Dear UUCL Family and Friends,

An exciting holiday weekend is in store for UUCL! Tonight is the second week of the new Mind & Body Wellness activity and it will be Wii Yoga. Very beginner friendly and not just for UUCL members, so share the invitation to join the fun at 6pm in the Sanctuary.

Our Earth Day Commitment

At the April 16 service we recognized Earth Day and the importance ofclean water. We all need to do what we can to preserve our water. Atthat sermon we asked congregants to do something to save water for 40days or do something bigger to save water within the next 40 days. If40 people or 40% of our average attendance participates in this wewill be recognized by the UU Ministry for Earth. Deadline for Tommie Award Nominees is April 22, 2011

Each year since 1972 our congregation has presented the “Tommie Award” to a deserving local person or group that has done exemplary work to promote social justice. Past recipients have included UUCL members Bill and Merce Fox (1995), the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (2010), Planned Parenthood of Central Florida (1981), Harold Silas of the Lakeland NAACP (2007) and Carl Reed (2006).

The process begins with nominations from members of the congregation. Please submit nominations to Peter Helwig at pfhelwig@tampabay.rr.com by April 22.

DearDistrict Presidents and Clergy:

Assome of you may have heard, representatives of Unitarian Universalismhave been invited by Haitian national Pastor Guy Henry to travelto Haiti toexplore his desire to establisha voice of free religion inhis hometown of Leogane. Pastor Henry has a 200-memberindependent, non-denominational congregation with school that isoperating despite the setback from last year’s earthquake. Heis enthusiastic about our faith, and excited about establishing arelationship with us.

Preparationsfor this project have taken up the better part of the past ninemonths. We have been in contact with Rev. Eric Cherry in theUUA’s Office of International Resources, Rev. Jill McAllisterof the International Council of Unitarian Universalists (ICUU), andWendy Flick of the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee(UUSC). From these institutions we have soughtadvice and counsel on proven tools for assessing viability ofemerging congregations. Representatives from the UUSC havevisited Pastor Henry in Leogane, and it is on the strength of thisUUSC report that we undertake the next step of sending a team of twopeople to Leogane. We need your help to fund the trip.

Thecost for this trip is approximately $2,000.While in Haiti the two-person team will begin to develop a personalrelationship with Pastor Henry, accepting home hospitality andlistening to his – and his congregation’s – hopes for theircommunity. The team will also be talking with the parents ofthe school children and businesses and agencies in his neighborhood.The visit will culminate in a Unitarian Universalist church serviceconducted jointly by Pastor Henry and Rev. Dr. Bonnie Devlin in bothKreole and English, followed by a shared meal. The team willalso be listening for other ways in which Unitarian Universalistsmight assist Pastor Henry’s desire to establish a liberal religiousvoice in Haiti.

Theinitial team consists of Rev. Dr. Bonnie Devlin, UnitarianUniversalist minister of the Manatee Unitarian UniversalistFellowship and Nelson Hay, member of the Unitarian UniversalistCongregation of Venice. Rev. Devlin is a musician andethnographer with deep family roots in the Haitian culture.Nelson Hay, a citizen of the neighboring Turks & Caicos Islands,has a career in international project development and was co-directorof the Salt Cay Methodist Church Restoration.

TheUUA Florida District has set up an account to collect and monitordonations. Progress reports will be made directly to donors andthrough the District website. The Qingming Festival is an opportunity for celebrants to remember and honour their ancestors at grave sites. Young and old pray before the ancestors, sweep the tombs and offer food, tea, wine, chopsticks, joss paper accessories, and/or libations to the ancestors. The rites have a long tradition in Asia, especially among farmers.

On Qingming people go on family outings, start the spring plowing, sing, dance. Qingming is also the time when young couples start courting. Another popular thing to do is to fly kites in the shapes of animals or characters from Chinese opera. Another common practice is to carry flowers instead of burning paper, incense or firecrackers.

It's already April 1st and that means First Friday! This month our table will be staffed with volunteers from the Tuesday Night Chalice Circle, stop by and visit with them and see how easy it is to volunteer! Serve the community and spread the word about UUCL! Win-win!

Voting members should have all received the formal announcement for the Annual Meeting of the Congregation Sunday April 10th. It was accompanied by a lengthy information packet. If you have any questions about the meeting packet, or about the Annual Meeting process please plan to attend the Information Session after service Sunday April 3. Board members Rafi Ellis and Tracie Welser will lead a session to help you find answers.

If you have questions about your voting membership status, especially if you think you are a voting member but did not receive a packet, contact Joyce Bode or Eileen Scheffel. This email is a little later than usual this week as I've been busy preparing for our Annual Meeting on Sunday April 10th right after service. If you are a voting member you will receive an officialmeeting announcement and information packet this week, eitherSunday at service or by mail early in the week. This Sunday , in addition to our usual Worship Service with Rev Marni, we have the privilege of a workshop on Generative Communication. She says:

What is Generative Conversation? One that creates connectedness and results.
Why should you come? UUCl needs leaders who understand that leadership lives in our conversations with one another.

Some things you will learn:

• How not to have a generative conversation.
• Why a fierce conversation just might be good.
• Ingredients of a good and successful conversation
• What we mean by generative listening

Rev. Marni will be leading this miniworkshop and hopes that many UUClers will take this opportunity to spend a little time talking about what makes for good and life-giving communication. We’ll begin right after the four ministry teams have finished. Please bring a bag lunch.

On Thursday, March 31 you will see a new item calledCommunity Team Activity. By request and on behalf of the Community Team, Eileen Scheffel and Aika Sumeragi hope to offer us a weekly relaxation activity, initially either Wii yoga or meditation, alternately.

Japan Relief Fund

Dear Friends and Member of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Lakeland,

I share with you a letter from UUA President Peter Morales:

As the news from Japan worsens, I send my heartfelt sympathies to all those struggling to cope with this terrible disaster.

As the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) president, I traveled to Japan last August to meet with our religious partners there. The warm hospitality offered to my wife, Phyllis, and me left us with a beautiful and lasting impression of their country and culture. My heart goes out to the people of Japan for what they are enduring now.

