「英語を話せるポーランド人がアメリカに進出…それもポーランドを一歩も離れることなく。」

そんな記事が TechCrunch Europe に掲載された。

どうもポーランドは、IT 開発のアウトソーシング先として徐々に人気を博しているらしい。

アメリカの IT 企業のトップはニューヨークにいながら、ポーランドにいる開発者とメールや Skype を使ってやりとりをし、プロジェクトを進めている。

国境をまたがった協業のかたちはこれまでもいくらでもあったが、この記事で紹介されている企業では、ポーランド人は企業の一員として雇用されている。

さらに記事には、なぜポーランド人がアウトソーシング先として選ばれたのか、いくつかの魅力的な根拠が書かれている。

IT のアウトソーシング先としてよく使われるインドに比べて、最新知識を持った質の高いプログラマーを手頃なコストで確保しやすい。
（TV制作会社など）アメリカの文化に理解のあるプログラマーが必要。
ロシア、中国に続いて、世界のトップコーダーの上位 5 位内に入りながら、唯一ラテンアルファベットを使用する国。

この記事が掲載された翌日、昼休みに職場で読んでいたのだが、記事の内容以上に、読者からのコメントが面白くてついつい全部読んでしまった。

この記事が掲載されたのは日曜日。

皆、よほどこのネタがツボにはまったのか、続々とコメントが舞い込み、コメント欄だけで本文の 7、8 倍以上の長さになってしまった。

みんな、休みの日だというのに、パソコンに向かって延々と議論をふっかけている姿を想像するとおかしい。欧米のサイトでは、よく読者がコメントを書き込むけれども、ここまでふくれあがったコメント欄はなかなかお目にかかる機会がない。

コメントの内容は、記事の賛否両論に始まり、どこの国の開発者はいいか、文化的な差異の話、開発がストップした際のリスク管理、そして共産時代の歴史からポーランドの建国年まで、あちこちへ飛ぶ。

「自分の経験だと、北米、エストニア、オーストリアがいいアウトソーシング先だった」という投稿があるかと思うと、筆者に対して「なんでインドについて悪いことばかり書くんだ」という批判もあったり、なんともいえない過熱ぶり。

私の経験では、インドの業者とのやりとりはあまりスムーズではなかった。

ある日、私が依頼内容をメールで送ると、「8 月○日の終業時間までに完了します」という、自動返信メールのような機械的な返信がすぐに飛んできた。

ところがその後、待てど暮らせど、期日を過ぎても一向に連絡はない。
これは想定内のことだったし、そこまで重要度の高い件ではなかったので、しばらくそのままにしておいた。

さすがに週間ほどたったのでインドのチームに連絡すると、

「もう既に、先週の金曜日の○月○日にメールが送られているはずだ。もしないなら、メールの数が多すぎて、迷惑メールのフォルダに入っているんじゃないか」という返信が来て、送付したというメールまで添付してきた。

ところが、自分のメールボックスをどんなに探してもそんなメールは出てこない。

同僚が私のところに来て言うには、「私も、アメリカ本社の関係者の誰一人として、そんなメールは受け取っていない。どうもみんな最近、インドの業者にはいろいろと困っているみたい」と不服そうな愚痴を漏らす。

何しろ、持っている皿を割ったら、「皿の方が自分から割れていったんだ」と答える国である。こちらもそれなりな禅問答を予期して臨まなければならない相手だ。

話を記事に戻すと…、

全体のコメントを見てみると、おおよそ議論の中心は「文化的な違い」と「コミュニケーション」の二点に集約された。どんなに技術が発達し、伝達手段が多様化しても、人と人が理解しあい、共鳴すると気持ちよく仕事ができるものだ。

欧米の国々がインドや中国との間でしばしばトラブルに見舞われてしまうのも、それぞれの国の技術の高さだけでなく、文化的な違いがスムーズな意思疎通を阻害してしまった結果なように思われる。

まだ確率はしていないけれど、だからこそ、上手く行った時は面白い。

Is Poland Better than India or China?

English-speaking Polish advanced into the USA...without moving out of their country.

The article appeared in TechCrunch Europe.

It seems Poland is becoming another main outsourcee for IT development.

The manager of the US company in communicates with programmers in Poland by using email and Skype to discuss their project.

Cross-border collaboration is nothing new, but the company in the article hired programmers as their employee.

The article also put forward the advantages to work with Polish programmers.

A much better access to quality programmers fluent in modern frameworks and their competitive rates, comparable to what is offered by regular outsource companies in India.
(Especially western TV productions) a company really needs developers who understand the American culture.
The only country in top five that uses the Latin alphabet, is just behind Russia and China.

I read this article at lunchtime the day after being published, and couldn't help but read all interesting posts made by the readers.

Despite the article appeared on the Web on Sunday, many people were attracted and left a post after another with their deep interest. Eventually the page was filled with the long comments, nearly the septuple or octuple of the original article.

It was funny to imagine the readers spend whole Sunday to type endless comments and discuss such a topic. Readers often send their views or comments on articles in the USA and Europe. Though, we cannot see such a long list of comments so often.

It contained discussion both for and against, reader's experience (which country is the best to work with, etc.), cultural differences, risk management in the case of development disorder, history of the Communism era, foundation of Poland, and so on…

One says "In my experience, North America, Estonia and Austria were the best to work with", another guy said "Why this author put down India?" by objection..the fierce debate sparked on the Web.

In my personal experience, it was not a great deal to work with India.

One day, as soon as I sent a request by email to the vendor in India, they emailed me in really automatic style, "We will execute your request and get back to you by Friday xx August EOD (IST) ." It was just like an auto-message.

However…..since then I haven't heard anything at all.

As it was still within my expectations and I was not in hurry with it, I left it for another couple of weeks.

After long silence, I emailed again to India.

What they replied was "We had sent across OO last Friday, xx/xx itself. You might not have received it due to heavy email volume on your outlook..." and forwarded the email which they claimed. Though I checked my email box, I could never find the one.

My colleague said to me "None of the US office didn't receive their reply, me neither. Everyone has troubles with the vendor in India recently."

Well, when Indian breaks a dish, what they say is "The dish was broken by itself." We need to expect philosophical discussion when we have to do something with them.

Now back to the article…

After reading through all comments, there can see 2 main points, cultural differences and communications. Despite the evolution of the latest technology and the diversity of communication tools, we still need to understand each other more by communication. It makes everything work perfect and everyone happy.

The USA and European countries often get in trouble while collaborating with India or China (possibly other Asian countries, too). I assume it is caused more by cultural differences and miscommunication rather than by the quality of their skills and technology.

Though we still couldn't find the best practice, it spurs us to challenge new ways.

涙が出そうなほど刺激的。

ヨーロッパのダンスシーンと言えば、ベルギーのローザス、ドイツのフォーサイス、もう亡くなってしまったピナ・バウシュ、さらにフランスのモーリス・ベジャールなど、どちらかというと大陸側に主流があって、イギリスはいまいちだった。

それが近年、マシュー・ボーンや（かなりエンターテインメント性が高いが）、アクラム・カーン、ラッセル・マリファントといった新進振付家によって、イギリスにもコンテンポラリーダンスの新たな潮流が生まれてきた。

6 月末に初来日したホフェッシュ・シェクターは明らかに、それらとは異なるタイプの作品。

舞台は、一人の鎧を着た男が自死するシーンから始まる。

舞台奥には、2 層のプラットフォームが組まれている。
独裁者とも、あるいはロックミュージシャン、あるいは政治家とも見える人物が、その一番上の中央を陣取る。彼の眼下では、囚われた市井の人々が逃げ惑い、踊らされ、バレエダンスの美しい動きとは違った身体言語で激しい動きを繰り広げていく。高く組まれたプラットフォームが人物の力関係を明確に表していた。

耳をつんざくようなギターとドラムの音が観客の心理をさらに扇情する。ホールの入口に、通常の公演とは違って「心臓の弱い方、小さなお子様は…」と注意書きがあったのも理解できる。

時折、制御が効かなくなったかのように、身悶え、身震いし、胸を掻きむしりながら跳躍する姿は、体内の時限爆弾の爆発のショックを受けて、内から放たれる衝撃波を体の外へ放出しているかのようだ。

舞台上のダンサーにできることは、ただ踊り、駆けまわり、跳び、次々と訪れる予想外な人生の波乱の中で、ともかく何とかして生きようとする人の姿そのものだった。

これぞまさにフィジカルシアター！
フィジカルシアターで UK を代表すべきカンパニー、DV8 に引けを取らない、大胆で過激で新風を巻き起こす舞台だ。

その身体言語で語られるメタファーからはいろいろなものを連想できる。

肉体や精神に与えられた強い衝撃…閉鎖的な社会からの飛躍、
コントロールに耐えきれなくなった精神と身体の破壊、
テクノロジーと人間の間で膨らみすぎた矛盾…

そして、パフォーマンスの最後には、映画「ラブ・アクチュアリー」でも使われていた、ジョニ・ミッチェルの「ある愛の考察～青春の光と影」がしっとりとかかり、今まで目の前に観た光景がビデオの巻き戻しのように再現され、冒頭のシーンに戻っていくというニクい演出。

そう　私は人生を両側から見た
上からも下からも　そしてなぜかいまだに
心に浮かぶのは人生の幻
私は人生をまったく分かっていない

その美しい詞とメロディーと歌声がまじりあって、舞台をやさしく包み込む。それまでの荒々しい世界と不思議なまでに調和して、観終わった後に心に残るのは、ざらついたかすれや痛みではなく、夜の帳のようなやさしさ。

ちょうどマシュー・ボーンや英国ロイヤルバレエの来日公演と重なっていたり、日本での知名度も低かったことから、観客席の埋まり具合は正直淋しかった。
しかし、少なくとも会場に足を運んでいた観客全員の心は確実に捉えていたようだ。

同演目は、ちょうど先週の 14 日から 17 日にロンドンで上演された。
日本でもまたすぐにカンパニーの次の公演が観られることを期待！

This is tear-splashing dynamite!

