Center City Slam Brings Out the Best in Us

Unionville High School Crew

With 19 personal records, 13 other athletes hitting their goals, and 10 finishing in the top 20, it was a good Saturday for Unionville High School Crew at the Center City Slam. Athlete camaraderie was at an all time high as they coached each other for that little extra push at this annual rowing competition.

27 UHS Crew athletes competed in the 11th Annual Center City Slam, a 500-meter & 2,000-meter indoor rowing race on the Drexel Campus. From Novice to Varsity, the men and women competed in three events on indoor erg machines that lined the floors of the Drexel Gym.

Unionville High School Crew is a Club sport, supported by volunteers and parents, for our 50+ athletes to compete in regional and national regattas. Practices take place at Newport Rowing Club and Unionville High School. Chris Tolsdorf started as Boy’s Head Coach in the fall of 2015 and took over as the director of the Unionville program during the summer of 2016. Chris has coached both the Varsity Boy’s and Girl’s crews as well as the Novice Boys. His crews have won medals at The Cooper Cup, Philadelphia City Championships, and USRowing Mid-Atlantics and he has taken crews to The Head of the Charles and SRAA Nationals. He has overseen strong growth of the program – over the past two years the team has purchased four racing shells, cox boxes, rowing machines, and equipment to allow all our athletes to perform at the highest level.

The primary goal of Unionville Crew is to create a team where each athlete can discover their true potential. Some come to us from other sports, others are exploring their athletic side for the very first time. By the time they graduate we want all our athletes to have learned the value of hard work and understand the gifts and lessons that can be found in the pursuit of excellence. Winning is not the goal but can be the happy result as we work to chase perfection. Perfection may never be achieved but the character we build in its quest will last a lifetime. UHS Students in Discover Program Get Hands Dirty

The Chester County Intermediate Unit’s Discover Program is getting students’ hands dirty at Longwood Gardens to prepare them for work and independent living.

Twice a week, in the fall and spring semesters, students go to the Gardens accompanied by their job coaches and work in a variety of departments, including Horticulture, Education, and Guest Services. Students have planted bulbs, organized supplies, and readied test tubes for our research team, among many other tasks.

Since September, Unionville High School students Jack Badeaux, Natalie Kramer, Brooke Ladd, and Rebecca Pancoast have been working with Longwood Horticulturist Darren Rutledge and his team on the preparation of a new light display for A Longwood Christmas.

Students Make Top 64 in International Public Policy Forum

Amit Pampati, Andrew Binder and David Kinane have made it into the Round of 64 of the International Public Policy Forum (IPPF). High school students from teams representing 17 countries and 30 U.S. states participated in the preliminary round and Andrew, Amit and David were selected as one of the top 64 entries. From here, the trio will vie for a spot at the IPPF Finals, held in New York City, as well as the possibility to win up to $10,000.

UHS Crew - Head of the Schuylkill

The Novice Boys and Girls of Unionville Crew finished their season on Sunday at the Head of the Schuylkill. The Novice Girls rowed to 23rd place out of 39, while the Novice Boys finished 7th and 22nd out of 49. Only 4 seconds out of 3rd, the Novice Boys were the 2nd fastest boat in the league. Congrats to UCrew!

The last Varsity event of the fall season, the Head of the Occaquan, will be held on Sunday, November 5 in Fairfax Station VA, where 18 juniors and seniors will row.

Unionville Crew is in its 5th season operating as a Club sport at Unionville High School. This fall the team grew to over 60 athletes.

After a 5 day competition, the Speech and Debate team as returned from the NSDA National Tournament in Birmingham. This was a momentous trip for our team in several ways. First, congratulations to all of those who won individual awards:

Homeland Security and Protective Services Academy UHS Cadets

Most recently our UHS cadets, Jordan Marzolf (Jr.) and Jacob Labonte (Sophomore) received an interior firefighting state certification. This is a tremendous accomplishment and typically only adults are certified. In addition to the tech school, these students are active members of the local firefighting company (PoMarLin Station 36).

Two UHS Students will Participate in Prestigious Science and Business Programs.

Two Unionville High School Juniors will spend this July at two prominent Pennsylvania universities after each was selected as one of approximately sixty other students to participate in prestigious science and business programs.

Katelyn Tsai will spend four weeks with students from around the country and world attending the Pennsylvania School of Global Entrepreneurship hosted by the Iacocca Institute at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, and Michael Iacocca will spend five weeks in Pittsburgh with students from around the Commonwealth, having received a full scholarship to attend the Pennsylvania Governor’s School for Science at Carnegie Mellon University. Both programs are designed to bring together highly motivated and talented high school students for the purpose of providing opportunities for academic and practical enrichment that is not available through the typical high school curriculum.