As soon as the UUA received word of the tragedies of Friday, March 11, we reached out to our religious partners in Japan: Rissho Kosei-kai, Tsubaki Grand Shrine, the Konko Church of Izuo, the Tokyo Dojin Church, and the Japan Chapter of the International Association for Religious Freedom. We have worked in close partnership with these outstanding organizations for many decades, and have been in contact with them since Friday. I can only imagine the overwhelming sadness and fear they are experiencing, even as they try to determine their next steps.

To this end, the UUA/Unitarian Universalist Service Committee (UUSC) Japan Relief Fund has been established to support the recovery efforts of our religious partners in Japan, as they consider the specific efforts to take to support the work of recovery. I encourage anyone wishing to contribute to this crucial effort to
read more about the UUA/UUSC Japan Relief Fund here.

For several months, the Rev. Eric Cherry, the UUA's Director of International Resources, has had a trip to Japan scheduled for later this month. The situation on the ground is still extremely volatile, but as I write this, Eric intends to make the trip if at all possible. If he is able to make the journey, he will convey my sincere condolences and profound hope for swift recovery on behalf of the entire Unitarian Universalist Association.

We at the UUA will hold the country of Japan in our hearts, as we work to support them in their time of great need.

This Saturday is the night for the monthly gathering of the Circle of Rhythm. Join this lively group of drummers and dancers for an evening celebrating rhythm and movement.

Sunday morning the talents of Brook McGinnis and Heather Curry come together to bring us our monthly multi-generational service that is intended for all ages. Come and learn aboutUnitarian Frank Lloyd Wright!

Our Stewardship Team reminds you to please return your annual pledge card if you have not already done so. All pledging members will have the right to vote at the upcoming Annual Meeting, Sunday April 10th. Please set aside this date!

Why should you come? UUCl needs leaders who understand that leadership lives in our conversations with one another.

• How not to have a generative conversation.

• What we mean by generative listening

Rev. Marni will be leading this miniworkshop and hopes that many UUClers will take this opportunity to spend a little time talking about what makes for good and life-giving communication. We’ll begin right after the four ministry teams have finished. Please bring a bag lunch.

2pm EarthFamilies (SH) Creating the EarthFamilies CUUPS Banner Back in early February 2010 EarthFamilies came together to choose a design for our official banner. Well, many months and many changes have happened since then and now we're coming together again to finalize those well laid plans and finish our banner in time for FPG (Florida Pagan Gathering)!

Fabric and some supplies will be provided (though we could always use some extra scissors or any other tools as well as any love offerings to help cover expenses) so come join us for a fun day of crafts and community!

Religious Exploration

The children have been working hard this month for the UUsC’s Hope in Crops project! They have learned about the Kenyan people, their environment, the problems they are facing, and the solutions they are implementing. They have been learning about our Florida environment as well and have started a garden based on the native american “Three Sisters” tradition. all of their activities have been photo-documented by Sue Bowers so that we may create a scrapbook to send to Kenya. In addition, they have started to design a t-shirt for our congregation that we will sell to raise funds for the Hope in Crops project. They are very excited about this project, so feel free to ask them about Kenya or the RE “Three Sisters” garden.

In March, our younger children, led by Melissa Marshall, will continue on their “spirit of adventure” as they learn about UU builders. Join us for our March intergenerational service and find out who! Our older children, led by Deirdre Daniel, will explore peace as an important UU value — she has some wonderful lessons planned for them! Remember, you are always welcome to join us on Sunday mornings at 10 a.m. They would love to share their experiences with you.

A message from our Minister, Rev. Dr. Marni P. Harmony

I share these words from the 19th century Unitarian minister Henry Whitney Bellows: "Some have carelessly imagined that the affections of the heart, the light of conscience, the native sensibilities, were to be ignored by science; but when we are studying what concerns the heart, science will compel us to take the heart itself into counsel as the chief witness. To study theology without faith is a vain effort. To pursue religion in an irreligious spirit is futile."

The root of the word RELIGION means "to bind together." Our religion asks us to come together, to bind ourselves to one another, in the search for meaning. Other views of religion suggest subscription to a specific set of beliefs and behaviors such as building an altar of stone, sacrificing animals or human beings, observing dietary laws, praying in a particular direction at various times of the day, or conforming to other standards of dress or action, law or relation. Yet another view of religion suggests that it is about something that happened in the past; thus becoming an attachment to dead things while sacrificing living realities.

Our religion is alive in the present. Religion for us most often involves a journey. It is a Holy Quest. It’s the human spirit longing for and looking for something infinitely greater than self, using the fullness of heart, mind, and soul. It starts with our hunger. It starts with our response to others and to the world around us — the lump in our throat, a tear in our eye, the surge and leap of our heart. "O world, I cannot hold thee close enough," wrote Edna St. Vincent Millay. Or Tennyson, "Flower in the crannied wall... if I could understand what you are, root and all, and all in all, I should know what God... is." It is Moses in front of a burning bush or Jesus up to his knees in the Jordan River or the Buddha beholding death and decay for the first time. It is any one of us looking at the faces of famished children or Haitian earthquake survivors or refugees or the families of murder victims. It surges when we see the courageous souls defiantly witnessing for freedom in Egypt, Tunisia, Libya, Bahrain and no doubt other countries by the time this column is published. Our religion gets life when we look into both the pain and the joy on the faces of those around us. That is where religion starts. All the other stuff — the furniture of religion — the dogma and ritual and scripture and institution — it all comes later.

My wish is simply that you will have "binding" moments that continue to deepen your commitment to our faith tradition and all that gives life to this Beloved Community.

Join UUCL's EarthFamilies' chapter of the Covenant of Unitarian Universalist Pagans (CUUPS) as we explore Divinations past, present, and future, as well as different models, tools, and theories concerning this ubiquitous and ancient human tradition.

Dr. Bill Schulz, for 12 years executive director of Amnesty International USA and now head of the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee, will deliver a public lecture entitled “Do Human Rights have a Future?”

A highly recognized advocate of human rights around the world, Dr. Schulz has served in many roles. He is the author of two books on human rights, and currently serves or has served as a consultant to a variety of foundations, including the MacArthur Foundation, UN Foundation, Kellogg Foundation, and Humanity United of the Omidyar Network.

