The purpose of UICArea.com is to educate and provide opportunities for civic-minded individuals to work for the good of the city. We encourage you to join with us in this effort in two ways:

First, by subscribing to this blog. Here you will find a plethora of great events going on in the UIC area. This can be done by simply clicking on the link “rss” at the top right side of this page where you find “stay updated via rss”. If you do not yet have an account with an RSS Reader, this will also direct you through the steps to sign up.

Secondly, you can follow this link to “friend” us on Facebook. Here you’ll be able to see summaries of any blog posts to the home page of UICArea.com, but even more, you’ll be able to comment on our “wall” to let others know about events or opportunities within the UIC area that you discover yourself.

Global Activism Expo

Coming up on April 30. The Global Activism Expo will be a great event to check out at the UIC Forum from Noon-6:00. This is a free event where you can “listen, learn, and get involved” with over 100 Chicago-area global activists (not to mention that there will be free music and food involved). Learn more here…

Knight Moves Chess Club

Just wanted to highlight for you on April 30 the upcoming spring open tournament of the Knight Moves Chess Club which has gone on in the past at Rudy Lozano Public Library. Registration will begin from 9:00-9:30 AM after which there will be 5 rounds at: 10:00, 11:20, 1:00, 2:15 and 3:30 with an award ceremony at 4:30. There will be two age categories: 14 & under and 15 & up.

The Chicago Colloquium, an informal monthly discussion group focusing on philosophical issues, extends an open invitation to its next I-Thou dialogue. The group meets on the 4th Friday of each month from 7:00-9:00 PM. Check it out at Barbara’s Bookstore at UIC. 1218 South Halsted Street.

The Air We Breathe

“The Chicago Clean Air Design Challenge is a regional design contest to address issues of air quality in two of Chicago’s most affected neighborhoods- Pilsen and Little Village. Residents of Pilsen and Little Village live below two coal powered plants that regularly emit lead and other toxins.” Entries are due by April 18.
