UNC Faculty Member Receives $421,000 Grant from American Cancer Society

A University of Northern Colorado associate professor has been awarded a three-year, $421,000 grant from the American Cancer Society to research strategies for minimizing the side effects of chemotherapy.

David Hydock, Ph.D., and UNC researchers will study the factors that lead to severe fatigue in cancer patients being treated with the drug doxorubicin. The researchers will also continue investigating the benefits of exercise in impaired heart and skeletal muscle function — common side effects of the treatment.

Joining Hydock, an associate professor in the School of Sport and Exercise Science, will be his mentor, Professor Reid Hayward, and two doctorate students, Eric Bredahl and Noah Gibson.

For 10 years, Hayward has been researching impaired cardiac function resulting from doxorubicin and the benefits of exercise. He was the first person in the field to conduct this type of research.

Hydock and the team will first investigate cardiac functionality and muscle functionality in a rat model, after doxorubicin has been introduced. Hydock and Hayward hope this will begin to reveal the specific elements of the drug that create such intense side effects in cancer patients receiving chemotherapy.

The second phase of the project explores the effects endurance and resistance forms of exercise have on muscle toxicity in a rat model. Through this research, the team hopes to discover new ways cancer patients can properly manage side effects of chemotherapy.

The project will begin July 1.

About the grant
The American Cancer Society Mentored Research Scholar Grant in Applied and Clinical Research provides support for mentored research and training to full-time junior faculty, typically within the initial four years of their first independent appointment. The goal is for these beginning investigators to become independent researchers as either clinical scientists or cancer control and prevention researchers. The title of Hydock's collaborative research (classified as MRSG-12-179-01-PCSM from the American Cancer Society) is "Doxurubicin Treatment and Skeletal Muscle Function: Effects of Exercise."

UNC Graduate Program Ranks Top 5 Worldwide

The Sport Administration graduate program at the University of Northern Colorado earned a top 5 worldwide ranking from the leading publication covering the international sport business community.

UNC is one of only two U.S. universities to make the top 5 in SportBusiness International magazine's first-ever ranking of sport management courses around the world.

"I'm extremely honored for us to be so highly ranked," said David Stotlar, director of College of Natural and Health Sciences' School of Sport and Exercise Science. "It's a great tribute not only to our faculty but to the great success our graduates have achieved."

To be eligible for consideration in the rankings, graduate programs had to focus on covering the sport business in its entirety and, at a minimum, offer curriculum for no fewer than three consecutive years.

Course providers were asked to supply data on graduates employed after completing the program and other facts and figures, including course length and student demographics.

Alumni also were surveyed about the quality of teaching and support in career placement in the sports industry.

At UNC, 30 graduate students enroll annually in Sport Administration, which has been offered as a graduate program since 1988. Within three months after earning their degrees, nearly eight out of 10 graduates are employed full time in the sports industry.

UNC graduates currently working in the sector have taken positions in the NBA, NFL, Major League Baseball, Major League Soccer, the U.S. Olympic and Paralympics, and in numerous college athletic departments.

Sport Administration faculty include Stotlar, Dianna Gray and Linda Sharp. They teach program courses on sport management, law, ethics, marketing, finance and public relations. For more information about the program, visit http://www.unco.edu/nhs/ses/ms_sa.htm

Postgraduate Sports Course Ranking 2012
Sport Business International

Ohio University

The International Centre for Sports Studies (Switzerland)

Windsor University (Canada)

Coventry University (United Kingdom)

University of Northern Colorado

UNC doesn't offer a summer commencement ceremony.

Tim Wirth, former U.S senator from Colorado, was the featured speaker. Wirth, who also served in the U.S. House of Representatives and held appointed positions in the U.S. Department of Education during the Nixon administration and the State Department in the Clinton administration, currently is the president of the United Nations Foundation and the Better World Fund.

On Saturday, May 5, UNC alumnus Don Meyer addressed about 1,100 spring and 360 summer graduates and their friends and families during the undergraduate ceremony that began at 10 a.m. at Nottingham Field, intersection of 17th Avenue and Reservoir Road.

Meyer, a standout baseball and basketball player for the Bears, earned his bachelor's degree in 1967 and a master's degree in 1968.
Visiting Scholar, Author at UNC April 23 to Discuss Environmental Quality, Human Equality

Julian Agyeman, professor and chair of Environmental Policy and Planning at Tufts University, will offer solutions for achieving a better quality of life for mankind through a combination of environmental sustainability and social justice during a presentation April 23 that's part of Earth Week observances at the University of Northern Colorado.

Agyeman will present "Just Sustainabilities: Re-Imagining (E)quality, Living Within Limits" 7-8 p.m. Monday, April 23, in the University Center, intersection of 20th Street and 10th Avenue.

The presentation is free and open to the public as part of the school's Schulze Interdisciplinary Speaker Series, but a ticket is required. Tickets are available by calling the UNC Ticket Office at 351-4849. Free parking is available after 5 p.m. in UNC parking lots.

