The History of Transportation

It’s amazing as we evolve into the world of transportation, we tend to lose focus on how it came to be. As I take you on a brief flashback through the history of transporation, imagine how life would have been if we were living in those ages.

- In 3500 BC the 1st wheels on cart, the chariot is invented.
- In 2000 BC river boats with oars are invented.
- In 181 AD, the wheelbarrow is invented.
- In 1492, Leonardo Da Vinci theorized machines that would fly.
- In 1620, the first submarine was invented.
- In 1662, Blaise Pascal invents the 1st public horse drawn bus.
- In 1783, the 1st practical steamboat was invented by Marquis Claude Francois.
- In 1790, the first bicycle was invented.
- In 1862, Jean Lenoir makes a gasoline engine automobile.
- In 1903, the Wright Brothers invent and fly the 1st engined airplane.
- In 1908, the Model T Ford was invented by Henry Ford.

As you can see time, resources, experimentation and aptitude played a huge role in refining the multitude of different modes of transportation. Whether it was a buggy, boat, plane or automobile, they all served the purpose of transporting humans or freight. Making transport more and more efficient for a daily use, vehicles have revolutionalized the way we live. Billions of people today, walk, ride a bike or drive. Its a busy week here at U-Haul Truck Sales headquarters. Many people and even small businesses are receiving their tax refunds back. With extra $$$$ in hand, many are deciding how to spend the this quick cash. With the economy starting to look up, many individuals are looking to expand their small business. Many of which need transportation whether for their equipment or to transport goods, transportation is a dire necessity. U-Haul is fascinated with truck transformations we continue to see on the road. It’s a great feeling when I get off work and drive 25 miles home to see a used U-Haul refurbished by a business to run their own operations. I’m very excited to let you all know that U-Haul will be offering 1997 E-350 17 footers available for sale now. These are priced on average of $6k. Also we will have more of the 2003 GMC 10 foot box trucks (my favorite) available for sale. These 10 footers are priced on average for 8k. The great news is prices are negotiable. I always encourage customers to call and schedule an appointment to come in for a test drive, ask questions and make your offer to the salesperson!! Who knows that tax money could buy you a quality truck! If you don’t have 6-8k to spend, I suggest a 1995-96 GMC 3500 or Ford F350 for around 3-4k depending on mileage and condition. With many small contractors with a high demand of work, it’s a great idea to increase your fleet and get multiple jobs going and ensure you are in business. So I received this email from Krawler Hauler, Scott’s friends Shawn who also purchased a 26 foot Uhaul International box truck and converted it into an RV and toy hauler all in one. Here’s his email to me about re-registering the vehicle recently.

Just headed downtown this afternoon to re-register my UHaul Toterhome, and thought I’d send you some Montana factoids:

Last year, my Toterhome wasn’t modified when I registered it, and was still very much a 26′ medium duty box truck. It cost me $185 to register for the year. Montana law (which is similar to a lot of states) allows us to get a converted vehicle inspected by a Law Enforcement Officer, and it can be registered for a different useThis year, since I had it inspected and the title changed, I will be able to register it permanently (in Montana, any non-commercial vehicle over 9 years old can be registered permanently) for $215!! If I did an annual registration, it would have only cost ~$100/year as a motorhome. The title change was $30, and the inspection was free.

Motorhomes are significantly cheaper to insure and register than medium trucks. There are also generally GVW loopholes for motorhomes, where GVW and GCVW rules much stricter for a “medium duty truck”. Just thought those tidbits might be of interest to people looking at these trucks.

To formally convert it to a Motorhome, in Montana we had to have 4 of the 5 items below:
Interior Electrical system/lights

Cooking–stove/sink

Toilet

Furnace

Refrigerator

It is my understanding the list of requirements is fairly common among states, with a sink and electrical being the most common/important.
