It's that time of year again. the organization know as The Royal Academy has issued a challenge to ALL writers. This time they are encouraging multifandom stories. MULTI-FANDOM.

Oh, the audacity...oh the humanity...oh what killer stories we will have to read.

You mission, should you choose to accept it, is to infiltrate the Academy by participating in the challenge as a writer. You will communicate with headquarters with a series of code words that you must include in your story. Follow the roools and your survival is assured; break them and we disavow any knowledge of your mission. Good Luck.

Oh and we understand that EVIL J and OZ are also cooking up a Punzle but we'll worry about that when it surfaces.

Yay...more shared words!

Joan is right it never hurt anybody to say "thank you" or to give praise to someone for something that you liked. I won't argue with that. I guess I just don't really feel comfortable about e-mailing writers. Funny thing really as I do like writing the reviews and letting everyone know my feelings about the fic's that I've read!? (Someone with a degree in psychology might like to explain that to me).

As for the reviewing business – it takes bit of work to write a review, but at the same time I get an excuse to do a rerun of fic's that I've found good enough to save! And let me tell you this - Rev is really good about the beta-thing, she gives out lot of commas and corrections for free!

So if you would like to share some of the good stories you have come across, please let the Rev know – I for one would like to know what you found, even if you just write a short review.

Futility

Not a lot to say tonight really. I'm in a fairly sombre mood. (You might want to skip this ramble if you don't feel like being depressed).

It was Remembrance Sunday this past weekend and of course it's Armistice Day tomorrow. I bought my Flanders poppy last week. The day I got it was, coincidentally, the anniversary of the last day of the third battle of Ypres. Passchendaele. I died in Hell - they called it Passchendaele. (Siegfried Sassoon). And I thought about "The War to End Wars". And all the wars since then.

And then today six coffins arrived back in England. Six coffins, six soldiers, six fathers/husbands/brothers/sons. The youngest was just 18. I can't remember exactly what I was doing at 18. I was a-serving of 'er Majesty the Queen in what was then the WRAF. I was probably being yelled at for not having my hat on straight or something. Whatever I was doing I'm damned sure I wasn't expecting my life to end suddenly and bloodily. And I wondered what the hell was the point. What did all those millions die for in two world wars. Because we haven't leant a damn' thing. We still send eighteen-years-old lads to die in foreign fields. And for what?? Greed. Hate. Religion, (or at least the corrupted version of it). War settles nothing.

And tomorrow, when I stand silently for two minutes, I'll be thinking of them. The dead of the two wars,and the way we've betrayed their sacrifice by continuing to wage war ever more fiercely. I'll be thinking of the lads who died then and the lads who still die.

And I'll ask why. Why do they still die?? What's the point??

And I ponder the futility of it all.

Ramble from Rev

I love these back and forth rambles.

I hadn't decided if I wanted to write another guest ramble about the review site but after reading Joan's response, I figured I'd put my two cents worth in.

I, too, was tossed from a board for "lurking." And Joan is right, it's not a very nice word. I understand the concept but it gives the feel of a stalker or Peeping Tom. And I never felt like that. I rarely enjoy chatting with people in message boards, occasionally, but it is rare that I'm in that sort of a mood. Being the geeky introvert that I am, I'm there to read, not to socialize. I usually gave feedback to authors but I preferred to do it privately instead of posting a comment for everyone to see. If a story or character touched me on a personal level, I didn't really feel comfortable exposing myself emotionally in a public forum where others had the opportunity to criticize my opinion. Which, I suppose, may seem strange now that I help run a review site...

Anyway, I know that the majority of authors seem thrilled to get some feedback and if you were moved by something in a story, you should absolutely contact that author in some way and let her know - if you're comfortable with it. I think Joan was right on the money - who doesn't like to hear that something they created was enjoyed? I've heard from a few authors that have had work reviewed on our site and they're happy that we're getting their work out to be read by more people. And they've even thanked us for any constructive criticism that we gave. Not a single flame job yet! (knock on wood...)

And now on to UK. She put her money where her mouth is. We've gotten four reviews from her so far and I have a feeling there will be more coming. And I know that the visitors to our site appreciate her reviews because they are reading them and using them to find new material.

I've written with several women over the past few weeks about submitting reviews and I think the main theme of those conversations is this - I'm not a writer, I won't do the stories justice, and no one cares what I think. Believe me, I understand those sentiments because I felt the same way. I am not a writer but I am a reader. And who visits the review site? Other readers looking for good writers. I don't think anyone expects my reviews to be as engaging as a story. I was certain that no one would even bother with coming to the site other than my friends who also read fics. But I couldn't have been more wrong. They don't bother to check the site but hundreds and hundreds of others, all around the globe, do! I couldn't believe that there was really a demand for honest reviews of all types of fan fiction housed in one location, but there is.

