Baguette Express point of sale system puts franchisees in the know

Franchise News from whichfranchise.com

Baguette Express is installing a point of sale platform to put its shops at the forefront of the food retailing sector and give franchisees the best management information possible to run their businesses effectively.

Each till is configured to automatically send sales information, via the internet, to the DataSmart reporting system. DataSmart collates and analyses the sales information from each site and allows individual outlets to compare themselves against the rest of the franchise. The web-based software is due to go live at the beginning of December.

Each franchisee will have their own unique username and password, preventing anyone else from seeing their individual data. However franchisees will be able to use this log in to benchmark just how well they are performing against the business as a whole, helping them to highlight areas where they could improve.

Jim Stewart, Business Development Manager at Baguette Express, said: "The franchise is growing quickly and we now have 55 shops throughout the UK. The Datasmart system means that individual franchisees can get the benefit of instant, automatic information that lets them see exactly how they are doing.

"Previously each outlet would have had to collate this information manually and there was no mechanism in place to allow them to compare themselves against others."

The software has been supplied and installed by Mobo Innovations Ltd and Mr Stewart added: "We are pleased to be working with such a major player in the IT sector and Mobo Innovations depth of resource and expertise will be invaluable over the coming years as our business grows further."

By offering each franchisee immediate information, the system will not only give them an indication of their performance, but also offer a real time insight into issues as they develop, helping each shop to run more efficiently.

Michael Hutchings at Mobo Innovations said: "This sort of management information gives retailers a real edge and helps them understand exactly how marketing campaigns have affected sales, where the mainstay of their turnover comes from and where they could improve.

"It also lets them compare themselves against others in the same business and from this shared knowledge see where they could do better. As a growing business it is fantastic that Baguette Express has decided to install this platform now and it will prove its worth many times over in the years that follow."

What Platimum Property Partners franchise have to offer in the 2009 Buy to Let market

Franchise News from whichfranchise.com

2009 is providing some superb opportunities to acquire profitable property investments – we’re unlikely to see again in our lifetime a series of circumstances when property investing has looked so attractive. The caveat is that you have to know what you are doing; this is not a market for amateurs and gone are the days of property being ‘easy money’. Changes in the mortgage lending market and tightening of legislation governing buy to let have meant landlords now have to be more professional and possess real business acumen.

It seems that everyone wants to be a property investor, but, in reality, few possess the skills, flexibility, drive & determination, or can adapt to the kind of life that comes with running a successful property business. It’s not about how big your portfolio is, it's about the return on your capital it gives, the income you can extract from it, and whether it can operate without you needing to exchange your time for that profit. You need to work with property experts to ensure you have a sound investment model that insulates your property business against potential downsides, surround yourself with the right legal and financial advisors, and understand that you will need a decent level of operating capital.

There are too many unethical, so-called ‘industry professionals’ trying to convince aspiring investors that ‘no money down’ deals can still be done and offering them a supposedly easy route to buying property ‘below market value’. All of these propositions, when you look into them, are either illegal or so borderline it’s not worth taking the risk; at the time of writing, if the deposit funds you are putting into a purchase are not your own, and the lender is not informed, you are most likely to be committing mortgage fraud.

Platinum Property Partners and its 40 franchisees are focused on acquiring the kind of property that can give strong cashflow and an average 14% yield. The average pre-tax profit across the franchise is £12,000 per annum, per property – that’s after the mortgage & all bills have been paid, and allowances have been made for maintenance and voids. Yes, running a highly profitable property portfolio can be time consuming if you’re doing it all yourself, but the right, systemised, buy to let investment models make for a very attractive business proposition.

Those who get it right will prosper hugely; those who don't will face potentially disastrous consequences. An increasing number of ‘cash rich, time poor’ first time and existing investors are approaching us with a desire to take advantage of the excellent returns offered by the buy to let market without the associated hassles, so we have developed passive investment options alongside our active investment franchise. If you could use existing equity or other funds to build a solid, sustainable property business that delivers immediate cashflow and long term growth, on a completely passive basis, wouldn’t you want to?

My advice, if you’re considering any opportunity is:

Do proper due diligence on too-good-to-be-true propositions

Speak to previous/existing customers

Visit the company & speak to a Director

Find out if they have a vested interest in ensuring you prosper on an ongoing basis

Remember that property is not a get rich quick scheme, but can deliver significant rewards in the medium to long term

Maximise profits from property to realise a 'best in class' business opportunity

Maximise profits from property to realise a 'best in class' business opportunity

Franchise News from whichfranchise.com

The concept that ‘standing on the shoulders of giants’ is the most efficient route to success has been proven time and again, so it’s no surprise that franchising, as a sector, has continued to flourish, even in these difficult times. Platinum Property Partners – the world's first, and currently only property investing franchise - is not only a prime example, but a market leader, having gone from start up to 40 active Franchise Partners (franchisees) in just two years.

The NatWest/BFA Franchising Survey 2009 reported that most franchisees can expect to break even by the end of year two. Unlike almost all other forms of buy to let investment, the PPP core business model generates such high levels of rental income that each property acquired by a PPP Franchise Partner is expected to be cash-positive to the tune of £1,000+ per month, from the outset. This means their investments truly are assets from the start – servicing their own debt and providing profit on top – which will then bring additional, lump-sum returns and rewards in the medium to long term.

A unique, market-leading proposition

The Founders of PPP, multi-millionaire property investors and entrepreneurs, Steve Bolton, Nick Carlile and Richard Davies, have invested in excess of half a billion pounds in property over the last 20 years, across 14 different countries, and built up outstanding reputations within the international property industry. Their experience in and passion for mentoring, teaching and supporting other people to replicate their own success, together with the robust buy to let investment systems and strategies they had developed in building their own portfolios, led to the launch of the PPP franchise in mid-2007.

Franchise Partners are given personal, intensive initial one to one mentoring and then ongoing training and support, which includes workshops held at least once every two months, direct contact with a business development manager, and access to an exceptional team of property, legal, financial and business experts who are familiar with the PPP franchise strategies and goals. Successful entrepreneurs build their security on multiple streams of income, and with today’s busy lifestyle, flexibility is key. The PPP franchise has been designed to be flexible and non-exclusive, so Franchise Partners can operate their business from home, part-time or full-time, and are not only allowed to have other income streams, but are encouraged to do so.

Over the past twelve months, despite the ongoing economic recession and property market downturn, PPP Franchise Partners have continued to grow and make excellent profits from their UK portfolios. PPP’s business models for maximising return on capital have proved both resilient and adaptable to the current global crisis, and many Franchise Partners are also experiencing elevated profits, thanks to the current low Bank of England base rate and its effect on repayments on tracker mortgages.

Manali, investing in West Drayton, is making £1,700 a month pre-tax profit on one house in multiple occupation (HMO) and £1,800 on another, after the mortgage and all bills associated with the property have been paid. The rental income for properties let in this way – typically 6 rooms rented individually to working adults, rather than letting the whole property to just one family or to students - is significant, and provides an average yield of 14%. Kim and Steve, based in Cardiff, are making just over £2,500 a month from two HMOs, the relatively high outgoings for one property with a significant mortgage repayment, balanced by income of nearly £3,400 a month.

Growing and adapting to the market & demand

While profits have remained high for Franchise Partners, the huge changes in the mortgage lending market over the past year or so have meant a massively increased level of capital input is required to purchase and renovate a typical HMO. PPP is committed to making sure Franchise Partners are able to continue to build their property businesses, so the Founders have put a lot of extra time and resources into training and workshops, and some new strategies have been adopted to take advantage of the best opportunities currently available. Working with passive investors and taking control of a property by way of a lease, rather than buying it outright, are two examples of ways in which PPP is encouraging and helping Franchise Partners to conserve their capital and maximise returns.

In order to further help Franchise Partners accelerate the growth of their business and diversify their portfolios, PPP has also developed passive investment opportunities, which require capital input, but no time commitment. With Platinum Portfolio Builder, PPP turns an investment of around £27,000 (plus a variable amount of working capital, returned at the end of the project term) into significant equity by sourcing, acquiring and managing a small portfolio which is bought at a minimum 25% below current market value, verified by a RICS surveyor. While this option is unlikely to provide cashflow, it is a medium to long term strategy, which still gives a very sound return on capital invested. Many Franchise Partners are already using PPP's systems for acquiring properties like this themselves, and achieving even higher discounts and returns through spending more time sourcing and negotiating deals.

Another passive investment option is a loan scheme, where capital is loaned to one of the Founding Partners to help finance their own property ventures. Interest is paid monthly to the investor at very attractive rates, which vary according to the amount and length of the loan. For Franchise Partners and other high net worth individuals who have significant amounts of capital in the bank or in under-performing investments, this can provide extra income and a sensible choice, while they're using other capital to build their portfolios.

These additional investment options are also available outside the franchise, to selected parties who don’t have the time or desire to be actively involved in building a portfolio, but still want to benefit from the market-leading returns offered by property. These carefully chosen individuals are invited to join as Passive Investment Partners.

A powerful group of like-minded individuals

Partly because of the reputations of the three Founding Partners and partly because of the undeniable quality of its Franchise proposition, PPP has been able to attract leading figures in their relative fields to become part of its ‘power team’. This group of advisors and experts in the business, legal, financial and property spheres, includes individuals and organisations that it would be either impossible or prohibitively expensive for people outside the franchise to access. Both current Franchise Partners and those considering joining, recognise the significant value of being able to gain first-hand training, advice and support in this way.

PPP takes a holistic approach to business and measures the success of its Franchise Partners not just by financial performance, but also by health, happiness and contribution to others. All those involved with the Franchise have a genuine desire to give back - whether that's in terms of money, time or sharing skills - and tend to approach life with a win-win attitude. In terms of the property business, that means looking for deals which make a good investment, but in doing that, also solving a problem for the vendor or property owner, whether that be time, money or situation-related. The rents that PPP Franchise Partners charge are usually higher than other landlords', but the accommodation provided is of a better standard, there are no extra bills for tenants to worry about, and they are treated well. The very high level of occupancy in Franchise Partners' properties is proof of the demand for safe, secure, quality rented accommodation.

