UMW HERC SPRING 2013 MEMBERSHIP MEETING

"Creating an Inclusive Work Environment"

UMW HERC and MnCUPA-HR are cooperating to provide a day full of professional development opportunities for administrators, faculty, staff, and students from HERC and MnCUPA-HR institutions. Sessions will address the:

· research on how work/life policies and practices affect the recruitment and retention of faculty--with an emphasis on female faculty, Dr. Kate Quinn, Senior Research Scientist, Educational Policy Institute

· application of corporate social media recruiting practices to the recruitment of minority faculty and staff, Stacy Van Meter, Executive Director of Talent and Employment Branding, Deluxe Corporation, and Dr. Pakou Yang, Academic Dean, Century College

· existence of persistent racism on campus: Rowzat Shipchandler, Racial Equity Manager, The Saint Paul Foundation

· impact of a culturally competent campus on the retention of minority faculty and staff: Lissa Jones, Public Affairs Host, Urban Agenda, KMOJ Radio, Organizational Development Consultant

· implications of recent legal imperatives on college personnel, Littler Mendelson

Students in human resource development programs are invited to attend the meeting and an 8:00 a.m. breakfast session that will focus on human resource careers in higher education.

Remote Broadcast, Other Participation Opportunities, Carpooling

The plenary presentations will be available via remote broadcast. Participants can view the broadcast from their own computers by simply clicking on the meeting URL. However, institutions may wish to organize discussion groups to collectively watch the broadcast.

TIAA-CREF Individual Counseling Sessions

A New Face in Human Resources

Erika will be responsible for administering Unclassified staff recruitment, titling and compensation transactions. UW-Superior has developed required training related to Executive Order 54 which all employees (including student and temporary employees) are required to complete. A target date for completion is April 30, 2013. In-person training sessions will be offered on March 6, 9:30am - 10:30 am and 2:30pm-3:30pm in YU 203 and again on March 7, 9:30am-10:30am and 2:30pm-3:30pm in YU 204. Executive Order #54, Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Policy

On December, 2011, the Governor issued Executive Order #54 requiring all University of Wisconsin System employees to immediately report child abuse or neglect if the employee, in the course of employment, observes an incident or threat of child abuse or neglect, learns of an incident or threat of child abuse or neglect, or has reasonable cause to believe that child abuse or neglect will occur. Please refer to UW-Superior's Policy (attached above) on the Reporting of Suspected Child Abuse and Neglect for specific responsibilities and reporting requirements.

For those unable to attend the scheduled in-person training, on-line training is provided at this site: http://www.uwsuper.edu/hr/forms/eo54.cfm . Directions are provided at the site and we anticipate the training to take approximately 30 minutes to complete. Once an employee has completed the training, the employee will receive an automatic email certificate confirmation of completion. Human Resources will receive the same email confirmation and your certificate will be placed in your personnel file.

Supervisors will be responsible for tracking employee completion of this requirement. As a reminder, the target date for completion is April 30, 2013. If you have any questions regarding this policy or required training, please feel free to contact me.

Inclement Weather Policy

With the arrival of cold weather, it is time to review the policies and procedures to follow in case of inclement weather.

Because local weather differs from area to area of the state, the authority to close a campus to the public, cancel classes or close the campus entirely has been delegated to the Chancellor. However, it is the state's policy to keep state offices open for employees even when severe weather causes them to be closed to the public. Always assume that the campus will not be closed.

On occasion, the university may suspend classes due to inclement weather; however, all other operations at the university continue, necessitating non-teaching staff to report to work. Locations for updates on the status for campus, when necessary, can be found on the UW-Superior home page, the UW-Superior Weather Hotline which can be accessed directly at 715-394-8400 as well as media sources in the Twin Ports Area. The UW-Superior Weather Hotline voicemail message will be updated by 6 a.m. for information regarding day-time classes, and by 2 p.m. for evening and night classes. Faculty and staff are asked to wait until the times above to call because numerous incoming calls may interfere with a weather message update. University Relations will continue to update local radio and television stations which broadcast weather-related changes and cancellations when inclement weather strikes. Please understand the difference between canceling classes and closing the campus - assume the campus is open even though it may be reported as closed by the media.

If you cannot report to work, contact your supervisor. Employees who cannot report to work due to inclement weather conditions may use paid leave (other than sick leave) or the employee may elect to use leave without pay.

Any non-exempt employee-individuals who are eligible to receive overtime for over 40 hours worked in the work week-who can't make it to work, or leaves work early because of weather conditions, can charge this absence to vacation, personal holiday, compensatory time if available, or take leave without pay. Employees will be allowed to work to make up for lost during the current work week as scheduled by the employer. Make-up time shall be at the regular rate of pay. All represented employees should check their respective contracts for specific information about the inclement weather provisions.

In general, exempt employees will have the opportunity to make up lost time due to inclement weather during the current or next pay period as scheduled by the employer or may elect to use vacation, personal holiday, compensatory time or leave without pay.

The Chancellor and Provost have reminded us that UW-Superior policy says that classes will meet as usual unless there is formal notification of cancellation from the Chancellor's Office or the University Relations Office. If there is no such notice, classes will meet as scheduled. Individuals who must travel to and from campus should use their judgment as to whether or not such travel is wise. Should it be necessary to cancel a class due to the absence of a faculty member, it is the responsibility of that individual to notify his/her department chairperson and to schedule an appropriate make-up sessions.

Retirement Group Appointments

The Wisconsin Department of Employee Trust Funds (ETF) is offering retirement Group Appointment sessions in Ashland and Superior on January 9, 2013. A morning session is scheduled in Ashland at 9:00 a.m. And an afternoon session is scheduled in Superior at 3:30 p.m. Directions and location are provided when you register for the session.

Wisconsin Retirement System (WRS) members are required to have their retirement packet in hand upon arrival to the appointment. If interested in attending, please telephone the ETF call center at 1-877-533-5020 to request a retirement packet. (IMPORTANT: Requesting a retirement packet from ETF does NOT obligate one to retire. The participant simply has their application and packet in case they do decide to retire sometime over the coming year.) You may register for the Group Appointment when you
request your retirement packet.

Any WRS participants who are within one year of their minimum retirement age (age 50 for protective, age 55 for non-protective) are welcome to contact ETF at 1-877-533-5020 to request a retirement packet.

ETF Group Appointments are designed for members planning (or considering) retirement. Topics covered include the retirement annuity (pension), health insurance, life insurance, return-to-work rules, etc. The Group Appointments offer a participant the opportunity to ask questions of
knowledgeable, experienced ETF staff.