Many remarkable choreographer, such as Rosas in Belgium, William Forsythe, Pina Bausch in Germany, Maurice Bejart in France and Switzerland…the last two have already passed away….can be found in Europe. It shows the Continent side has been the mainstream in European dance scene rather than British Islands.

Last 10 years, a new stream has made by budding choreographers, such as Matthew Borne, Akram Khan, Russell Maliphant.

The stage started with the scene of an armoured man killing himself.

There was a two-story platform on the rear stage.
A man stood on the top story and looked sometimes a dictator, a rock musician, or a politician. He commanded the dancers who represented the people on the street and were forced to run around and dance. Their movement was created by heady physical language which was totally different from the sophisticated one for classical ballet and modern dance. This towering platform was a metaphor expressing a hierarchy and the relationship between a top and bottom.

Earsplitting guitar and drum shook the bottom of audience's heart so lascivious. There was no wonder that we could find a note of caution saying "Attention, To audience who has heart trouble and all children..."

Sometimes, dancers nearly lost their control to be convulsed, shake themselves and jump with tearing at their heart. That looked as if their hidden power were released as a shock wave from the body by the timed explosion inside of them.

The dancers could just dance, run around and jump...as if we have to live somehow throughout unexpected destabilizing daily life.

This is exactly what physical theatre is!!
They compare favorably with DV8, one of the most leading and exciting physical theatre companies in the UK. They are so bold and radical that their performance brings new perspective to dance scene.

We can imagine so many things from the metaphor told by their physical language.

High impact to body and soul reflected...exodus from intolerant society, mentally and physically collapse due to excessive control, exploding contradiction caused between technology and human being....

Just before a curtain call, Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now" was played (it was also played in "Love Actually"). All scenes and movement were replayed like a super-fast rewind of video to Joni's heartwarming tune and finally ended with the first scene. They prepared such a pukka ending!!

I've looked at life from both sides now
From up and down and still somehow
It's life's illusion I recall
I really don't know life at all

Her beautiful lyrics, melody and voice were blended to surround the stage and audience like a warm hug. It amazingly merged into all harsh expression by dancers and left no dry tone or no pain, just peaceful moment in the predawn darkness.

It was a pity that all of seats were not occupied even at Saturday matinee, as other big-name companies like Matthew Borne's "Swan Lake"and the Royal Ballet were on at Tokyo during the same period and the company was still not known well in Japan.

However, I'm sure that the company grabbed the hearts of all audience in the theatre.

"Political Mother" was performed at the Sadler's Wells in London from 14 to 17 July last week. I'm looking forward to their next visit to Tokyo.

トム・ウージェック、13世紀のアストロラーベを紹介

前回のジェイミー・ヘイウッドに引き続き、TED での翻訳第 2 弾はトム・ウージェック。彼はデザインとテクノロジーによって最先端の分野を切り開いてきたパイオニア。

現在は米オートデスク社のフェローで、最近 iPad 版も話題になっている SketchBook Pro、映画やゲームなどの CG アニメーションになくてはならない Maya といった製品に携わってきた。

本当は彼のユニークな「マシュマロ・チャレンジ」の動画を翻訳したかったのだが、すでに他の人が担当してしまったため、別のスピーチを翻訳しようと選んだのがこれ。

彼はスピーチの中で、2 千年以上前に発明され、ヨーロッパやイスラム圏で利用されてきたアストロラーベを例を紹介した。アストロラーベは、現代の iPhone のように、最新のテクノロジーを搭載した道具だった。

彼はアストラーベと時刻の調べ方を例にとりながら、テクノロジーの進歩とその受容、影響について語った。

テクノロジーが向上し。
多くの人は進歩が、
我々をさらに知的で賢くさせて
世界へ結びつけていくと信じています。

…実情は必ずしもそうではなく、
進歩とは変化を意味することばでしかありません。

変化で新しいものを得ることができますが、
同時に何かを失うのです。

確かにテクノロジーは新しい体験を我々に与えて、わくわくさせてくれる。しかし、それと同時に必ず失うものがある。彼がまさにいわんとするところが、私にはとても理解できる。

かつて人類が活版印刷を発明し、これまでの知識を書物として保存することができるようになった時、それと引き換えに、今まで口承で伝えられてきた多くの知識が絶えてしまったと言われている。

テクノロジーが人間の頭脳の代わりを務め、人間の記憶や知識までも代わりに蓄積するようになり、我々は何をなくしていっているだろう？

これまでになかった作業も増えたけど、面倒臭がりであったり、さらなる効率化を求めるために、手足だけでなく、頭脳まで使う領域が段々と減ってきているように感じる今日この頃。そのうち生身の自分を司ることさえ危うくなるのではないかと怖くもなる。

アストロラーベは、テクノロジーと人間が共存し、テクノロジーを用いることで、人間の知がさらに増すという良い相乗効果をあらわした例である。

Tom Wujec demos the 13th-century astrolabe

Following my first translation of Jamie Heywood, I worked on Tom Wujec as my second TED work. He is a remarkable pioneer in the fusion of design and technology.

He is currently a fellow at Autodesk, American software company. He has worked on some innovative software, such as SketchBook Pro (its iPad-version is drawing huge attention recently) and Maya (must-software for all CG animators).

At first, I spotted his stimulating presentation about "marshmallow problem" on the TED's Web site. However its translation was already in progress. Then I chose this speech.

He showed an astrolabe which was invented more than 2,000 years ago and has been used in Europe and the Islamic world. It has been a top gadget of the time featuring the latest technology like iPhone.

He used a simple example... how to tell the time by a tool and explained how we have embraced technology and how it has effected a change in our lives.

As technology progresses,
and as it advances,
many of us assume that these advances
make us more intelligent,
make us smarter and more connected to the world.

And what I'd like to argue
is that that's not necessarily the case,
as progress is simply a word for change,
and with change you gain something,
but you also lose something.

There is no doubt that technology brings us a new experience and makes us excited. However we always lose something instead of it. I can really get his point.

Once we invented typography, it allowed us to save existing knowledge as books. But it was not only that. Rich oral culture has died which was passed down by word of our ancestors' mouth.

Now technology is taking the role of our brain to save our memory and knowledge. What are we losing?

As new technology is introduced in the world, we need to do something new which was not required before. As we become lazier and expect efficiency in daily life, I feel like we have less chance to use body but and brain, too. I am downright scared that someday we may not be able to control ourselves.

Astrolabe is a good example of synergetic effect between technology and people. By using the tool of technology, it made us more intelligent and connected us to many aspects in the world.

レゴで再現 2010 年ワールドカップイングランド戦

日曜日のドイツ戦での屈辱的な敗北が生々しいイングランド。

そんなイギリスで、前回の総選挙の時と同様に、2010 年のワールドカップをレゴで再現した、その名も「Brick-by-brick fussball」を公開中。

今回のワールドカップのアメリカ戦、アルジェリア戦、スロベニア戦の名場面が見事に、いやかわいらしく再現されている。

今日はついに因縁の対決だったドイツ戦の模様も掲載。あの疑惑のゴールシュートのシーンも再現。

観客席を埋め尽くすサポーターや、頭の上にヘアキャップがない背番号 10 番はルーニー…というこだわりよう。

ボーナス版として、1966 年大会優勝時の動画もある。ちょっと色味が暗すぎるけど、いまだにイングランド人が語り継ぐ名試合を白黒画面で再現。

もっと見たい人は Lego Fussball のサイトに行くと過去のヨーロッパチームのゲームも見ることができる（ドイツ語）。先々週の日本 vs オランダ戦の再現動画も。

子どもの頃に遊んだり、大学のゼミで「レゴとダイヤブロックの違いに見る文化論」を発表した私にとって、やはりレゴは思い入れがある。

優勝リーグからは離脱してしまったけど、この Lego Fussball で気持ちを励まそう。

England's grief is still raw after their team suffered the humiliating defeat last Sunday.

Once I wrote about the Lego figures of the UK General Election. There are also the movies in which Lego figures reproduce the matches in the World Cup 2010, so-called "Brick-by-brick fussball."

The movies show the best scenes in England's games against USA, Algeria and Slovenia. It's so fabulous and pretty!!

Today the site uploaded the last face-off between England and Germany billed as a clash of fate. It caputures the moment of the controversial goal kick by England.

The stands are filled with colourful supporters and a figure without a hair cap has the number 10 on his back...it's Wayne Mark Rooney!

There is a bonus movie of the England's victory in the World Cup 1966. Though the movie uses a bit too dark contrast in black and white, it's the best reproduction of the legendary game for England.

You can find more matches by European team at Lego Fussball (in Germany). Here is the reproduction of Japan vs Netherland game the week before.

Personally...I have a special feeling with Lego, since I played with it in my childhood and made a presentation on the comparative culture of Lego and Diablock (Japanese block toy) at university.

Even after England has already left the field, Lego Fossball still gives me a fun.