Schulz is an Adjunct Professor of Public Administration at New York University’s Wagner School of Public Service and an Affiliated Professor at Meadville Lombard Theological School at the University of Chicago.

In 2002, the New York Review of Books said, “(Schulz) has done more than anyone in the American human rights movement to make human rights issues known in the United States."

A Benefit Appearance: Event proceeds and donations will benefit two international human rights organizations, one in Afghanistan, the other in Haiti. In Afghanistan, Barakat seeks to expand opportunities for girls and women in Afghanistan through schools and literacy programs and women’s empowerment programs. In Haiti, Camp Oasis provides safe, supervised housing for 40 girls aged 14-19 who were orphaned by the earthquake. A similar program is projected for boys.

We will provide:

Bed and Breakfast stays for one or more nights between April 1- May 1, with members and friends of the church. Costs will be $40 single, $70 double, $10 per extra person. Pay your host for the nights you stay (Checks payable to TVUUC).
Breakfast and visit time with UU friends in Knoxville.
Opportunities to explore the wonderful diversity of local activities, wildflowers, plants and wildlife in and around the Smokies–and in some other less well-known but spectacular spots that are not so crowded with spring visitors!

You will provide:

Transportation to and from Knoxville and ground transportation while here.
Meals other than breakfast
Pre-registration for any programs you wish to attend.
Admission to any events for which there is a charge.

Another exciting weekend is coming for UUCL! If you have time this evening our former Buddhist group is reconstituting as an Asian Religions Study Group in the home of members Adam and Ishiuan Hargrove.

Saturday morning you can help beautify your spiritual home. Come join Stewardship Team Leader Judi Irwin for a campus workday! Fixing, cleaning, sprucing the place up, come with your favorite supplies and tools. Hate to clean? Contact Judi about helping feed these folks!

Saturday evening brings the monthly gathering of the Circle of Rhythm. Drum, dance, or whatever you like to do, come celebrate rhythm with this lively group that now call UUCL home.

Sunday morning offers our usual educational offering for children and adults (Discussion topic: Will the economy recover in 2011?), and worship service brings us a special treat as we are joined by one of our favorite Unitarian Universalists, singer songwriter Mindy Simmons. Using smoke to send prayers out to the gods is one of the oldest known forms of ceremony and you can make your own quite easily. Supplies and tools will be provided and a donation of at least $5 per person is requested to cover cost of supplies. So join us as we express our 'Craftier' side and come make your own incense!

2pm EarthFamilies (SA) Garden: Soil Turning/Garden Preparation The EarthFamilies Garden is back and under new guidance! As EarthFamilies CUUPS service to UUCL, our host congregation, we will be renovating one of the campus's flowerbeds as an herb garden. Planned as a two weekend event, this first weekend we will be clearing out what's there now and preparing the soil for the next week's planting. So come out and lend a hand as we do our part to beautify the campus and, in turn, help to extend its beauty to the wider world.

5pm Grace Redemption Fellowship (SA)

One of our important fundraisers is coming up: March 3-6 is the Florida Jets Model Airplane Show at the Lakeland Lindor Airport (http://www.franktiano.com/FljetsFrameset.htm). An exciting weekend ahead at UUCL! Friday night is UUCL's Annual Dinner to kick of our annual fundraising campaign, "gimme five!" If you reserved a seat I hope to see you there!

Saturday at 8pm is another great opportunity to hear live music, with Mad Agnes performing for the latest in the Friends of Joe not-for-profit concert series, see more details below.

Tomorrow is First Friday and they expect this one to be really big. The theme is Motorcycle Madness and they have 70 vendors signed up. We will be set up in the park, near the corner of Maine and Kentucky, behind the radio station and the DLP booths. . This is one of our most effective Outreach activities, so please come help out; we especially need coverage from 7 to 8:15 pm

The former Buddhist Study Group has evolved into an Asian Religions Study Group,meeting at the home of Adam Hargrove. The next meeting is Feb 17th, contact Adam (AdamHargrove@yahoo.com) for details.

Bring your offerings for Guest at Your Table!

Dear UUCL Family and Friends,

Many of you were present in November when we shared the message about the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee's "Guest at Your Table" (GAYT) program and passed out boxes for use in your homes as a way to practice generosity and gratitude.

This post is to remind you that tomorrow is the collection day for the Guest at Your Table boxes/checks (remember, we would much prefer a check made out to UUSC than a box full of change!). Peter Helwig will be taking up the collection during tomorrow's service with Rev. Marni.

Even if you didn't get a box and collect coins over the weeks, you can still participate. Please, go now, and write your check and put it where you won't forget it tomorrow morning, because this is too important for us to forget.

Many of you have already attended a Ministry Sunday Team Meeting or joined a Task Force over the last few weeks. If you have, then you already know how rewarding it is to help make UUCL function. Come see what the new Stewardship, Community, Outreach, and Worship & Education Teams are all about, and learn how you can get involved. Remember, involvement comes in all shapes, sizes and commitment levels! Snacks will be provided.

However, as with the onset of all new things we often wonder, "What does this new year hold in store for me?" Enter Divination! An age old practice seen in nearly every culture in thousands of different forms, the art of fortune telling has always intrigued mankind. Join UUCL's EarthFamilies chapter of the Covenant of Unitarian Universalist Pagans (CUUPS) as we explore Divination's past, present, and future as well as different models, tools, and theories concerning this ubiquitous and ancient human tradition.

Martin Luther King Jr Parade Saturday

Dear UUCL Family and Friends,

A long standing UUCL tradition will continue this Saturday with our participation in the Martin Luther King Jr. Parade. This year marching near us will be the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW), who participated for the first time last year at our invitation.

Unlike past years, we will not be carpooling from UUCL. Meet us at the parade grounds, located at 14th St. and Kathleen, at 11am. You should see people directing traffic and you will need to park in a parking lot near the entrance. Walk across the field and look for us at site #26. CIW will be site #21, stop by and say hi!

