership are not responsible for any voting irregularities incurred by online voting).

So remember, if you voted before, please vote again to ensure your representation in the Senate.

How to Vote:

(2) Click 'Campus Life'

SA Supreme Court Spring 2010 Elections Ruling

The Student Association Supreme Court reached a unanimous decision to throw out the “600” policy (elections policy), and placed a permanent injunction on the Senate for fall elections. After the Senate approves language re-structuring the elections policy, SA Senate elections can be held next semester.

In the "Wax Jacobs vs Wimpelberg" petition, the court found in favor of the respondent, Wimpelberg.

In the "Fioravanti vs Rotella" petition, the court found in favor of the respondent, Rotella.

In the "Bonilla/Rotella vs Wax Jacobs/Fioravanti" petition, the court was hung in a 3-3 tie, and affirms the lower court decision of commissioner Meagan Chen, finding Wax Jacobs as President and Rotella as Vice President.
