Canon Fires Back at Patent Infringing Printer Supply Companies

Canon has once again decided to take action against some of the bigger names in the aftermarket printer supply industry. In their complaints, filed with the US District Court for the Southern District of New York and the United States International Trade Commission (USITC) Canon accuses more than 30 companies of violating section 337 of the Tariff Act of 1930.The companiesnamed as proposed respondents in the USITC complaint, filed January 23, 2012are as follows:

When the winter holidays roll around, there’s no flower more ubiquitous than the poinsettia. But the plant, known for its bright red bracts, hasn’t always been so closely associated with the Christmas season in the United States. Curious? Read on for more.

• The Flowers de Noche Buena (Flowers of the Holy Night) wasn’t introduced to the United States until 1825, when Joel Roberts Poinsett, a botanist, physician, and first United States diplomat to Mexico, sent samples back to the United States after a visit to Taxco del Alarcon in Southern Mexico. It has since been known in the United States as the “poinsettia.”

• Prior to its popularity during the Christmas season in the United States, the plant’s association with Christmas originated from 17th century Mexico, when Franciscan priests incorporated the plant into their nativity procession after observing it bloom in the Christmas season.

• Poinsettias were brought to cultural prominence in the United States by Albert Ecke, a German immigrant who left his vegetarian health spa business and settled near Los Angeles in Eagle Rock, CA, where he and his family started an orchard and dairy. He chose to market the poinsettia to large growers as an “off-season cash cow” and called it “The Christmas Flower.” His son, Paul Ecke Jr. took the marketing one step further, by convincing television shows and magazines to prominently display the flower during their Christmas editions.

• The bright red bracts of the plant are often mistaken for flowers, but are actually specialized leaves that serve to attract pollinators. The flowers are actually in the yellow structures at the center of a leaf bunch.

India Hosts 39th Annual World Environment Day

While Earth Day isn’t the only time to take a closer look at our habits and make small changes to benefit the environment, there are other events to remind us of our responsibility to our planet. Since 1972 the United Nations, through the United Nations Environment Programme, has made an effort to raise environmental awareness through their annual World Environment Day, which takes place every June 5.

How Did You Celebrate World Environment Day?

This year’s host country was India, which hosted WED for the first time in the event’s 39 year history. The theme of this year’s event was “Forests: Nature at Your Service,” which focused on the adverse effects of forest degradation and deforestation. India was chosen, partially because of two rare species that reside in the forests within its borders: the Golden Langur Monkey, which has declined in population by 30% in the last 30 years, and the Royal Bengal Tiger, which has decreased in population an astounding 60% in just the last decade.

So, what can we do to help minimize deforestation in countries like India, and in other countries across the globe? If you want to do it through a WED event, you’ll have to put it off for another year, but why wait? -On May 5, 1868, three years after the Civil war ended, Maj. Gen. John A. Logan, the head of an organization of Union Veterans called the Grand Army of the Republic, was the first to declare May 30 as a day to decorate the graves of war veterans. The day was called Decoration Day.

-While the birthplace of the Memorial Day celebration continues to be disputed by a number of cities where most of those who died in the war were buried, the only official declaration took place in 1966, when the United States Congress and President Lyndon Johnson declared Waterloo, N.Y. the holiday's birthplace. The declaration took place almost 100 years after Gen. Logan's "unofficial" declaration.

-Memorial Day was declared an official national holiday in 1971 by the United States Congress. It was set to be celebrated on the last Monday of May.

-On Memorial Day, the American flag is flown at half-mast from sunrise until noon. To honor the nation's troops, the flag is then raised "briskly" to the top of the flag pole until sunset.

-The use of the poppy to serve as a tribute to those who have died for the nation's freedom, especially during Memorial Day and Veterans Day, originated from a poem titled The Flower of Remembrance by World War I Colonel John McCrae, who was a surgeon with the Canadian First Brigade Artillery.

-The image of poppies at Flanders fields described in the poem inspired Anne E. Guerin of France who first sold poppies in the U.S. in 1920 with the help of the American Legion. She enlisted Georgia native Moina Michael in 1922 to aid in the nationwide distribution of the poppies in the U.S. Later that year, the Veterans of Foreign Wars adopted the poppy as its official memorial flower.