We will have a red van for those who cannot walk the parade route and we will shuttle people from the end of the parade route back to the parking lot, so you won't have to walk back!"

PLEASE bring small wrapped candy to hand out to the kids! We never have enough candy so if you cannot make the parade but would like to donate, please leave the candy in the kitchen at the UU before Saturday morning.

Outreach Team Leader Laura Wampfler (813-759-8934 or rian90@tampabay.rr.com) says "Hope to see many of you there! The parade has always been a great experience for the participants and the people love to see us!".

If you have considered becoming a member of UUCL, please plan to stay after worship next Sunday, January 23, to participate in one of the four ministry group meetings, and then attend our New Member class. It will be held from 1:30 until around 4:30. We’ll cover a bit of UU history, some conversation about covenant and the meaning of membership, and learn about the structure of UUCL. Please let Eileen Scheffel know if you plan to attend.

Dear UUCL Family and Friends,

It is First Friday this week! This month our theme is Martin Luther King Day, in support of our tradition of marching in the MLK Parade, which will be Sat Jan 15th at 1pm in Downtown Lakeland. First Friday is a big part of our Outreach Ministry, but we need your help. The existing team is wearing down and would like to do just the even numbered months. If you would be willing to be part of a Team for the odd-numbered months contact Peter Helwig and Laura Wampfler from the Outreach Team. Even if you aren't signing on to run the booth, be sure to come out and show your support!

Then, afterward, you can come to UUCL and finish out the evening with Jack Williams at the 7:30pm Friends of Joe not-for-profit concert series. These evenings are wonderful opportunities to enjoy live, original music in our wonderfully intimate sanctuary.

Sunday Rev Marni continues her sermon series "What do UU's believe about..." with "What Do UU's Believe About the Bible?" Don't miss this wonderful opportunity to share a reading from our collective UUCL wisdom.

Invitations for the Feb 11th Annual Dinner are being distributed to members. As of this writing, my husband Duke is now off the ventilator, out of the Intensive Care Unit and expected to be discharged tomorrow, though he will need home nursing and physical therapy for a while. His sister will be coming to stay with him Sunday so that I might join you all once again.

Dear UUCL Family and Friends,

Work continues during this holiday season so I remind everyone that today was the deadline for the Beacon newsletter, but, because of the holidays, if you send things before Monday you won't be too late.

Tomorrow, December 24, we honor our Christian roots with a Christmas Eve Service at 7pm, but you'll want to join the Soup and Sandwich Supper at 6pm. RSVP to Rafi Ellis or Jean Lord for supper.

Sunday we'll continue our exploration of our holiday observances at the 11am Worship Service, as I lead a panel of members who will share favorite holiday memories and why they are important.

This Sunday is also Ministry Sunday, when the Teams (Outreach, Stewardship, Community and Worship & Education) that strive to meet our mission will meet after service to continue with work that won't wait till after the holidays. Be sure to bring a brown bag lunch so you can stay to help!

At 2pm EarthFamilies will be showing the movie "The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus", a pagan take on Santa based on a story by L Frank Baum (author of The Wizard of Oz) and produced by Rankin and Bass, makers of the holiday claymation classic “Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer”.

So bring a lunch and make a day of it: worship, work and play!

Many Ways to Celebrate the Holiday Seasone

Dear UUCL Family and Friends,

There are several ways to celebrate the holiday season at UUCL. Saturday night our guests, Circle of Rhythm, will be drumming and the Tin Can Gypzees, who entertained us at Halloween and the Yule Ball, join them to dance.

For something more thought provoking, on Sunday morning the Adult Discussion Group and Rev Marni will be examining different aspects of how we observe Christmas.

For a sure good time, everyone is invited to attend a Solstice Party for all ages sponsored by our YoUUth group on Wednesday evening, Dec 22. Attendees are invited to wear their best pajamas and a holiday potluck item to share.

For the traditional, next Friday will be our annual Christmas Eve Soup and Sandwich Supper, followed by a service honoring the Biblical story of Christmas.

Mixed in with all this is some work! Don't forget the Beacon Deadline next Thursday December 23^rd, send your articles to editor Eileen Scheffel in rtf format. Then next Sunday Dec 26th is Ministry Sunday, when the Teams meet that lead the work of the congregation. Bring a brown bag lunch, this is a great time to eat some of those holiday leftovers!

Potluck and Other Holiday Fun!

Dear UUCL Family and Friends,

A big thanks to all who worked so hard to make UUCL's portrayal of Unitarian Charles Dickens "A Christmas Carol" at the Lakeland Christmas Parade last week a big success. See a little video by clicking here

Please be sure to bring your unwrapped toys and food for our holiday giving drive to help Basic Needs of Life, which supports children with AIDS and their families. This weekend will be your last chance to add to the boxes at the back of the Sanctuary!

This Sunday Rev Marni will join us for the next in her sermon series "What do UU's Think About...." She’ll be sharing her thoughts on why Jesus would have made a pretty darn good Unitarian Universalist! In fact, she’d argue that if he were alive today, he’d be a UU. Come and enjoy the collective reading created out of our responses regarding what Jesus means.

That will be followed by our monthly potluck: let's make it a celebration and bring holiday favorites to share, and don't forget to think 'green' and bring your own place setting.

Outreach Team Liaison and Trustee Peter Helwig shared some more good news for the Coalition of Immokalee Workers, a cause long supported by members of UUCL, get details by clicking here.

A happy update on the Coalition of Immokalee Workers

Trustee and Outreach Liaison Peter Helwig says:

The e-mail below from Brigitte, Jordan and Margaret of Interfaith Action summarizes some of the successful efforts of the Coalition of Immokalee Workers in the last few weeks, and lists some ways that people can continue to participate in the work. Brigitte and Margaret broke bread with us at UUCL when we gave a dinner in their honor during the Publix campaign last Spring, and Jordan was at UUCL for Social Concerns Sunday last June. I expect they’ll be back when the Publix campaign gears up in the coming months.