If you have considered submitting a review, don't hold back. Do it. Other readers DO care what you think. I've found three new stories that I'd never heard of from UK's reviews alone. And if it's the fear of bad writing that's holding you up, don't let it. I'm a beta, too. I'm sure the other reviewers won't mind me sharing this with you fine Uber Ect. readers: English is not the first language for most of our reviewers. I beta the reviews of more than one reviewer for basic spelling, grammar, and word choice (like switching "prolly" for "probably" and things like that). I don't mind at all. One of my nicknames is Mistress of the Comma. So don't let fear hold you back. The review site belongs to all of us, I just hold the admin password ;-) .

Ah yes, lurking. What a nice (NOT!) word to describe the behaviour of not jumping in and spewing forth opinions etc. There used to be a time when it was considered good manners to wait and get a feeling for the style and content appropriate to the environment one entered. Am I that old? Has the world in general changed that much without me noticing?

I've had my share of being thrown off Internet Relay Chats for "lurking". Funny, I always thought "good riddance", these people were not what I would have been looking for, anyway. It irks me, however, that this seems to hold true for the Athenaeum, too, at least a related forum.

UK, I understand, and in part share, your reluctance to send feedback to authors. I tend not to give "what I don't like" comments myself, even though someone might profit from constructive criticism. The rare occasion I do is when an author explicitly asks for it. Otherwise, I think that my personal concept of "better" is just that -- personal, and rarely applicable to others.

From an equally personal point of view, I can however, tell you that "I liked your story" will probably not bother an author, no matter how full her mailbox may be. Worst thing that can happen is that you won't get an answer, but you can be fairly certain that it's never unwelcome. It might even help motivate the writer to keep up her work. Writing involves a certain amount of work, and who would be annoyed at a "thank you"? That's not "stupid emails", that's being nice. But, above all, it is *your* choice whether or not to "feed the bard".

All that being said, I think your idea to contribute to a review site is excellent. It's also a lot more work than just dropping an author a line -- shame on those calling you a lurker.

I really like getting paid. I don't, however, like updating my checkbook and doing all the budget moving. Actually the budget moving isn't bad but it seems like every two paychecks I screw something up and my records don't match the bank's. It takes me forever to find it. Sometimes I give up and call in the math genius (E) to find it for me. She always does.

And bloody ISPs. And come to think of it bloody email. Technology's great when it works, isn't it?? But there's very little else that can bring on that instant-rage-and-ready-to-chuck-it-through-a-window feeling quite so easily.

I've been having email issues for a while. First I blamed Thunderbird. So I got rid of it. Problems continued. Then I blamed Yahoo. They did admit some fault but even after they sorted it the problems continued. Turns out it's my ISP. The routes they use are used by spammers, hackers & sundry other undesirables so a fair few places block anything. Which means half the time I don't get mail - or mail I send doesn't arrive - and I can't view some websites without using a cloak. I'm not happy with them at all. Contract renews in February. I think I'll look elsewhere.

And then to really make my technological hell worse - My laptop died. It's been a pretty good machine and lasted well, I got it in 2003 and it was second hand then, so I can't really grumble. Though it had a minuscule hard-drive and a laughably small amount of RAM by modern standards it served me faithfully. No, what I'm annoyed about is that it's holding chapters 2 & 3 hostage!!

I'm very careful about backing files up. I either back-up to cd and/or email myself every new chapter. I have multiple cd copies of various edits and versions of everything. Except for my most recent one. I hadn't backed up parts 2 & 3. I was intending to but hadn't got 'round to it. And now I can't get them. Yet. (I've got a couple of friends who might be able to work miracles for me, so all might not be lost. After all - anybody who can speak and understand that language, you know - the one with too many consonants - especially Ws and Ls - and not nearly enough vowels - has to be capable of miracles).

So this is a timely warning to you all. Back up your important files. Every. Single. Day. Don't leave it. You never know when the fickle fates will strike. For your sanity's sake...do it.

My day consisted of trying to make one kiddo feel better. Her friends at school were all sick last week and we thought she got lucky...no way. So we're at the beginning of flu season and I got to take a day off work.

Tamara did her duty at work and then got to rush over to the clinic with the boys in tow and wait in line for the H1N1 vaccine. We actually located doses available for them today and she took advantage of the opportunity.

They just walked in the door, hence hungry and a bit tired I'm sure.

I have a comment to the Help and Hype on the 22 October maybe you will post it as yet another call for on line readers to help each other out with finding the good stories on the net by way of the Fan Fiction review site.

I'm pretty much just lurking around in the world of fan fiction. Actually I didn't know I was lurking until someone on the Athenaeum Forum put a name to my actions or rather the lack of it. You are properly familiar with the phrase but as English is not my mother tongue I had to look it up on the net. OK so now I know that the fact that I don't tend to give feedback to the author of the stories that I read on line are considered bad manners.

