Vote for Unionville vs. West Chester Rustin on Friday, September 25th to be the 6ABC High School Huddle Game of the Week!

Our UHS football team has been selected as one of the choices for 6ABC’s “High School Huddle Game of the Week” for Week 4 on Friday, September 25th. Now it’s up to our students, faculty and fans to win the online vote. Our school and opponent will be pitted against one other game in the 6ABC viewing area. The game with the most votes will enjoy extended game highlights on the High School Huddle program which airs every Friday night following the Action News at 11pm.

Please get the word out to our fan base. This is a great way to get our supporters excited for the big game. Voting is free and easy to do. Here’s how you can vote:

1) Go to 6abc.com/huddle and look for the “Vote for Game of the Week” section on the main page.

2) Vote for the Game of the Week (Unionville vs.West Chester Rustin at Rustin)

Pennsylvania Youth Survey (PAYS) 2015

Later in the month of October, the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency (PCCD) will again be administering the Pennsylvania Youth PAYS survey. The survey is a scientifically validated tool designed to gather Pennsylvania youths’ knowledge, attitudes and behaviors around alcohol, tobacco, and other drug usage, violence and other problem issues. Additionally, the survey tracks risk factors that can lead to likelihood of delinquent behavior and substance abuse, along with the protective factors that can help buffer young people from risk. Chester County resources fund the PAYS.

Administered biannually since 1989 the survey captures information from students in grades 6, 8, 10 and 12. The information has proved to be an invaluable tool for communities, schools and state agencies in providing prevention resources. Through PAYS school administrators can determine specific issues facing our youth and families and direct programming to promote healthy and positive youth development.

The survey is anonymous, voluntary and confidential. No student level data is reported.The survey takes approximately a class period to accomplish. Data is reported in aggregate by grade in an expansive summary report.

Parents / Guardians desiring their child(ren) not participate in the survey are to contact the middle and/or high school respectively. The 2015 Cappies nominations have been announced and UHS received 10 nominations for the fall play Shakespeare in Hollywood

The Greater Philadelphia Regional Cappies is an organization that promotes high school theater across the five counties surrounding Philadelphia and parts of southern New Jersey. Each school forms a team that undergoes training about how to compose a critical review. For example, Unionville High School has a team of Cappies critics whose task involves attending and reviewing at least five plays and/or musicals. The top two reviews are published in the Philadelphia Inquirer. Jessica Oehler is the lead critic for UHS this year. She arranged which shows the team reviewed and made sure each critic completed his/her requirement.

In addition, at the conclusion of every performance, the adult mentor leads the groups, who may represent five or six high schools, in a discussion about all aspects of the performance. The Unionville mentors this year are Mr. Matt Borger and Ms.Jennifer Haak. The student critics then complete a preliminary vote about the level of performance from lighting and sound to stage crew and props to best actor and actress.

In the beginning of May, all the Cappies critics gather at Plymouth Whitemarsh High School and vote for the top performers, stage crew and tech crew. The results are tallied and the top scorers receive nominations. The honors are only for students, not adults.

This year on May 16th, all the performers, critics, tech and stage crew, directors, administrator, teachers, and family members gather at Eastern Regional High School in Voorhees, New Jersey for the Cappies Gala, a red carpeted, Tonys-style event, to see who receives the coveted Cappies award. Opening with a song and dance, the Gala draws a sell-out crowd of enthusiastic fans of theater.

Because Unionville High School received a nomination for Best Play, we, like the other Best Play and musical nominees, will perform a five minute segment from Shakespeare in Hollywood, directed by Daniel Lipowitz. All nominees are presented with a plaque to honor their achievement. To receive a nomination in any area is a great honor. Unionville High School received 10 nominations.

In 2012, UHS won the Cappie for Best Play for Running in the Red.

