‘No Impact Man’ Chosen as Common Reading for UNC's First-Year Students

A committee representing University of Northern Colorado students, faculty, staff and community members has chosen No Impact Man by Colin Beavan as the 2012-13 First-Year Common Book.

The full title of Beavan's 2009 book is No Impact Man: The Adventures of a Guilty Liberal Who Attempts to Save the Planet and the Discoveries He Makes About Himself and Our Way of Life in the Process. In it, Beavan details a year-long effort that he, his wife and young daughter undertake to make as little environmental impact as possible, while living in the heart of New York City, forgoing electricity, motorized transportation, takeout food, toilet paper and more.

Copies of the book will be distributed to academic departments and first-year students, and campus programming will be built around the book during the 2012-13 academic year.

An award-winning blogger, Beavan also documented his socio-environmental experiment for the movie of the same name. He previously wrote two other acclaimed non-fiction books and is a visiting scholar at New York University, an advisor to the university's Sustainability Task Force, sits on the board of directors of New York City's Transportation Alternatives and on the advisory council of Just Food. He has a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the University of Liverpool.

For more information about Beavan and his various projects, visit his website.