In addition to the acclaimed coaches and speakers within the power team, PPP provides personal development workshops, books and other learning materials to help Franchise Partners set and achieve their goals. PPP donates a minimum of 10% of its annual net profits to non-profit and charitable causes, and Franchise Partners are encouraged to join the Founders in a commitment to sustainable and effective giving, sharing the wealth that they create.

Alex Ferretti is a Nutritional Therapist, based in Stratford-upon-Avon, who joined PPP as a foundation Franchise Partner. “The reason I joined the franchise was so that I could benefit from not only the great strategies and support provided on the property investment front, but also the continuous personal development opportunities offered to Franchise Partners, and the focus on health, balance and happiness. This holistic attitude to achieving freedom and success in life is something I had not come across before in any other company, and I can honestly say I am proud to be a part of this group of truly inspirational people.”

To meet the Founding Partners and find out more about this unique franchise opportunity, come along to one of our Platinum Wealth Workshops, held regularly in central London.

Monkey Music announce new franchise manager

Franchise News from whichfranchise.com

Monkey Music, the UK’s premium music group for pre-school children, has announced the appointment of Deborah Stanbury to the newly created role of Franchise Manager.

Monkey Music is an award winning national franchise launched in 1998. More than 50 franchises currently operate in over 300 locations across the UK and Ireland and every week more than 10,000 children visit Monkey Music classes. The company’s Head Office is in Harpenden, Hertfordshire.

Although new to Head Office, Deborah Stanbury has worked with Monkey Music as a franchisee for four years – running the successful Oxford franchise. Previously, Deborah worked in a very senior role in the music industry in London. As Head of Finance and Legal Affairs at Universal Music she played a leading role in contract negotiations with artists such as Elton John, Robbie Williams, Fat Boy Slim, Beautiful South and Pulp.

“I first discovered Monkey Music in 2002 as a client,” says Deborah. “As the mum of a 2 1/2 year old and a 6 month old baby and, at the time new to the Oxford area, I was looking for activities I could enjoy with my children. I was keen to encourage my children to discover and learn music, as playing and listening had always been so important to me.

“We all loved Monkey Music from the first instant and, I’m happy to say, in early 2005 I had the opportunity to take over and run the Oxford franchise.

“Running Monkey Music classes was a wonderful way to be immersed in music and to keep my hand in at business, but still keeping my children at the very heart of my life. As many Monkey Music people – clients and franchisees – will tell you, the experience is enchanting; it’s a really magical learning and development experience, as well as a great business.”

Within three years Deborah had tripled the size of the Oxford business and was, in her words, ‘having the time of my life’. So when, after several interviews and meetings, the call came from Monkey Music founder and Managing Director, Angie Davies, asking her to join the expanding management team, it was still a difficult decision to take.

“In the end I realised I simply had to take the new Franchise Manager position,” say Deborah. “With my children now older, I have more flexibility to travel to take on some office based work. Plus, the chance to play a part in Monkey Music’s expansion and new plans is a really exciting opportunity. Monkey Music is a family business and it really does have a friendly, family feel to it.”

Deborah’s role will be to help identify, brief and assist prospective and existing Monkey Music franchisees. As someone who has been there and done it with the organisation, she’s looking forward to passing on her knowledge about all aspects of running a successful franchise.

“Like any successful business, running a Monkey Music franchise takes hard work and dedication, but the rewards, quite apart from the financial success, are amazing. It’s a sociable, magical, musical world and I’m so happy to be a part of the team.”

Angie Davies, Monkey Music’s Managing Director, commented;

“Deborah has always had ‘star quality’, and I’m thrilled to welcome her to this new role at Monkey Music HQ. I’m sure she will be a valuable member of the team.”

0800 Handyman - a franchise that is always in demand

Franchise News from whichfranchise.com

0800 Handyman is pleased to announce the launch of its first new franchise operation outside the Greater London area.

Julian Henthorn has launched the latest branch in Wakefield, West Yorkshire. Julian previously managed a tools and garage equipment franchise and was keen to continue being his own boss.

The business is owned by The Zockoll Group, whose Chairman, Jim Zockoll founded and developed Dyno-Rod, one of the UK's most successful franchised services. It started trading in 2001 and is already well established in the London area, where it is the leading player with a proven reputation for service excellence.

Now, with a highly experienced franchise management team, 0800 Handyman is expanding, creating exciting and rewarding business ownership opportunities based on a winning service formula.

Julian’s new business specialises in tackling the small DIY tasks and odd jobs that people don’t have the time, inclination or expertise to carry out themselves.

Julian tells us: “I discovered there was a real gap in my local area for a professional handyman service. While there are plenty of specialist contractors to deal with the bigger and more costly jobs, and many odd-job men around, there was no one offering a quality service for handling the multitude of little jobs that never seem to get done!”

Having spent 15 years running his own business, Julian was keen to continue being his own boss. He tells us: “Going into business with 0800 Handyman was the perfect fit for me.”

“I have the benefit of working in partnership with an established organisation with all the experience to help me run a successful business, but I’m still in control of my own destiny.”

Says Julian: “No task is too small, we’ll put up shelves, change light fittings, assemble furniture, mount plasma screens, change locks or repair a dripping tap.” In fact, Julian says he is a ‘man for all reasons’.

0800 Handyman understand their customers’ time is at a premium so specific appointment times are booked rather than morning or afternoon slots. Charges are sensibly based on half hour increments so that the amount invoiced is a more accurate reflection of the time the work takes.

All staff undergo strict vetting procedures, including police checks so clients can be assured of the highest levels of security. Their workmanship is backed by a no quibble guarantee and the company is fully insured.

Julian concludes: “Each day presents a new challenge and its great being out and about meeting people in my local community. People call me out because they have a specific task that they need help with, so I get great job satisfaction with each job, knowing that when I leave a clients’ property I’ve resolved a problem for them!”

Clive Smith, Managing Director, 0800 Handyman said: “We’re delighted to welcome Julian on board. He brings a wealth of valuable business management experience to the company and I have every confidence he will make a real success of his new venture in Wakefield.”

The company is currently seeking applications for franchises across the UK.

Belvoir recruitment franchise drive moves into top gear

Franchise News from whichfranchise.com

Belvoir, one of the UK’s largest independent specialist lettings agencies, enjoyed what is described as “their best show for ten years,” at the 2009 National Franchise Exhibition.

“This was a very successful show for Belvoir and certainly bodes well for our recruitment plans for 2010,” confirmed Dorian Gonsalves, Sales Director. “Mike Goddard, the CEO of Belvoir is also Chairman of the British Franchise Association and his presence, as well as the impact of the talks he was invited to give throughout the day brought a constant stream of visitors to the stand. People met the recruitment team and took the opportunity to chat with existing Franchise Owners about their experiences, which is something we very much encourage. We also hired a living statue from Covent Garden to entertain people and he proved a huge hit with everyone!

“We spoke to potential Franchise Owners from all over Northern Ireland, Scotland and England,” continued Dorian, “There are several exclusive territories available in these areas where the rental market is very strong and we are also looking to expand into parts of Wales. This recruitment drive is part of Belvoir’s overall strategy to increase network growth during 2010.

“Belvoir performed extremely well during the recession and unlike many other businesses continued to experience positive growth. We are looking forward to opening a further 20-25 Franchises over the next 12 months and are now very busy following up all these new leads. There are some fantastic opportunities available for the right people, and previous experience in property management is not required as full training is provided.”

Franchise News from whichfranchise.com

As 2009 draws to a close, Belvoir welcomes three new Franchise Owners to the group.

“We are delighted to welcome Daragh Lee, Denise Rhodes and Richard Cochran to Belvoir and wish them every success with their businesses in Cheadle, Paisley and Bristol,” said Andrew Goddard, Operations Director for Belvoir.

“This represents yet another step forward in Belvoir’s plans to grow and establish outlets in key parts of the country and the fact that we have continued to do so through what are considered to be difficult times for many businesses is a tribute to the resilience and reputation of the Belvoir brand.

“At Belvoir we are very proud to select Franchise Owners of the highest calibre and ensure that they undergo a comprehensive, three-week training course. Following their initial induction Daragh, Denise and Richard will be fully supported by our team of Business Mentors and will also be able to access an ongoing schedule of approximately 50 further training courses. We are continuously offering on site training and webinar courses to Franchise Owners and their staff to ensure they are updated with the latest business principles and technical lettings issues. Cara Clarke, Operations Manager from Belvoir Peterborough was the latest employee to successfully complete the September training course and we wish her well for the future.”

Card Connection Franchisee Wins Top Award for Fifth Time

Franchise News from whichfranchise.com

Joe Sweeny, Card Connection’s franchisee for the West of Ireland has been named the winner of the leading greeting card and publisher’s highly prized Franchisee of the Year award for the fifth time, for achieving the highest level of sales of greeting cards across the company’s team of approximately 85 franchisees. Joe who joined Card Connection nine years ago has steadily built his franchise operation and now distributes greeting cards to central and west Ireland.

“Joe Sweeney and his team, deliver Card Connection greeting cards to almost 400 retail outlets with a buying population of just over a million people,” explains Andrew Cutler, sales and franchise director of Card Connection. “Yet again Joe has proved that his hard work in expanding his business has paid dividends.”

Joe currently operates from 1800sq feet of warehousing with five vans and a team of five of people on the road plus two part time pickers/ packers based in his warehouse.

A number of other franchisees’ achievements were recognised at the Card Connection’s annual conference in Stratford-Upon-Avon including Gabriel McGeown from Armagh and South Tyrone who won the ‘Best Newcomer’ award. Best Improvers went to Andy and Vicki Thompson from Sunderland and Durham who since joining Card Connection in 2004, have doubled the size of their franchise, while Wakefield franchisee, Martin Sweeney was recognised with the Heidi Sulley commemorative cup - a special award for tenacity and team spirit.

Card Connection has limited vacancies for franchisees who are keen to run an expanding business. Successful candidates would ideally have some management experience as, once established, they would be expected to employ a small team, operate a warehouse and have several liveried vans on the road. Card Connection franchisees have recently also started to supply retail outlets with the popular Voltz energy shot drink.

Because the franchise networks in the UK and Ireland are complete, the available opportunities now consist of acquiring an already-established territory from an existing franchisee. These vary in price according to their level of development, but start at £20,000 (+ stock) with earnings potential in excess of £50,000 per annum.