The Unionville-Chadds Ford School Board adopted the following resolution during its May 4, 2015 budget meeting:

WHEREAS, teacher quality is widely acknowledged as one of the most important factors influencing student learning and achievement; and

WHEREAS, Unionville-Chadds Ford teachers are a dynamic force in student learning; and

WHEREAS, Unionville-Chadds Ford teachers have demonstrated, through their sense of purpose and dedication to their profession, that they are a source of inspiration to our students; and

WHEREAS, Unionville-Chadds Ford teachers encourage students to achieve their goals while recognizing that every student has unique strengths and needs; and

WHEREAS, Unionville-Chadds Ford teachers, through their service as mentors, coaches and club sponsors model good citizenship and encourage students to contribute to the well-being of their communities; and

WHEREAS, the commitment of Unionville-Chadds Ford teachers to academic excellence is reflected in our students’ achievement; and

WHEREAS, this year, the week of May 4-8 is set aside as Teacher Appreciation Week for the purpose of recognizing teachers, both individually and collectively.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Unionville-Chadds Ford Board of School Directors extends its sincere gratitude to all Unionville-Chadds Ford teachers and directs the Superintendent to post this resolution on the district website and to communicate it to the residents of our community.

926 Bridge Construction Update

The latest information we have on the project is that it will start in March of 2016 but it will last only 9 to 10 months. The original plan had called for an 18 month project.

The UCF community responded to John Sanville's call for action. Local representatives received many calls, emails and letters. They responded by working with PannDOT to develop a revised timeline that minimizes the negative impact of a lengthy project.

Teacher Appreciation Week: A message from John to our teachers

Greetings,

If you look up ‘teacher’ in a dictionary the definition is pretty simple:

noun: one that teaches; especially : one whose occupation is to instruct.

These few words do not begin to cover all that a teacher is or does. There is so much more to teaching - and I am grateful that UCFSD has so many of you doing an exemplary job across the district every day.

A quality education is the result of many factors - one could even say ‘it takes a village to teach children well.’ That is true - as long as the most prominent villagers are teachers. There are so many accouterments – books, computers, microscopes, bulletin boards, sound systems, instruments, etc - that complement education BUT without the expertise of a great teacher their value is diminished. In every classroom, in every lab, in every gymnasium, on every stage - UCFSD has dedicated and remarkable teachers changing the world for our students.

When UCFSD is lauded and recognized by outside organizations the kudos are all yours. Here in administration we have fine folks who analyze data, review curricula, and evaluate the pedagogy (and more!). Teachers implement the programs, share information, and make magic happen. There is no replacement or alternative to superior teaching - and thankfully we are chock full of excellent teachers. The worth of a school district is determined by what happens in its classrooms.

For all of you who help our youngest students - the Hillendale Huskies, the Chadds Ford Chargers, the Pocopson Patriots, and the Unionville Stars - run, advance, understand, and shine - THANK YOU. When kids get a solid foundation in elementary school they are prepared for what comes next - in school and in life. You set a high bar and teach the students to reach for it every time.

For those Patton Hawks - who give middle schoolers wings to soar with - THANK YOU. Navigating the ‘tween years’ again (!) is not for the faint of heart - but you make it look easy. When they leave - they are ready. Job well done.

For those Unionville Indians - who usher students through a vast expanse of intellectual, artistic, athletic, technological, and scientific options and beyond - THANK YOU. The time between middle school and college is uniquely important in our memories and lives - and your abilities to accommodate and appreciate so much is amazing.

For all of the others teachers, aides, assistants and volunteers who spend time with our students and add to their educational experiences - THANK YOU. We are a better district because of you,

My late mother-in-law Pat was a much-beloved elementary school teacher for 40 years. During her career math was revamped three times, reading was organized by color and then by ability, class size went up (38) and down (24), and technology crept in – teaching one of her second -graders US geography via the Weather Channel. Pat was a consummate professional who loved her job - every single minute of it. She was retired and I was a middle school teacher when we met - and we had many long and lively conversations about schools, testing, teaching, curricula, superintendents (she knew a few - some better than others) and every other thing under the educational sun. Her comments were thought - out, thoughtful, and I think of them often. One observation Pat shared resonated with me then - and is always in the back of my mind….”As long as you have a teacher and a student education will take place. All of the other stuff is nice- and helpful - but if you have those two people - that is enough.”