So why not just get on with it and "feed the bards". Well I have my reasons but I guess that it's up to you to decide if I (and all the other lurkers) should just cut the crap and get on with it. Here is my lame excuse. If the story is really good and I itch to go "pat the bard on the back". I get second thoughts like - if I found the story to be this good so has lots of other readers and the bard has properly had lots and lots of stupid emails from readers going on about what a great story that was and who needs another email like that? If the story is bad or just not living up to my expectations I ask my self why should I send a negative comment to an author who has decided to share his or her writing with the rest of the world for free?

So why am I writing all this...well mostly be course it's been on my mind for some time. I keep stumbling across calls for comments from the authors of the fan fiction that I read and from the editors on the sites where the stories are posted and I really don't want to be a spoil sport. Maybe someone beside me has had thoughts like this? If that's so I'll like to share my new found solution to the "problem". I'll go write a review of some of the good stories that I've found on the net and submit it to the editors of the Fan Fiction Review on BlogSpot. That way I can share with you some of the good time I've had and throw in any negative comments that I might have with out deliberately hurting the author. Maybe some of you would do the same? That way we'll be able to spend our online story reading time on quality fiction instead of sorting without direction through the tons of stories available - and some of the stories are really a waste of time!

Hope to see my not yet written first review of fan fiction on the Fan Fiction Review site on BlogSpot soon and hopefully a lot of other reviews form vivid on line readers like me.

Splendid, I want to thank UK for stopping by and giving a wonderful solution to a continuous problem. It may not be what everyone agrees with but I think it's great and has a chance to be even better if folks participate. I like the idea that both positive and then some more critical can be done without considering hurting anyone's feelings. The honest approach is better and as more reviews get posted people can find reviewers they may agree with and others they may not, but in the end it only works if people review. Hence, trot on over and give it a try!

Fall has finally arrived here in the Pacific Northwest and it's been quite nice. I'm hopeful for a mild winter this year. Mom will be visiting over the Christmas holidays once again and I'd sure like to show her more of Seattle than the view of shoveling snow she got last year.

So tomorrow we have our Halloween party at the school. My boss has told us that costumes are mandatory. Of course, she says this but we all know it's a half-hearted order. If I hadn't packed my Superman hoodie I would wear that with one of Cal's Superman capes. As it is I may just wear one of my cheap enough not to care if they're ripped shirts that's Superman blue and the cape. I can be Super Tamara. Or I could always go as my evil twin and just be a complete bitch all day.

Happy Diwali to any of our readers who are Hindi, Sikh or Jain.

First a quick public service announcement. As you all know (unless you've just got back from a mission to Mars or something) Yahoo closed geocities this week. If you didn't save your favourites you might be well stuffed. But then again you might be lucky. Although The Wayback Machine didn't previously archive geocities sites because of the huge impact the closure had on a large number of excellent sites and with the ample warning Yahoo gave (unlike AOL) The WBM decided to do something about it and they've tried to archive as many sites as they could. See here for details.

Went to the pictures with the kid after work tonight. (When I say the kid btw I'm actually referring to my 40+ year old cousin with whom I share a house. She's younger than me so she's the kid). Anyway, we went to see the Disney/Pixar animated film Up. Now you might think that a film like that was not my type at all. Normally you'd be right. Except that this one was brilliant. Suitable for (real) kids and yet perfect for adults too. I spent half the film going "awww" and the other half laughing out loud. Very funny. Ever-so-slightly lump-in-the-throat at one point. And the dog - Dug - damn' good fun. I know dogs just like that. Hell, I have a dog just like that!! (A Golden Retriever). I can highly recommend it. (Especially if you have kids - or if you yourself are a big kid!!).

I nearly forgot you lot tonight. *g*. In fact if E hadn't emailed me with some info on the BtVS updates I would have forgotten that it was my turn to update. I blame it on the government. (When in doubt blame the government - they can't fight back.) Well it is their fault, in a round about sort of way. They make us operate (as my nan used to say) on "government time" instead of "God's time" in the summer. And then they switch back and confuse the hell out of everybody.

In case you hadn't gathered, our clocks went back from BST (British Summer Time) to GMT/UTC (Greenwich Mean Time) this past weekend. And unfortunately my body clock hasn't adapted properly yet. Which meant I'm dead tired and I had just about made my mind up to go to bed early tonight (any time before midnight is early for me) when I read E's email and thought "oops".

America (well most of it - I understand that there is a state or two that doesn't bother with all that nonsense) has all this to look forward to this coming weekend. And Aus & NZ have already gone the other way this week.