National charity cycle pedals Cash Generator franchise closer to raising £100,000

Franchise News from whichfranchise.com

The final whistle has been blown after Cash Generator successfully completed a national charity cycle which saw its stores take part in a 1000 mile relay-style cycle as part of their pledged commitment to help raise £100,000 for Make-A-Wish Foundation® UK.

From Dundee down to Southampton, cyclists from Cash Generator stores across the country were waved off by their fellow employees, customers, family and friends, as they set out to complete gruelling cycles along local roads and highways, covering a total of 1000 miles across the UK in just five days.

Leading by example, Julian Urry, managing director of Cash Generator, put his passion for pedal power into action to officially launch the national cycle event, appropriately named by staff as Tour de Cash Generator, and start the fundraising.

Julian cycled 100 miles in 7 hours 10 minutes, visiting both the 100th store in Portslade, Brighton, and the first ever Cash Generator store in Bolton, Lancashire.

Julian says: “The response to the charity cycle from Cash Generator stores across the country was so positive it was only right that I took part and led by example. I was more than happy to cycle 100 miles and start off the fundraising for Make-A-Wish – a very worthy cause and one we are delighted to support.

“I am incredibly proud of all the franchise stores and employees that got involved with Tour de Cash Generator, all of whom helped to accomplish a great fundraising event for Make-A-Wish. With the tremendous enthusiasm we have received from all who took part around the UK this could even become an annual event.”

Rebecca Jones, Corporate Account Manager at Make-A-Wish, says: “We are extremely proud of Cash Generator for completing the cycle and excited to discover how much Tour de Cash Generator has raised to help grant magical wishes for children across the UK.”

Make-A-Wish Foundation® UK has a very simple objective – to grant magical wishes to children and young people fighting life-threatening illness. The charity was founded in the UK in 1986 and since then has granted over 5600 wishes.

Card Connection franchise launches licensed Gift Wrap

Franchise News from whichfranchise.com

Leading greeting card publisher and franchisor, Card Connection has today announced the launch of its new licensed gift wrap selection. The new gift wrap which features four separate designs incorporating: Winnie The Pooh, Disney Princess, Spider Man and Thomas The Tank Engine, will be distributed to retail stores throughout the UK through Card Connection’s network of franchisees.

“The new product compliments our current range of juvenile greeting cards,” explains Andrew Cutler, sales and franchise director for Card Connection. “We anticipate strong sales of any stock which features ‘licensed’ characters as they are instantly recognisable to the consumer. This wrap is not linked directly to age like a greeting card and in addition it represents particularly good value, which will add to its broad market appeal.”

The licensed gift wrap has a recommended retail price of £1.29 which includes two sheets of quality paper plus two tags.

Card Connection itself is one of the UK’s largest card publishers and is the market leader in the franchised distribution of greeting cards. Using a proven system, franchisees place greeting card ranges in retail outlets on a ‘consignment’ basis. The award winning merchandising service provided to retailers by local franchisees is second to none and has established the company’s excellent reputation especially within the convenience sector. Card Connection’s key national accounts such as Netto, Budgens, Londis, Spar and Shell.

Card Connection has limited vacancies for franchisees who are keen to run an expanding business. Successful candidates would ideally have some management experience as, once established, they would be expected to employ a small team, operate a warehouse and have several liveried vans on the road.

Because the franchise networks in the UK and Ireland are complete, the available opportunities now consist of acquiring an already-established territory from an existing franchisee. These vary in price according to their level of development, but start at £20,000 (+ stock) with earnings potential in excess of £50,000 per annum.

“The licensed gift wrap selection is a new and exciting addition to our quality product range,” confirms Cutler. “The iconic designs, exclusive to our franchisee network, underline our continued investment in helping our franchisees maximise the profitability of their individual businesses on an ongoing basis.”

The revolution has doubled in power at The Local Bookkeeper in months and features in the FT

Franchise News from whichfranchise.com

The Local Bookkeeper has been inundated with interest and has welcomed many talented and experienced financial management professionals to the network all around the UK. This has been a result of the proven success of the innovative and dynamic business model used by The Local Bookkeeper and has been reflected in recent developments.

In the last six months, 22 franchisees have launched to strengthen the coverage taking the network size to 41 and allowing TLBK UK to secure positions of the nominated bookkeeper, in other national networks and also national accounts to benefit the franchisees.

The businesses who have appointed TLBK to manage their national accounts have specified the requirement for accurate and regular financial information, from qualified and experienced accounting professionals, to increase the success of their business. Many other businesses are realising this need as well and are showing interest in the reliable and trusted brand as a result.

This success can be seen in another arm of the TLBK franchise, The Local Accounts Department, where TLBK franchisees can gain large fees from businesses who wish to outsource their entire Accounts departments, is also going from strength to strength. This is generating large fees for each franchise and is becoming another desirable factor of the TLBK franchise opportunity, by providing lucrative results for the network.

TLBK had a feature article in the Financial Times Entrepreneur column on the 05/09/09 which was written by Mike Southon. As quoted in the article “People become entrepreneurs for a number of reasons: to make money, to control their own destiny, to make a difference to their own and their family’s lives; essentially to have more fun. Strange as it may seem to those of us who loathe spreadsheets, fun for The Local Bookkeeper involves getting your accounts in order and then providing pro-active advice on how best to scale your business without your going broke in the process.”

TLBK was presented as the leader of the financial management industry for businesses by Mike, who is as passionate as TLBK in promoting the success of businesses by helping them to better manage their finances, through regular and accurate financial information. This is further positioning the brand as the trusted partners in the finances of small to medium-sized businesses.

TLBK is due to be featured in future FT articles and also be promoted in the hundreds of presentations that Mike Southon gives to entrepreneurs around the UK every year and featuring as The Local Bookkeeper’s brand ambassador in promotional activities.

Our exclusive national partnership with revolutionary online Accountancy software, Xero, is leading us to launch The Online Bookkeeper brand that will allow franchisee to gain access to a whole new market of small business accounts and therefore gain higher incomes.

The Local Bookkeeper is a professional bookkeeping and financial management firm with offices around the UK.

FASTSIGNS franchise support farm visit for school children

Franchise News from whichfranchise.com

Paul and Lindsay Allison of FASTSIGNS® in Sheffield have given children at Woodhouse West Primary School the chance to visit Whirlow Hall Farm Trust for an educational two day experience.

This is because FASTSIGNS Sheffield & Chesterfield is a member of the ‘480 Club’ which coordinates donations from local businesses with residential or day visits for local schools. It especially seeks to help schools that might not otherwise get the chance and where more than 25% of children receive free school meals or are in special needs groups.

Twelve children from Woodhouse West Primary School spent two nights at the farm from Wednesday 7 October to Friday 9 October learning about animal care and what it’s like to run a mixed farm. They carried out regular farm jobs such as feeding goats, collecting eggs and grooming horses.

Head Teacher John Bennett said, “This is the second group of children from our school to benefit thanks to FASTSIGNS’ support. The children love staying at the farm. We don’t have the resources for special trips like this so everyone’s thrilled that we’ve had this opportunity.”

Paul from FASTSIGNS added, “It’s great being able to make such a difference to local kids with our donation. We’re especially pleased that Woodhouse West Primary has benefited because we know that ecology, food and green issues are hot topics for the staff and pupils there.”

For further information about Whirlow Hall Farm Trust or joining 480 Club call 0114 235 2678.

The recession is not bad news for Dent Wizard franchise

Franchise News from whichfranchise.com

If you believed everything you read in the paper you would think that the economic climate is in free fall and that the motor industry specifically is doomed

The new car market has taken a bit of a prang during the recession – but that’s not bad news for all businesses, especially the Dent Wizard franchise network

“The Dent Wizard business across the UK has gone from strength to strength this year states Steve Calvert, Franchise Manager. “The invoicing through the Franchise Network is at record levels” thanks to the ambition, drive and energy of the Franchisees”

It makes it even more pleasing, to be in a position where the franchisees have shown that with commitment, energy, enthusiasm and a lot of tenacity there is still business to be won, and a profit to be made.

September proved to be a record month for the Dent Wizard franchise with revenues being at the highest ever level since the franchise business was launched in 2006.

September was not an isolated performance. 2009 has been a great year with a consistent growth over 2008, franchisee billings have increased by over 90% in the same period of the previous year.

There are 37 franchisees in the Dent Wizard franchise network, all with their own exclusive territory, all working hard to develop their own future.

The demand for the services provided by the franchisees is high says Steve, which is why we are holding regular discovery days at our offices at Dunton Park. This is proving to be an ideal opportunity for people to look at the franchise and learn about the business including the training and support.

There are still vacant territories available for self motivated, enthusiastic individuals who are looking to take the step to become their own boss, and in control of their destinies.

Recession, what recession, there has never been a better time to start your own business.

Franchisees do not need any formal accountancy qualifications as full training is given, but you do need to have a relevant career background, be self motivated, disciplined, ambitious, hardworking and keen to build a substantial successful business.

Auditel franchisee runsThe Bupa Great North Run for Diabetes UK

Franchise News from whichfranchise.com

The Bupa Great North Run is firmly established as the world’s most popular half-marathon since it first took place on June 28, 1981. Today it attracts some 50,000 competitors from all over the world. Auditel Consultant Daryn Dodge decided to take part this month to raise money for the charity, Diabetes UK.

Daryn says: “I am not quite sure how I got here but here I am about to embark on a half-marathon! Actually I do know, as I specifically choose to run for Diabetes UK for a couple of reasons. My late mum had diabetes, and as I do too, I thought the training would help me.”

Daryn revealed that the last time he ran at all, was during football training about twenty years ago and so this really was a challenge! What’s more his schedule was seriously impacted by a calf injury, but he managed to get through four weeks of good training. He said he didn't have a target time, as getting to the finish line under his own steam without the aid of the St John’s Ambulance would be good for him!

After the race, Daryn said: “Well, the Great North Run was an amazing experience. As I had some really generous donations - £1,000 so far - I thought it was important to make a serious attempt and not just "walk round". Considering that my restricted training had not let me go beyond five miles, I was surprised that I felt quite comfortable up to ten miles. Then it was a different story as my shortened training was seriously exposed. I didn't know you could experience such pain but once I was into the last three miles I was determined to make it to the line. I certainly managed that. I ran every step of the way without stopping or walking even once and finished in 3 hours 33 minutes and 19 seconds! This morning, I can't believe that I ran for over 3 1/2 hours, but my legs are definitely reminding me that I did!”