Dear friends,

The New York Times celebrated the CIW's agreement with the Florida Tomato Growers Exchange with an editorial in today's paper. Here's an excerpt:

"Fair trade is finally coming to the tomato fields of Florida, where farmworkers have won a remarkable victory in a 15-year struggle for better pay and working conditions. Last month, they struck a deal with growers to raise workers’ pay and to create an industry code of conduct, a health and safety program and a system to resolve worker complaints."

The New York Times editorial comes on the heels of the CBS Evening News broadcast of "Harvest of Shame Revisited." Fifty years after Edward R. Murrow's original broadcast of Harvest of Shame, CBS returned to Immokalee and highlighted the changes taking place through the CIW's Campaign for Fair Food. The 5-minute program is available for viewing on the CBS website; watch it by clicking here. (Note that there is a commercial first.)

Nevertheless, there is still much work to be done. As the New York Times editorial notes, "The supermarket chains — except for Whole Foods — are still refusing to participate." As we call on the supermarket industry to join in paying an additional penny per pound and supporting the code of conduct, there are many ways you can help. Mark your calendars to join us on March 5th in Tampa for the culmination of the 2011 Supermarket Truth Tour. We also need a few volunteers from January to March 9th to help plan for these events-- if you or someone you know are interested, let us know and find more details here.

Parade Tonight!

Dear UUCL Family and Friends,

TONIGHT! 7:00 pm! UUCL makes it's debut appearance in the Lakeland Christmas Parade in Downtown Lakeland! Come see Scrooge, the Cratchits and the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future as we share Unitarian Charles Dickens “A Christmas Carol” with our community!

On Sunday some of these characters will join us for what is sure to be a memorable service celebrating our Unitarian Universalist connections to Christmas.

In the same spirit of the season, don't forget to bring food and unwrapped toys for the families of children with AIDS; there's a box in the back of the sanctuary.

Do you have a favorite winter holiday memory? Why is it important to you? Would you like to share with the congregation? Sunday December 26th will be a panel of members sharing holiday memories. To be considered for the panel please contact me.

The Chalice Circles forming for January are still wait-listing interested members, except for space in the East Polk Circle. If you want one now!, or if you want to find out what it's all about, there will be an Open Session on Sunday at 12:30pm. Space is limited, contact Tracie Welser or Janet Stevens.

Community Team Liaison Eileen Scheffel has been working with the High Street Church (UU Macon, GA) to create safe places for UU's to evacuate to in case of hurricane. They want to grow a broad program for Central Florida UU's, starting with us. High Street can't serve if we aren't willing to be served, so if you need a place to go, and/or a way to get there if we have a hurricane, please fill out an Evacuation Form and return it to the box in the hall. Dear UUCL Family and Friends,

Here's hoping you shared a day of abundance and gratitude yesterday. It was a lovely occasion for the 20 of us who shared in UUCL's Thanksgiving Potluck. Thanks to all for a great holiday!

If you want to share that holiday gratitude, you can do it in the form of toys and food for the families of children with AIDS; there is a box in the back of the sanctuary.

The planned Chalice Circles to meet at UUCL are full, but you can be added to a waiting list in case space opens up. There are also still spaces open for the East Polk Circle. We'll also be offering some Open Sessions as well, the first will be Sunday December 5 at 12:30pm, contact Tracie Welser or Faye Moore. (Space is limited.)

Our Library Ladies say there has been a lot more book borrowing than returning and remind you to please give others the opportunity to use the resources by returning them promptly when you are finished with them.

Even though it's the holiday weekend there are still things to do at UUCL, and next week is full of excitement, so plan ahead!

Dear UUCL Family and Friends,

Earlier this week you should have received a special email about Chalice Circles, a special new program to help make us a stronger faith community through deep sharing. Be sure to sign up Sunday. If you are interested, but none of the times work for you, or if you can't make it Sunday, please contact coordinator Janet Stevens jstevens@tampabay.rr.com

The Outreach Team says the box which we will use to collect toys and non-perishable foods for children with AIDS and their families should be in place this week. Please be generous and leave your new, unwrapped toys, as well as any food gifts in the box.

It's not too late to join the group of parents and children camping at All World Acres, near Plant City this Friday and Saturday. The purpose is a meeting Saturday afternoon to discuss planning an Earth Scouts group, but everyone, including members of the congregation who do not have children, is invited either for the camping or for the day on Saturday, including a potluck Saturday evening. Hello UUCL Friends and Family,

It's many folks' favorite week at UUCL: Potluck Sunday! Be sure to bring your place setting, of course something yummy to share and don't forget to help clean up after!

On the subject of food, at noon Thanksgiving Day UUCL will host it's Fourth Annual Thanksgiving Potluck. Turkey will be provided, bring a favorite holiday dish to share, or beverages and such if you don't cook. This Thanksgiving celebration is open to anyone, not just members, so please invite anyone needing a place to share. Both those planning to attend and those willing to help should contact Theresa at President@uuclakeland.org (RSVP requested)

On the weekend of November 19th, a group of parents and children will be camping at All World Acres, near Plant City. We will be camping on both Friday and Saturday night and plan to have a group dinner/potluck on Saturday evening. On that Saturday afternoon, we will have an organizational meeting to discuss starting an Earth Scouts group in the Lakeland area. Please try to attend the meeting if you are interested in Earth Scouts, even if you cannot stay for the night. Oh what fun we had at the UNICEF fundraiser! Deep thanks to all who helped make the evening a success. I don't mean to leave anyone out, but a very special thanks to the event co-ordinator, Heather Curry, and to BBQ co-ordinator Cynthia Patterson.

This week is First Friday, so be sure to join us in Downtown Lakeland. Come out and help us let folks know we're here, or help with the kid's craft. This month, to teach about gratitude in honor of Thanksgiving, the kids will be making Thank You cards for someone who they feel grateful to.

The Coalition of Immokalee Workers traveling Slavery Museum is in Lakeland right now, tonight 6-9pm for a program on immigration at Westminster Presbyterian at 703 South Florida Avenue. I'm so excited! It's finally here! This Saturday, October 30, at 6pm the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Lakeland will host a Halloween BBQ and Festival for UNICEF.

With music, free-range and vegetarian BBQ options, a costume contest for all ages, a bring-your-own decorated pumpkin contest, a Haunted Game Room for kids. belly dancers and a late night cabaret at 9pm, there's something for everyone! I've attached the flyer again, in case you have opportunity to distribute or post some.