Twitter で進めるロンドン流 World Cup ブランディング

昨日のアルジェリア戦でやっとワールドカップ初勝利をあげたイングランドは、開会時に比べれば、大分気勢をあげている。

それでもロンドンのメディア会社の取り組みは、イングランドチームやファンの士気を上げるのに十分役立つだろう。

ブランドエージェンシーの The Brand Union が考案したのは、その名も「Footwall」。キャンペーン用の Twitter（@thefootwall）を設け、そのタイムラインをロンドンのファリントンにある会社の建物に映し出しているのだ。

イングランドチームの応援を兼ねて、自社のブランディングまでしてしまった例。また、The Brand Union は 2018 年ワールドカップのロンドン開催をサポートしているので、この取り組みはそのプロモーションにもなる。

この会社のあるファリントンといえば、ロンドンでもメディアやクリエイティブ業界の企業が多い地域。11-33 St John Street と言えば、私が通っていた大学の目と鼻の先！

The Brand Union の企業サイトでは、建物の様子をライブ中継している。

とはいえ、この Footwall、問題は夜にならないと建物に投射できないこと。イギリス時間ではほとんどの試合がお昼休みの時間帯に当たるので、一番盛り上がる試合時間には活用できないのが残念。

イギリスでは昼休みに職場のインターネットで観戦をする人が多く、その時間帯に急激にネットのアクセスが集中しているという統計も出され、社内 IT 担当者を冷や冷やさせている。

London’s World Cup Branding By Twitter

Finally England started holding a morale-boosting rally following the first win in the game against Algeria of the 2010 FIFA World Cup yesterday.

A campaign by a London's media company will encourage England team and supporters for the next game.

The Brand Union, a brand agency, launched the campaign called "Footwall." They created a Twitter account (@thefootwall) and has projected messages in its timeline on their building at Farringdon, central London.

While cheering up England team, they improved their self-branding, too. They have also improved their reputation. The Brand Union is also a partner in England’s bid to stage the 2018 World Cup, so it’s a fitting campaign.

The area around Farringdon is a famous place where many media and creative agencies are competing. 11-33 St John Street is just around the corner of my old university!!

The front of the building is broadcast live on their Web site.

One of the problems is...due to the nature of using a projector, the wall is only available after night fall. It is not available while games are taking place from lunchtime onwards in most cases. It's a bit of a shame.

So many office workers watch streamed games at lunchtime by using office's Internet. A research shows that It can easily end up to make networks down and give a headache to enterprise IT managers.

南アのワールドカップ効果、英国ではブブゼラ（vuvuzela）が大人気

今回の南アフリカのワールドカップで印象的なのは、観客席から鳴り響いてくるブブゼラ（bubuzela）の音。

左のビデオでは正しいブブゼラの吹き方をレクチャーしている。

ワールドカップの影響を受けて、ヨーロッパでは昨秋あたりからブブゼラが大人気。イギリスでも、Amazon やスーパーマーケットなどで毎日飛ぶように売れている。

しかしこのブブゼラ、方々で物議を醸している。
あまりにも音が大きいために、選手・審判・観客など各方面から苦情があがっているのだ。

数値で表してみると、ブブゼラの音は 127 デシベル。
これが競技場内では 144 デシベルにもなり、太鼓の 122 デシベル、審判の笛の 121.8 よりもずっと大きく、なんと花火や飛行機の離陸音、ロックコンサートの音量より大きいことを示している。

イギリスの国営放送 BBC には、6 月 10 日の開会以来、ブブゼラの音についての苦情が 220 件も寄せられた（6 月 14 日時点）。イングランドでは、自宅のテレビで試合観戦している人の 10 人に 6 人が音声のボリュームを下げているのだそうだ。BBC は急遽ブブゼラの音が入らないようにした中継方法も検討中。

南アフリカの競技場の外では、ブブゼラの音が聞こえない耳栓を売り出したり、イギリスでは、テレビでの観戦時に背景にかけるとブブゼラの音を消す効果のある MP3 ファイルをネット上で販売したりと、付随ビジネスも現れている。

南アフリカでは、熱狂的なサポーターたちがゲーム中だけでなく、空港到着時から街中、朝から夜中までずっとブブゼラを吹いているらしく、これではさすがにげんなり。

郷に入っては郷に従えという考えも多いものの、全世界的に苦情は少なくない。ブブゼラはワールドカップ後も世界に広がるのだろうか？　

きっと自分が応援しているチームが優勢に立っている時には、ブブゼラの音も気にならないのだろう。あなたはブブゼラに賛成？　反対？

World Cup in South Africa: UK’s Vuvuzela Feaver

The stadiums are filled with drone of vuvuzela at the World Cup 2010.

The video above shows how to play a vuvuzela like a professional player.

Millions of Vuvuzelas have been sold in Europe from last autumn due to The World Cup effect. Since Vuvuzela feaver arrived in the UK, vuvuzelas have flown off the racks of Amazon and sumermarkets.

However, vuvuzela has sparked global debate over loud drone due. Many football players, referees, and supporters have complained about it.

According to the survey, the sound emitted by a vuvuzelas was the equivalent to 127 decibels. It can generate a drone of up to 144 decibels inside stadiums, which is lauder than a drum's 122 decibels, or a referee's whistle...even fireworks, a plane taking off or a rock concert.

The BBC has received 220 complaints (as of June 14) after the kick-off on June 10.

In England, six out of ten fans who watch games at home are now turning down to cut out the horn-blowing. The BBC investigates the possibility of transmitting an alternative "vuvuzela free" version of its World Cup coverage.

Another pensioner called pest control in over the weekend amid fears her house was being attacked by a swarm of bees.

Some people found out a business chance from the complaints.

Some started selling vuvuzela ear plugs outside a stadium, and the other £2.45 MP3 file of active noise cancellation to eliminate the horns from broadcasts.

In South Africa, lunatic supporters keep blowing the horns not only during the games, but from the arrival at the airport to walking down the street 24-hour a day. It sounds bored to death.

Though we said "When in Rome, do as the Romans do", the fierce debate over vuvuzela has spread all over the world. Will it spread out to the end of the world after the World Cup?

ついに登場、2012 年 London オリンピックのマスコット

ついに発表された、2012 年ロンドンオリンピック、パラリンピックのキャラクター。

一目見て、あまりにも衝撃的…。

すでに公式サイトでは、二人（？）の誕生エピソードがアニメーションで紹介されている。

それによると、オリンピックスタジアムのための資材を造る工場を退職するおじいさんが、家に持ち帰った鉄鋼の液滴から作り出したのがこのキャラクター。

デジタル時代を意識したメタリックなデザインのキャラクターの頭にはロンドンのタクシーのランプをつけ、カメラのレンズを彷彿させる目玉が 1 つ、オリンピックのシンボルとなっている 5 色の輪をブレスレットとしてつけている。

それぞれの名前はイギリスの地名が由来となっていて、頭のランプの中にあるイニシャルで区別ができる。左側の Wenlockは、近代オリンピックの創始者であるクーベルタンが訪れた Much Wenlock の地名に由来している。クーベルタンは、この地で観たスポーツ大会から着想を得て、現在のオリンピックを始めたのだそうだ。右側のMandevilleは、パラリンピック発祥の町 Stoke Mandeville から名付けられている。そうした歴史を絡める辺りはいかにもイギリス人好み。

キャラクターの初期のデザインでは、擬人化された鳩やティーポット、手足のついたビックベンまであったらしく、恐いもの見たさでそれはそれで見てみたい。

スポンサーから提供される放映権料と並び、オリンピックの重要な収入源となるのがキャラクターグッズ。今までと全く変わってしまった、グラフィティーっぽく、大胆なグラフィックデザインのロゴもすでに物議を醸し出しているロンドンオリンピック。このキャラクターの評判はどう出るか。

ロンドンオリンピックでキーワードとも言える「デジタル」の時代らしく、2 つのキャラクターには Facebook と Twitter まで設けられて人気を競っている（今のところ、Wenlock の方がフォロワーが多い）。

Unveiled Mascots for London Olympic

Finally, the next Olympic mascots were unveiled.
Wow...what can you say about this???

Now the official site shows the animation of their very fast story.
In the story, a old man retired from a big steel factory producing materials to build Olympic stadium. He brought droplets of steel to home and created these unique creatures.

With the digital age in mind, metallic-textured mascots have a London taxi light on their heads, a single large eye made out of a camera lens, and bracelets representing Olympic rings on their wrists.

Both names were named after the town in the UK and can be recognized by an initial in the head light. Wenlock (left) was named after Much Wenlock where Pierre de Coubertin, founder of the modern Olympics. He was inspired by a sports event there and launched the modern Olympic. Mandeville (right) was named after Stoke Mandeville, where the Paralympics were founded.

Among the designs at the early stage, there were anthropomorphic pigeons, an animated tea pot and a Big Ben with arms and legs. I'd like to see them purely out of curiosity. The British like to quote history like this.

In Olympic business, mascots is also a crucial income source following sponsorship revenues. London's olympic logo has already provoked public controversy as it is a bold and innovative graphic design which is totally different from the past ones. Can they become internationally...at least nationally popular mascots?

They were born in the digital age (this is a keyword of London Olympic) and have already started internet social media such as Facebook and Twitter to enjoy their competition on popularity (so far, Wenlock has more followers).