This year, there will be great support for charities by Auditel consultants. This is Daryn’s story. Alan Ford completed the Ironman Triathlon for Cancer Research in August. Chris Gordon recorded one of the fastest ever Pennine Way hikes in September for a Gambian charity, ‘Wonder Years’. Jack Pokoj will take part in the New York Marathon for Breast Cancer Care in November.

Franchise News from whichfranchise.com

Nick Beaumont-Jones has just been elected as the Vice-President of Swindon Chamber of Commerce. The Swindon Chamber is part of the Thames Valley Chamber of Commerce Group and assists businesses in Swindon to achieve their full potential.

Nick spent many years in senior retail management throughout the UK and overseas. He joined Auditel, the UK’s premier franchise cost management specialists, in January this year. Nick works with small to medium size businesses throughout the area, helping them to manage their critical business costs. As an active member of the Swindon business community, Nick has been heavily involved in the regeneration plans for the town centre for a number of years.

Nick says: “Having worked at a strategic level in Swindon for more than eleven years, I understand the issues facing small businesses. The Swindon Chamber of Commerce is in prime position to be the catalyst for bringing together the commercial interests in the area with the local authority and the various industry interest groups – all of whom want the same thing: for Swindon to be the commercial powerhouse it could so easily be.”

Auditel are closely connected with Chambers of Commerce throughout the UK. Their consultants manage costs for the membership of many chambers, including Bedfordshire & Luton, Birmingham, Crawley, Horsham, Doncaster, Shropshire, Thames Valley and Mid & West Wales.

Jan Pro UK's First Master Franchisee - Mark Sinderberry

Franchise News from whichfranchise.com

Welcome to the Jan-Pro team Mark, can you tell us a bit about your background?

Thank you, I’m looking forward to the challenge!

I was born in Sydney, Australia and moved to the UK six and a half years ago. I studied accounting at the University of Canberra and started out in KPMG Canberra before moving into commercial accounting roles. In 1995 I became Chief Executive at the ACT Brumbies Super 12 rugby franchise. I spent six years in this position before moving onto the position of Chief Executive at Saracens rugby club.

How have your previous roles prepared you for taking on the Jan-Pro master franchise in London?

My roles as Chief Executive at both ACT Brumbies and Saracens enabled me to gain an insight into how a brand can become established on and off the field. It also prepared me to deal with the lows of business as well as the highs. Saracens reaching the semi-finals of the Heineken Cup in 2008 and the sold out matches at Vicarage Road are the fondest moments of my time with Saracens.

What made you choose Jan-Pro?

I was initially attracted to Jan-Pro due to the fact that I will be a regional master which provides me with the opportunity to assist franchisees on deciding the investment level that best suits their particular situation. Through the provision of proven systems, support services, and training I can also assist to develop their own successful business. Jan-Pro is new to the UK market and I find the prospect of building the brand here extremely exciting.

My interest in franchising originated from colleagues who were engaged with franchises in the past. I find that the training provided by Jan-Pro is extremely thorough and helpful. I take great comfort in the fact that the information and systems are of the highest quality and that customers will be provided with a dedicated and motivated group of franchisees.

How do you expect the franchise to grow in the coming 12 months?

I hope that there will be in excess of 20 franchises in the West London area creating over 100 jobs.

My initial focus is purely on London and I hope to roll out Jan-Pro progressively within this catchment area. However, I believe ‘lots of little steps’ will be key to bringing Jan-Pro to other areas of the UK.

What is the level of investment involved in the business?

Each franchise unit will require an investment of £10,000, while my initial investment was £100,000.

How do you imagine/hope the business will be in 5 years?

In the next five years I hope that the business will spread to all parts of London, with each franchisee having successfully developed their own business replicating the proven system of quality and affordable cleaning.

Signs Express franchise - not just full of hot air

Franchise News from whichfranchise.com

Celebrating 20 years in the business, Signs Express awards its top achievers and shows its appreciation for the group’s hard work at this year’s Signs Express Convention.

Taking place every two years, the convention sees a number of members of the group from all over the UK and Ireland visit the outskirts of Norwich at the De Vere Dunston Hall hotel, and this year was no exception. Spread over the course of two days, franchisees were able to hear the latest in developments across the network as well as new business opportunities available to increase turnover and enhance their customer base.

But it wasn’t all just what could be achieved in the future, the weekend also celebrated the past 20 years as well as what individual franchises had accomplished over their own years of trading.

The Signs Express Awards marked the landmark celebration with an elegant awards ceremony where centres put forward their own work to be judged for the top spot. Competition was tough with a number of worthy winners in the mix but the final decision rested with the Signs Express directors and a selection of independent judges.

This year saw longstanding franchisee Ken Bevis from Signs Express (N. & N.E. Lincs) crowned Franchisee of the Year having continued to perform outstandingly and exceed expectations even during the current recession. A Special Achievement was awarded to Dave and Anne Hitch at Signs Express (Peterborough) for their approach and adjustments made to the current economic downturn - the husband and wife team are also currently in the finals of the BFA Franchisee of the Year Awards taking place early next month.

As well as the award decisions at HQ, franchisees were also given the opportunity to nominate a fellow franchisee for their helpfulness. The results were clear with the award going to Stuart Harrison at Signs Express (Milton Keynes) for his willingness to go the extra mile.

The Best Sign Project Award was scooped by Signs Express (Reading) for halo illuminated stainless steel lettering fitted onto a curved glass face for BDO Stoy Hayward; and Signs Express (Warwick) sped into first place winning the Best Vehicle Graphics Project Award for its work carried out for Dobson & White.

Commenting on the weekend’s events managing director Craig Brown said: “With it being our 20th anniversary we really wanted to celebrate the success of both the network and the individuals who have really made an impact on Signs Express as a whole. The awards are our way of recognising and celebrating these success stories. It’s never easy choosing winners from such a diverse group of franchising talent but this year’s winners have proved very worthy of their titles.”

Since its inception in 1989, Signs Express has developed into the largest sign company in the UK and Ireland providing a complete design, manufacture and fitting service for all forms of signage including interior and exterior signs, vehicle graphics, banners, window graphics and exhibition display products.

Silverdaze franchise founder shines at Grazia 02 X entrepreneur of the year awards

Franchise News from whichfranchise.com

It was a night of glitz and glamour for Diana Serle who attended the Grazia O2 X Entrepreneur of the Year Awards as a hopeful contender, last Tuesday. The swanky event, hosted by actress and Big Brother presenter, Davina McCall, was held on the 31st floor of Centre Point, with views stretching across an impressive London skyline.

Guests were treated to a lavish serving of food and drink at the VIP reception, which included fish-and-chip canapés, profiteroles, and top-notch champagne.

Keen to demonstrate that all that glitters isn’t gold, Serle, who founded her unique jewellery party plan business nine years ago – and who is one of the franchising industry’s most notable female advocates – wore a stunning pink dress, along with an ornate necklace chosen from her own personal collection of signature Silverdaze pieces.

Says Diana: “It was a truly was a fabulous evening. It’s wonderful to have received so many accolades over the last couple of weeks.”

Serle was one of eight finalists selected from more than 500 entrants. On the judging panel were founder of beauty empire Space NK, Nicky Kinnaird; Grazia’s Editor-in-Chief, Jane Bruton; and Head of Small Business Marketing at 02, Simon Devonshire.

“The initial judging process was intensive,” says Diana, “but the people on the panel seemed to like Silverdaze a great deal. Simon Devonshire kept on saying how impressed he was with me, and with the brand. And Nicky Kinnaird told me that she thought Silverdaze was growing at exactly the right pace to properly support our growing network of franchisees. They were very complimentary; their comments are a powerful reminder of how far Silverdaze has come in the last nine years.”

“Of course, I was disappointed not to win the grand prize,” she adds, “but being the South East winner and attending the Grazia O2 event at Centre Point has given me a real boost – so I feel like a winner! On top of that, we were the only franchised business to get through to the final. I hope that my success paves the way for other women with their own franchised businesses.”

Since winning in the South East region, and appearing in Grazia, Diana and her team at Silverdaze have experienced an explosion in the number of calls from women keen to find out more about the Silvedaze franchise opportunity.

Says Operations Director, Richard Nimse: “Thanks to Diana’s entry into the Awards, and her appearance in Grazia magazine, the level of leads we’ve had from potential franchisees has skyrocketed. There’s also been a massive spike in the number of hits we’ve seen on the website, with our average number of page visits shooting up from 3,000 to almost 12,000 per day.

He adds: “This level of national exposure has helped the network, and increased the level of party enquiries coming in.

“Just being short-listed for the Grazia O2 X Award has been great for everyone involved in Silverdaze. It just goes to show what the right kind of publicity can do for a growing franchised brand.”

Recognition Express franchise helps keep adventurer alive

Franchise News from whichfranchise.com

When world-class climber Leo Houlding climbed to the top of Mount Asgard and jumped 1,350 metres to the bottom in a wing-suit and parachute, there was one man in Cumbria holding his breath.

Neal Benson from Recognition Express had been following the 28-year-old’s progress closely on the internet. Why? Because of Leo’s port-a-ledge.

Neal, owner of Grange over Sands based Recognition Express Cumbria, was asked to print the name of Leo’s sponsors (Berghaus, Nokia and DMM) on Leo’s expedition tent.

“I’d been talking to a customer who wanted a mug for a school reunion. Then along came one of Leo Houlding’s team, and asked me to work on something that was going to help keep them alive in one of the most perilous adventures in the world,” said Neal.

“Leo’s a local hero in my book. And being able to play a small part in his achievement gave us a bit of a buzz.”

Cumbrian-born Leo is the champion speed climber who famously raced TV’s petrol-head Jeremy Clarkson to the top of the Verdon Gorge in France, pitting his hands and feet against a fast car, and he won.

In his latest expedition, he and American Sean Leary skydived into the Arctic Circle, spent two weeks scaling the sheer cliff face of twin-peaked Mount Asgard on Baffin Island, Canada. They then jumped off the top before a week long hike out.