The Beacon newsletter has a new editor, Board Member Eileen Scheffel. Please send your articles to her(in rtf format if possible) by Saturday October 23. Our thanks to retiring editor Rafi Ellis, to Eileen of course, and to Alex McMenemy who has been faithfully formatting the Beacon to make it easy to both read and access online.

This Sunday there will be a meeting of the new Stewardship Team. This Team will be helping us make sure that we protect and grow our assets. Stewardship includes a lot of different needs: bookkeeping, accounting, budgeting, fund-raising, special event planning, Annual Dinner preparation, entertainment, caring for our buildings and grounds (after our members, our greatest asset!), “green” knowledge, and others. And last, but not least, friends of UUCL who are interested in learning about the privileges and responsibilities of membership should plan to attend the Path to Membership Class on Saturday Nov 6th from 2pm-5pm. This class, led by Rev Marni Harmony, is required before becoming a member of UUCL. The class is free, but pre-registration is required and attendees must attend the full three hours. Hello UUCL Family and Friends!

I hope you have all been enjoying the return of cooler weather; it makes it hard for me to work, I want to lie in my hammock all afternoon!

This Sunday after service is our monthly potluck and we are also having a Town Hall Meeting at 12:30pm. The meeting is your chance to let the Board know your feelings about the opportunity for UUCL to offer prayer at/before the City Commission meeting. This is an important question since the Atheists of Florida are suing to stop this practice.

In order to make it easier to do potluck and the meeting please bring a potluck dish that is easy to serve, eat and clean up, as well as your own place setting.

Thanks to everyone who is volunteering today through Saturday at the Monster Planes Fundraiser! Your willingness to use Volunteerspot made it such an easy task to fill out the schedule, Heather and the Stewardship Team both offer their gratitude.

And don't miss another chance to support live music with the Saturday Friends of Joe Concert at 8pm! This is always high quality music from passionate performers!

My Dear UUCL Family and Friends,

So much to share this week! Most important is that the new issue of the Beacon newsletter is now available at http://www.uuclakeland.org/docs/newsletter/2010-09-newsletter.pdf Updates on and details of many activities can be found there.

We continue to move towards implementation of a Small Group Ministry program with an Open Session on Saturday September 11 from 2pm – 3:30pm. This will be limited to 12 participants, so pre-registration is required. You can find the sign-up sheet on the table in the hallway. If you attended the sample session in May, please allow others the first chance to sign up.

In preparation for occupancy by our new weekday tenant, Alternatives Unlimited, we have re-keyed the locks. If you have keys, you will need to replace them. Contact Facilities Use Coordinator Joyce Bode or volunteer Administrator Eileen Scheffel to make arrangements.

If you were at service last week, you know the air conditioner must be replaced. This has necessitated spending all of our Capital Expense funds plus. Your gifts for the replenishment of this fund are welcome. If you can help, write “Capital Expense” on the memo line and drop a check in the mail or the Sunday basket.

This Friday is downtown Lakeland's First Friday event. The theme is “Back to School” so our efforts will be emphasizing our RE program. Director of Religious Exploration Heather Curry has generously offered to bake heart and chalice-shaped cookies for our free project and we'll have icing for kids to decorate them with. Stop by our tent on Kentucky Ave, across from Harry's to help out or just join in the fun and fellowship.

Hurricane Prep and Religious Exploration

As tropical depressions spin towards us across the Atlantic you will be glad to know that UUCL, in partnership with High Street UU Church in Macon, GA, will be the pilot congregation for a Hurricane Relief Initiative that will allow at-risk members to pair with Macon households for evacuation in the event of a major storm. It's great to have other UU families looking out for us!

No hurricanes to worry about this weekend, so bring the kids for the return of Religious Exploration at 10am. If you have not yet registered your child(ren) please contact DRE Heather Curry. No kids? There's still plenty to do at UUCL.

Hello UUCL Friends and Family!

A very busy weekend awaits the UUCL community, crammed full of opportunities to learn, play, volunteer and share community.

Friday is another Common GroUUnds Coffeehouse, Saturday is full of leadership training and Sunday is the kickoff for the new year for our Religious Exploration program and a special Water Communion service (don't forget your water!). Rather than try to describe it all here, I'll share the wonderful details of each below.

7pm Common GroUUnds Coffeehouse (SA) once again brings free music to the community with Goodnight Neverland, The Shark Destroyer Band and Sun of Sam live in concert. The sale of refreshments funds this and other ventures (like the band for last year's UNICEF fundraiser), so your donations of baked goods are always welcome, contact Daniel Whitt for arrangements.

10am – 4pm District-wide RE Teacher Training (SA, SH, RE) Registration for this event is closed, but you can still volunteer to help out. Music, Theatre and an Opportunity to Serve

Dear Friends and UUCL Family,

That lazy quiet summer I wrote of last week is gone! It sure won't be quiet with Common GroUUnds Coffeehouse bringing us great music Friday and Circle of Rhythm in our facility on Saturday!

But don't stop with music, this weekend we also have theatre! Brook and Dave McGinnis have been working with DRE Heather Curry to bring us the tale of Motzke the fishmonger and his “helpful” friends this Sunday at 11am. You won't want to miss this one!

Participating in Sunday service is a wonderful way to deepen your relationship with UUCL. There are always opportunities to lead A Message for All Ages, share musical gifts, be a moderator or do something fun during a Multigenerational service, but there is a special opportunity upcoming.

Our efforts to become a Green Sanctuary are about how we live, not just what we do here at UUCL. To gain a better understanding of this, on August 1 our 11am Sunday Worship will have a select panel of members offer their views on Living Simply and how it supports their UU values.

But we can't do this without your help. If you would be willing to be considered for the panel or to offer your service in any other way to the Worship Committee give me a call at , we need you!

A Cookout Potluck and More

Dear Friends and UUCL Family,

It's been so nice to have a little break from the rain these last couple of days! For me, summer in Central Florida is the time of hibernation, like winter was when I lived up North. The pace of life slows as our lives adapt around the weather. So, too, our congregational life moves to it's slowest pace of the year.