お気に入りの「Top Gear」を鑑賞しながら、イギリス総選挙の最後の 2 座席の行方を気にしていた先週末。前回は、ちょっとまじめにイギリスの総選挙について書いたけど、やはり私が好きなのは小ネタ。

総選挙をにらんで、今年初めからダイエットに挑んだゴードン・ブラウン。

1 日に3、4 個は必ず食べてしまう大のキットカット好きなブラウン。これも内助の功で知られる、妻サラの気遣いによるもの。キットカットの代わりに、1 日バナナを 9 本食べるというダイエット方法。

ハンサムでメディアを巧みに使った前任者のブレアに比べ、無骨で見栄えのしないブラウン。元労働党党首のニール・キノックからは、"Of course Gordon has got a radio face（ゴードンはラジオ向きな顔に決まってるさ）" と三党の TV 討論会の前日に言われてしまう始末。

様々なメディアがこのことについて記事を書いていて、BBC はバナナとキットカットの比較表を掲載。「倫理的な実践」という項目でフェアトレードについて触れているのがイギリスらしい。イギリスとアイルランドではキットカットはフェアトレード商品として認証を受けているものの、ネスレ社は少々物議を醸し出している様子。

世界のキットカットが紹介され、ドイツのヘーゼルナッツ味、日本のりんご味、カナダのバナナ味や、日本で入試シーズンに販売されていた「キット勝つ」にまで言及がされている。ちなみに日本のキットカットや「キット勝つ」については、こちらの記事でも取り上げられている。さすがイギリスの国民的チョコレートバー。

バナナにまつわるネタと言えば、The Sun や The Telegraph によると、2008 年政変時に TV の前でバナナをふりかざしたミルバントは、その後野望は果たせず。今回の選挙の結果といい、バナナは少々縁起が悪いよう。

キットカットに目がないゴードン・ブラウン。
首相在任中に、日本のキットカット珍味セットでも贈ったら、名誉議員にでもしてくれたかもしれない。

選挙では惨敗でも、せめてダイエットだけでも成功したのかな。

I was checking the last 2 seats in the UK election while watching my favorite "Top Gear" last week. My previous blog was written about the General Election seriously…I’m rather interested in silly stories.

For the Election, Gordon Brown started dieting last February to make his image better.

Mr.Brown was addicted to KitKat and had a three-or-four-KitKat-a-day habit. Sarah, who is known as a supportive wife was concerned his health and suggested him to eat 9 bananas a day for diet.

Compared to handsome and media-manipulating Tony Blair, Brown looks dull. Lord Neil Kinnock, ex-Labour's leader said "Of course Gordon has got a radio face" just the day before the first TV debate.

Media wrote various articles about this. BBC told the story with the chart comparing banana and KitKat. It mentions about fair trade in the item "Ethical Credentials". KitKat was certified as fair trade in the UK and Ireland in January 2010. However parent company Nestle still seems to stand in a controversial position.

The article introduced many kinds of flavors of KitKats, apple (Japan). hazelnut (Germany), banana (Canada). Even Japanese unique "Kit-Katsu ("you will win" in Japanese)" for an entrance exam. This article also wrote about it. The British no doubt love nationally well-liked chocolate bars.

There is another story about a banana. According to the Sun and the Telegraph, David Miliband tried to make a good impression with the photo holding a banana during the Labour conference in September 2008, but failed. Bananas seem not going well with politics, the article said.

Brown, chocolate addict, would love Japanese special KitKats. I might deserve a privileged bureaucrat or a member of the House of Lords.

He was defeated in the Election, could he at least succeed in losing weight?

レゴで表わす 2010 年 UK 総選挙

前回、イギリスの総選挙について概要を書いたけど、今回はそのミニネタ。

まだ総選挙の結果発表前に、ダウニング・ストリートの首相官邸から、デビット・キャメロンとニック・クレッグの二人が首相のゴードン・ブラウンを担ぎ出している…これはウインザーにあるレゴランドの中でのお話。

レゴランドは世界各国の風物詩をブロックで作成して展示しており、これもその展示作品の1つ。

競り合う3党首の妻…未来のファーストレディもレゴの人形で登場。政界のファッションリーダーになりつつあり、妊娠中のサマンサ・キャメロンは、党のカラーの青いマタニティドレスを着ている。

それにしても芸が細かい。レゴ好きな私としてはたまりません。

In my last article, I wrote a summary of UK General Election. I spotted another coverage.

David Cameron and Nick Clegg carried out Gordon Brown from Downing Street, the office of the UK Prime Minister before UK General Election (so-called "Brown's Removals")...it's not yet in the real life, but at Legoland Windsor.

Legoland exhibits the superb miniature collection of many world-famous monuments which are built by their colorful plastic blocks. This Election figures are one of them.

There are wives of the competing 3 party leaders...one of them will be the next first-lady. Pregnant Samantha Cameron, who is becoming a political fashion-leader, appears in blue maternity dress.

What a elaborate political artwork! I, LEGO-lover cannot miss this.

明日は、いよいよイギリス総選挙。
今年の総選挙は面白い。

長らく政権を握ってきた労働党は低空飛行を続けて、それに保守党が反撃に出たかと思いきや、昨年の不正経費疑惑で次々と国民の信頼を失って心もとない。2大政党がしどろもどろな間に、今度は今まで陽の目を見なかった自由民主党が浮上してきたのだ。

とはいえ、3 党のどれも圧倒的な人気をとるるわけでもなく、絶対多数政党がない議会（hung parliament）になる可能性も多い。そうした状況の選挙というのはともすれば面白みにかけるのだが、今回はちょっと違う。

初めて党首討論会を開催

意外だが、アメリカと違って、イギリスにはこれまで選挙前に党首討論会を開く風習はなかった。この動画は討論会の一部だが、各党首のアピール方法の違いを見ることができる。

労働党のゴードン・ブラウンは、直面する厳しい現実について触れることで聴衆の危機感を高め、そこに具体的な提案を差し出す。保守党のデービット・キャメロンは、ライバルの労働党を睨み、労働党批判に時間を割き、観衆の愛国心に訴えかける精神論的なスピーチ。自由民主党のニック・クレッグは、フレンドリーでオープンな雰囲気で、どこかオバマ米大統に似たスタイルのスピーチ。

ブラウン首相、「偏屈者」発言
現首相のゴードン・ブラウンが選挙活動の遊説中に、ギリアン・ダフィーという 65 歳の年金生活者と会話をすることがあった。彼女は移民や犯罪の問題について質問し、その場は難なく終わったが、彼はここで一世一代の過ちを犯すことにことになる。会話が終わり、車に戻った後も、シャツにピンでつけられたマイクはオフになっていないことに気づかず、「あれはひどかった…彼女はまったくの偏屈女だ」と言ってしまったのだ。

その発言が物議を醸し出し、TV でも延々とこの話題が放送された。ゴードン・ブラウンは BBC のラジオ2で謝罪し、個人的に会いに行って謝らなければならないという異例の事態。

その波はメディアにも押し寄せた。日本と違って、イギリスの新聞はそれぞれの支持政党を明言している。この暴言事件が起こってから、いくつかのメディアは支持政党を変更せざるをえなくなってしまったのだ。

例えば、フィナンシャルタイムズは保守党支持を明言している。他の新聞社、サン、ネーム・オブ・ザ・ワールド、ガーディアン、タイムズ、エコノミストは長らく労働党を支持してきたが、ここに来てそのスタンスを変更しなくてはならなくなったのだ。ほとんどは労働党から保守党支持に転換し、ガーディアンだけが自由民主党に転換した。

このように様々なエピソートを作ってきた今回の General Election も投票間近。
今日の時点の世論調査では保守党がリードしているが、どうなることか。

UK General Election on 6th May

Tomorrow is the general election in the UK.
This year is getting more exciting than previous one.

The Labour is now flying low after being in office for last 13 years. The Conservative was on the counterattack against it, however it really didn't work since they were blamed for notorious expenses claims. While two main parties are struggling, it gave a chance to come under the spotlight to the Liberal Democrats which has been far from the limelight.

So far, none of them seems strong enough to take power and it may result in hung parliament. The situation like this is rather boring for observers. But it's a bit different this time.

The First Election Debate

Unlike the US, party leaders didn't have a chance to debate in the public before in the UK. The video above shows how each leader is appealing.

Gordon Brown(Labour) sometimes frightened the audience by the talking about the reality and show his concrete suggestions. David Cameron(Tories) spend his time to criticize the Labour and appeal more to audience's patriotic spirit. Nick Clegg(Lib-Dems) spoke in more friendly and open style like Obama.

Actually, the poll after the debate showed the Liberal Democrats received the highest public support rate.

Brown's "Bigot" made newspapers turn back

During the election campaign, Gordon Brown, the prime minister had a conversation with Gillian Duffy, 65 year-old pensioner. She asked him a few questions about immigrant and crime. The conversation was OK...but he made a big mistake. After he got into his car, he said "That was a disaster...She's just a sort of bigoted woman" without realizing the microphone pinned to his shirt was still on.

So it came to one of the top issues which was broadcast every minute. Gordon Brown had to apologize on a BBC Radio 2 and travel to see her in person. She has supported the Labour all the time but now she stopped it.

It stirred a widespread controversy among media. Unlike Japanese media, British newspapers clearly announce a supporting political party. Some newspapers had to change their political allegiances after the Bigot incidence.

For example, Financial Times is backing for the Conservative. Other newspapers, the Sun, the News of the World, the Guardian, the Times, and the Economist have supported the Labour but had to change their allegiances. Most of them switched from the Labour to the Conservative, and only the Guardian from the Labour to the Liberal Democrats.