Self confessed adrenalin Junkie Leo said ‘"The Asgard Project was the most epic adventure you can imagine. We skydived into a mile high cliff in the arctic and spent 14 days climbing one of the hardest, most impressive walls in the world. Hit by a vicious ice storm half way up the face we were trapped inside our port-a-ledges for 4 days. 100 mph freezing winds outside meant the fly sheet of the port-a-ledge was the only thing between us and hyperthermia. Screen printing can damage such a vital membrane, thankfully Neal understood the seriousness of the task, our fly sheet weathered the storm.’’

Neal actually had two attempts at printing the tent when one of Leo’s sponsors dropped out. “24 hours before the lads were due to fly out to Canada, they asked us to remove one of the sponsor’s names and replace it with another. We’d never done that to a tent before, but it worked really well.”

A film entitled ‘The Asgard Project’ is being made of the trip and Neal is hoping that his Berghaus, Nokia & DMM badged tent will be in it. “It’s the closest Recognition Express Cumbria will ever get to Hollywood. And I’m dead chuffed,” Leo says the film is ‘going to blow people’s minds. Think Point Break meets Lord of the Rings but real.’

Further information about the trip can be found at www.theasgardproject.com

Recognition Express is the European market leader in corporate recognition products, specialising in everything from signs and name badges to promotional products, employee awards, business gifts and poster printing. It also handles a full range of branded and corporate clothing, school uniforms and personalised sportswear.

Franchise News from whichfranchise.com

Sandra Redmond, mother and successful MOLLY MAID Franchise Owner from South West London, has been crowned ‘Franchisee of the Year’ at this year’s prestigious British Franchise Association/ HSBC’S ‘Franchisee of the Year Awards’ held at a glittering black-tie award ceremony at Birmingham’s International Convention Centre on the 1st October. Against fierce competition, Sandra was able to demonstrate to the pre-eminent judging panel how she has achieved ‘Success in Challenging Times’.

Sandra, who has been running her Wimbledon MOLLY MAID franchise for over 14 years, has driven her business to impressive heights, continuing to increase her sales and profits over the last two years despite experiencing some of the worst trading conditions in her career. In the face of adversity, Sandra has implemented various initiatives from creative marketing activities to cost control systems in order to maintain her number one position in the MOLLY MAID network whilst also increasing her annual sales by nearly 9%.

Delighted on securing the Award, she says, “This makes me so very proud. Gaining the title of ‘Franchisee of the Year’ in such a challenging and highly competitive market is an enormous accolade. It is tremendous recognition for all the hard work my staff have put into the business and I thank all those who have supported me this year. This has certainly spurred me on to achieve even greater success next year!”

Celebrating its 25th Anniversary, MOLLY MAID is the UK’s largest professional domestic cleaning brand with 350 MOLLY MAID cars on the road and over 800 MOLLY MAID staff making peoples’ houses sparkle from top to bottom.

Pam Bader, CEO, MOLLY MAID UK comments on Sandra’s success, “MOLLY MAID is thrilled to have such a worthy ambassador of our brand. Sandra’s business has grown from strength to strength over the years and now she has set a high standard for others in the network to aspire to and with whom she can share best practice. Sandra is a true example of the level of success a Franchise Owner is able to achieve by following a proven, focussed business plan. Congratulations Sandra on a very well deserved win.”

robertson technologies...the story so far

Franchise News from whichfranchise.com

In 2005, Hamish Robertson started his business from a one-bedroom flat in Edinburgh’s Easter Road. The eponymous robertson technologies soon outgrew its humble beginnings and the IT support and consultancy firm now employs 6 staff from its converted warehouse home in Leith.

The business turns over £300 000 and has 50 clients on its books, although its recently launched management franchise scheme should see these figures grow dramatically over the coming years. This will result in 5 new staff in Edinburgh plus create up to 50 jobs across Scotland over the next 5 years as franchises are awarded across the Scottish territories.

Similarly, an acquisition made in Glasgow has given the firm a foothold in the west coast market, which it is currently developing.

Hamish set up the business at university when he realised how much demand there was for small businesses to back up their data in a convenient, reliable and regular way.

Once he had started working with a number of clients, Hamish found their need for ongoing computer support and consultancy was even greater than their need for data backup and this has now become the commercial focus for the business.

robertson technologies has two unique selling points as a company. It only focuses on commercial clients and it does all of its work onsite at clients’ offices.

Most computer support businesses seek to service their customers remotely and deal with them over the phone or online. However robertson technologies believes that a personal relationship works much more effectively and contracts engineers to spend a certain amount of time working onsite with each client on a monthly basis.

This is flexible and can be arranged to suit the changing needs of each client, but it means their systems are continually serviced and kept up to date, ultimately generating fewer problems for them on a day-to-day basis. Crucially, the engineers onsite are available to help the staff who use the systems and this proactive personal approach goes a long way in producing a more confident and knowledgeable workforce.

Should a problem arise out of the blue, then clients can always get in touch with their dedicated engineer and get help for specific issues.

By only catering for SME commercial clients, robertson technologies has maintained its focus on their needs, without becoming distracted by other customer sets. This ensures all of the firm’s energy is targeted in the same place and has helped the business grow in line with its clients.

By way of example, the business’s first ever client, anti poverty organisation Faith in Community Scotland, has expanded its staff base from 4 to 20 in the time it has been on board and remains a client to this day.

These two unique selling points make robertson technologies distinct in the market and its success in the first four years of trading show there is a strong demand for this more thoughtful approach.

As a management franchise opportunity these defining factors create a significant advantage for those looking to get involved and the firm is searching for commercially minded individuals with a strong set of sales and customer service skills.

Management of a franchise will not be best suited to those with a love of IT, seeking to indulge their passion and spend their time unravelling technical issues for clients. Instead it will be for those looking to manage and grow a business that can in turn employ passionate experts to deliver the highest level of customer service.

robertson technologies aims to award 20 franchises over the next 3 years and while catering for businesses across the commercial sector, will keep professional services customers at its core.

Franchise News from whichfranchise.com

“HSBC Commercial Banking has proudly supported the franchising industry, now worth an annual £11.4 billion to the UK’s economy, for more than 25 years.

This year’s National Finalists demonstrate the franchise model working at its best and we congratulate them on reaching the Finals of the 2009 bfa/HSBC Franchisee of the Year Awards”

- Cathryn Hayes, HSBC’s Head of Franchising

The UK’s top franchisees will gather in Birmingham this week to battle it out for the first prize in the 2009 British Franchise Association’s (bfa)/HSBC Franchisee of the Year Awards, sponsored by HSBC Bank and Express Newspapers.

The 10 National Finalists, who include a mother providing football classes for children under seven and a father who runs a franchise specialising in humane pest control, are now hoping to scoop the top title and a cheque for £5,000, courtesy of HSBC.

The Winner will be announced at a black-tie dinner at the International Convention Centre (ICC) in Birmingham on 1st October. Cheques for £3,000 and £2,000 will also be presented to the Silver and Bronze Winners respectively.

Battling it out to be named ‘Franchisee of the Year’ are:

Little Kickers – North and North West London

Julia Levene (41) opened Little Kickers in 2004 after her two-year-old son became ball obsessed. The business provides weekly football classes for children under seven. Julia currently runs 30 classes per week across North and North West London.

McDonald’s – Balham, Mitcham, Peckham and Sutton

Mike Smith has come a long way since he acquired his first McDonald’s franchise in Mitcham in May 2000. Since then he has opened three more restaurants in Sutton, Balham and Peckham.

Molly Maid – South West London

Sandra Redmond opened the specialist cleaning company Molly Maid in 1995 and has held the Wimbledon franchise for over 14 years. She has driven the business to impressive heights in South West London.

NBC Bird and Pest Solutions – Portsmouth, Bournemouth and Southampton

Tim Lester (50) was one of NBC Bird and Pest Solution’s first franchisees, taking on the Portsmouth, Bournemouth and Southampton area in November 2004. Tim runs the franchise with his wife, Karen (43).

O2 – Birmingham, Corby, Trowbridge, Haze and Stratford-upon-Avon

After ten years experience in the mobile phone business, husband and wife Surjit and Balvinder Dhillon, both 47, became franchisees of the well-known brand o2. They are now one of only two franchisees operating five stores in the network.

Rosemary Conley Diet & Fitness – Norwich

Sarah Skelton (39) first joined the Rosemary Conley organisation as a client. Having succeeded in losing over four stone, Sarah opened a franchise of her own in September 1998. Since then, she has built the Norwich franchise into one of the most successful in the network.

Signs Express – Peterborough

Anne (49) and David Hitch (47) bought an existing Signs Express franchise in 2002. They now serve as the one-stop-shop for all forms of signs and graphics in the Peterborough area.

TaxAssist – St. Albans

After being made redundant, Mark Fordham (46) opened a St. Albans based TaxAssist Accountants franchise. He has since developed one of the largest and most successful practices in the network.

Water Babies – Banbury, Oxon.

Water Babies is the UK’s largest baby swimming organisation, running classes from birth to four years old. Tamsin Brewis (48) bought her franchise in 2004 and has steadily built up the business. They now teach over 1,000 babies per week.

Wiltshire Farm Foods – Cannock and North Coventry

Kieran Green and Beverley Watts opened Wiltshire Farm Foods in 2002. Now in their eighth year as franchisees, they have seen the challenges presented by the current economic climate as an opportunity to fine tune their business and confirm their position as market leader.

This year’s National Finalists impressed the judging panel, chaired by bfa President Sir Bernard Ingham, by demonstrating how they have achieved ‘Success in Challenging Times’ – the theme of this year’s Awards.

HSBC’s Head of Franchising, Cathryn Hayes, said: “The 2009 National Finalists are excellent examples of how the determination and hard work of the franchisee, combined with the franchisor’s supportive approach, generates success at both individual and network levels, even during a challenging economic climate.

“HSBC is proud of its role in supporting so many successful franchisees over the last 25 years and we are delighted to be in partnership with this dynamic and important market sector. We are committed to helping new and existing franchisee customers in these challenging times and have recruited more relationship managers throughout the UK to allow us to spend more time with our customers. We also provide a range of financial solutions to help them trade and have developed online support tools such as our Knowledge Centre and Business Network.”

