The Office of Sustainability is piloting a structured internship that will place students in various campus units to assist in advancing the campus’ sustainability goals. We are seeking a Graduate Assistant to:

· Provide organizational support for the internship program;

· Create website content for the program;

· Develop campus partnerships for internship placement;

· Assist in curriculum development for the interns;

· Assist in recruitment of interns.

The preferred candidate will:

· Have an undergraduate degree in sustainability, an environmental field, or cultural anthropology;

· Be proficient in computer applications (Word, Excel, etc);

· Have excellent organizational and communication skills, both written and verbal;

· Be available to work during Spring 2014.

Additional experience as an instructor or teaching assistant, preferably in the area of sustainability studies, public health, or environmental studies is desirable. This position is a 25% graduate assistantship (10 hrs/week).

Divvy Bikeshare Program Director Position Opening

The Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) is seeking a Bikeshare Program Director for the recently launched the Divvy bike share program, which is operated by Alta Bicycle Share (contractor). The program is contract-operated ($62 million over 5 years) and requires dedicated staff to actively manage the program and administer the contract. The Program Director (bike share manager) will supervise the contractor operating the bicycle sharing program; the contractor will employ 100-150 employees on a permanent basis.

The Divvy bike share program is a large, high-visibility, mayoral-priority program. The Program Director will be responsible for ensuring the success of Chicago's bicycle sharing program. Success is defined by the number of annual users and trips, satisfaction of the users, and meeting revenue targets.

Summer/Fall 2013: UIC Office of Sustainability Internship

The UIC Office of Sustainability is hiring an intern to support the outreach and engagement initiatives aligned with the Office’s mission.

Aim of Internship: Familiarize students interested in urban sustainability with issues common to many universities, including: bicycle planning, community engagement, energy conservation & efficiency, recycling/composting, and peer-to-peer training programs. The intern’s main responsibilities will be to assist with planning and logistics of events on campus and community engagement via social media.

Required Qualifications:
· Interest in, demonstrated experience with, or coursework relating to any sustainability issue(s)
· Excellent communication skills; strong interpersonal communication
· Good organizational skills, excellent attention for detail
· Ability to work independently, based on instructions from office staff, with minimal supervision
· Capacity to learn and use web-based tools including social media (Facebook, Twitter) and content-management systems; prior experience with social media is important
· Familiarity with office productivity software (MS Office required, Adobe Creative Suite preferred)
· Ability to work 10 hours per week in the Office of Sustainability

Seeking Graduate Assistant: Bike Friendly USA Application

The Office of Sustainability seeks a graduate assistant to support bike planning efforts on the UIC campus. Dates of appointment are approximately for the Spring Semester 2013, with option for renewal. This appointment will be for 50% time with a monthly stipend. Base tuition and service fee waiver are included with this assistantship; it does not cover the tuition differentials and other student fees.

The main duties of the appointment will be to help evaluate, prioritize and implement key recommendations from the League of American Bicyclists Fall 2012 Report for UIC. Job duties could include: develop recommendations for a range of classes, workshops, outreach/education materials and events; draft bicycle guidelines; assist the Bicycle Advisory Committee; data collection; survey development and analysis. This position will work very closely with Office of Sustainability staff and other campus administrators.

Qualifications:

Familiarity with cycling on campus and in the city
Knowledge of bicycle planning and infrastructure
Demonstrated knowledge of urban planning best practices
Excellent communication skills
Graduation date no sooner than December 2013

· Preferred: Has taken at least one ArcGIS course at UIC or equivalent

Undergraduate Recycling Assistant

Physical Plant in conjunction with the Office of Sustainability is supporting UIC’s Recycling Program. We are seeking undergraduate students for the position of Recycling Assistant for 10-15 hr/week during the semester and 35-40 hr/week during the summer. Work hours will be scheduled between 8 am to 5 pm, Monday to Friday. Responsibilities include:

Generating awareness of and promoting both recycling and conservation programs on campus
Monitoring of recycling bins’ location, condition and signage
Installation and placement of bins in existing and new locations
Maintenance of records on recycled materials
Performing other duties as assigned.

Hourly rate: $8.51

Qualifications:

Strong interest in learning about and promoting recycling.
Ability to manage data in Microsoft Excel.

Position in Environmental Health and Safety (Due Feb 20, 2009)

The University of Illinois at Chicago, Environmental Health and Safety Office seeks an Assistant Director for Chemical Safety. The Assistant Director for Chemical Safety will be responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation and management of the chemical safety and chemical hazardous waste programs for the University campus and medical center in compliance with RCRA, EPA and IEPA regulations.
Duties include management of LQG hazardous waste facility, supervision of staff, chemical safety training, chemical, incinerator and waste facility inspections and enforcement, and environmental compliance reporting. Other duties include waste minimization and chemical redistribution programs, participation on the campus Hazwoper Emergency Response Team, and assistance with the asbestos management program.
Advanced degree in Environmental Health and Safety, environmental or chemical engineering, environmental science or industrial hygiene required. CHMM, CSP, or CIH certification preferred. Demonstrated knowledge of current local, state and federal laws, codes and regulations pertaining to chemical safety and hazardous waste required. Three years of administration or management experience with staff supervision necessary. Must have excellent oral and written communication skills for a variety of audiences. Data management and analysis with database knowledge and experience a plus. Must have a valid driver’s license and be capable of extensive walking and respirator use.