日頃の不勉強さを反省して、先月から 1 年ぶりに英語のコースを開始。

もちろん、私が選ぶのはイギリス英語なので、集まる人々もイギリス好きが多い。そんなクラスメートから、あの Top Gear の放送が 4 月から BS フジで始まった（金曜日 24:00〜25:00）と聞いて、浮き足立ってしまった。

Top Gear といえば、1977 年から続く、BBC が誇る車マニア向け番組。コテコテ英国人 3 人、ジェレミー、リチャード、ジェイムズが出演し、一時休止はあったものの、アメリカやカナダなど、英国外でも根強い人気を保つ。

この番組、ただの車情報番組ではない。
日本でロケされたシリーズでは、新幹線と日産 GT−R のどちらが目的地に早く到着するか競ったり、車の試乗コーナーでは、イギリスで観た回には装甲車が登場。辛辣なコメントが飛び交い、突拍子もない企画で出演者が重症を負ったり、亡くなったこともある過激なエンターテイメント番組。

先々週放送されたシリーズ 8 のエピソード 4（本国では 2006 年に放送）には、有名人のタイム比べでユアン・マクレガーが登場。容赦なく、彼がエンストするシーンも放送。

この回はメルセデスの S クラスをジェレミーが試乗し、最新機能を試す中、音声認識機能に「くだらないラジオ局」と言うと、BBC ラジオ 1 がかかってお喜び、といったシニカルな部分はさすがイギリス的ユーモア。

次のコーナーでは、キプロス島でポルシェのカイエンがロードレースコースを走るのに対抗し、イギリス軍兵が同距離の地上 4 km からパラシュートで降下してタイムを競った。このように競い方が半端でない。

この回で圧巻だったのは、冒頭の動画にあるメルセデス S クラスの大改造。メルセデスの皮のシートを酷評するジェレミーが、車内を自分の家のようにしてほしいと、インテリアデザインをフランス人のマリーの依頼する。

ところがマリーが考案したのはオシャレな車内ウォッカ・バーで、自分の目指すスタイルと全くかけ離れていると知ったジェレミーは「こんなの僕のツイードのジャケットには似合わない、どうしても袖付き椅子がほしいんだ〜」と可愛らしく駄々をこねる。

そこから始まるのが英仏戦争を呈したぶつかりあい。ジェレミーは、ヘンリー５世の率いるイングランド軍がフランス軍を破った「アジンコートの戦い」を引き合いに出すし、マリーは「フライドポテトにお酢をかけて食べるなんて、どうみたって変よ」と反撃。車番組を超えた応戦は、車マニアでない私でも楽しめる。

最終的に、ジェレミーは強引にセメントを投入し、木の床をひいて、念願の袖付き椅子を置き、暖炉や本棚まで設け、車内にはティーセットまである。しかもその車を試運転してしまうのだが、コンクリートの重さでスピードは出ないし、座席はツルツルに磨いた木の床の上を滑ってしまうし、走行中に暖炉の煙突は吹っ飛んでしまう。ブレーキランプが点灯しないことに気がつくけど、電気系統の配線は全てコンクリートの下で後の祭り…。

だけど頑にこの車を愛する、偏屈で熱狂的なジェレミーはイギリス人の共感をそそるのだろう。あまりにもイギリス人らしく、私はそんなところが好き。

私がイギリスにいた頃は日曜日の夕方に放送されていて、日曜日のサザエさんのように、観る度に週末が終わる哀愁を感じる番組だった。じつはあまり観たことがなくて、こんなに面白い番組だったとは…これも字幕があるからなんだけど。英語、がんばろう。

Now Top Gear Is On-air in Japan

I came back to English school last month as I was too lazy last year. I prefer to study British English, so many UK-manias turn up in a classroom. One of my classmates told me Top Gear started being broadcast on BS Fuji (Friday 24:00-25:00) and it made me so excited.

Top Gear is one of the best motor TV-shows in the UK which started in 1977. 3 real-British guys, Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May drive and challenge lunatic car races in every episode. Though the TV program was suspended once, now it got worldwide renown among car manias and has been broadcast in the US, Canada, and so on.

This program is not only a car show, rather huge entertainment with British sense of humor. When they did a shooting in Japan, Shinkansen(Japanese bullet train) raced with Nissan GT-R. Even an armored vehicle appeared in a episode which I've seen in the UK. It is sometimes extreme entertainment show in which caustic comments pop-up every minute and some cast suffered severe injury and other was dead from extremely adventurous challenge.

The week before, Ewen McGregor challenged celebrity time race in the episode 4 of series 8 was on-air (UK broadcast in 2006). Of course it showed he stalled without reservation.

In the episode, Jeremy drove Mercedes S class. He tried the latest equipment and shouted "the most lavish radio station"...then he got so satisfied as the car started playing BBC radio 1. You can see a piece of British sense of humor.

In the next corner, Porsche Cayenne run on the race course in Cyprus to race with a parachuter from the Royal army who dived from 4 km above ground level. It's such a crazy race!

The most tremendous story was the complete revamp of Mercedes S class (see the movie above). He complained about the leather seats and asked Marie, French interior designer to remodel the car like his home.

Contrary to his expectation, Marie designed a trendy vodka bar which was completely against his idea. He had tantrum against her and shouted "Tweed doesn't go with it, I want...I want wing-back chair!!"

The long-history fight recurred between the UK and France. Jeremy quoted the Battle of Agincourt (Henry V's England army defeated French in 1415). Then Marie insisted "Vinegar on chips are really revolting." These battles are fun enough for a no-car mania like me.

Finally, Jeremy brought a cement mixer. Cement went into the car instead of the floor stripped out and set wooden floor on it. His long cherished items were installed...wing-back chairs, fire stove, small bookshelf and even tea set. They tried the car which didn't run fast enough with heavy cement. The chairs slipped on the freshly-waxed floor, the chimney went off during the run, and brake lump didn't work....any way an electric wiring was under the cement. They had nothing to do with it.

But I can say, most of the British like bigot and enthusiastic guy like him. In a sense, he is a typical British. I like him, too.

The TV program was on-air around Sunday evening when I was in the UK. It evoked some sorrowful mood at the end of weekend, just like "Sazae-san." Actually I didn't watch the program often in the UK. Thanks to subtitles, I could enjoy many cranky words and blue jokes. I need to study English more...

TED（Technology Entertainment Design）のことを知ったのは、イギリスの TV シェフ、ジェイミー・オリバーの Twitter でのつぶやきからだった。以前、このブログでも彼の表彰スピーチを紹介した。

TED は、著名な方々の革新的なスピーチをインターネット上で惜しみなく、無料で紹介している。それはクリス・アンダーソンの話題の書、「フリー ~〈無料〉からお金を生みだす新戦略」でも紹介されている。

ネットで全世界に向けて配信する上で必要となってくるのが、動画につける翻訳。なんと TED の動画についた字幕は、全てボランティアの翻訳者・レビュアーによって作成されている。

今回志願して、初めて TED で翻訳をてがけたのが、ジェイミー・ヘイウッドのスピーチ。

じつは、ジェイミー・オリバーを選択しようとして、たまたまジェイミー・ヘイウッドを選んでしまい、担当することになったという偶然のめぐりあわせだった（不純な動機でごめんなさい、ヘイウッドさん）。

でも、この偶然が ALS（筋萎縮側索硬化症）という難病、それだけでなく、人が生きることの本質について、また人が生きていく上でどう社会と関わっているのか、テクノロジーはそのために何をすることができるのか、といったことについて考えるきっかけを与えてくれたのだ。

予備知識も何もなかったので、立岩真也「ALS 不動の身体と息する機械」など、限られた時間で関連情報を漁った。

ジェイミーは最新のテクノロジーで、ALS 患者であった弟の生そして死を無駄にしないために、病と闘う全ての人のために Web ツールを開発した。果敢な挑戦は Apple のタイムマシーンの技術まで巻き込んで、この辺りはさすが MIT 卒業生。

時として、人生は驚くほど残酷だけど、ジェイミーがスピーチの中で紹介している活動のように、厳しい現実から目をそらさず、優しいまなざしでできる限りのことをするという前向きさにはっとさせられた。

動画の翻訳は初めてで慣れないこともあったが、無事に翻訳は字幕として公開された。拙い翻訳のレビューをしてくれた Kaori さん、どうもありがとうございました！

Jamie Heywood: The big idea my brother inspired

I found TED (Technology Entertainment Design) by a tweet of Jamie Liver, English TV chef. I wrote about his winner's presentation in my previous post.

TED offers tremendous numbers of speeches by innovative people...scientists, artists, entrepreneurs, activists, and so on. Amazingly they provide all movies for free which is introduced in a simulating book, "Free: The Future of a Radical Price" by Chris Anderson.

Once they started delivering videos across the Internet, the translation for them has been needed for international audience. Believe or not, all translation and subtitles are made by volunteer translators and reviews all over the world.

This is my first challenge to join TED translation project. My first translation was the speech by Jamie Haywood.

To be honest, I selected Jamie "Heywood" when I was about to choose Jamie "Oliver." Then I was given an honorable chance to translate his presentation (sorry, Mr.Haywood...)

This coincidence brought me the chance to think about ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), intractable disease, then why we live, how we connect with people, and what technology could do for us.

As I started without any previous knowledge, I had to find related information (e.g. Books by Shinya Tachiiwa "ALS - immobile body and breathing machine") over a finite period of time.

Jamie utilized cutting-edge technologies to develop Web tool for all struggling patients and not left his brother's life and death in vain. His valiant challenge employed "time machine"... Apple's unique technology. I have no doubt that he is one of the brilliant and skilled MIT graduate.

Generally, life is so cruel. Jamie talked about his activity with strong motivation. I was deeply impressed that he accepted the hard facts of life, tried to do his best and always did not forget to give a benevolent gaze to patients.

It was also a new challenge for me to translate and caption a movie. Now I'm so glad that my translation was published as subtitles. Kaori-san, thank you for helping with my crude translation as a reviewer.