Brian Smart, Director General of the bfa, added: “These prestigious Awards celebrate the UK’s best franchisees.

“This year it was harder than ever choosing 10 Finalists – all great examples of how focus and drive, when supplemented by the support of a franchisor, results in a successful business despite today’s economic downturn."

Express Newspapers’ Franchise and Business Opportunities Advertising Sales Manager, Geraldine Haenow, said: “The National Finalists are fantastic ambassadors for the franchising industry and an inspiration to all those thinking of starting up on their own.

“They should be proud of their achievements in being named a Finalist and we look forward to sharing their success story with our readers.”

Women encouraged into franchising

Franchise News from whichfranchise.com

The franchising industry has recognised the huge untapped potential among women as prospective franchise owners and has established a new independent group to inspire, educate and support women who are looking to enter franchising.

The “Encouraging Women into Franchising” (EWIF) Group is made up of Franchisors, Franchisees, Franchise service providers, banks, women’s support groups and national support agencies. It also has the support of the British Franchising Association.

The new group supports women looking to become franchisees and existing franchisors where women are under-represented as franchisees. It is also seeks to encourage existing women business owners to consider franchising as a way of expanding their companies.

Diana Serle, EWIF Group Member and Managing Director of the Silverdaze (UK) Ltd franchise commented: “There are many opportunities in franchising for women, which the EWIF Group hopes to highlight to both prospective women franchisees and franchisors looking to attract women franchisees.”

The EWIF Group recently surveyed prospective women franchisees at The Franchise Show and the British and International Franchise Exhibition and found that a third of respondents felt that barriers existed which make it difficult for women to operate a franchise. However, this seems not to be the view of women who are already involved in the industry. Clive Sawyer, Chairman of the EWIF Group, explains: “In a similar survey asked among existing franchisors and franchisees carried out for the NatWest/British Franchise Association Franchise Survey 2009, only 3% of respondents agreed, highlighting a disparity between women considering franchising and those who are already involved in the sector.” Sawyer continues, “There is clearly a need for EWIF to highlight the opportunities for women in franchising.”

More than seventy people involved in franchising attended the national launch of the ‘Encouraging Women into Franchising’ (EWIF) Group at an event at Wotton House Hotel in Dorking, Surrey on Tuesday 22nd September, where participants were informed of the EWIF Group’s objectives, how the group inspires, educates and supports women into franchising, the new Women’s Franchise Ambassador Network, and the new EWIF website www.ewif.org.

Guest speakers Diana Serle and Tina Kemp outlined their involvement with the EWIF Group and their experiences as a Franchisor and Franchisee, respectively.

Clive Sawyer was thrilled with the attendance and enthusiasm generated at the event: “Women owned businesses contribute one fifth of all small business output and represent a vast untapped resource for the franchising sector,” he explains. “EWIF Group members inspire, educate and support women who are considering, or who are already involved in franchising, through a network of Ambassadors. By offering tailored support to existing women business owners and women considering becoming business owners, we will help to redress the imbalance of women owned businesses across the country.”

Strange Stories from the Spettro franchise Call Centre

Strange Stories from the Spettro franchise Call Centre

Franchise News from whichfranchise.com

The acts of the criminal fraternity never fail to amaze us at Spettro as calls come into our head office to handle claims of damage to properties. Most recently, Brighton was the location of a stand-off between two men perched on a rooftop to evade arrest; Tony Smith, the founding director of Spettro explains:

“We took a call from Christine Corbett of Western Row, Worthing, who needed some repair work to her roof due to criminal damage which I thought was quite odd – how could someone cause criminal damage to a roof? However Christine was keen to explain the situation!”

“It emerged that due to police stand-off her roof had been vandalised by two criminals who were being pursued by the local Police Force. The two men were wanted in connection with a knife attack and had climbed on to the roof of Christine’s home to avoid their pursuers. When the Police caught up with the two men at Western Row, the men (aged 19 and 17 years old) proceeded to hurl abuse and roof tiles at the Police negotiators below. The two men were eventually apprehended with the additional charges of criminal damage and affray and Christine could get on with the task of sorting out the damage to her home.”

Christine is a qualified Psychoanalyst and dealt with the drama with good humour, “It all happens in ‘downtown Worthing’ but all is now quiet on the ‘Western Row Front’!”

Tony continued, “This is not the only odd claim call we have had through to our head office 24/7 call centre. Last year we had a call through from a homeowner in Mansfield when a very creative burglar had gained access to their property by removing loose roof tiles and climbing through the loft space!”

Spettro deals with claims for flood, fire, storm, impact damage and burglaries. They also are involved in rental property refurbishments and detecting the origin of water leaks. Spettro Limited is regulated by the Financial Services Authority which allows them to loss assess and mediate with all the major insurance companies, a service which is free of charge to the insured.

With 32 territories already sold, the Spettro franchise is a popular choice so why not contact Spettro to request a prospectus by clicking on the link below:

Century for Martin & Co Premises Manager

Franchise News from whichfranchise.com

Premises manager of the UK’s no.1 letting agent, Emma Dakiniewicz reached reached a career milestone this week. Emma has successfully completed 100 shop fits, helping Martin & Co franchise owners to make their mark in their local area. 100 shop fits is an impressive achievement for any individual or organisation, but Emma has managed to achieve this figure in just over 2 years! This figure once again underlines the success and consistency of Martin & Co, who are again bucking the trend by continuing to grow at a record rate, and now have 170 offices throughout the UK.

Emma was delighted at reaching the century landmark “It is fantastic being part of such as successful franchise whose growth, since I joined in 2007, has increased year on year. I have been involved with commercial premises since leaving university in 2002 and I still enjoy the satisfaction of negotiating a great deal for a shop unit and seeing the process through to being fully fitted out as a Martin & Co office.”

“Working with Martin & Co I have averaged 40 completed shop fits a year consisting of new franchise owners and existing franchise owners expanding into second branches within their territory. Over the last year the recession has increased the availability of commercial units and there are fantastic deals to be done. Matched with lettings being a recession proof business we have already achieved 28 finished shop fits in 2009 and it’s only September!”

“I’m looking forward to continuing to assist with the sourcing of premises for Martin & Co as we continue to focus on achieving our aim of 500 franchised offices over the next 5 years. It has never been a more exciting time to be part of the UK’s No 1 Letting Agent!”

On reaching this milestone John Coupe, National Operations Director, commented “Emma works incredibly hard, covering the whole of the UK identifying potential premises, negotiating with commercial landlords and project managing the shop-fitting process to Martin & Co’s exacting Brand Standards. We are very pleased that she is part of the Martin & Co team.”

Franchise News from whichfranchise.com

Family team takes up Drain Doctor franchise in Northampton

A team of a father and two sons – Chris, Daniel and Chris Chaplin – are taking on the Northampton franchise of Drain Doctor Plumbing – and they are looking forward to the challenge of taking on the competition in the area.

Both Chris senior and Daniel have experience running their own plumbing and drainage business where they were contracted to one firm.

Chris senior has 14 years experience serving the plumbing and drainage needs of the Northampton area. Now he has taken on the task of building up the business of Drain Doctor with the help of his two sons, offering local businesses and householders ‘dazzling’ levels of service in an industry that is plagued by ‘cowboy’ operators.

Chris said: “I have always been conscious of the need to provide excellent customer service to retain customers. If you don’t provide quality service they simply don’t come back. The best advertising is always word of mouth. There is a great business opportunity in providing a plumbing service which really meets the needs of customers.

“We were looking for a new challenge and when were looking around we found that Drain Doctor has just this approach. As a franchisee I will be running my own business but with the back-up of a national organisation that will help to ensure we can deliver on our promises.”

Those promises include a full 24 hour per day seven day per week service with no call out charges and fixed-price, no obligation quotes with a full guarantee on all work.

Drain Doctor technicians are trained not just with technical skills – including the latest techniques such as closed circuit camera drain surveys and no-dig drain repairs – but in customer care that is reflected in such things as wearing overshoes while in customers’ homes and clearing up carefully after every job.

Chris and his sons will be starting their business in Northampton with another experienced technician. With Chris senior running the office and three vans on the road he hopes to be able to improve his work/life balance. “I am a workaholic starting at 6:30 in the morning and sometimes not finishing before 10:30 at night. We are hoping to expand the business from three to five vans over the next two years so that should help me to achieve that balance.

“I am looking forward to building a business which is relatively recession proof, even in a recession, people with a plumbing emergency still need to call a plumber. We aim to ensure that because of our reputation and levels of service, the plumber they call will be Drain Doctor.”

Domino's franchisee sails through franchise territory with ease

Franchise News from whichfranchise.com

Colin Tomlin is a great example of a Domino’s franchisee who chose to take his career in a new and tasty direction after 25 years in the Navy.

Colin had always wanted to be his own boss and leaving the Navy gave him an opportunity to do just that. Having attended a franchise exhibition, he drew up a shortlist of the businesses he was most interested in and narrowed it down based on each franchise’s figures and feasibility. “I chose Domino’s as it offered the greatest potential financial rewards and future opportunities,” Colin explained.

Having completed Domino’s franchise development programme and with the support of the head office team, Colin opened his first store in Chesterfield in 2004. “I built up vast range of skills during my time in the Navy, which were easily transferable to my business,” said Colin. “The management and leadership training I received was second to none and has been very useful in running my Domino’s stores. The Navy taught me the importance of fun, humour and camaraderie, which I try to maintain among my team. Team building activities I learnt have also been extremely useful and have helped me to achieve excellent staff retention rates.”

Following the success of his first store, Colin took on his second in Worksop earlier this year and has not looked back since leaving the Navy. He said: “Franchising is ideal for people like me, who want a change of career and all the benefits of running your own business. My Domino’s franchise gives me the flexibility to work around family commitments, while running my own successful business, which is something I’d always wanted to do.

“Owning my own business is everything I hoped it would be. I’m working towards a goal of five to seven stores in total – that’ll be enough for at least one for each of my sons and me!”

Chipsaway extends successfully TV campaign to 'Dave'

Franchise News from whichfranchise.com

The pilot TV advertising campaign by leading SMART (Small to Medium Area Repair Technology) automotive paint repairers ChipsAway has proved so successful that the company has booked a further Autumn run over a longer period, which also includes exposure on ‘Dave’, the hugely popular entertainment channel.

