Synopsis:

Review:
This is as said is a rare story about a father-son, son-father relationship. This movie is an story of 13-year-old Auro with an extremely rare genetic defect called progeria (the term progeria is derived from the greek word geras, meaning old age) that causes accelerated aging. Auro is the son of Vidya and Amol who doesn’t know that her girlfriend Vidya had this child. The story of child Auro, mom Vidya and paa Amol who is an idealistic young member of parliament, is a nice twist of family, school, dreams, society, politics and many more. The story written by adman turned film director R Balki keeps you hooked with the plot till the end credits starts to roll. The story is strong and daring. Daring in the sense that it is not hesitating. The words are as natural as it was meant to be except some dialogues of Auro in English. The story is filled with emotions and serious drama and does not let you down on any single frame.

Amitabh Bachchan as auro gives commendable performance though he is barely recognized as he is all covered with prosthetic makeup. Auro brings outs the creative 13 year old kid. Whether be it at home, school and hospital you can see the child behind the 80 year old body. Abhishek Bachchan plays the India’s youngest, brightest, coolest M.P. He has done a praise-worthy work in the movie. He manages to give the neta look with the white linen kurta pajama. Vidya Balan as Vidya who is an successful single-mom, gynecologist looks stunning throughout the movie in her designer sarees. I think this one of the Vidya’s best movie performance. Every frame of the screen with Vidya is an pleasure to watch. Arundhati Naag superbly fits into the role of Vidya supportive mother and Paresh Rawal as Amol dad is flawless as always. Not forgetting the Auro’s friends in the school, actors have done amazing work in this movie.

The music is Paa is not conventional. Veteran composer Ilaiyaraaja has scored the music of paa. “Mudhi mudhi Ittefaq Se” by Shilpa Rao is melodious and my personal favorite.”Mudhi mudhi ittefaq se” has two more versions — “Udhi udhi”, an extension of the original and ”Gali mudhi” that has vocals by Shaan. It is slower in pace but equally nice. “Gumm Summ Gumm” is also a nice hear. The Paa theme is cool, bright and lovable. Others songs are just good but great with visuals.

Prosthetic Makeup by by Hollywood’s Christien Tinsley (famous for his work in The Passion of the Christ, Catwoman and other films) and Dominie Till The Lord of the Rings film trilogy fame is also one of the highlights of the movie.Editing is one the best aspect of the movie. The 2 hour and 20 minute is an well crafted and edited piece of work by Anil Naidu. Visuals of Mudhi Mudhi is an great job by every behind the screen people in this film. P.C. Sriram as the cinematography has managed to capture everything from romance, emotions to house, school, hospital in an amazing and vivid way. This movie made within and tight budget of 15 core is an awesome job by the production team. And the creative way in the movie credit roll at the beginning, in which Jaya Bachan reads the credit is great.

Overall, the film is an must see for Vidya and other worker’s amazing work. You will get to see and feel the mother’s love and of course very rare story about a father-son, son-father relationship.

Consensus:

This film should be renamed Maa.

Day 1

November 22, 2009 at 6:45 I reached the Open Learning Exchange(OLE) Nepal’s office in Sanepa. The taxi was scheduled to come at that time but came at 7:20. No matter what, I got into and we picked up the trainer Girman Thapa (NCED) and with Rajeev Dai (OLE Nepal Lead Person) we were headed to Dhulikhel, Kavre. In the way, at Banepa due to some issues there was an partial Banepa Banda. We were lucky enough that we took alternative route and reached Dhulikhel. But the participants of the training we not that lucky, most of them didn’t made the time of 9:00 AM. We set up the power cables and stationaries for the participants. And around 12 all the participants made it to the ETC Training Center. But the worst part came when the school server and brought but not the power cable, so we had to change the sessions to move the sessions needing school server for the next day. The lunch at local restaurant was great in the warm sun of Dhulikhel. After the session, Rajeev dai and I had a long talk on everything. After than I went for my first dream at Kavre.

