Fellowship in Urban Forestry

The Garden Club of America (GCA) with the support of Casey Trees in Washington, DC, is soliciting applications for its national urban forestry fellowship. GCA has a history of interest in the health of the urban forest and would like to support young scientists in their undergraduate and graduate studies in this field. The study areas of interest are far reaching, including urban forest management and planning as well as topics in biology, ecology, or human health that will specifically move urban forest science forward. The GCA Fellowship in Urban Forestry will be awarded in early 2014. Applications are reviewed by a selection committee at Virginia Tech composed of practicing urban forestry scientists and professionals in related fields. Final selection is made by The Garden Club of America.

The fellowship is highly competitive and applicants must present clearly in their applications how they will advance the GCA’s goal of increasing future capacity in urban forestry research.

Eligibility:The fellowship is open to both graduate students and advanced undergraduates pursuing degrees in urban forestry, forestry, horticulture, environmental studies or a closely related field at any 4-year college or university degree program in the United States. Recipients must be students in the U.S. who will be enrolled as juniors or seniors or graduate students during the fellowship period (2014-15). The award is for $4,000 and recipients may apply for one additional year of funding. In 2013, four fellowships were awarded.

National Wildlife Federation's Campus Ecology Fellows confront global warming on their campuses and help to educate and engage the campus community on global warming impacts and solutions.

NWF Fellowships allow students to pursue their vision of an ecologically sustainable future through tangible projects to confront global warming on campus and in the community. Fellows gain practical experience in the conservation field and first-hand knowledge of the challenges and opportunities inherent in successful conservation efforts.

EDF: Climate Corps Fellowship

The Environmental Defense Fund partners with businesses, governments, and communities to find practical environmental solutions. EDF strives to help companies bridge gap between the knowledge of energy costs and the resources to quantify and curtail the financial and environmental impacts.

EDF recruits forward thinking companies and selects qualified MBA students for a summer fellowship. Matching the companies with a student, they train the student to help the companies become more efficient.

Summer 2011 Fellowship:
EDF Climate Corps seeks top MBA students with analytical and project management backgrounds who are excited to make an impact through energy efficiency in corporate America.

Minimum qualifications:
Superior oral and written communication skills, including presentation skills
Self-starter with strong project management experience
Graduate-level background in financial analysis
Consulting, corporate advisory or large company experience
Eligibility to work in the United States during the summer 2011
Resourcefulness and ability to work both independently and on cross-functional teams

Preferred qualifications:
MBA candidate and/or graduate
Engineering background
Demonstrated experience working on energy efficiency, energy or sustainability projects or initiatives
Familiarity with climate change and energy issues
Environmental passion

Lincoln Institute: Planning and Urban Form Research (April 1, 2010)

The Lincoln Institute of Land Policy and the Department of Planning and Urban Form invite applications for Planning and Urban Form Research Fellowships in support of major research projects.
In this solicitation, they are seeking research proposals that address the theme of climate change, including:

The effect of urban density, connectivity, and mix of land uses on greenhouse gas emissions.
Regional planning responses to climate change, as are currently being implemented in California.
Managing the risks presented by extreme weather, including increased flooding, wildfires, drought, and exacerbation of the urban heat island effect.

Center for Contemporary History and Policy at the Chemical Heritage Foundation

While in residence, 2010 fellows will pursue research projects contributing to the program’s core project, "Controlling Chemicals." The Udall Foundation awards two one-year fellowships of up to $24,000 to doctoral candidates whose research concerns U.S. environmental public policy and/or environmental conflict resolution and who are entering their final year of writing the dissertation. Dissertation Fellowships are intended to cover both academic and living expenses from July 1, 2010 through June 30, 2011.