“Following our first ever TV campaign, ChipsAway has had its most successful Summer ever,” confirms Lloyd Evans, Chief Executive.

The campaign, which ran on a number of digital channels, such as Gold, Bravo, Hallmark and VH1, commenced in June. Response was immediate and in July alone, ChipsAway’s National Call Centre took over 11,000 enquiries for repairs on behalf of its nationwide network of 350 franchisees.

“Over the Summer months we have received in excess of 32,000 enquiries, continuing a strong growth curve since the beginning of this year,” adds Lloyd Evans. “During 2008, we passed on £11m worth of potential new business opportunities to our franchise network and in the first half of 2009 we saw like for like figures increase by over 70%, which is phenomenal!”

A further impact of the TV campaign has been a substantial increase in interest by would-be investors in a ChipsAway franchise. Free find-out-more Open Days are now run on a weekly basis, rather than fortnightly as before, to meet demand. Franchisees operate from a fully equipped workshop, using the unique ChipsAway paint system to repair minor automotive paintwork damage such as scratches, bumper scuffs and ‘kerbed’ alloy wheels.

ChipsAway will be at the forthcoming National Franchise Exhibition, held at the NEC on 2/3 October 2009.

Franchise News from whichfranchise.com

Football fan Peter Cordwell is tackling a new challenge – in spite of the recession. The father of five, who enjoys nothing more than watching his talented son play football in his spare time, will be using his experience to develop the Watford franchise of Drain Doctor Plumbing.

An experienced drainage technician, he has worked for other plumbing and drainage companies but felt that the time was right to start out on his own. Now he has taken on the task of building up the business of Drain Doctor in Watford, offering local businesses and householders ‘dazzling’ levels of service in an industry that is plagued by ‘cowboy’ operators.

Peter said: “I looked at a number of franchise businesses and I found that Drain Doctor offered the best approach to support and customer service. As a franchisee I will be running my own business but with the back-up of a national organisation that will help to ensure we can deliver on our promises.”

Those promises include a full 24 hour per day seven day per week service with no call out charges and fixed-price, no obligation quotes with a full guarantee on all work.

Drain Doctor technicians are trained not just with technical skills – including the latest techniques such as closed circuit camera drain surveys and no-dig drain repairs – but in best practice in customer care that is reflected in such things as wearing overshoes while in customers’ homes and clearing up carefully after every job.

Peter will be starting his business in Watford with one van but plans to have another van and an additional experienced technician on the road within two months. He will be covering an area north of the M25 that includes St Albans, Hatfield, Waltham Abbey and Tring.

“I am looking forward to developing my own business in a service-based industry which is relatively recession proof,” he said. “Even in a recession, people with a plumbing emergency still need to call a plumber.

Sarah said: “I’ve just collected my third and final T-shirt, which will take me up to my 40th and final endeavour in December this year, a fundraising calendar. The T-Shirts have helped me to raise money and are a really special keepsake to remind me of each and every event. He said: “Sarah is very driven and hugely enthusiastic and we’re very impressed that she has kept up the challenge. It was a pleasure to be able to help her in her efforts.’

Martin & Co Attending National Franchise Exhibition

Franchise News from whichfranchise.com

Martin & Co, the UK’s no1 letting agent and award winning franchise, are exhibiting at The National Franchise Exhibition at the NEC in Birmingham on the 2nd and 3rd of October. Martin & Co we recently recognised as the Franchisor of the Year (The Negotiator Awards 2008) as well as Best Large Lettings Chain (2009) and have also been nominated for Best Large Lettings Chain 2009 (The Negotiator).

Martin & Co are opening offices in record numbers, and their existing offices’ revenue is on target to have increased by 30% by the end of 2009. Whilst the sales market remains in the doldrums, the lettings market is buoyant. Our brand is also highly visible and we are continuing to invest, innovate and add value for franchise owners through new initiatives and services.

“Anyone looking to take control of their life and invest in their own future, should look for a business with a proven track record, a strong brand and exceptional training / support.” comments Mark Burdge, Martin & Co’s Sales and Marketing Director.

Burdge adds, “In difficult and unpredictable economic times, it is perhaps most important to look for an industry that has shown consistent growth and will provide an opportunity to build a secure future, irrespective of what happens in the wider economy.”

“The lettings industry has not only grown strongly over the last decade, but it is poised to continue growing steadily. As Richard Martin put it, “Owning a lettings business provides a safe, dependable and repeating income stream”.”

Martin & Co have grown rapidly by finding motivated franchise owners and providing them with exceptional training and support. With innovative marketing, national brand awareness and office numbers fast approaching 200, Martin & Co office have been able to position themselves as the ‘agent of choice’ for landlords.

2010 will be another record year for Martin & Co’s franchise owners. Anyone looking to build their own secure long term business, should come and talk to Martin & Co at the National Franchise Show at the NEC on 2nd or 3rd October 2009.

Driver Hire franchise reports business uplift

Franchise News from whichfranchise.com

The recruitment sector is one of the first to feel the cold draught of an economic downturn, it’s also one of the first in line to benefit from recovery. Transport and logistics recruiter Driver Hire has around 100 branches across the UK and is now reporting real signs of business growth in many areas of the UK. This echoes some of the optimistic comments that have recently been voiced in the media by economic pundits.

Says John Warren, Driver Hire’s Franchise Sales Director, “Several of our franchisees have enjoyed record trading weeks recently and within our network there is now a real feeling of confidence that we are emerging from the tough trading conditions of the last year or so. It’s good news for us and its also a great time to invest in a Driver Hire franchise.

People close to our business can see this and several Driver Hire franchises have recently been snapped up by people with “inside knowledge”, either as employees or through word-of mouth. For instance the Driver Hire office in Cardiff was acquired in May by Darran Perkins. Having worked in the business for two years Darran saw a superb opportunity for himself and hasn’t been slow to exploit it. He’s recently had a record week in Cardiff and we’re all really delighted for him. I have every confidence that he will go from strength to strength”

Driver Hire currently has a number of territories available across the UK, including new starts and re-sales.

*** Network growth provides confidence ***

Transport and logistics recruiter Driver Hire is now reporting real signs of business growth in many parts of its 100-strong UK branch network. This adds weight to some of the positive media statements about the economy that have recently been made by financial commentators.

Says John Warren, Driver Hire’s Franchise Sales Director, Several of our franchisees have enjoyed record trading weeks recently and within our network there is now a real feeling of confidence that we are emerging from the tough economic conditions of the last eighteen months or so. It’s good news for us and it’s also a great time to invest in a Driver Hire franchise.

One good example is the Driver Hire office in Cardiff which was acquired earlier this year by Darran Perkins. Having worked in the business for two years Darran saw a superb opportunity for himself and he has quickly exploited it. The Cardiff office has just had a record week in its history and we’re all really delighted for Darran. I have every confidence that this will be the springboard for even greater things in the future”

*** Five new franchisees join Driver Hire ***

The last few months have seen five new franchisees join the Driver Hire network, three of them being people with “inside knowledge” gained from previous employment within our business. Our offices in Dundee and Lancaster have both been sold as going concerns, the former a real top performer currently occupying third place in the Driver Hire sales league table. Offices in Wakefield, Sheffield and Lincoln are also now under new ownership.

The Sheffield franchise has been bought by Rob Leek and Ian Leadbeater, both of whom worked in Driver Hire’s Bradford office for several years before deciding the time was right to take the plunge themselves. Says Rob, “We believe that Sheffield has massive potential for Driver Hire and we are determined to make a success of it. We’ve seen how much money can be made in this business and we’ve decided we now want a share of it for ourselves”

*** Deferred payment scheme for new franchise purchase ***

Driver Hire has launched a scheme to help those buying new franchisees to finance their purchase. Providing a prospective franchisee can find a 30% deposit then Driver Hire will provide funding for the balance on commercial terms over a 2-year period. John Andrews, Driver Hire’s Finance Director, says “We don’t want good prospective franchisees to be deterred by the banks’ lending restrictions so we are prepared to help fund the purchase ourselves. In the long run it’s going to benefit both parties and we have already recruited two new franchisees on this basis.”

Spettro franchise launches its 30th territory

Franchise News from whichfranchise.com

Susan Massey has just launched Spettro (Bristol), Spettro’s 30th franchise territory to go live!

Susan is married and has two grown-up children who have now left home and so decided now was the time to start her own business. Susan explains how she decided on Spettro as her new business, “I have previously managed petrol stations and a catering business and have sales and marketing experience but was looking for a franchise that would give me the opportunity to acquire specialist knowledge within the property market.”

“After carefully researching what would appeal to me I looked further into companies that were in the building insurance repair specialist market. Then, after spending a lot of time talking to these companies, I decided it was Spettro that I wanted to meet.”

“I attended an interview meeting with the directors at Spettro in February and I left feeling that this was the company who could help and support me in a new career in a specialist market. Tony recommended that I chat to some of the other franchisees before I made up my mind. Since then I have been on the initial training course and I have just launched this September.”

Spettro helps home and business owner’s deal with property insurance claims and the repairs associated with flood, fire, storm, impact damage and burglaries. The business is regulated by the Financial Services Authority (FSA) which allows them to mediate with all the major insurance companies.

Local Auditel franchisee to help Thames Valley Chamber of Commerce members

Franchise News from whichfranchise.com

Thames Valley Chamber of Commerce has chosen local Auditel Consultant John Eustace, as their approved supplier of cost management services to their membership. John grew up in Tilehurst and went to school locally at Presentation College before graduating as a Mechanical Engineer. He worked at Mars Electronics on the Winnersh Triangle for 22 years ending up as Plant Manager, before becoming Head of Business Improvement with the Wolseley Group, whose HQ is at Theale.

John says: “As an active Chamber member, I am so pleased to be appointed as their cost management and utilities auditing provider. In addition to delivering high quality services to their membership, I will get the satisfaction of giving back something to the Chamber.”

Now in its 15th year, Auditel is the UK’s leading franchised cost and purchase management network. Their network of over 150 consultants, some of whom had faced redundancy, come from a variety of professional backgrounds. John Eustace joined Auditel last December. He said; “ I found the recruitment process to be very open and straightforward. The Affiliates in the network were honest and encouraging about the benefits and challenges of the business model. The training was very thorough and gave me the knowledge and confidence to drive my new business forward.”

