Bristol International Kite Festival - 3rd & 4th September 2011

We look forward to seeing you this weekend - the 3rd and 4th September, to celebrate the 2011 Festival (our 25th!!). We are planning an extra special Festival for our 25th birthday, with lots of UK and international guests, so we hope you can join us!

Enjoy a continuous array of colourful kites of all shapes and sizes flown by invited guest flyers and designers

from around the world alongside members of clubs and societies from across the UK. A constantly changing

backdrop of colour in the sky, the chance to admire the artistry, craftsmanship and design of these kites and

banners at close quarters and the chance to talk to the designers and makers about their work.

Overseas guests include:

Spectacular special shapes from down under with swirling giant octopi, manta rays, flying fish, bears and
other mega beasts by kite maestro Peter Lynn from New Zealand, also displayed by Kathleen and Andrew
Beattie and the Al Farsi kite team. Continuing a sea theme fish in line and other creations from Robert
van Weers from New Zealand whilst Rolf Sturm from Germany will show his trademark soft aeroplane kites
including Snoopy and the Red Baron in their flying machines.

Artistic kites feature strongly this year with dramatic hand-painted portraits by Italian artist Claudio Capelli

and striking designs like flying stained glass windows by fellow Italian Fausto Marrocu not to mention
Eduardo Borghetti with his vast spinning rings. Janneke Groen from the Netherlands decorates traditional
Japanese kimono kites with beautiful appliquéd patterns whilst there are large cellular designs by Gerard
Clement from France, Patrizio Mariani from Italy and Rene Maier from Switzerland and modern abstract
graphics by Heinrich Hohmann from Germany.

Notting Hill Carnival 2011

The Notting Hill Carnival usually gets under way on the Saturday with a steel band competition. Sunday is Children's Day, with a shorter parade route. It's also the day that the costume prizes are awarded.

Bank Holiday Monday sees the main parade. In the evening, the floats leave the streets in procession and people continue the festivities at the many Notting Hill Carnival after-parties.

The usual route for the Notting Hill Carnival covers a loop around West London. It generally begins on Great Western Road, then winds its way along Chepstow Road, on to Westbourne Grove and then Ladbroke Grove.

Bristol Harbour Festival 2011 Dance

In preparation for the launch of this year's Dance Village, the sponsors NHS Bristol have teamed up with chorographer Cleo Lake to devise this dance with the aim of getting people up on their toes by learning these simple dance moves.

Cleo will be performing the dance at this year festival and she wants everyone watching to join in. So get your dancing shoes on and learn these simple steps, show your friends and be prepared to join Cleo at this year's Bristol Harbour Festival!

Wimbledon is one of four annual Grand Slam tennis tournaments held around the world.

It's the world's longest-running and most prestigious tennis tournament. Games are still played on the original playing surface, grass, and there's a strict white-only dress code for players.

The tournament attracts around 500,000 spectators and millions of television viewers worldwide.

Almost uniquely for a major sporting event, Wimbledon offers spectators the chance to buy premium tickets on the day – but be prepared to queue!

During the tournament, 500 tickets are available on days one to nine for Centre Court and No.2 Court. Approximately 500 tickets are available on all 13 Days for No.1 Court.. You should expect to queue overnight for a chance to buy one of these tickets.

Several thousand ground admission tickets are also available each day. These give you the chance to watch games from the No.2 Court standing enclosure and from unreserved seating and standing on the outside courts, and on the big screen at Henman Hill.

Once ground capacity has been reached, queuers are admitted on a one-out, one-in basis.

Royal Wedding – Prince William and Catherine Middleton

Prince William will marry his long-term girlfriend Catherine (Kate) Middleton at London's Westminster Abbey in spring 2011.

Prince William is The Queen's grandson and second in line to the throne after his father Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales.

The Dean of Westminster will conduct the wedding service but the couple will be married by the Archbishop of Canterbury. The address at Westminster Abbey will be given by the Bishop of London.

The wedding ceremony takes place at 11am at Westminster Abbey.

Kate Middleton will travel along The Mall from Buckingham Palace to the abbey by car.

