Chicago’s Advocates for Urban Agriculture seeks a motivated Coordinator to help AUA’s Steering Committee and members to promote urban agriculture in Chicago. Our goals for the Coordinator in 2012 are to grow our member base in all communities of Chicago, improve and extend our communication and outreach, and coordinate our activities and network.

The mission of Chicago Advocates for Urban Agriculture is to expand and strengthen urban agriculture in Chicago, from home-and-community based growing to market gardens and small farms. As a coalition of practitioners, AUA supports the work of its members, both organizations and individuals, by advocating for good urban agriculture policy, sharing information, resources and best practices, and connecting people and projects through a strong network.

Position: Coordinator
Location: Chicago, IL
Salary: $12-15 per hour, depending on experience
Description and Duties:

Administer AUA website and update notices and information.
Develop AUA print materials and social media.
Create and manage members database.
Coordinate outreach to community organizations and individuals.
Help to organize and promote three member gatherings.
Direct volunteers to working groups and other activities.
Coordinate and/or help represent AUA at special events.
Attend and manage logistics for Steering Committee meetings and calls.
Help to coordinate Working Groups communication.
Manage project to map and inventory urban agriculture sites.
Research funding and other resource support opportunities.

The ideal candidate:

Two years of work experience in related fields: urban agriculture and food systems; community, organizational, or small business development; or other relevant experience
Exceptional verbal, interpersonal, and written communication skills. Knowledge and familiarity with proofreading, composing, and editing communications.
Excellent attention to detail, organizational skills and ability to prioritize, multi-task and work independently.
Ability to interact effectively with AUA Steering Committee, AUA Members, and other community organizations and residents
Computer skills including fluency with Word and Excel; familiarity with database applications, website editing, and basic mapping preferred
Willingness to work occasional evenings and weekend days

The Fine print:

Supervision: The Coordinator is supervised by Angelic Organics Learning Center staff, and reports to the AUA Steering Committee and Working Groups.

Undergraduate Recycling Assistant

Physical Plant in conjunction with the Office of Sustainability is supporting UIC’s Recycling Program. We are seeking undergraduate students for the position of Recycling Assistant for 10-15 hr/week during the semester and 35-40 hr/week during the summer. Work hours will be scheduled between 8 am to 5 pm, Monday to Friday. Responsibilities include:

Generating awareness of and promoting both recycling and conservation programs on campus
Monitoring of recycling bins’ location, condition and signage
Installation and placement of bins in existing and new locations
Maintenance of records on recycled materials
Performing other duties as assigned.

Hourly rate: $8.51

Qualifications:

Strong interest in learning about and promoting recycling.
Ability to manage data in Microsoft Excel.
Physical ability to lift 75 pounds. Need a valid Illinois Driver's license.

Office of Sustainability: Communications Aide

The Office of Sustainability seeks a sustainability-minded person to support our social media operations and help update components of our website. Work tasks include updating Twitter/Facebook accounts, posting articles to our blog, adding events to our web calendar and other duties as assigned to support the office.

Preferred skills:
Essential:

Experience with social media (Facebook, Twitter, etc)
Strong interest and understanding of sustainability-related topics
Google applications (Blogger, Documents, Calendar, Maps, etc.)

Desired (or willingness to learn):

HTML 4.01+
CSS 2.1+
Dreamweaver CS3+, or similiar WYSIWIG editor, or facility using text-based editors.
Adobe Creative Suite 3+ (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign)

Must be available to work 10-20 hours/week during the workday (8:30 am to 5:00 pm). Compensation for this position is consistent with the policies set by the UIC Student Employment Office.

Position in Environmental Health and Safety (Due Feb 20, 2009)

The University of Illinois at Chicago, Environmental Health and Safety Office seeks an Assistant Director for Chemical Safety. The Assistant Director for Chemical Safety will be responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation and management of the chemical safety and chemical hazardous waste programs for the University campus and medical center in compliance with RCRA, EPA and IEPA regulations.
Duties include management of LQG hazardous waste facility, supervision of staff, chemical safety training, chemical, incinerator and waste facility inspections and enforcement, and environmental compliance reporting. Other duties include waste minimization and chemical redistribution programs, participation on the campus Hazwoper Emergency Response Team, and assistance with the asbestos management program.
Advanced degree in Environmental Health and Safety, environmental or chemical engineering, environmental science or industrial hygiene required. CHMM, CSP, or CIH certification preferred. Demonstrated knowledge of current local, state and federal laws, codes and regulations pertaining to chemical safety and hazardous waste required. Three years of administration or management experience with staff supervision necessary. Must have excellent oral and written communication skills for a variety of audiences. Data management and analysis with database knowledge and experience a plus. Must have a valid driver’s license and be capable of extensive walking and respirator use.