Since joining Auditel, John has been working with clients in manufacturing, publishing, retail, and healthcare (a private hospital) and with solicitors. He says: “I have found savings in telecommunications, courier and delivery services, international mail, photocopier costs, and business consumables. The savings delivered are all in the range of 20%-50%.”

We are pleased to announce that David & Diane Leeder have taken over our Ipswich franchise from September 2nd 2009. David having worked hard for many years for the benefit of others, he decided that the time was now right to take charge of his own destiny and enjoy the benefits of his hard work for himself and his family.

David previously worked for many years as a Purchasing Manager and latterly as a General Manager within the engineering and allied trades. His vast experience gained here will no doubt give him the right credentials to take on the responsibility of running his own business. Diane’s career has been within the secretarial and administration sector, so no doubt they will both be highly organised.

Being their own boss gives them the opportunity of not only the rewards, but the flexibility in their work/life balance that is not always available when working for a company. David and Diane chose the franchising route as they believed that having the back up of an already well established and proven company such as The Original Poster Company, would give them the business model, opportunity and the professional support required to achieve their goals.

We welcome them to the company and believe that they will be able to improve on what is an already successful franchise territory.

FASTSIGNS franchise Milton Keynes finds a new goal

Franchise News from whichfranchise.com

THE new football season for the MK Dons is already a winning one for FASTSIGNS® Milton Keynes.

The sign and graphics centre, based on the Denbigh West Industrial Estate in Bletchley, has spent the summer producing giant posters for the stadium’s advertising hoardings for the first time.

Some were as long as 12 metres. And they nearly always had to be produced in a hurry.

Said FASTSIGNS® owner Alan Grimes: “The MK Dons wanted advertising hoardings up before the new season. The smallest poster is 3.5 metres long. The largest come in three pieces. We design the artwork, print it, and get the posters over to the stadium in double quick time. Now the season’s begun, we sometimes only get a day to put a job together before the next match.

“This is one of the biggest jobs we have done but it demonstrates our capabilities to take on projects of all sizes and deliver on time.”

Alan and his three members of staff like the challenge. “We were doing some work for the MK Dons last year and they’ve gradually used us a lot more. It’s great news for us because it raises our own profile at the stadium,” he said.

FASTSIGNS® sign and graphics centres offer custom signs and graphic products to businesses, including banners, window and vehicle graphics, signage, and exhibition graphics.

Drain Doctor sees franchisee sales rise

Franchise News from whichfranchise.com

Drain Doctor Plumbing – the UK’s largest emergency plumbing and drain repair business – has just completed its largest new franchisee training school since well before the start of the recession.

Drain Doctor director Jan Mitman said: “The recession may (or may not) be coming to an end – but the economic experiences of the past year or so have made increasing numbers of people seek a recession-proof business opportunity.”

Five new franchisees, taking on territories from Scotland to the South of England, have just completed their training in the systems and philosophies that have enabled Drain Doctor to maintain a 15-year record of unbroken growth.

The central principle is to deliver dazzling levels of service in a market plagued by cowboy operators who are overcharging customers for shoddy workmanship.

The Drain Doctor system is delivering solid financial results for franchisees because, even in a recession, people with a plumbing emergency still need to call a plumber. Because of Drain Doctor’s reputation and levels of service, the plumber they call is increasingly likely to be the local Drain Doctor franchisee.

Jan Mitman said: “Starting your own business as a franchisee, rather than totally on your own, provides a considerable level of support and assistance if you choose the right franchise.

“Buying into a Drain Doctor franchise, which offers a largely recession-proof business, provides further reassurance that if you are prepared to put in the work you can expect to gain real rewards.”

Drain Doctor franchisees offer a full 24 hour per day seven day per week service with no call out charges and they give fixed-price, no obligation quotes with a full guarantee on all their work.

Drain Doctor technicians are trained not just with technical skills – including the latest techniques such as closed circuit camera drain surveys and no-dig drain repairs – but in customer care that is reflected in such things as wearing overshoes while in customers’ homes and clearing up carefully after every job.

Delivering the goods with Riverford franchise

Franchise News from whichfranchise.com

Jon Ripley was Riverford’s first franchisee. This year, he celebrates his 10th anniversary of delivering award-winning fresh organic produce.

In 1999, a chance meeting triggered a successful distribution business that continues to grow today despite the economic gloom. Jon Ripley was working as head chef at a conference centre in South Devon when he met Guy Watson, founder of the now multi award-winning Riverford Organic Vegetables. Guy had been growing organic vegetables on his family’s farm and delivering them to local families, but was looking for licensed distributors in other areas to make his produce more widely available.

Jon and his wife Vicky liked the idea of setting up their own business, and Jon’s passion for cooking with fresh organic vegetables drove him to become Riverford’s first franchisee. Together, Jon and Vicky started their own business, delivering organic vegetables to 68 homes in Exeter and East Devon. Ten years on and the couple now deliver to 1,000 customers each week.

“We’re proud that many of our original customers are still on board,” says John. “In fact, our oldest customer is 96! As business took off Vicky and I employed two drivers to help us deliver to our growing customer base. Riverford listens to its customers and over time the product range has expanded, so as well as fruit and veg, you can get organic meat, milk, eggs, wine, chocolate and lots more delivered, which helps customers save time and cut down on shopping trips. I believe that we offer a genuinely useful, good value service.”

Riverford Organic is a full member of the British Franchise Association and the Soil Association. It has five regional farms around the country and over 100 franchisees, growing and delivering to 45,000 customers each week. Riverford has won many national awards, including Best Organic Retailer 2009, Best Ethical Business 2009 and the National Example of Excellence 2009.

“We need franchisees to help us provide a personal, local service for our customers,” explains Jack Slatter, Managing Director. “Jon and Vicky’s story shows that taking on a Riverford franchise can be an opportunity for long-term success. Riverford is the largest organic fruit and vegetable home delivery business in the country because we have stuck to our original principles of local growing and distribution. We can only continue to do that by recruiting the right franchisees to look after their own customers in their own local area.”

Local Signage and Graphics Company FASTSIGNS® which is based just down the road from Jessica’s home in Woodseats has a special way to show their appreciation.
A cashless future for franchisees - RBS Worldpay

A cashless future for franchisees - RBS Worldpay

Franchise News from whichfranchise.com

Matt Rowsell, Head of Business Development at RBS WorldPay

The debate about whether the UK will become a cashless society continues, but whilst we are not yet paying for goods and services with a blink of the eye or microchip implants, payment technology innovation looks set to continue, driven by consumer demand.

Yet despite consumer research revealing a preference for cards over cash, taking card payments is seen as complicated and expensive. Many franchisees are not aware that a small change to payment technology could have a beneficial impact on their bottom line – as well as to their customer service offering. As RBS WorldPay research recently found, most businesses that made recent improvements to their payment systems reported a signficant profit increase. So the argument for reviewing how you accept payments is a truly compelling one in the current climate.

And the good news is that whether you operate on or offline, are a small or larger franchised business or transact small or large ticket goods, there is a card payment solution for every type of franchisee.

Cost-savings

Let us first consider the overheads that can be cut by accepting card payments. These include high insurance premiums, often levied if you store cash on the property overnight. A third of franchisees work alone and are unable to bank cash regularly so this can become an unavoidable situation. By simply reducing the amount of cash that passes through tills, and is stored on premises, insurance premiums can be reduced.

Dependency on cash also creates increased exposure to fraudsters attempting to use fake notes – many of whom, sadly, target smaller businesses. Insider theft from employees is another unfortunate aspect of business life but reducing the quantity of cash being handled can also reduce these opportunities.

Taking card payments can help overcome some of these concerns. The quantity of cash on the premises is reduced, reconciliations are easier and the payments are protected.

Business boosting

Card usage has also been seen to increase average ticket sales, and consumers are now spending more on cards than ever before. In recent years, £354 billion was spent on cards annually, with expenditure on cards growing at around 13% per annum according to APACS statistics. RBS WorldPay research indicates that consumers prefer using cards, with four in ten (42%) saying their lives would be much easier if they could pay for everything with cards rather than cash. Furthermore, research undertaken by Independent UK Credit Card Comparisons revealed that around a third of consumers carry only £10 or less on them in cash and nearly half of consumers only withdraw money from a cash point once a week or less.

And what about the franchisee that operates online? Our research also shows that security is of utmost importance to the consumer when making a payment online – 55% of people ranked it as the highest priority, ahead of speed or the ability to get a refund on a purchase. So, when moving online, make sure your payment systems are watertight.

For online sales, a bespoke solution created in partnership with a knowledgeable provider, who will guide you through the process and assess your business’ unique needs, is essential. It is critical that every single transaction has gone through a thorough checking system to confirm that the customer is bona fide. For example, RBS WorldPay’s Risk Guardian puts transactions through hundreds of checks taking less than three seconds - unnoticeable to the online customer but providing peace of mind to the franchisee. Details given are cross-checked against data from third party suppliers and our own group customer base, so any anomalies are highlighted immediately. This three-second check can make the difference between a secure business transaction and a security nightmare.

The future of payments?

So, if your customers are not using cash, what are they using? There’s no shortage of options, including the relatively new ‘contactless’ card option which allows them to ‘wave and pay’ or ‘tap and go’ for goods up to the value of £10. Developed for the convenience sector, these are ideal for low-ticket goods like fast food and beverages, and speed up queues as well as offering very competitive transaction fees. Higher average ticket prices are better suited to advanced solutions offering debit and credit card transactions using secure chip and PIN technology.

Even using a mobile phone as a payment device is likely to soon become commonplace. Customers are already comfortable browsing the internet or checking bank balances with their handset, so using adapted phones for payments seems a natural progression.

But are customers really that future gazing? Well, our recent research shows consumers are very forward-looking when it comes to payment methods - seven in ten expect to buy small value products with a handheld device within the next ten years and a third (29%) expect to soon pay for goods and services with automated face recognition.

Evidence shows that offering card payments can increase the bottom line, improve customer service, enrich business intelligence and better suit customer preference. So offering card payment facilities is almost a no brainer. The only real challenge lies in finding the right solution for your business, but trusted and experienced payment providers will happily guide you through the plethora of products to identify the best solution for your franchised business.