My gratitude for all you do is but a small acknowledgment of your value to UCFSD and its students, and their families- but is genuine. Pat would be happy to know that UCFSD has such superior teachers - and then she would remind me to appreciate them.

Budget Hearing Monday, May 4

There will be a budget hearing this coming Monday, at 7:00 PM in the district office. Financial plans and budgets are important. They support district priorities and provide the funding needed to support our mission. The public is encouraged to come to the meeting and engage in the process. For those who can't attend, there will be a live stream available on the district website and an archive of the video will be available for review Tuesday morning. If needed, there will be additional budget hearings Tuesday and Wednesday.

Patton 6th grader wins the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution Award

The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) holds an annual writing contest ("American History Essay Contest") for students in grades 5-8. The 2014-2015 essay topic was "A Child's Journey Through Ellis Island." The essays are required to have a certain number of words, a bibliography, and historical information about Ellis Island. There are a panel of judges and a scoring rubric.

We are proud to report that Patton 6th grader, Julie Griswold, was the 6th grade essay award winner for Chester County, the state of Pennsylvania, the Eastern Region of the country, and ultimately the National First Place Winner in the 6th grade category.

Julie will be honored during the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution’s Educational Awards Night, which will be held on Thursday, June 25, 2015 at Constitution Hall, in Washington, DC. President General Lynn Forney Young will present her with the award, which includes a certificate, medal and a check for $1,000.

Art in the Square 2015 was a rousing success for multiple,regional school districts including Upland, Kennett, Avon Grove, Oxford and Unionville, and over 20 participating teacher's from Elementary to High school level! Thanks to UHS's own PTO, and the effort of treasurer,Mrs. Page, the exhibit was able to support hundreds of artworks from across southern Chester County! The Unionville High SchoolArt Department was pleased to have work from Ms. Benson'S 2-D and Ms. Dilworth's 3-D classes featured in the article. Two PA Schools Earn Spots on U.S. Department of Education’s Green Ribbon Schools List

Harrisburg, PA - Acting Pennsylvania Education Secretary Pedro A. Rivera is congratulating Charles F. Patton Middle School in Chester County and Northampton Community College for being among the 81 institutions recognized nationwide by the U.S. Department of Education as Green Ribbon Schools for their efforts around environmental issues.

“These two institutions are emblematic of the positive environmental practices that are happening in schools throughout the commonwealth,” Rivera said. “Not only can these schools serve as an inspiration for their counterparts, but can also provide insight and information on best practices for other schools which want to engage in similar programs.”

The Green Ribbon Schools program recognizes schools, districts, and institutions of higher education based on their efforts to reduce environmental impact and costs; to improve health and wellness of schools, students, and staff; and to provide environmental education, including STEM, civics, and green career pathways.

The awards were announced in Washington, D.C. by U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan and Christy Goldfuss, the managing director of the White House Council on Environmental Quality.

In total 58 schools, 14 school districts and nine postsecondary institutions were honored.

Regional awards for German students

Guten Tag!

On Saturday morning, the regional chapter of AATG held their annual awards ceremony at the Canstatter Volksverein in Northeast Philadelphia. German students from the Philadelphia area and Delaware were awarded various prizes and scholarships for their performance on the National German Exam this winter.

Stephen Holt, a senior at UHS, won the top award, a $1000 scholarship from the Barbara Hoess Memorial fund. Stephen was the top scoring non-native speaker in the region!

Ida-Louise Andersen - $150 cash award from Brauhaus Schmitz

Jack Lose - $100 giftcard to Brauhaus Schmitz

Meike Grillmaier - $50 Barnes and Noble giftcard from Schlaraffia Filadelphia

Lee Schulingkamp - $50 cash award from Die Alten Herren

Medals were also awarded to all gold, silver and bronze award winners.

