Printmaking MFA Alumna Melody Vaughan moved up to Chicago shortly after completing her degree in 2016. She’s been an active member of The Chicago Printmaker’s Collaborative and works at Citizen Brick, a company that prints custom LEGO figures. This past month she bought a litho press and is at the beginning stages of planning a new business doing small classes, publishing, and collaborations. Congratulations, Melody! We invite you to submit your proposals relating to our 2021 theme, MakeReady! The Virtual Event will happen via Zoom; Panels and demos will happen live, and pre-recorded content will also be featured throughout the conference. We welcome spoken word, performance art, and musical performances in addition to printmaking demonstrations, discussions, and more! Help us create a new format for sharing, connecting, and collaborating! The Virtual Event registration is FREE with a Tier 2+ membership.

Please Note:

• Thanks in part to the generosity of our donors, SGCI will be providing modest honorariums for each presenter.
• There will not be a Round 2 Call for Participation; panelists will compile their own panel
• Conference events will be juried by the membership! All Tier 1+ Members will be able to log into MakeReady to vote for the content they want to see!

The symposium will include a keynote address by Miranda Metcalf, founder of the printmaking podcast pine|copper|lime; a plenary presentation by Umberto Giovannini, Director of the Opificio della Rosa, a printmaking studio based in Morciano di Romagna, Italy; and a second plenary presentation on “Playing Cards as Drivers for the Development of Print in Europe,” co-presented by University of Tennessee, Knoxville art history faculty members Kelli Wood and Sean Roberts. We look forward to receiving your proposals.

Students are invited to submit proposals for a variety of symposium events including

· Five panel sessions on a range of topics

· Three virtual printmaking exhibitions curated by students

The Printmaking Program at the University of North Texas seeks applicants for the MFA in Studio Art with concentration in Printmaking.

MFA Application Priority Deadline: February 1, 2021 (for enrolling in Fall 2021).

Graduate Study in Printmaking at the University of North Texas is a broad and intensive experience for artists engaging in traditional and expanded printmaking processes interconnected with all studio disciplines. The printmaking area is a vibrant community of individuals from a variety of artistic and geographic backgrounds. Art faculty serve as mentors for graduate students in developing conceptual, formal, and technical excellence through studio practice, critical dialog, and professional development. Our students also take graduate courses in art history including one specifically oriented in the History of Printmaking taught by Dr. Kelly Donahue-Wallace. Our MFA candidates build experience by participating in exhibitions, portfolio exchanges, printmaking conferences, workshops, collaborations with visiting artists, and other professional activities.

Printmaking Studios and Equipment:
Our new beautifully-lit studios are carefully managed and maintained by our Printmaking Technician. The printmaking studios occupy 5700 square feet divided into a large space for relief, intaglio, monotype, and lithography processes, a space for screen print and artist’s books, a space for letterpress, and ancillary spaces including a darkroom, acid room, screen washout room, spray booth room, and critique spaces. In addition to these community spaces, we have a separate 700 square foot MFAPrintmaking Space. Studio Art graduate students also have additional Private MFA Studio Spaces clustered to foster interdisciplinary dialog, networking, and collaboration. Studio Art Research Resources:
The UNT campus offers professional research resources including exceptional studios and equipment, professional galleries, student galleries, a digital fabrication lab, a textiles digital fabrication lab, the UNT Rare Book Collection, and UNT Elm Fork Natural Heritage Collection of taxidermy specimens. The surrounding Dallas and Fort Worth areas offer world-class art museums including the Dallas Museum of Art, the Trammel Crow Collection of Asian Art, the Nasher Sculpture Center, the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, the Kimbell Art Museum, and the Amon Carter Museum of American Art among many others. The region has a vibrant contemporary art gallery scene that you can begin exploring at Contemporary Art Dealers of Dallas and here at Fort Worth art Dealers Association . There are many other cultural and aesthetic research resources in the area. If you let me know your interests, I can share more specific ideas too.

Teaching Opportunities for Graduate Students:
Our Graduate students have opportunities to gain professional experience while earning a stipend to support their education. The Graduate Teaching Assistantships are available in the CVAD Foundations Program. Graduate Teaching Assistants lead hands-on studio sessions for a section in four foundations Art and Design classes under the direction of a Lead Faculty Member. Non-teaching Assistantships may also be available on a limited basis. Graduate Teaching Fellowships in Printmaking have typically been available in the third year.

The University of North Texas Printmaking area is pleased to announce an exhibition of student work on view in UNT’s Union Art Gallery from Monday, November 16th, 2020 to Thursday, January 7th, 2021. Entitled Side by Side, the show features works that are the culmination of students ’ hard work in the Bachelor of Fine Arts Program of the College of Visual Arts and Design. Come and see a multitude of pieces, ranging from collage work to hand-bound books, traditional prints to three-dimensional installations. Side by Side features pieces made using the printmaking methods of lithography, intaglio, screenprint, monoprint, and relief. Many pieces are a combination of multiple techniques. Print as Object is a group exhibition of artwork that stretches the boundaries of traditional printmaking mediums. The exhibition aims to highlight artists using printmaking as a starting point and pushing beyond the standard editioned print on paper to create sculptures, books, and installations. Below is a statement from the Print as Object guest juror, Shelley Thorstensen, artist, curator, and founder of Printmakers Open Forum:

Congratulations to the organizers of Print as Object. The amount of hard work, persistence and resilience to pull off an exhibit like this now cannot go without recognition. It’s a feat and a triumph. As the juror for this show, I waited with much anticipation. The new and novel Covid-19 swirled around us all and even still, they found a way. It is not surprising – artists are like that; printmakers are especially like that. We are imbued with two loves among many: Persistence and Community. Simply put, printmakers do not give up easily and they stick together.

Print as Object is a show filled with the incongruence of our current lives. It causes a double take – Print. As Object – not installation, but object. Not a window to a world on the wall, but object. It is not lost on one of us that these objects will not, for the most part function in our once normal three-dimensional world. Instead, most of us will experience this show in a venue far from it - on a screen. But within those confines shines a beautiful exhibition, pushing the boundaries of print, working the edges of sustainable practice. It is a proud and humbling moment.