Agyeman uses examples from around the world to demonstrate how caring for people and the environment go hand-in-hand and that we face a bleak future if we neglect that symbiotic relationship. His concept of "just sustainability" departs from the common view that environmental quality and human equality are separate issues.

Agyeman holds degrees in botany, geography, conservation policy and environmental education. He's co-founder and co-editor of Local Environment: The International Journal of Justice and Sustainability, and his work has been published in more than 150 publications including books, newspaper articles, professional magazines and journals.

His visit is sponsored by UNC's Life of the Mind Schulze Fund, Environmental and Sustainability Studies program, University College, Equity and Diversity Council, and Office of Student Activities.

For more information, call 970-351-2220 or email richard.jurin@unco.edu.

Presentations by Holocaust Scholars, Survivor Highlight Holocaust Observance Events at UNC April 12-19

Presentations by two scholars from the U.S. Holocaust Museum and recollections of a Holocaust survivor highlight events at the University of Northern Colorado April 12-19 to remember, learn about - and from - the Holocaust and other genocides.

The weeklong observance also includes a workshop to help pre-service secondary teachers effectively integrate accurate information about the Holocaust in their lesson plans. The campus events are part of Greeley's annual Holocaust Memorial Observances.

The campus activities begin Thursday, April 12, when Peter Fredlake, director of national outreach for teacher initiatives for the National Institute for Holocaust Education at the U.S. Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C., presents "When Never Again Becomes Ever Again: Breaking the Pattern of Genocide" at 7:30 p.m. in the Columbine suite in the University Center, intersection of 20th Street and 10th Avenue.

Fredlake, who visited Rwanda last year, will examine how lessons from the 1994 genocide there and the Holocaust can be used to create a future free of genocide.

On Sunday, April 15, Peter Black, senior historian at the Holocaust Museum's Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies, will present "Social, Economic, and Intellectual Roots of Nazi Anti-Semitism" at 3:30 p.m., in the Centennial Hall room in Brown Hall, intersection of 19th Street and 9th Avenue.

Black, formerly a member of a U.S. Department of Justice team that tracked and prosecuted suspected war criminals, will examine the history of anti-Semitism from its beginnings in the Middle Ages and how it worked its way into mainstream German political philosophy prior to World War II.

During his visit, Black is also leading the day-long workshop designed to prepare pre-service secondary teachers like those in UNC's teacher preparation programs to teach about the Holocaust. UNC is one of only six institutions of higher education in the nation selected by the Holocaust Memorial Museum to host a workshop, which is free for participants through funding from the Arthur and Rochelle Belfer Foundation.

Holocaust survivor Mariam Blumenthal Lazan will provide a first-hand account of her childhood memories of life in Nazi Germany and her family's imprisonment in concentration camps at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 19, in the University Center ballroom.

Based on Four Perfect Pebbles, the award-winning children's book she co-authored, Lazan's moving presentation will include a performance by the Greeley Children's Chorale. Lazan's book, named a Young Adults' Choice by the International Reading Association, will be available for purchase.

Other related events on campus include:

Voices from the Holocaust - Stories of Holocaust survivors will be read 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Monday, April 16, in Michener Library. .

Litany of the Martyrs - Holocaust victims' names will be read 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Tuesday, April 17, in the University Center's Fireside Lounge.

Surviving Hitler: a Love Story - The true story of a Jewish teenager and an injured soldier's role in a failed plot to kill Hitler is documented in the BBC film showing from 12:15-1:15 p.m. Wednesday, April 18, in Michener library.

Korkoro - Inspired by a true story, the 2009 film from France about a gypsy family who escapes the Nazis during World War II with the help of French villagers will show at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 18, and 7 and 9:15 p.m. Thursday, April 18, in Lindou Auditorium in Michener Library. Tickets are $3 at the showing.

Breaking Boundaries - A Holocaust authors and artists display will run April 13-20 in the Michener Library reference area.

All events are free and open to the public, unless otherwise noted. Free parking is available in UNC parking lots on weekends and after 5 p.m. on weekdays.

For more information, about Holocaust remembrance events at UNC, contact Jeri Kraver at 970-351-2971 or jeraldine.kraver@unco.edu.

For a complete list of Holocaust remembrance events in Greeley, visit: http://www.aims.edu/student/studentlife/hmo_schedule.htm.

Holocaust remembrance events at UNC are sponsored in whole or part by the U.S. Holocaust Museum, the UNC English Language and Literature Department and it's Neal Cross Fund and International Film Series, and Michener Library.

UNC Trustees to Hold Phone Meeting April 11

UNC's Board of Trustees will meet at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 11, via a teleconference originating in the fourth-floor boardroom of Carter Hall.

Trustees will take action on a proposed project to install backup generators on west campus. The system could be used to supply power for west campus when demand peaks through Xcel Energy, the university's primary service provider, or in the event of a power outage. The generators also would allow the university to participate in Xcel's interruptible service program that provides ongoing electrical rate credits, resulting in monthly savings that would add up annually to cover the cost to install and maintain the system.

No other items are on the agenda.