Day2

November 23, 2009: All the participants reached at time and after the breakfast the session started smoothly. They had also brought the power cable with them. As the session went on, i started updating the school server and did technical other stuffs like fixing some of the teacher’s XO. This day everyone were comfortable with time, session and everything. Today the sessions on pustakalya was also done. Many teachers had never explored the pustakalaya before. They were taught on how to view videos from pustakalya, they explored the video gallerly. I taught them about the video player’s controls and stuffs. Many liked the it and said that the children had already done that. After some pustakalya session, many sessions on Epaath and combined teaching and a tasty lunch, day two was done. All were informed to meet at Janajyoti Ma Vi, Janagal. That day, after the session Rajeev Dai and I went towards to take some cool and fresh air of panauti.

Day3

November 24, 2009: We were headed to Janajyoti Ma Vi, Janagal. At Janajyoti all teachers according to yesterday’s plan were getting ready to take classes and some to monitor and observe. I went to Class 2, and sat on a bench besides one boy. The teacher was teaching Nepali, and after some introduction the teacher told to bring, unfold and open Epaath in their Epati. At that time, I asked who didn’t have the C bundle or have other issues with Epati. All the class at once, pointed to around 3/4 students. The teacher told them to give those XO’s to me and focus on class. I started NAND blasting on those XO and all the issues were fixed by the end of that class. Those students were happy to get their XO working as normal. After that, I went to class 3 and fixed around 3/4 XO. And then I went to Class 6 where I had to fix around 14 XO. Thank God.:) All were fixed. After the teaching session was over, we had an spicy snacks. All the teachers and trainer’s except me started to review and discuss how they did the combined teaching. I was bored. And I went to Class 2 and there I talked with them for around 30 mins and after than I had to copy the national anthem to eveyone’s XO(There is an interesting story about that, which I will blog later). The same in Class 3 and Class 6, I had to insert the national anthem to XO of eveything single student and I did that, quite fast. In Class 6, they asked me on what to make passwords for email address. I gave some random tricks and we had a long discussion on the usability(Of course, without the term usability) of XO, Sugar UI and all other XO things. Many were fascinated when, I taught them how to know time using XO. After then making every student happy, i joined the teacher’s session. And left the Janagal at around 4 with Ananta sir. The day was cool and awesome for me and I think for the student’s too.

Day4

November 25,2009: The last day of the training, almost all came in time. Today all of them had brought the school server from their school. I started updating them. And after a session on yesterday’s review. And one session from Anata, I was asked to take session. Though I hadn’t thought and planned on it, I agreed and took the first lesson on how to update Epaathi and other activities. After the session almost all were confident that they can do it now by themselves. Subir dai came and added on the update process allowing me must time to focus on training. That day I took around 3 sessions, fast and making easy as I felt. I happy felt happy and knew that knowledge increases on sharing. After that, we allowed them to practice and ask question. After a long question answer session by me, and other session by Rajeev Dai, Griman Sir and Ananta Sir. The training ended. The teacher left ETC with updated XO and Schoolserver and great deals on minds. We left Kavre, with a great experience in mind.

Sypnosis:Two young girls, Mei and Satsuki, move into a new home that is close to the hospital that their mother is in. In their yard is an extremely large tree which is home to three Totoros, gods of the forest. Soon after, news from the hospital comes up that their mother can’t come home as promised, so Mei (the younger daughter) runs away from home to visit her mom. Satsuki then needs to turn to Totoro for help in finding her sister.

Review:
I watched the movie My Neighbor Totoro (My Friend Totoro) exactly after 21 years of it’s first release. Still every frame of this hand-crafted work is wroth watching. The journey takes you away from roads, noises, busy life, commitments, urban-ism to nature, love and care.

The story revolves around a family moving to a new home. The home which is a also a home of spirits, namely a big Totoro as dugged out by the youngest family member Mei. The plot is about children’s curiousness and cuteness. The simple story of Miyazaki, manages to show us the children’s way of interaction to new things and environment. Curiosity is greatly captured in this movie. The plot manages to shown the emotions and way of love between the members of family. Sister’s love, Mother’s love, father’s love are all depicted in a such way that you feel the love in air. And nobody also can forget the nanny’s affection towards the young girls. The young strange children to each other and their getting used to with each entertains your soul. The twist in tale with an telegram, search for Mei, Tororo’s playing with rain, sprouting seeds, growing trees and Catbus’s intelligence makes the plot simple though nice. Satsuki cute way of communicating with her mother, rural life and his father’s succeeding attempt of care makes it an nicely crafted story of love between family, society and nature. And the plot manages to draw a nice parallel between realism and fantasy of nature.