As a way of celebrating this summertime pace, Jean Lord of the Hospitality Committee has arranged a cookout for us for this Sunday's potluck. Burgers and hotdogs are being provided, bring picnic foods to share, including vegetarian grillables if you prefer.

July 1 starts a new church year, and this letter marks my first official act as the new President of UUCL. You can read more about the other changes in officers in my column, Presidential Ponderings, in The Beacon newsletter, which will be posted later today.

As we begin this year, I extend my personal thanks, as well as the thanks of the congregation, to all of the officers, committee chairs, interest group coordinators and volunteers who serve us. Without their hard work there would be no UUCL. I am looking forward to continuing our work and growth together.

Included in thanks is everyone who will be helping with this Sunday's special holiday service. We are having a Patriotic Hymn Sing, come lend your voice to our songs and fill your ears with the sounds of music.

A Milestone Weekend for Our Congregation

This weekend marks an important milestone for UUCL: The end of our 2009-2010 church year.

It is a time of many transitions for our Congregation -- some bittersweet, but all important in forging ahead to build our Beloved Community.

This Sunday, June 27, we say goodbye to our 2008-2010 Consulting Minister, Rev. E. Bonnie Devlin, who has shepherded us through two turbulent years and helped us rebuild a cohesive, collegial community of supportive seekers. You won't want to miss Sunday's service and the after-party, where Rev. Bonnie will say farewell and we'll express our gratitude for her loving service.

Also on Sunday, we'll give our thanks to this year's Board and Committee leaders and install the new Congregational officers you've elected at our last two Annual Meetings: Board President Theresa Lutz and President-Elect Tracie Welser (although Tracie is away, we'll welcome her in absentia). It's a chance for all of us to say thanks to those who have helped revitalize UUCL over the past year.

Finally, we'll kick off the new church year with a brand-new enrichment opportunity: the Arts and Crafts group. They'll meet every 4th Saturday at 1:00pm to work on arts or crafts and teach other techniques, with the goal of creating a team project for the benefit of UUCL or other causes.

12 p.m.: A Celebration for Rev. Bonnie, Social Hall. Show your gratitude to Rev. Bonni as we fete our departing minister

2 p.m.: EarthFamilies Evensong Gathering, TBA. Meet at UUCL for Pagan Day Out, a chance to enjoy a late lunch off campus.

A time to let go...

As part of our plan towards re-establishing full-time ministry for our congregation, we are following Florida District Executive Rev Kenn Hurto rrecommendation that we contract with at least two interim ministers, for no more than two years each, before calling a settled minister. Sunday June 27th we will celebrate the end of Rev Bonnie's second year under contract with us.

This is a sad time of parting, but there can be no new beginnings without. As you should already know, for our next step in growth we have contracted with Rev Marni Harmony. She is already in contact with our leadership, Rev Bonnie and Rev Kenn to help ensure a smooth transition. We hope everyone will welcome her with love.

Likewise, we hope you will help us create a loving send-off for Rev Bonnie on June 27th. She will lead us in Worship at 11am, followed by a celebration of her time with us. Surprise gifts are in the works, please contact Theresa Lutz for details and donations.

We have gone through amazing changes during her time with us. To paraphrase an old ad "We've come a long way, baby!"

We’re all concerned about the horrible oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, which is threatening our eco-system and devastating the livelihoods of our neighbors throughout the region. Now, Religious Exploration Director Heather Curry has found a way we can help.

The Seabird Sanctuary, a wildlife organization in St. Pete Beach, is collecting material and monetary donations for the seabirds affected by the spill and the tireless rescuers who are working to save them. For the next two Sundays (June 20 and 27), we will collect donations at UUCL, which Heather will deliver during the last week of the month.

Weekend of June 12 & 13 at UUCL

Dear UU Lakeland Family and Friends,

What does UU mean to you? How can you maximize your personal and spiritual growth within our community? These questions are central to UU life, and this weekend UU Lakeland is offering several ways to explore them.

On Saturday, the new “Fellowship of Freethinkers” will meet at the Lake Ashton Country Club in the Lake Wales Ridge area. This group, sponsored by UUCL members, will be held the second Saturday of each month and welcomes all folks who identify as freethinkers, humanists, Unitarian/Universalists, ethical culturalists and/or religious liberals. On Sunday, Rev. Bonnie Devlin will offer a special service and after-service session on Small Group Ministry, a program of deep listening and sharing designed to promote “intimacy and ultimacy” among members. If you haven’t signed up to participate in the 12:30 p.m. Small Group Ministry session, two slots are still available; email me by Saturday to get your name on the list.

Bonnie Devlin will explore why we need this pastoral ministry, and how we gather to share intimacy and ultimacy in our lives through deep listening in small groups.

12 p.m.: Pot Luck Lunch, Social Hall. Bring food to share with fellow congregants at this monthly post-service gathering, where we feed both body and spirit.

Memorial Day Weekend 2010

The Memorial Day weekend is upon us, and although things typically slow down at UUCL as summer approaches, we still have plenty of offerings for our community.

While Religious Exploration has suspended for the summer, childcare is still offered (to volunteer, contact re@uuclakealnd.org) and services and other Sunday programs continue.

As this weekend marks the fifth Sunday of the month, the UUCL Chapter of CUUPs (The Covenant of UU Pagans, an earth-centered affinity group) will present our 11 a.m. Sunday service. This month, they’re working in collaboration our minister, Rev. Bonnie Devlin, to present “Let the Whole World Sing.” You won’t want to miss this uplifting event.

Annual Meeting March 28, 2010

On Sunday, we will hold the Annual Meeting of the UU Congregation of Lakeland. During this important session, we will:

* elect new officers for the 2010-11 church year.

* approve a budget for the 2010-11 church year.

* vote on two initiatives: a change to our bylaws and the adoption of the Green Sanctuary program.

* present our 2010 Special Service Award to one dedicated member.