Of course this twice-yearly inconvenience sparked the usual rush of letters-to-the-editor from Disgusted of Tunbridge Wells, and questions in Parliament as to why we don't keep Central European Time and "wouldn't it be simpler to be on the same time as the rest of Europe". Conveniently ignoring the fact that Europe has more than one time zone anyway. And America seems to cope quite well with several time zones without too much effort.

Mind you, the amount of trouble I have adapting pales in comparison to the animals. The kid's (four) cats' stomach clocks know it's supper time and they are not going to let you forget them!! Cat's really know how to be annoying. They probably have little instruction manuals tucked away in their baskets. Chapter Four: How to drive humans to the brink of cat-icide!! Evil little wotsits!!

Mud

We checked out a new (to us) pumpkin patch this year. Sadly it was filled with lots of mud and little else. It had nowhere near as much variety of fun, food or even pumpkins as the patch we have gone to for years. Hence next year we will either spend money to see the expensive patch, which we were to cheap to visit this year or go back to your steady free pumpkin patch from years past.

Trying new things is good. Sometimes it works out great and sometimes you learn the knowledge of what you had was already great. Hopefully one only tests in the right situations and acknowledges the reality of the other.

Got home fairly early allowing us time to check out a local arts and crafts show. Small, but had some interesting stuff. Tamara did the bulk of the buying this time. However it was all for the upcoming holiday that seems to be closer every day. It will be here before we know it.

So enough of our days events, here's hoping you all are having a splendid weekend and now you have time to enjoy the update!

Help and Hype

Both in one ramble, read on.

A short while back, the fabulous grunts of Uber Etc. were nice enough to let me ramble on about a new site (fanficrev.blogspot.com) some friends and I had put together to share reviews of fan fiction. We were hoping that a few readers would shuffle on over and have a look. Well, quite a lot more than a few have come - and keep coming back for more! We have more visitors that come directly from the Uber Etc. Links page than any other place.

Now that we're getting hundreds of visitors a week, a large number of those being return visits, we want to ensure that we have plenty of new reviews waiting for you. The problem comes from the fact that we only have two regular reviewers. We have a couple of women who send in reviews when they can but, for the most part, it's me and Incognito trying to pump them out. Not that we don't love all the reading and sharing our opinions with you all because we do, but there are only so many hours in the day and there's that pesky thing called a day job...

So, loyal Uber Etc. readers, I'm putting out a call for guest reviewers. That's right, we're looking for your help. We're looking for some well written, thoughtful, objective reviews of fan fiction. Any fandom, pairing, sexual orientation, whatever. If it's fan fiction or unpublished, original online work, we'll post a review on it.

We have a few rules that we insist on to keep the reviews fair. We don't allow reviews of work completed or beta'd by the reviewer or friends and family of the reviewer. We really do work hard to keep the reviews as unbiased as possible.

If you want to submit a review or have any questions at all, contact me at fanficrev at gmail dot com. If you do submit a review, please include the handle you'd like to go by (I use The Rev) and a link where the story can be found. Also let us know what fandom and pairing so we can apply the appropriate tags. Take a look at some of the existing reviews if you want to see what I mean.

Grumpy

Feeling out-of-sorts today in an I'm as grumpy as hell for no discernible reason, sort of way. Not sure why. It makes it difficult to think of anything to chat to you all about, though. Mostly because it means all I want to do is grumble or rant. And trust me, you don't want to be subjected to either of those things.

Rant about politics. Ours in the UK, (BNP - GRRR!!!). Yours in the USA (too many grrs to mention but I'm starting to wonder if Obama's chief sin is "governing while black" because some of the comments I've read lately have left me gobsmacked). EU politics - specifically the Tories links with such fascists as the Latvian party For Fatherland and Freedom. (These pillocks celebrate the Waffen SS for God's sake!!) Rants about the naivete of some of the Hollywood film community regarding a convicted criminal who is too far beneath my contempt to name.

Grumbles about the weather. The rain has been so heavy these past couple of days that we've been unable to work. No work = no pay. Grumbles about the dentist. Check-up time. And yet another new dentist at the practice. Who looked at the (slightly) broken tooth at the centre of the top row. (Yes it's not brilliant, no it's not too bad really). And she saw pound signs (that's this symbol £ not a hash mark like this #), I know because I could see them in her eyes, whirling like the fruit on a one-armed-bandit. And she asked if I'd like it crowned. Every dentist I've ever had, since it was broken in my teens, has asked the same. And they all been told it can't be crowned - the bone was damaged too badly - I just have to put up with it. And just like every previous one she insisted on taking an x-ray and making another appointment.

She's going to be disappointed. She can't make any money from it. Especially not a few hundred for a crown. Ner-ner ner ner-ner.

See - told you. I'm dead grumpy. So I won't subject you to any more...*g* Hope your week is going better.