At around 12pm, after the ceremony, the newlyweds will return to Buckingham Palace in a grand carriage procession along a route that goes through:

The Mall

The final public appearance of the day is likely to be on the Buckingham Palace balcony at around 1.30pm when the couple kiss for the cameras!

There'll be live screenings of the Royal Wedding in Hyde Park and Trafalgar Square. Both screenings are free and non-ticketed. It's first-come first-served so get there early. Attendees are encouraged to get into the wedding spirit by wearing a hat!

Bristol Zoo Gardens - Wow! 175

Bristol Zoo Gardens was founded in 1835 by a group of eminent local citizens and opened to the public in 1836. That makes 2011 its 175th year! To celebrate this important anniversary, a fantastic programme of events is already underway.

WALK OF FAME

During April 2011 Bristol will celebrate the arrival of its newest attraction. The Bristol Walk of Fame at Bristol Zoo will celebrate and feature 50 of the city’s most renowned people, places and icons from across the historic, creative, sporting and wildlife spectrum. The Bristol Walk of Fame will be a trail of specially-designed plaques within the grounds of the Zoo, with each plaque bearing the names of famous inductees.

A list of 80 candidates was compiled following an appeal for suggestions from the public. This list was as varied as it was interesting and included the likes of Banksy, Massive Attack, Justin Lee Collins, Tony Robinson and the Wurzels. The public voted for their 20 favourites over the space of 30 days via Local Press, Radio and on the Zoo’s website. Over 2,000 voters took part and after a tightly fought contest, the 40 famous people, places and icons were inducted alongside 10 honorary inductees.

WOW! GORILLAS

Wow! Gorillas brings a world class mass public art event to the streets and parks of Bristol this summer. Connecting together residents, visitors, schools, artists and businesses for a truly memorable shared experience for the whole city.

Based on a highly successful arts model, Wow! Gorillas will bring the arts and business communities together for the benefit of the city, showcasing the creative genius that has given Bristol its unique and vibrant culture. Artists will decorate life-size gorillas, sponsored by local businesses which will then be placed around the city for 10-12 weeks.

This world-class event in partnership with Bristol City Council and Wild in Art, will attract tourists to Bristol as well as encourage residents to see their city afresh, encouraging exploration of Bristol and all it has to offer. In addition to bringing together the business and arts communities in Bristol and creating a unique, mass public art event for the people of Bristol, Wow! Gorillas will also raise significant funds to support gorilla conservation projects and Bristol charity Wallace and Gromit's Grand Appeal.

WOW MEERKATS

The new 152 square metre all-weather meerkat enclosure is now open! 'Meerkat Lookout' is home to Bristol Zoo's 13 African slender tailed meerkats.

The exhibit boasts plenty of space and enrichment opportunities for the animals, as well as improved and exciting viewing opportunities for the public. Some of its main highlights include undercover viewing areas, a viewing dome and a tunnel for visitors to get up-close to the animals at eye-level. The exhibit also benefits from warm rocks to provide localised heating for the meerkats, as well as large sandy areas for them to dig and forage, and off-show sections where they can rest and sleep.

The Mayor’s St Patrick’s Day Parade and Festival in association with Lebara Mobile will take place on Sunday 13 March 2011.

Every year the grounds of the Royal Hospital are transformed into show gardens, inspirational small gardens and vibrant horticultural displays that make up the world's most famous flower show.

The Chelsea Flower Show is attended by 157,000 visitors each year. The number is limited by the capacity of the 11-acre ground. Tickets must be purchased in advance.

BPMC - Tuition & Track Day - Sat 2nd April 2011 - Castle Combe Race Circuit

Saturday 2^nd April 2011 sees the return of the annual Bristol Pegasus Motor Club’s “Tuition and Track Day” at Castle Combe Motor Racing Circuit – the south west’s premier race track.

This non-competitive track day offers in-car tuition from the top instructor at the Castle Combe Racing School.