クリストとジャンヌ＝クロード展 @ 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT

会社を休んだ日、六本木の 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT で開催されていた「クリストとジャンヌ＝クロード展」に行ってきた。

クリストのことを初めて知ったのは、まだ冷戦中にベルリンのライヒスターク（国会議事堂）をすっぽりと布で覆った時のドキュメンタリー映画だった。

たまたまパリで出会った、同じ 1935 年 6 月 13 日生まれのクリストとジャンヌ＝クロード。そこから全ては動きだしたのだ。なんて素敵な偶然だろう。

美術館の展示物では、彼らの作品のごく一面しか観ることができない。なぜなら、おもな作品は、ベルリンの国会議事堂やパリのセーヌ川にかかる橋、マイアミの島の周囲をすっぽりと布で覆ったり、野原一面に傘を並べて立てたり、公共の場こそが彼らのおもな作品の展示場だからだ。

彼らの作品は、普段見慣れた建物や場所を風景を変貌することで、慣れ親しんだ風景に新しい視野を与える。

そして、ポンヌフもライヒスタークも、プロジェクト実現のためにクリストが描いたドローイングは全て彼の想像の世界。実現したプロジェクトの写真と見比べると、彼のドローイングが青写真となって、驚く程、精巧なまでに再現されている。

改めて今回の展覧会で彼らの足跡を見ると、1つのプロジェクトについて、長いと 20 年余りも準備期間がある。それでいて展示期間は数ヶ月以下。有期な存在であるはかなさがアートとして作品の美しさを際立ててよいらしい（同感）。

以前読んだポール・マッカートニーのインタビュー記事で、「料理は最大の現代アートだ。とてもきれいに盛りつけられた料理は、食べることで、破壊されてなくなってしまうんだから…」というようなことを話していたけれど、やはり終わりがあって、限られた期間にしか存在しないから表現される美しさがある。

今回の展覧会ではドキュメンタリー映像の上映もあり、私はパリのポンヌフ（パリでセーヌ川にかかる一番古い橋）に布をかける作業を追体験できた。ただ布をかけるだけではダメで、彼にとっては、布の一つ一つのヒダの作り方までこだわりをもつ。

そして実際に、布が作り出すドレープは恐ろしく、感動的なまでに美しい。

彼はすっかり現代アートの巨匠となったけど、いろいろな意味でまさに現代アートのパイオニア。そのプロジェクトの実現までにいろいろな人を巻き込み、説明し、説得し、コラボレーションする。そして出来上がった作品は、公共の場に忽然と現れ、人々の注目を集める。

素晴らしいのは、彼が作品の制作のためにあらゆる層に石を投げ、その作品が完成したことで、今までは全く縁のなかった人々のコミュニケーションが始まること。アーティストや作品に対する好意も批判も、ありとあらゆるものが湧き上がるのだ。

彼の作品のスケールはもちろん、そのヴィジョンの大きさに圧倒される。

普通のアート作品と違い、国や自治体や市民やいろいろな組織の了解を得ないと実現できないので、その交渉は想像を絶するまでに厳しい道のりだ。でも、クリストはそれさえ創作の過程として楽しんでしまうのだ。

昨年 11 月にジャンヌ＝クロードが亡くなって、長年の二人三脚はなくなってしまったけれども、彼女との約束を果たすべく、アラブ首長国連邦のマスタバ、アメリカのオーバー・ザ・リバーのプロジェクトを実現することをクリストは決意したらしい。その２つが作品として登場するのが楽しみだ。

彼のドローイングやドキュメンタリーを観ていたら、久々にベルリンやパリに行きたくなってしまった。

On the last day of March, I went to the exhibition "Christo and Jeanne-Claude LIFE=WORKS=PROJECT" at 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT in Roppongi.

The wrapping of the Reichstag in Berlin (the parliament building during the German Empire) became my first encounter with Christo's work. A documentary film showed how they created the magnificent art work during the Cold War.

Everything started when a Bulgarian boy and a French girl met in Paris in October 1958. It was Chriso and Jeanne-Claude, both of them were born on 13th June 1935. What a beautiful coincidence!!

We can see only one side of their works, as their main works are so huge such as the wrapping of the Reichstag, a bridge across the Seine,

the pink cloth covering Miami's Biscayne Bay, the numerous umbrellas in California and Japan, and so on. All public spaces are the stage for their exhibited.

They changed the familiar appearance of buildings and spaces so that it gives new perspectives to viewers.

Christ made many beautiful drawings of the Pont-Neuf bridge or the Reichstag to develop his idea and project. All images in his drawings are works of his imagination. Amazingly those blueprints look precisely the same with his real works in photos.

In the exhibition, there was a timeline showing duration of each project. Some projects needed more than 20 years for preparation while exhibiting for less than a couple of months. Every their art work has an end. Brevity makes them more artistic and aesthetic.

Once Paul McCartney said "cooking is the best form of modern art. Every dish will be eaten and destroyed as soon as it comes onto a table…" in an interview. All the time, something beautiful has a end and exist only for a limited period.

There are some films in the exhibition. I saw one of them which described how they developed and created the idea, plan and art work of the Pont-Neuf bridge. Christo was not satisfied to cover the bridge by large cloth. He has sharp aesthetic sense caring each drape to cover it.

The drapes of the wrapping cloth show ethereal beauty and cannot help making us vehemently moved.

They are known as great maestros as well as pioneers in modern art in every respect. They get in, explain, and collaborate with thousands of people through the project. Their works appear in a public space all of sudden, and catch everyone's attention.

What I love most is the process of their works. They throw a stone to all levels of people for their activities. By the end of completing the works, or even after that, people who never know each other are involved and they start communication. Some criticize the artists and works, the other have in favor. All sorts of things come out.

I was extremely impressed not only by the scale of works, but the broadness of visions.

Apart from other art works, they need permission from many authorities, country, local authorities, people and so on. They always had to have a long way to repeat communications for fruition. Surprisingly Christ enjoys it as a part of his art work.

Since Jeanne-Claude had passed away last November, Christo lost his best partner throughout his long career. He decided to carry on two on-going project even after her death to keep the promise with her. One is "Mustaba" in the U.A.E and "Over river project" in the US. I'm looking forward to see how his new works will surprise us.

All his drawings and documentaries nearly made me to fly to Berlin or Paris.

バービー人形、新しい職業は「コンピューターエンジニア」

先月から仕事や諸々立て込んでしまって、ブログのネタもたまったまま眠ったものがたくさんあります。これもその１つ。先月ニュースになっていた記事です。

写真を見ると、かなりコンピュータオタクと化した様相です。

バイナリーコードの入った T シャツは特注か、コンピュータ関連の展示会でしか入手できなさそう。最新機器で武装し、日々最新技術のアップデートに余念がなさそうな様子。

「○○のアドオンが出たんだけど、あれって××と連携していてとてもいいの」

「○×の新しいバージョンって、CPU が今の倍で、△○も搭載されてるのよ！」

朝会社に来ると、毎日こんな話題しか出ないんだろうな。あまり嬉しくないぞ。

そうした意味では、皮肉の利いた WIRED VISION の記事の内容が真実みがあって面白い。とくこの５番目にある、ウインドウズ向けバービーと mac 向けバービーを作り分けるというのは現実味があります。

それにしても、一体どれぐらい売れるんだろう。

現在、12.99 ドルで販売中なようです。

日本のバービーと言えば、リカちゃん人形。

小さい頃、ピアノの先生や保母さん、お嫁さんにも興味がなく、リカちゃんのお母さんの職業が「デザイナー」とどこかで見かけてから、「将来なりたいものは？」と訊かれたら「デザイナー」と答えることにした時期がありました。結局一度も尋ねられたことはありませんでしたが。

それにしても、リカちゃんの英語のスペルは "Licca" なんですね。

Barbie's New Career is Computer Engineer

Many things have rushed in me since last month (not only job), more drafts were left in my document folder. This article is one of them which I spotted last month.

You can see her in the picture a real computer geek.

How could she find the T shirt with binary code printing? It should be custom-made or found at a computer fare. She seems a high-tech lover to chase after latest gadgets and update the latest technology information.

"You know, new xx add-on is compatible with XXX and very cool."

”The latest version of XX's notebook doubled CPU and also implemented....!”

Every morning she cannot start without reporting her technology news. It makes me full enough.

I like this WIRED's article. Their fifth suggestion is to develop 2 different types of Barbies for Windows and mac.

Now the doll is sold for $12.99. How many dolls will be gone?

We also have Japanese version of Barbie, Licca-chan.

When I was a kid, I was not interested in a piano teacher, kindergartner nor bride (they were top 5 careers for Japanese girls around that time, not sure about current girl's dream...). I thought that I needed to prepare an answer to "what do you want to do when you grow up?" I found that Licca-chan's mum was a designer and decided to answer "designer" to such a question. But I was never asked the question.

Well, the spell of the doll is "Licca"....a bit strange.

極東の赤毛のアン in Japan

その日、私はたまたまコーヒーショップの喫煙コーナーに座っていた。

私の正面にある壁際の席には、まだ 20 代前半だろうか、ほっそりした女性が一人で座っていた。彼女はタバコを指の間に挟みながら、もう一方の手には「アンの青春」を広げている。

タバコと「アンの青春」と、そして原作者のいたカナダから場所も時代も遠く離れた、2010 年の東京。そのアンバランスが何だか気になり、思わず目が行ってしまった。

はたして原作者の L・M・モンゴメリは、遠い極東の地でタバコをくゆわせながら自著を読むうら若い女性のことなど、執筆時に想像できただろうか。そうでなければ、どんな読者を想像したのだろう。あるいは小説を書いている最中に読者のことなど全く思い浮かべなかったのかもしれない。

いったい物書きは、どれだけ未来の読者のことを思い浮かべながらペンを動かしているのだろう。

Anne in The Far East

On the day, I was sitting in a smoking section of a coffee shop.

A willowy girl was sitting at the table by the wall just in front of me. She looked in her early 20s. She had a cigarett in her right hand and a paperback "Anne of Avonlea" in her left one.

Cigarette, "Anne of Avonlea", and Tokyo in 2010...I thought these things were totally far from the time or world of L.M.Montgomery. I could not help taking a look at her.

Could L.M.Montgomery, the authoer of the novel imagine a girl reading her novel with a cigarette in the Far East while writing her novel? Or whom did she imagine as a reader of her novels? Or she might never think about who would read her works.

I wonder whether writers care about their prospective readers.

