When Lauren Simmons started out at UNH Manchester, she had a plan. She was going to graduate with a pharmacy degree, go work in a pharmacy, live happily ever after. Then, she worked in a pharmacy and realized pretty quickly, it just wasn’t for her. She switched her major to Biological Sciences, but that clear path from before suddenly seemed less clear. And faced with the prospect of having to choose an internship, it got downright murky.

What can #biology students learn from a cemetery?
Adjunct Professor Christine Andrews tells us -> Students are conducting an ecological study at the population level. They collect birth and death data to compare an 1830’s cohort with an 1880’s cohort – a demographic study.
As the lab literature states: “By collecting information on the year of death for individuals of the same age class, a cohort, you can produce a graphical representation of their survivorship”. This is a ‘survivorship’ curve, and when comparing these from two different cohorts, the effects of lifestyles, and other demographic changes between the cohorts can be seen.