Tsai will devote her time to learning about entrepreneurial business development and innovation by spending time in the classroom with Institute faculty and guest lecturers, and she will get to learn about the practical application of those classroom concepts by taking part in workshops and case studies with local business leaders and organizations. The program is designed to provide insights and opportunities to those students who have demonstrated an entrepreneurial spirit and a desire to share and develop that with other students around the country and around the globe.

Iacocca will spend his five weeks attending science classes taught by Carnegie Mellon University faculty and staff, as well as instructors from neighboring universities like University of Pittsburgh, Duquesne, and Robert Morris Universities. In addition to classroom lectures, participants get to attend a lab of their choice, where they have access to state of the art scientific equipment and the experienced, knowledgeable instructors of the host university. The students must also complete a comprehensive group project in one of the science disciplines offered during the program.

Tsai, whose top school is Brown University, became interested in entrepreneurship from her volunteering activities. Seeing such disparity between rich and poor, she chose to attend the summer program to learn about what it takes to start as business. Tsai plans to use the skills she will learn to further her entrepreneurial spirit and intends to start a non-profit company in the near future, one that would help improve the lives of those in her community who are less fortunate. She is an active student, who along with her rigorous academic courses finds time to be the current news editor and the Editor-in-Chief in waiting for the Indian Post, the UHS school newspaper; one of the captains of the Speech and Debate team; a Co-Founder and Board Member of the UHS Democratic Club; a Student Council Representative; a Co-Founder and Vice President of the UHS Red Cross, and a Teaching Assistant at Math Plus, a local math tutoring program.

Iacocca, who hopes to attend Carnegie Mellon University, is looking forward to the extended visit to the university, as well as experiencing the intensive academic rigor for which the Governor’s School is renowned. Iacocca has accelerated his science and math courses since Middle School, having completed several independent studies to do so, and is looking forward to the scientific challenges the program offers. Iacocca is a member of the UHS Academic Team, the Math Team, and the Speech and Debate Team. He is also a member of the Study of Exceptional Talent, a program run by the Johns Hopkins’ Center for Talented Youth. In addition to his academic achievements, Iacocca is working on his Eagle Scout Project this summer so that he can earn his Eagle Scout badge with Boy Scout Troop 22.

As Inaugural Winners of

Richard B. Yoder High School Scholar-Athlete Award

Sophie Wilks (tennis, Unionville High School) and Kerry Tomasetti (football and basketball, Kennett High School) are the inaugural recipients of the Richard B. Yoder High School Scholar-Athlete Award. Each will receive a $1000.00 scholarship for post-secondary education, each will be listed on the Chester County Sports Hall of Fame (CCSHOF) website, and each will receive honorary CCSHOF membership.

The awards will be presented by former Eagles coach, Dick Vermeil, at the Yoder Awards ceremony on Saturday, June 3, 4:00-6:30 PM, at the West Chester Golf and Country Club.

The Chester County Sports Hall of Fame (CCSHOF) established the Yoder Award to recognize a graduating female and male Chester County scholar-athlete who demonstrated the traits that defined the life and legacy of Richard B. Yoder. Mr. Yoder was a lifelong resident of Chester County, and exemplified what it meant to be a scholar-athlete. He excelled in academics and athletics at West Chester High School and West Chester State College (West Chester University); served his country in the United States Marine Corps; became a professor and athletic director at his alma mater; was an active member in his church and numerous civic organizations; and, was a two-term mayor in the Borough of West Chester.

“My father would be humbled by having his name attached to recognizing Chester County’s outstanding scholar-athlete-leader,” commented Susan Yoder Schick, Richard Yoder’s daughter. “Both Sophie and Kerry are exceptional athletes and students, and both have exhibited leadership and community involvement impressive for their age. Dad would be bursting with pride.”

Student scholar athletes were nominated by their home school for the inaugural Yoder Award, which will now be presented annually by the CCSHOF.

Jerry Schneider, CCSHOF President, noted: “CCSHOF encourages excellence in academics, athletics and leadership. The Yoder Award is one way we can contribute to the community by recognizing and encouraging the best and the brightest among future generations of Chester County scholar-athletes. Dick would be very proud of these two young people.”

UHS Boys' Tennis Team - Ches-Mont’s Premier Tennis Program

The UHS boy’s tennis team has consistently been the Ches-Mont’s premier tennis program for many years.

Unionville sure looks like it is head and shoulders above all of its league competition once again this season. With last Wednesday’s 7-0 victory over visiting Avon Grove, the Indians already secured the Ches-Mont American crown. At 10-0 with three league matches to play, Unionville is on the way to its seventh overall Ches-Mont crown in the last eight seasons.

UHS Indoor Color Guard Regional Champs!

