Hi all, so on the 17th of May (yes that was a while ago and yes I am slow in getting this out), the Students of Advanced Maths and Science Society (that’s us) held our Annual General Meeting, with the main intent of electing our new executive committee. Apropos, I would like to introduce your new elected members:

President: Andrew Wong
Vice President: Eden Tanner (nominated in absence)
Treasurer: Allen Kha
Secretary: Laura Baker
Arc Delegate:Navind Jayasooriah
Technology Director: Hieronimus Kava (me!)
Year Representatives:

Fourth Year: Josh Swift

Do note that we are short of a Second Year Representative, so if you’re reading this and you qualify for the spot, please contact one of us! (find us on facebook or something). The spot merely requires that you are enrolled in Advanced Science (or Advanced Maths) at UNSW, are in your second year of study, and you have a bold and adventurous nature.

Okay, so using a meme is sort of sad, but it gets the point across.

It’s that time of year again. We’re having another exciting AGM, where we will have food, drinks and trivia. This is the time where we also recruit students into our executive body, so if you were thinking of joining SAMS, now is your time to shine!

Even if you aren’t thinking of joining the executive committee, we still want to see you all! We want to meet as many new students as possible, and we want you all to meet each other too. Trust us, we’ve been there and done that!

At SAMS we REALLY do LOVE our science, which is why we have you, our lovely members’ interests at heart. Confused about what to do with your degree? Set on a future in research but unsure about how or where to start? Come down to our Career’s Info Night, where we will have scientists and leaders give talks about how they entered science– and you can talk with these people too.

We’re aiming to appeal to the entire cross-section of science students– that is, we want you to meet people who are trained in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics and of course, Psychology.

6PM - 9PM

To our scientific friends!

Thank you all for coming to our events and supporting the society in any means possible. It is an appropriate time now to wish you all a fond farewell, from your delectable Arc Delegate, Laura Baker, the terrific Treasurer, Laura Brown, and your humble Creative Director, me, Andrew Wong.

We will be leaving the country very soon, where we will be over in North America to study in other wonderful universities as exchange students. We are heading off to the University of British Columbia (Canada), McGill University (Canada) and the University of California, Los Angeles (USA) (in the order of names mentioned above). This means we will not be able to fulfil the duties we have once held as students of UNSW.

This is not the end! We will be back next year for some more SAMS fun, and if there are any questions you would like answered, or would like to get in contact with any of us, we can be reached through the ‘Ask’ portal to your right, as well as through email, at UNSWSAMS@gmail.com.

On behalf of the three of us, we wish you all the best in your studies, and will look forward to seeing you again next year.

Rectangles

Rectangles:

Okay, a little late on the scene but if you’ve not heard of UNSW Rectangles, you have been deprived of a massive tool that would have made timetabling a lot easier.

To the uninitiated, Rectangles allows you to generate all possible timetables based off subject code inputs for a given semester. You can then view all prospective timetables according to a parameter that suits your lifestyle- be it days off, no early starts, less time at uni etc. etc.

In a nutshell, use this tool.

This is your fellow scienteer Andrew chiming in to tell you that staying up to study is a BAD idea. This is not helped by the fact this entry is posted at 1AM.

SAMS wishes you all the best in the upcoming exam period. Let it be known these are not exams written by spawns from Stygian hell. Take comfort in the fact that at the end of it all, consumption of a beverage containing modest amounts of ethanol are encouraged and done with peers (and don’t forget, moderation).

The Biggest UNSW Science Get-together:

UNSW science societies SAMS, SMSSOC, MATHSOC, Optometry, PSYCHSOC, GEOSOC and SOCS have come together to host the (1st!) and largest gathering of scientifically (and awesomely) minded folk that UNSW has seen to date.

Join your mates and friendly academics to eat, drink, and be merry down at the Club Bar in the Roundhouse.

Free Foods will be provided (With Vego!) and there are prizes to be won, in a night to wrap up the first semester of studies!

NHMRC Funding

Just wanted to post a message to thank everyone who signed the iPetition. No cuts have been made to NHMRC funding, and is maintained at $850m. This is excellent news for those who are thinking of working in the medical research field.

In the iLecture page, there is a ‘Subscribe to this Podcast’ link. Follow it.

You will be taken to a page with a URL. Copy and paste that URL into a new tab/window.

The page that opens has .mp3 links to all your lectures. Correlate the podcast post to the one you desire to download, right click the respective link and choose the “Save to” option present depending on what browser you use.

Medical Funding in Australia

For those who are unaware, the Australian government is thinking of slashing $400m from the NHMRC in this coming budget. The NHMRC is, of course, the principal medical sciences funding agency for Australian scientists. The $400m cut is to be distributed over a period of 3-4 years, and will impact the direction of medical science research dramatically. There are stories of laboratories nation-wide facing shut-downs or halting projects because they lack the money to perform any research.

Evidently, this will impact all students who are thinking of a career in medical research. Currently, the NHMRC receives ~$700m per annum in funding, which is a tiny amount compared to the money currently spent on health care in Australia. What we need to do is inform the bureaucrats and politicians that we cannot afford to suffer any cuts in funding. You can help by visiting the Discoveries Need Dollars site (below), and contact your local MP, voicing your concerns. The time to act is now.

BAKE SALE!

Future Scientists! We’re having a Bake Sale this Wednesday (the 6th of April), as part of the UNSW Flea Markets initiative. You can find our stall somewhere around the UNSW Roundhouse, and we are open from 11 AM til about 4 PM, so you have ample time and no excuse to visit our stall.

What we have is a huge selection of baked, mostly home-made goods. Bring shrapnel (that is, coinage), as we won’t be selling things over $2. You can also have a piece of cake or a brownie whilst shopping through the markets, which have some pretty interesting stalls.

On a side note, if you want to contribute to our Bake Sale, please send us an emailat asssoc@gmail.com or contact us through our Ask portal to your right, and we will tell you how we can retrieve the goods from you on Wednesday.

Lastly, just a reminder that we have a Movie Night this Friday (8th of April). We’ve confirmed the location (Physics Lawn), the time (5:30 PM), subsidy ($5) and the food (Gourmet Pizzas and Mocktails), so please try to join us! We have a Facebook page dedicated to this event, for you guys to spread the word about our Movie Night to your friends.

Movie Night details:

The movie night is going full steam ahead! It is still on the 8th of April (a Friday). We’ll have a barbecue starting at 5:30PM, followed by an EGM (Extraordinary General Meeting) where we’ll take care of some (brief) societal stuff, followed by the movie night.

The meet up is on the Physics Lawn, and the movies themselves will be hosted within the Rupert Myers’s Theatre, and:

Movie Night!

We’re going to be holding a Movie Night on April the 8th (A Friday)! There will be food, drinks, fun, good company, and of course, movies. We’re not a hundred per cent sure on the details, but clear your calendars and pen in the ASSSoc movie night for the 8th!

Also, as you guys may have heard, we at ASSSoc are looking forward to meeting you all at the Advanced Science camp, this coming Friday.