Talking about the visual design of the movie, the rural environments and expression of the plot is fitted well into the frames of the movies. Green, lust forest, clear streams, cool breeze, houses and emotions are beautifully drawn taking you to a 86 min magical adventure. Sprouting seeds and growing trees is one of my best scenes from the movie. From Totoro’s shelter to village, the beauty of mother nature is a building pillar for movie’s naturism. And the starting and ending images with credits are also awesome, setting way to and from the green magical world.

Sound is one of the all best things in the movie. The opening and ending song are absolutely amazing. Amazing in a sense that it fits well to the story and environment. The sounds of forest, totoro’s curiosity with rain and umbrella is great part of the well captured sound in the film. I had watched this movie as English Dubbing and it still manages to provide us the real natural sounds of love, care and curiosity from the characters.

This anime film is a cute, feel-good, lovable and great to watch family movie which indeed gave Studio Ghilbli it’s mascot. BTW: It is children movie for everyone.

Yes, the Sugar; the XO’s desktop from Sugar Labs. Wikipedia defines Sugar as:

Sugar is a free desktop environment designed with the goal of being used by children for learning.

Though named as child’s desktop environment, I found Sugar as easy as GNOME, as plasmic as KDE and as lightweight as XFCE. Which means Sugar is way other than today’s default Linux Desktop. Yes, it was made for child to use in smaller LCD sized OLPC XO and of course lacks many normal desktop enviroment features.

After running Sugar in the XO, I installed XO in my Fedora 10 laptop. The install instructions are as follows from fedora wiki.

$ sudo yum groupinstall sugar-desktop

PS: I tried to install it in Ubuntu but it encounter errors.

Let’s start with the Main Desktop area, which i would love to call the F3 Desktop. It list all the activity (programs in XO) in an circular fashion by default. From here can access the Sugar Activities. As I am using it in my laptop not an XO, i cannot access my personal apps like Firefox, Pidgin from the activity. There are two ways of doing so as far as i know; one just open terminal activity and starts the programs another make activity yourself. Last one is of course time consuming so I went for the first one. Just open as many programs I would generally start during my normal desktop startup from the terminal acivity. The only differences in the applications was the menu and text boxes depending on the program(BTW: Sugar is also based on GTK).

As I discussed above the home desktop(the F3 Desktop); now let’s go the F1 and F2 desktops. These are the Schools and Friends Network Desktop in case of an XO but in my case it lists the available wirelesses to which i can get connected.

Alt + Tab works in Sugar, which gives you easier switching between apps. The black and white theme of the desktop is just awesome. Rather than desktop environment it loads in seconds after the login screen. Though one encounter many problems while using Sugar for their desktpo. The Fn Combination doesn’t work which means you cannot change the brightness(Tip: Change the brightness in the login screen), volume etc. Volume is always highest when any audio/video program is started, so watch your ears. And many other the most terrible being you can use application with long menu list and large controls such as buttons, menus and etc. Anyway this desktop can be tweaked to get most out of it. I would suggest that rather than working on to get big resource hungry GNOME and KDE on Netbook Sugar would be the best choice.

Sugar is a cool,clean,minimal, elegant desktop for Linux.

But to be ready for desktop user it needs some love right now.

Thousand hectors of agricultural lands have turned into sand bank. Nepal is on the front line of climate change and variations which for some people the changes are catastrophic.