Unionville High School Indoor Color Guard:

First Place Champions of Tournament Indoor Association Southeastern Pennsylvania Region

Unionville High School’s Indoor Color Guard was crowned first place champions in Tournament Indoor Association’s Southeastern Pennsylvania Region. They achieved a season-high score of 91.54 in the Scholastic A Division. This was Unionville’s first year competing in this upper level performance classification. Earlier in the season, Unionville also made their first trip to the Winter Guard International World Championships in Dayton, Ohio and competed against 129 groups from around the country to advance to the semi-finals in the Scholastic A Division.

Unionville’s 13 member ensemble performed their award-winning show “The Lair” with artistry and precision. The expressive production was set to the music of the string quartet Bond and was based on the ballet “Dracula.” It depicted the desires of Dracula’s Sirens to be the next chosen. Through the use of period costuming and the exploration of a broad range of choreographic styles, the performers took the audience on a visual roller coaster ride that culminated in the selection of the next bride and mistress of “The Lair.”

UHS Students Competed in Temple University's (Fox School of Business) 2nd Annual Statistics Data Challenge

Eight students from Mr. Long's AP Statistics classes competed in Temple University's (Fox School of Business) 2nd Annual Statistics Data Challenge Competition on Thursday, April 27. Students worked in teams of four to complete a two hour exam created by the Statistics Department at Temple.

The team of Sachi Patel, Kristen Andes, Bridget Foote, and Julia Trigg finished in second place out of thirty-five teams from other area high schools. Attached is a photo of the team receiving their second place certificates.

The team of Nick Yang, Jason Zhang, Amit Pampati, and Eli Weisman received an "Honorable Mention" Award, which means their score placed among the top five teams in the competition. The second photo attached is of this team.

After a walking tour of the campus, the students heard from faculty members, current undergraduate and graduate students about the growing demand for people in the fields of statistics and data analysis.

Unionville High School Indoor Percussion Concludes Season As 7th Best In The World!

Unionville High School’s Indoor Percussion Ensemble is returning from the Winter Guard International World Championships in Dayton, Ohio as the 7th best in the world in the Scholastic A Division. Unionville competed against 64 groups from around the country in the preliminary round to advance to the semi-final round against 32 groups, and then to the finals against the best 15 groups in the country. This was Unionville’s second trip to the World Championships and their first as a world finalist.

As a testament to their musicianship and performance ability, Unionville is also ending their season as the Mid Atlantic Percussion Society Scholastic A Champions and the WGI East Power Regional Scholastic A Champions. Their award-winning show “The Drought” was filled with excitement and artistry.

The 25 member ensemble showed great dedication to their craft with practice three times a week for three hours per night. Almost every Saturday was more than a twelve hour day with practice and a competition, which sometimes took place in a neighboring state. The students used a broad array of percussion instruments including drums, cymbals, marimbas and sophisticated electronic effects to present their dramatic show. They were judged on marching and concert criteria with judges evaluating each their creativity, expression, performance quality and technical excellence.

UHS’s Flaming Phoenix Robotics Team Advances to the FIRST Championship!

UHS’s Flaming Phoenix Robotics Team Advances to the FIRST Championship!

Unionville High School’s Flaming Phoenix robotics team will be competing in the 2017 FIRST Championship to be held in St. Louis, Missouri on April 26-29, 2017. FIRST Championship is a dual international-level robotics competition to be held on sequential weekends in Houston, TX and St. Louis, MO in April 2017. To qualify for this level of competition, Flaming Phoenix has had an exciting and successful season, advancing to the Eastern Super-Regional Competition held in Scranton PA, through wins at the Delaware State Championship and the Pennsylvania State Championship. At the Super-Regional Competition, the top 72 teams advancing from states in the northeast from Virginia and Ohio to Maine competed for the privilege to move on to the FIRST Championship in Saint Louis. Continuing their strong performances, Flaming Phoenix placed 5th in their division of 36 teams after 9 qualifying matches, and won the 2nd place Design Award for their strengths in the design and construction of their robot, thus qualifying to advance to the FIRST Championship in Saint Louis. The Flaming Phoenix team consists of UHS students Austin Hwa, Christy Ammon, Kaelyn Gaza, Matt Caputo, Justin Warner, Rachel Folmar, and Patton Middle School students Matt Farr, Ansh Abbaraju, and Brandon Tsai.

Following a sports model, FIRST Tech Challenge teams build, program and operate robots of their own design to play a floor game in an alliance format. Guided by adult coaches and mentors, students develop STEM skills and practice engineering principles, while realizing the value of hard work, innovation, sharing ideas, and gracious professionalism. Gracious Professionalism is a way of doing things that encourages high-quality work, emphasizes the value of others, and respects individuals and the community.
