1. Postgraduate Award

Recognising accomplishments in research, publications, conferences and contribution to the postgraduate community. Nomination is done through Head of School/Department (HoS/HoD) and each school/department can only nominate one postgraduate researcher. Postgraduate researchers can nominate themselves to HoS/HoD for consideration.

An early celebration of Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year is just around the corner and many of us are gearing up to prepare for the annual celebration. For the Chinese, it is a celebration deeply rooted in culture and tradition.

At the Graduate School, our tradition involves coming together to celebrate this festive occasion with our postgraduate students. This year, our joyous gathering took place on 31 January, a prelude to the upcoming holidays and an auspicious start to the Year of the Dragon.

The celebratory luncheon witnessed a lively turnout of our postgraduate community, indulging in a delectable array of local dishes that added a flavourful touch to the festivities.

A warm welcome address was delivered by Professor Maniam Kaliannan, Associate Dean of Graduate School, setting the tone for a successful year ahead.

A cheer to an auspicious and prosperous year 

As we usher in the Year of the Dragon, we look forward to a year filled with growth, success, and a continued sense of community. May the festivities of this early celebration set the stage for a successful and fulfilling year for our postgraduate community.

We are delighted to share news of a momentous achievement for our University in the Universitas21 (U21) Three Minute Thesis (3MT^®) 2023 Competition. 

‌‌The U21 3MT^® competition gathers top doctoral students from around the world, challenging them to distill their thesis into a three-minute presentation that communicates the heart of their research to a global audience.

‌Diret Bitrus Tang’an, from our UK campus, has emerged victorious in the People’s Choice category with his presentation on utilising microwave heating to address petroleum contamination in the Niger Delta. 

‌Congratulations to Diret for this well-deserved triumph, marking a proud moment for the entire UoN community!

As we stand at the threshold of a new year, the Graduate School is poised for a transformative year ahead.

‌‌Your postgraduate research experience remains at the forefront of our priorities. While substantial initiatives and progress have been made, we recognise there is much to do. A comprehensive review is under way, with a focus on enhancing opportunities for postgraduate research training development and streamlining the management of postgraduate research progression.

‌Diret Bitrus Tang’an, from our UK Campus, is currently representing the University in the global online Universitas 21 (U21) Three Minute Thesis Competition (3MT^®). 

‌Diret took the top spot in our tri-campus round of competition with his presentation that explains how microwave heating can be used to help clean petroleum contamination from the Niger delta.

Tis the season to be jolly, and we are diving headfirst into the festive spirit with Christmas just around the corner!

We hosted an Early Christmas and Year End luncheon for our postgraduate students on Wednesday 13 December 2023. This luncheon went beyond our usual festive gathering for our postgraduate students, it was also an extra special occasion for us to express our appreciation to the dedicated members of staff of the University, from both the academic and professional services, who have generously contributed to and supported the Graduate School in enhancing the postgraduate student experience throughout the year.

For us at the Graduate School, this luncheon was a heartfelt “thank you” wrapped in tinsel and adorned with festive cheer. It was not just a celebration; it was a recognition of the incredible teamwork and commitment that makes our postgraduate community thrive.

As we embrace the holiday season, we want to extend our warmest wishes to everyone for a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year in advance. May this season be filled with joy, laughter, and the spirit of togetherness!

Highlights from our Postgraduate Research Colloquium on Thesis Publication

In a quest to demystify the intricate process of thesis publication, our postgraduate research students gathered on 29 November 2023 for a dynamic colloquium centred around the theme of getting thesis published. This colloquium delved into the what, why and how of effective thesis publication, aiming to empower our postgraduate research students with the knowledge and confidence as they step into the complex world of academic publishing.

The colloquium, featuring expert speakers and interactive sessions, not only provided valuable insights and networking opportunities but also offered participants with practical strategies to navigate the intricate process of getting their theses published.

Unraveling the world of academic publishing

The renowned aphorism “publish or perish” underscores the significance of publishing in academia, marking a crucial step in the research life cycle. To shed light on the intricacies of this process, Professor Asgar Ali led the first session, offering profound insights into the art of publishing.

Overcoming the fear of writing and publishing

Dr Kasturi Muthoosamy spearheaded the second session, delivering invaluable insights on overcoming the challenges of writing and publishing. This session provided a roadmap for participants to navigate the often-daunting aspects of scholarly writing and publishing.

Learning from experience 

The colloquium also featured a session featuring success stories from our alumna, Dr Hal Mahera Ahmad, and our senior postgraduate research student, Booi Han Ni. They provided insightful details on the ‘what, why, and how’ of their journey, covering the successful publication of research works, including articles and book chapters.