The rain is now very different and are increasingly unpredictable.It’s more concentrated and intense. It means that crop yields are going down. Many cultivable land are being progressively washed by big and small rives like Narayani river,Koshi river, Tirshuli river and others. Observations records that some of the fastest long-term increases in temperatures and rainfall is seen in Nepal. At least 44 of Nepal’s and neighbouring Bhutan’s Himalayan lakes, which collect glacier meltwater, are said by the UN to be growing so rapidly they they could burst their banks within a decade. Any climate change in Nepal is reflected throughout the region. Nearly 400 million people in northern India and Bangladesh also depend on rainfall and rivers that rise there.

Causes of floods in the country are often triggered by rapid melting of snow and ice in high mountain regions. With further increase in global temperature its impacts on human being is increasing tremendously.So this is time that we realize the impacts of the global climate change and start action to counter attack it.

Operating System Concepts
Operating System is the bridge between hardware and the user. There are many types of operating system. Among them Linux, Windows and Mac are the known one. It provides program a way to work and user a platform to enter data and get results.

Switching on/off
A computer can be a gateway to the world, but it has to be turned on first. Consider the following steps for switching a computer ON:
- Check to ensure the power cord is plugged in
- Press the power button
Note: Some have a power switch at the back (or side) of the case, some have a single button at the front etc

To turn off the computer follow the following steps:
- Shutdown using the operating systems buttons
- Once the shutdown is done unplug the power button and you are done

Note: Example of using shutdown by operating system: On Windows XP machine click on Start Button and then Shutdown Logo and Shutdown Button.

Login/Logout
When a computer is turned on you may be asked to select the username and enter password. Only after this you are allowed to use the computer. This processes of getting in through a user is called logging in. And logout refers to the process in which you just log out from the particular user session that you used to logout but not turn the computer off. Other user or you can still get into the system.

Desktop
The desktop refers to the interface provided by the operating system in which you(the user) can use the computer by a set of unifying concepts of graphical user interfaces. Generally, the workspace of the computer given by OS is called desktop. The desktop in itself is also a file directory. From the desktop user can use and get into the features and options given by the use and task that can be done by the computer in a modern GUI operating system.

System time/date
The computer keeps tracks of time round the clock and passing of days on the calendar. This is done by the CMOS battery. This works even when the computer is turned off, so it can keep track of the time. The system time is typically shown on the task bar of the desktop. On most cases the date is either shown as tool-tip on mouse hover or displayed along with time. Clicking on the time displays a monthly calendar. To adjust or change the time and date right-click and click on the adjust or change date and time and then enter the desired input on the new window.

Application menu and Icons
The application menu refers to the menu button on the task-bar of desktop which lists the program in the computer and other options. From the application menu the user is supposed to access all the installed program and even data in most cases.

Icons are the small graphical image representing something on the computer. Icons on desktop can be used to access the files, directories and even programs.

Both application menu and icons can be used to access the program and data. Both lead to a program that allows you to use your data and information.

Files/Directories
All the data stored by the computer. Computer files can be considered as the paper documents which traditionally are kept in offices and libraries. Depending on the types of data there are many kinds of file. Some of them are; image file, audio file, video file, text file and others. The files on most cases contains an extension to represent them. For example, .txt, .jpg, .png, .mp3, .ogg and others.

Directories (commonly folder) is a container of files and other folders called sub-folder.A typical computer file system may contain thousands (or even hundreds of thousands) of files and folder.

The seed for change was sown in 1982, when the organisation got together a 10-day programme to teach the villagers spoken Sanskrit. And, people in this primarily agricultural society eagerly took part in the unique experiment. Now, Sanskrit has become the primary tongue for many of the residents. In the local Sharada Vilasa High School, Sanskrit is compulsory till Class VII. It is the first language from Classes VIII to X. So, the present generation too has learnt to speak it. And, it is not as if the village has not kept in touch with modernity. More than 150 of its young men and women are in IT and work outside. But, they have managed to retain their core values.

And recently Bajaj has featured this Sanskrit speaking village in it’s advertisement. A YouTube Video has been embedded below(Click to view the video):

And it is great to see the big companies like Bajaj feature the village. It triggers a new start from information to masses on Sanskrit. Hopes this fire lives on.

We would love to say “Let Bajaj discover more such villages.”

Another village that converses in Sanskrit in India is Jhiri village in Rajgarh District of Madhya Pradesh.