BAFTA、キャリー・マリガンとコリン・ファースが受賞

2 月 21 日、イギリスのアカデミー賞にあたる、BAFTA（British Academy Of Film And Television Arts）の授賞式が開催されました。

主演女優賞を得たのは、「17 歳の肖像」で主演したキャリー・マリガン。かつてご紹介したニック・ホーンヴィが脚本を書いた作品です。

「プライドと偏見」にも出演していたとは、気が付きませんでした。四女のキティ役だったんですね。映像が本当に美しいこの作品、もう一度観たくなりました。

主演男優賞は、デザイナーのトム･フォードが監督した「ア・シングルマン」（日本では 10 月公開予定）のダンディなコリン・ファース。息の長い人気イギリス人俳優が、今回 BAFTA で初めて受賞とはちょっと驚きです。

二人とも、来週発表になるアカデミー賞にもノミネートされていて、結果が気になるところ。「17 歳の肖像」は作品賞でもノミネートされていて、4 月の日本での公開が今から楽しみです。

もう一つ話題になったことといえば、イラクにおける米軍の爆発物処理班を描いた「ハート・ロッカー」と、話題の 3D 映画「アバター」の一騎打ち。

ジェームズ・キャメロンの「アバター」が様々な部門にノミネートされるも、美術賞と特殊視覚効果賞といったあまり主要でない 2 部門の受賞にとどまったのに対し、キャスリン・ビグローの「ハート・ロッカー」は、作品賞・監督賞・脚本賞・撮影賞・編集賞・音響賞と主要 6 部門を堂々の受賞。どこかイギリスらしい

「ハート・ロッカー」のキャスリン・ビグローは、BAFTA で女性として初めて監督賞を受賞。彼女はジェームズ・キャメロンの前妻なんですね。観客席からキャメロンが彼女の女性に拍手を送る 1 コマも。

アカデミー賞の前哨戦とも言われる BAFTA。

映画の良さは賞の多さとは関係ありませんが、英国勢がどれだけアカデミー賞でも活躍するのか、今から楽しみです。

そして、映画とは別部門ですが、スーパーマリオなどのゲームクリエーターとして有名な、任天堂の宮本茂氏がフェローシップ賞を受賞。

ところで先週、仕事でプレスリリースの Web ページを作っていていたら、「〜が今年のアカデミー賞を受賞」という原稿がやってきました。「授賞式はまだ来週なのに、なぜもう受賞したことに？」と疑問に思っていたら、アカデミー賞の中には「ノミネート＝受賞」という部門があるのだと、この業界に詳しい同僚が教えてくれました。ちなみにそれは科学工学賞など。

アカデミー賞授賞式は 3 月 7 日（日本時間で翌 7 日）

BAFTA 2010, Carey Mulligan and Colin Firth Won The Prize

This year's BAFTA（British Academy Of Film And Television Arts）was held at the Royal Opera House on 22 February. BAFTA is equal to the Oscar.

Carey Mulligan won the best actress award for her performance in "An Education". The script of the film was written by Nick Hornby whose book I introduced before.

I didn't remember she was starring in "Pride & Prejudice" as Kitty, the fourth daughter. I want to watch the film with beautiful scenery again now.

The best actor award went to dandy Colin Firth for "A Single Man" (on screen this October in Japan) directed by a fashion designer, Tom Ford. I could not believe this was his first BAFTA during his long career in the industry.

Both of them are also nominated for the Oscar. I cannot wait a good news. "An Education" is on the list of the Academy nominees in the best film category. I really look forward the release of the film this April in Japan.

Another top feature was the battle between American films, "the Hurt Locker" a drama about a US bomb disposal unit in Iraq, and "Avatar", the 3D fantasy which is a blockbuster film around the world.

While "Avatar" was nominated in many categories and could ultimately won only 2 minor awards (production design and special visual effects), "the Hurt Locker" won main 6 prizes, best film, best director, original screen play, cinematography, editing and sound. The British made their own selection.

Kathryn Bigelow, the director for "The Hurt Locker" becomes the first woman in BAFTA history to take the best director award. She is the former wife of James Cameron, who cheered her on from the audience.

BAFTA is said a prelude to the Academy Awards. We cannot judge a film only by prize, but it makes me more excited to see how the British can be successful at the Academy Awards this year.

Regarding another category, Shigeru Miyamoto, a game creator of Super Mario Brothers, received the Fellowship at this year's GAME British Academy Video Games Awards.

By the way, I had to create a Web page for a press release last week. The draft which I received said "xxxx is this year's winner at the Academy Award...". I wonder why they already knew the winner. My colleague who know the industry well, told me that in some categories nominees automatically turned into a winner. This is an example... scientific and engineering award.

The Academy Awards will be held on 7 March in the US.

18 回の流産を乗り越え、無事出産

イギリスで 18 回の流産を経験した末、無事に女児を出産したアンジー・ベイカーさんのことが話題に。週末、Yahoo ニュースでも取り上げられていたので、目にした方も多いことでしょう。

私の隣に座るゴシップ好きの同僚ともこのニュースが話題になり、まだ 33 歳で、13 年の間に 18 回も流産したという点で二人とも驚き。

主治医はベイカーさんの白血球に問題があり、不妊につながっていたと診断。「18 回も流産するより、宝くじに当たる方がはるかに簡単」ということばはちょっとショッキング。

まだ 100 年ぐらい前までは、出産時に女性が命を危うくすることが決して珍しくなかった時代。医学の発達した現代ですら、私の周りでは流産を経験している女性が少なくありません。

それでも、人間何でも忘れてしまうもので、2 回の流産の末に男の子を産んだ知人は、日常生活で家事と仕事のバランスを取るのが難しくなると、ついつい子どもにあたってしまうそうです。

彼女が少しストレスがたまっていそうに見える時、「流産しても、がんばって子どもを産んだよね。子どもって欲しくてもなかなか産めるものじゃないから、本当にラッキーだったよねえ」と私が話しかけると、彼女は魔法にかかったように幸せな顔を取り戻します。

私もこんなことを書きながら、いつか子どもを持ったら同じようなことばで諌められるんだろうか…。今から反省。

Angie Baker, 33 year-old from East Sussex, finally gave birth to a baby girl after 18th miscarriage. Many Japanese found this news as it was picked up on Yahoo news last weekend.

My gossip-lover colleague sitting next to me knew and talked about it with me. Both of us got so surprised that Mrs. Baker had 18 miscarriages at 33 for 13 years.

Her doctor found out that her white blood cells caused a problem with pregnancy. "Eighteen miscarriages is a huge number. You're more likely to win the lottery than have 18 miscarriages through bad luck."... his words sound so shocking.

Around 100 years ago, many women had to take a fatal risk when they delivered a baby. Even now, some of my friends had to experience a miscarriage despite of advance in modern medicine.

Well, we will easily forget all sorts of things, even the hardest part in your life. One of my friend finally got a baby boy after 2 miscarriages. Now she sometimes becomes hard on his little boy when she lacks a balance between her job and household responsibilities.

When she looks stressed out, I tell her "you could finally give birth to a baby boy despite of 2 miscarriages. It's amazing, you've done a great job. Not all women cannot have a baby, so you're such a lucky girl!" As soon as she is told like that, she looks enchanted and has a big smile on her face.

Though I am writing this, who knows what will happen to me? Somebody might tell me the same thing when I got a kid. It seems I've already needed moments of reflection.

先週から何かと話題になっている、アビイ・ロード・スタジオ売却問題。

ビートルズが数々の名アルバムを録音したことで知られ、音楽家の評判も高いこのスタジオ、先週までは EMI が売却をほぼ決定し、どこが買収先になるのかと話題になりましたが、昨日方向転換した模様。今は出資先との話し合いが進んでいるようです。

元ビートルズのメンバー、ポール・マッカートニーが存続のために音頭をとったり、 Cats などで有名な作曲家、アンドリュー・ロイド・ウェーバーがスタジオの買収に興味を示したり、ナショナル・トラストやイングリッシュ・ヘリテッジまで申し出て、状況は二転三転しているようです。

友達の家に行く途中に通ったアビイ・ロード。アビイ・ロードのそばに住んでいると言えば、格が上がるもの。スタジオの辺りは高級住宅地ですが、ちょっと北に行けば移民の多い雑然とした町並みだったり、ロンドンは街が複雑に入り組んでいます。

BBC のニュース動画にもたくさん出ていますが、相変わらずみんなここでお馴染みのポーズの撮影をするんですね。

ところで、埼玉にあるジョン・レノン・ミュージアムが今年の９月 30 日で閉館してしまうのが悔やまれます。

Help! Who Could Save Abbey Road Studio

Abbey Road Studio sell-off has become a top issue from last week.

It is well known as a historical music studio where the Beatles recorded many albums and many musicians have loved this top studio. EMI almost decided to sell the studios, media tried to find out who could be the new owner of it. But it seems EMI changed their mind. They started the talk with the third party which would invest in the revitalisation of the North London complex.

Ex-Beatle Sir Paul McCartney called for Abbey Road to be saved. Lord Lloyd-Webber, the musical composer, was also very interested in buying the studios. National Trust and English Heritage also showed their strong interest to buy the studios. The things are still going backward and forwards.

I always passed Abbey Road by bus on the way to my friend's house. If you can say "I'm living near from Abbey Road", your place sounds so high-status. There are nice old houses around the studio and one of the exclusive residential districts in London. Within a stone's cast of it, you can see a different echnic aspect of the area with many immigrants. London is a maze of town with so many different faces.

Even now, many tourists and Londoners visit here to take a photo imitating the famous record jacket. You can see it in the BBC's video.

By the way, it's such a pity that the John Lennon Museum in Saitama will close on 30 September. I must hurry!

イギリスで一番有名なグラフィティ・アーティストと言えば、やはり Banksy!