All members who are eligible to vote at the meeting should have received an Annual Meeting Packet in the mail, detailing each of these issues. If you have not received an Annual Meeting packet, let me know and I will have one available for you on Sunday. Although non-members cannot vote at the meeting, attendance is encouraged so you can get an idea of what the next year will bring and how we conduct church business.

Since our meetings tend to last a while, we'd like to provide snacks. Please bring finger food to share so that we can quickly get a snack and head into the Sanctuary for our meeting.

Also this Sunday, UUCL will host the following events:

Hell on the playground

Ruth Gibson, a retired Unitarian Universalist minister, had her first theological confrontation at the age of five. As she tells it, her Catholic friend told her and her Jewish friend—in no uncertain terms—that they would burn in Hell, complete with vivid descriptions of what that would entail. Although her Jewish friend responded matter-of-factly, “I go to Temple and that’s every bit as good as church, my parents said so, so there,” Ruth was being raised unchurched and had no such high ground. She was then informed that her parents would also go to hell. While this incident occurred many years ago, today’s children being raised in our faith are even more likely to face such confrontations—and these days even the response “I go to church” may not be good enough because, according to the playmate or the playmates’ parents, “it’s not a REAL church.”

The dreaded question generally comes after a child has been talking to another child who attends an evangelical Christian church. Even progressive Christian or theist parents may have to deal with this question because they don’t attend the same church as the questioner’s family. The question can be very frightening for young children, who are concrete thinkers with vivid imaginations. They can easily conjure up a place of eternal torment full of fire and personal suffering.

In response, it’s tempting to encourage our children to simply state that we don’t believe in Hell. But this engagement opens up more dogma, not more dialogue. After all, many Unitarian Universalist adults have met only frustration when attempting to debate theological understandings with evangelicals. How can we expect our children (who have less experience and knowledge at their disposal) to fare better than we might? Besides, questioning the existence of hell may lead to conversation-ending comments like “The Bible says so” and “How could anyone doubt the word of God?” Unitarian Universalist youth who are religiously literate and confident in understanding how their family’s beliefs differ from that of others could possibly hold their own in such a discussion, but most younger children and teens will just come away from it fearful and upset.

Therefore, when we explain to our children that we don’t believe such a place as Hell exists, we also need to inform them why many other people do. Knowledge is power, and having a basic understanding of the stories of the Bible and the beliefs of other religions is one of the most important life skills we can offer our children. Being aware that other people believe in Hell before the subject comes up on the playground is far less fear-inspiring than learning about such a place from a friend, child, or neighbor who seems to know all about it. Parents can help their children to understand that ideas about God have evolved over time and different religions preach different ideas about God and about what happens after we die. We can also explain to them that faith is different from science, which involves provable facts and tested theories.

Unitarian Universalist children need to be assured that having different beliefs than their peers doesn’t mean they will be punished or suffer in a place of eternal torment for those beliefs. Therefore, when your child is asked if they are saved, perhaps they can simply answer “Yes,” with the understanding that we believe everyone is “saved” from the torture of Hell and without having to argue over its existence.

The Annual Meeting of the UU Congregation of Lakeland will be held on Sunday, March 28, and all members need to prepare for it.

First, you should plan to attend an information session about the content of the Annual Meeting, which will be held on Sunday, March 21, immediately after service. Then, watch your mail for the Annual Meeting packet, which was sent out on Thursday, March 18. This packet will give you complete information on the candidates and initiatives members will be asked to vote on at the Annual Meeting. Let me or President-elect Theresa Lutz know if you have any questions.

You should also plan to be at UUCL this weekend for some wonderful events, including two concerts and a special service featuring UU songstress Mindy Simmons. See below for complete information on upcoming events:

Local Musicians are coming together to create a Musical Extravaganza held at the Historic Polk Theatre to benefit the relief efforts in Haiti.

The multi genre event will feature Blues, Jazz, Contemporary, Rock, Folk (with a little Bluegrass thrown in) and Classical music to cover all tastes.

Featured acts will include TAABU, The Paul Mazzarella Trio, Billy Needs a Beard, Lady Z & Ivory Touch, Noel Rosa, and Larry Howard (Founding member of Grinder Switch)& The Southern Rock of Ages Band.

Many of these performers are coming direct from the National (and International) stage to show their support for this grass roots event. It will be a Special Night of Great Music and a few surprises thrown in for good measure.You won't want to miss it!

All proceeds are earmarked for Immediate Relief, and Crop Revitilization/Reforestation through Green Leaves Organization. As much as immediate aid is needed a self sustaining future must be rebuilt.

Support on all stages for this event that promises to not only address a dire need but also spotlight the great talent available here in Central Florida would be greatly appreciated.

An After Show Party will be hosted at Mario's Italian Restaurant on Edgewood Dr. in Lakeland with their Full Bar and Tapas Menu.

On Friday, March 12, UUCL will have a pot luck dinner for the staffers from the Coalition of Immokalee Workers who have been living and organizing in Lakeland for the past four weeks.

The main focus of their work has been organizing the march from Tampa to Publix headquarters in Lakeland, in a continuing effort to persuade Publix to join the Campaign for Fair Food and the efforts to combat conditions of slavery in the tomato fields. The March will be held on April 16-18.

Everyone is invited to attend the dinner on March 12 in the sanctuary at 6:00 p.m. Bring a dish or your favorite libation to share.

On Saturday February 13 our Beloved Community came together to "Be Committed". Good food, fine company and spectacular entertainment helped us celebrate our abundance as we reaped the benefits of small commitments by many people. Thank you one more time to all who helped make it a very memorable evening.

Part of the purpose of the Annual Dinner is to launch our annual Pledge, or Stewardship Campaign that helps us create our budget for the upcoming congregational fiscal year, July 1, 2010 thru 2011, and some of the evening was spent learning how you can help and why you would want to.

Many of you renewed or made fresh financial and labor commitments to our work since then, and we thank you so much for your generosity. We are quickly approaching the halfway mark in our campaign, with over $28,000 in pledges from 39 members in 27 households.

If you have not yet pledged your time and talent to the congregation, won't you please do so? The greater your commitments, the more readily we can achieve our commitment to bring Polk County tolerance and liberal thought as expressed in our mission statement, so won't YOU "Be Committed!" ?