Former UHS student, Bridget Bulkley, won a $3000 scholarship from the German Society of Philadelphia. Bridget is majoring in German at Franklin & Marshall College and will spend her junior year studying in Heidelberg, Germany.

All royalties come back to our middle school's Student Council--benefactor of the project--and will continue to forever. Budget Hearing May 4th at 7pm

The next phase of the budget cycle involves public review. All residents are encouraged to attend the public hearing scheduled on May 4th at 7pm in the district office conference room. The administration will present the plan for 2015 - 2016. If needed they will hold additional hearings on May 5th and 6th.

Patton Receives the 2015 U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools Award

At Charles F. Patton Middle School, green thumbs provided the catalyst for national Green Ribbon recognition on the nation's 45th Earth Day.

The U.S. Department of Education announced on Wednesday, April 22, that Patton was one of only 58 schools in the country that received the 2015 U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools award. Seventeen school districts and nine post-secondary educational institutions were also recognized.

The After Prom Committee at Unionville High School is proud to announce the return of After Prom to the newly renovated High School. Like many years before, parents and volunteers have been hard at work transforming the high school into a themed-oriented event. It is their goal to keep the students and community safe after prom. After Prom offers students a memorable opportunity to join friends in a safe & fun environment while providing activities, food and surprises. The event takes place “After Prom” on May 18th from 11pm to 5am.

Run For Our Sons - UPDATE!

It was a great day and a fantastic turnout of close to 700 participants for the 4th annual Run for Our Sons! The event raised over $60,000!! 7th grader Matthew DiPaolo was the top Patton finisher in the 5K, placing 7th overall with a time of 20:48. Patton teachers Mr. Rusnak (20:00 and 4th overall) and Mrs. AnStrauss (21:52 and 23rd overall) each finished first in their age bracket while Mrs. Kropp, Mrs. Gera, Mrs. Landry, Mrs. Freehart, Mrs. Bunting and Mrs. DiGregorio also took part in the 5K race! A huge thank you to everyone who helped make this day another great day and helping Elliot and Henry Johnson and Parent Project Musuclar Dystrophy in their fight to end Duchenne.

C-MITES, a program based at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, provides Weekend Workshops for academically talented students in kindergarten through 9th grade. The next session is Saturday, October 20th at Patton Middle School in Kennett Square. C-MITES will be offering six classes at this location. Classes include: Adventures in Physics, Bug-bots, Geometry in Art and Nature, Get a Clue, The Mysterious Human Heart and Rocketry and Spacecraft. The first week of October, the fall sports teams at UHS will be fundraising for Unite for HER at their home games! The athletes will don pink shoelaces and accessories, we will have Unionville Unites for HER t-shirts for sale, there will be several raffle prizes, and lots of other activities going on that week as well. See the schedule below for all of the games*. The week will culminate at Friday night's Varsity football game vs. Oxford with the raffle drawing for some great prizes! So make sure to get your pink t-shirt, mark your calendar to come to the games, and to end up at the football game on Friday night cheer on the Indians, turn the stadium PINK and maybe win a prize or two!

Relay for Life Totals

The Relay for Life Totals are in and the UCFSD Teams led the way, raising $15,708 (and that doesn't even include the many UCF student teams that were present) This amount represented 27% of the entire event total! Congratulations to The Chadds Ford Chargers ($8,368), Patton 4 Pam ($4,368), Coach A's Angels ($1,960) and UES/District Transportation ($1,012). A special congratulations to Chadds Ford who came in 2nd place for fundraising for the entire event and 1st place for best camp site. It truly was a school effort! Thank you to everyone who spread the word, bought luminaries, sponsored a walker or a team, or walked.

So far, $48,000 has been raised for Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy through this year's event. This would not be possible without all of your support.