Transforming thesis into published masterpiece

The day proved to be one of enlightenment, collaboration, and the key to unlocking the potential of research. The sessions offered not only valuable insights and practical guidance but also provided a unique opportunity for our postgraduate research students to connect with experts in the field.

A recurring theme throughout the colloquium urged participants not to let their theses gather dust but to view them as cornerstones of academic legacies with a lasting impact. With it, we hope to empower our postgraduate research students to embark on a transformative journey, turning their theses into published masterpieces.

This colloquium stands as a testament to our unwavering commitment to supporting and guiding our postgraduate research students in their pursuit of scholarly excellence.

Introducing our new SA Postgraduate Officer

We are delighted to circulate the announcement of the newly elected Students’ Association (SA) Postgraduate Officer, Hana Soliman Alabiad. Currently a first year Masters student at the Nottingham University Business School (NUBS), Hana brings fresh energy and commitment to her role. At our recent postgraduate Deepavali luncheon on 17 November 2023, Hana shared her enthusiasm and dedication to representing her peers, aiming for the betterment of the postgraduate community at UNM.

‌We at the Graduate School look forward to working with Hana and supporting her in her new role. It was truly heartening to share the joy of the Festival of Lights with our postgraduate community, fostering a sense of togetherness and unity.

Adding to the radiance of the occasion were the esteemed Professor Sarah Metcalfe, our Provost and CEO, and Professor Christopher Gibbins, the Interim Vice Provost for Research and Knowledge Exchange. In their inspiring addresses, both luminaries shared some very encouraging and hopeful messages with our postgraduate students in their roles as outgoing Provost and Vice Provost.

Unveiling the Tri-Campus 3MT^® winner

In a riveting showdown of oratory brilliance and intellectual prowess, the University-wide Three Minute Thesis (3MT^®) competition recently reached its thrilling finale. This tri-campus spectacle brought forth winners from across our three campuses competing for the top honours.

Diret Bitrus Tang’an, representing the UK campus, emerged as the overall winner with his compelling presentation, “Hope for the environment: Microwave heating”. His win secures him the honour of representing the entire University of Nottingham network at the prestigious global U21 3MT^® competition. Here, winning presenters from U21 member universities will compete against one another where they will be judged by an international panel of industry and academic professionals. Don’t miss the chance to support Diret by voting for him in the People’s Choice competition, set to open on 27 November 2023.

‌While we celebrate Diret’s achievement, our accolades continue to shine. Our very own Masyitah binti Zulkipli, cliched the title of runner-up with her captivating presentation, “Malay Ghost Lime: Myth or Hope?”.‌

‌We extend our heartiest congratulations to all the winners from across our tri-campus network for their exceptional performances and their representation of the University. This tri-campus competition serves as a testament to the depth of postgraduate research excellence we nurture at the University.

Embarking on the postgraduate research journey is an exciting yet challenging chapter of academic pursuit. At the Graduate School, we are committed to providing a nurturing and enriching environment for our vibrant postgraduate research community.

Welcome to our vibrant community 

Our recent postgraduate research induction, held on Friday 27 October 2023, was a pivotal platform for us to establish direct and meaningful conversations with our new postgraduate research students. This induction brought together fresh faces and our dedicated Graduate School team. It went beyond its fundamental purpose of acquainting newcomers with postgraduate research life and resources.

We place great importance on cultivating a sense of community among our postgraduate research students. We believe that successful research thrives in an atmosphere of collaboration, inspiration, and support. Our induction was designed to be the first step in introducing this spirit of camaraderie to our new postgraduate research students.

Led by our Associate Dean of Graduate School, Professor Maniam Kaliannan, together with our dedicated Graduate School staff, the induction covered essential topics ranging from academic guidelines to crucial training programs and resources. This ensured a robust foundation for our new postgraduate research students as you begin your research journey. Networking over light refreshments served as an icebreaker, adding to the warm atmosphere of support and welcome.

Your postgraduate voice 

Beyond the informative presentations, we had the privilege of introducing the Students’ Association (SA) and the Postgraduate Students’ Network (PGSN) through an introductory presentation by the outgoing SA Postgraduate Students’ Officer, Muhamad Hishamudin bin Mohmad Hasim.

PGSN serves as the voice of postgraduate students at UNM and is committed to enhancing postgraduate student experience. As an integral part of our close-knit community, PGSN plays a vital role in fostering connections, providing support, and advocating for postgraduate needs.

Hisham’s tenure concludes at the end of this month in October, and the announcement of the newly elected representative will be made in due course. Stay tuned for updates, which will be communicated through PGSN’s social media channels on Facebook and Instagram.

Our induction serves as the beginning of a meaningful relationship with our postgraduate research students. As you commence your postgraduate research journey, the Graduate School will be there as a trusted companion, guide, and source of unwavering support.