Each year, the Bristol Pegasus Motor Club hires Castle Combe circuit and all that comes with it so 55 cars of all shapes, sizes, ages and performance trot up for a bright and early start of 8.00am and enjoy the circuit for the day. The cars go through Scrutineering, max 100db noise, the drivers are briefed, and the tickets handed out.

£129.00 buys the driver part of that day and 4 sessions out on the track with a small group of seven cars for a maximum of 5 laps a time. If the weather is good and the drivers behave themselves, addition runs can be had pending time towards the end of the day - close at 5pm.

The main attractions of the day are that:

Drivers can go & drive their own car around a race circuit

Drivers can go & have one to one tuition from a top instructor

The day is NOT a race day; the day is a chance for drivers to enjoy their cars and to improve their driving skills in the safe environment of a controlled circuit.

The day is excellent for newcomers, with a limited number of cars on the track, there is plenty of space to go at a speed that the drivers are happy with and will not impede others on the circuit. The "Castle Combe Racing School" provides an Instructor who gives a briefing to all drivers before they go out onto the track. To help the beginners there are cones out on the circuit to show turn-in points and the apex of a corner. There is also the opportunity for some one-to-one tuition. The Instructor will take a driver out in their car and show them the lines and braking point for their car. Everyone who has done this has come back very impressed and the Instructors are really pleased when the pupils who then go out and put into practice what they have been taught.

When and Where?

The day takes place at Castle Combe Racing Circuit, Chippenham on a Saturday 2nd April 2011.

Who attends?

Although the event is organised by The Bristol Pegasus Motor Club, the event is open to all and has attracted individuals from other motor clubs such as the Mini Cooper Register, the MG Car Club, the Lancia Motor Club to name just a few. There is a great deal of interest in the on site driving instructor who is part of the days fees.

What types of cars take part?

This is the great thing about the day. As long as your vehicle has a valid tax disc, a valid MOT, is drive worthy and passes the Scrutineering, it can go out on the track. Remember this day is not a race; it is an organised event to increase your driving skills and test your car. As a result, we have a vast array of different cars. Historically, the Mini Cooper Register bring um.... Minis, but we have a great presence of Westfield, MG and Lotus cars. The 2010 event saw anything from a Ford Mondeo to a Ferrari Marrenello!

What about passengers?

The a minimum age limit of 16 and a maximum one passenger per car. It can also be great fun being a passenger.

Ticket price: £129.00 (for four runs).

Admission to the padlock is free.

The Gates will open from 7.00am to 5.00pm

Track Sessions commence at 9.00am (close for an hour for lunch)

Bristol Fashion Week returns to The Mall at Cribbs Causeway to launch the latest collections available from stores at The Mall.

On Friday 9th July 2010 we will be holding our annual Family Fun Day. If you have helped us in the past you will know that from Family Fun Day we raise money for a local child related charity. Our children, staff and parents as well as local and national companies rally around and put a lot of hard work into making the day enjoyable and profitable for our charity.

This year we are fundraising for The White Lodge Centre in Chertsey, Surrey. The White Lodge Centre helps children and adults whose needs are diverse and include those with autistic spectrum disorders, physical and learning disabilities and specific health care needs. The White Lodge also provides opportunities for these children’s families and carers across Surrey and the surrounding area.

Any money we raise would be extremely beneficial. It costs around £1000 a day just to run the centre not to mention additional planned activities, the ongoing programme of new building and regeneration and the ability to respond to emergency situations. We are sure you’ll agree that this is a very worthwhile charity which is why we at Lilliput need your help to raise as much money as possible. Any help from yourselves with either donations and/or goods which can be auctioned or raffled off as prizes would be most gratefully received. We are aiming to beat last year and so desperately need your help.

Finally, if you supported us last year we would like you to know that we were able to donate £3,261.53 to The Children’s Respiratory Service at St Peter’s Hospital which helped towards the cost of creating an allergy & respiratory database and helped to fund extra hours for the respiratory nurses.

The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew is part of the worldwide celebrations of 2010 as the International Year of Biodiversity, and is one of more than 300 UK organisations, charities and groups supporting this global awareness campaign.