Liberia Utilizes Recent Innovations to Cut Down on Illegal Logging

Last month we covered the importance of recycling paper and why we should continue to do so. The bottom line is that like the Environmental Defense Fund states on their site, recycling paper "saves forests," and now, there's at least one more measure being used to prevent worldwide deforestation: bar codes.

While the technology from British company Helveta has been put into use as a way to minimize illegal logging since 2009, the West African country of Liberia has recently signed a deal with the European Union to regulate the country's logging industry, which the country relies on heavily to support its economy. The system will include tagging each legally harvestable tree and each log from these trees with a barcode. The bar codes can then be used to track a tree through every stage of processing, from the time it's cut to the time it arrives at the factory.

Although only time will tell whether or not the system will prove to be effective in minimizing illegal logging and reviving Liberia's economy, what we can do now to minimize the environmental effects of paper production is simply to recycle. Human Motion Lights Up Subways

Potential energy sources are indeed just "under our noses". Kinetic energy, the energy stored in moving bodies or objects, is one perfect example. In fact, some of forms of renewable energy actually use kinetic energy to harness energy from other source. For example, wind turbines make use of kinetic energy to produce energy from the wind. It passes on the kinetic energy from the wind to the turbines to generate power. Some of the tidal and wave energy devices also utilize the kinetic energy of moving water to produce power.

But the mere mention of "kinetic energy" calls to mind human motion.

Yes, human motion can generate electricity. But the development for technologies that can harness electricity from human kinetics are still in the early stages of development. One of the earliest efforts on this is at the Tokyo Station which is one of the busiest train stops in the world. The station has installed Hatsudenyuka tiles. Hatsudenyuka tiles are piezoelectric so these can convert applied strain to electricity. As of now, only trials are underway with the tiles converting the pressure and vibration of human footsteps to electricity that can power the station’s lighting system.

Engineers from the University of Leeds in England are also conducting their own similar experiment but instead of a subway, they utilized the motion of marching soldiers. The English had thought of using marching soldiers to eliminate the errors brought about by variation in people’s walking patterns. With marching soldiers, it is assured that the pressure and vibration are uniform.

The devices used in Leeds are different from those used in Japan as these contain ceramics and crystals. Although they are currently used on roads and pavements, engineers are hoping that these piezoelectric materials will soon be installed in other places like on soldiers’ backpacks or around the knee to keep the weight of the soldiers’ backpacks down since they no longer have to carry extra batteries for their devices.

So far, these piezoelectric technologies are still in their trial stages. There are other technological innovations in the market that can utilize human kinetic power to generate electricity. One good example is Orange, a mobile phone company. It has been testing human kinetic motion charging devices for their phones. The company has recently unveiled their new product: a 180-gram charger which is about the size of a pack of cards. This device is strapped to the biceps of the user so that when the user moves his arms, the action can create electric currents.

By far, the only downside of devices harnessing energy from human kinetics is that the source of kinetic energy is not entirely reliable. Humans have the tendency to get tired and to slow down so this may cause certain variations in the energy supply.

Google Goes Green

Google, the renowned search engine, joins the Go Green bandwagon. Google Inc. contributed to green energy through the development of a new type of mirror technology that can help reduce the cost of building solar thermal plants by as much as 50%.

Bill Weihl, Google's Green Energy Officer, has told Reuters about this latest development. If the pilot testing for the new solar energy mirror goes well, Google will proceed with its rollout in about one to three years. The company is currently coordinating with the developers of solar energy mirror in exploring materials that can be used as reflective surface and as substrate on which the mirror will be mounted. As of now, the developers were able to create an internal prototype.

The solar energy mirror will be used to improve the solar energy capacity of solar panels. It will focus the sun's rays on a heated substance that will, in turn, produce steam. The steam will be used to power facilities and equipment like turbines to generate electricity.

Google has long been investing in studies that can produce more affordable innovations for green energy. For the solar energy mirror project, America's top search engine aims to deviate from the costs of producing heliostats, a field of mirrors used to track and capture the sun's rays.

Indeed, more and more companies are now going green amidst issues on global warming and climate change. Lee’s creation, the Stardust lamp, which integrates crystallized sugar into its design, made its debut at the 50th annual Milan Furniture Fair this past April. The lamp was the culmination of a two-semester project where the South Korean born Lee explored the potential uses of sugar in everyday design.