彼の作品集を見ると、ほんとイギリスらしいシニカルで、知的で、ポップな作風が何とも言えず、つい本屋の店先でページをめくりながらニヤニヤしてしまいます。

今回話題になっているのは、ロンドン南部、クロイドンの工事現場にあった壁に Banksy が描いたと言われている作品。

そもそも、落書きであるグラフィティ・アートには、他のアート作品と違って作者がはっきりしないものがほとんどですし、Banksy 自身が自分の素性を明かそうとしないことで有名で、今回の作品が本当に彼の作品か真偽のほどは謎のままです。

それでも、グラフィティ収集家の 2 人は、この作品を守るため開発会社に 30,000 ポンド（日本円で約 4,230,000 円）を支払い、9 日 9 晩かけて壁を掘り出した後、クレーンを使って 1 トンもするスチール製の額に収め、北イングランドのとある場所に搬送されるそうです。

この記事を読んだ当初は、不運を恐れずに作品を守ろうとする芸術愛好家 2 人の愛と情熱の物語、と思っていたのですが、彼らは後日この作品が 500,000 ポンド（約 70,000,000 円）で売れることを見込んで準備しているらしい。百年の恋も一気に覚めるような気持ち…。

ウォーター・ルーの元 Eurostar 用に使われていたトンネルに描かれた Banksy の作品はその後どうなったかなあ。

Collectors Spend ￡30,000 Rescuing Banksy Mural

- But He Won't Confirm It's Real

Everyone will agree that Banksy is the most popular British graffiti artist.

His works are always cynical, witty, pop and filled with sense of British humour. I cannot stop giggling at a book shop while seeing his art books.

They found so-called Banksy's mural on a construction site in Croydon, South London.

Graffiti is normally very different from other art works and does not have a certificate. Moreover, as Banksy keeps his identity a close secret, the collectors will never know who drew the mural.

Anyway, 2 collectors paid ￡30,000 to the construction company. After digging it out of the ground for 9 days and 9 nights, the mural will be removed into a 1-tonne steel frame by using a crane. Finally it will be moved to a secret location in the North of England.

On my first reading, I thought it was the story of love and passion by 2 collectors who would not care any risks for their love of art. When I knew they were preparing to sell the mural for ￡500,000, my throb turned into disappointment suddenly.

I wonder whether one of Banksy's works is still existing in the tunnel for old Eurostar at Waterloo station.

Brit Awards 2010 の受賞結果は

2 月 16 日が授賞式だった Brit Award、今年は US の Lady Gaga の風変わりな衣装と彼女のインターナショナル 3 部門受賞が話題になったようです。

こちらはダイジェスト映像の 1 つ。

最近日本でも話題の Lady Gaga、私はどちらかと言うと Queen の Radio Ga Ga の方が思い浮かぶなあ、と思っていたら、どうも彼女の芸名はこの曲名に由来しているらしい。ちょうどファッションデザイナーのアレクサンダー・マックイーンが亡くなった直後で、彼女も演奏の冒頭でマックイーンへの追悼の言葉を述べました。

ユニクロ愛用家のラッパー、Dizzee Rascal はイギリス・ソロアーティスト部門を受賞。Rascal とイギリス・アルバム賞を受賞した Florence & The Machine の授賞式の共演が、授賞式から 5 時間とたたずに iTunes ストアで発売され、チャートの 1 位になったのは今時らしい話題です（イギリスの iTunes ストアでのみ有効なので、日本では購入できませんが）。

以前、私が投票した「過去 30 年間におけるイギリス最優秀アルバム」の部門は、オアシスの「(What's The Story) Morning Glory?」が受賞し、コールドプレイも Dido も漏れてしまって残念。そういえば、イギリス・グループ部門にノミネートされていた Doves が受賞されなかったのも残念。

今年の功労賞を受賞した Robbie Williams のメドレー演奏を観ていると、イギリスのラジオでもなじみのある曲の数々が含まれていて、世代を超えて時代を代表する歌手なんだとしみじみと実感しました。

そして「過去 30 年間における最優秀ヒット曲」の部門では、ビー・ジーズも、The Who も、カイリー・ミノーグも、なんとマイケル・ジャクソンも差し置いて、スパイス・ガールズの「Wannabe/Who Do You Think You Are」が名誉の栄冠を手にしたのです。なんともイギリスらしいというか…。

Winner For Brit Awards 2010

Brit Awards 2010 was held in London on 16 February. This year's big news was Lady Gaga's extraordinary costume and her hat trick.

These days, Lady Gaga is getting popular in Japan, too. I rather prefer Queen's "Radio Ga Ga" which is coincidentally the root of her name. The show was just after the death of Alexander McQueen. Lady Gaga started her performance with a tribute to this great fashion designer.

Uniqlo follower, Dizzee Rascal won "British Male Solo Artist." After Rascal and another winner Florence & The Machine (MasterCard British Album) performed together on the stage, it was distributed on iTunes Store within 5 hours after the show and became No.1 at the store. It was a kind of breakthrough topic for this year (the tune is available only in the UK, so we cannot buy it in Japan).

BRITs Album of 30 Years in which I voted went to Oasis' "(What's The Story) Morning Glory?" What a shame, it didn't go to Coldplay nor Dido. Oh, Doves also missed the title as British Group.

Robbie Williams won Outstanding Contribution Award. His medley included many iconic tunes played on the radio. I realized he is one of the most poplar artist for all ages in the UK.

The BRITs Hits 30 went to... not Bee Gees, The Who, Kylie Minogue, Michael Jackson... amazingly to Spice Girls' "Wannabe/Who Do You Think You Are." Well, that's in the UK.

ギエムとルグリ in ballet

昨年はシルヴィ・ギエムを観る機会が贅沢なほどたくさんありましたが、ボレロを踊ったベジャールの追悼公演からほぼ一年後、同じ会場で「マニュエル・ルグリの新しき世界」でギエムを観てきました（2 月 6 日、ゆうぽうと）。

ルグリの看板公演で、パリ・オペラ座のアニエス・ルテステュ、オレリー・デュポンやシュツットガルトバレエ団、アメリカン・バレエ・シアターのダンサーなど豪華な顔ぶれのガラ公演なのに、行く前から頭の中はギエム一色。

今回の注目の的と言えば、ルグリとギエムの 15 年ぶりの共演。踊られたのは、キリアンの「優しい嘘」とケネス・マクミランの「三人姉妹」の 2 演目でした。

■ 優しい嘘（振付：イリ・キリアン）

2007 年に、ニコラ・ル・リッシュと踊った時には、ル・リッシュに抱きかかえられ、その腕の上で体を丸く縮めるギエムの姿が、儚く危うい息吹をもつ胎児のように見え、不思議な安息の瞬間があった。

毎回、静謐なこの作品を観ていると、音楽がモンテベルディからグレゴリアン聖歌へと移り変わっていくうちに、ついつい観ている自分も無我の境地に陥ってしまうのが難点。瞑想している内にあっという間に小品が終わってしまう。。。

今回、ルグリと踊る様子は、ともかく二人共よく動くので、キリアンの世界の「静」以上に、冒頭から「動」のイメージが強い。そこまで身体を動かすかと、まず二人の驚愕的な身体性を再認識。双方が対等に動けるが故に、静かな空間を切り裂くような躍動感を相乗効果で醸し出す。

チェコ人キリアンの、フォーサイスとはまた異なる静謐で緻密な世界は、禅のような静寂な世界を思い起こさせる。ギエムとルグリのペアは、彼らだからなし得る熟練した形で、動と静の対比の中に巧みに無の境地を表現した。

■ 三人姉妹（振付：ケネス・マクミラン）

チェーホフの同名小説が元になっているこの作品では、田舎教師のクルイギンとの結婚に息が詰まる思いをしていた次女マーシャ（ギエム）は、ヴェルシーニン中佐（ルグリ）と恋に落ちる。今回の公演では、この中から最後の「別れ」のパ・ド・ドゥが踊られた。

この作品も、今までにギエムとニコラ・ル・リッシュのペアで何度か観たことがあるが、ギエムのベストパートナーは、クラシックバレエとしてあるべき形…男性が女性をひきたてるスタイルで相手をサポートし、お互いの苦悩と愛情のぶつかりを表現していた。

今回のルグリでは、あえて「女性をひきたてる」という趣向は薄まった感があった。ここでギエムとルグリという今世紀のスターダンサー二人が全く対等に渡り合って、互いの才能と個性を舞台上でぶつけあい、作品の芸術性を高めているかのようで新鮮だった。

ギエムの演じるマーシャについては、あえてここでは舞踏評論家アン・ヌージェントが言葉巧みに表現している文章を引用する。

「自分の境遇に課せられた社会的な制約のため、ヒロインたちは望みどおりの人生を選ぶことができない。ギエムはこれまでの解釈を踏襲せず、自分の言葉でそれぞれのキャラクターに迫っていった。彼女のマーシャとマルグリット*には現代的な感受性が仄見え、それは時折、危険な揺らぎとなって表面に現れる。」

「マーシャは、陸軍中佐ヴェルシーニンとの出会いに、束の間の幸福を見出す。ひょっとしたら自分のものになっていたかもしれない運命。だがマーシャの喜びは、悲しみに彩られている。おそらく決して手に入らないものに向かって、恍惚と身体を投げ出すギエムの動きに、観客はその悲哀を感じ取るだろう。」

*マルグリットはフレデリック・アシュトンの「マルグリットとアルマン」のヒロイン。これもロイヤル・バレエで、ギエムの十八番となった演目。

阻まれる愛、不可能な愛がテーマの演目。

互いに配偶者や子があり、貫くことのできない愛――ヌージェントの文章にもあるように、ギエムの一挙手一投足から、悲しみに裏付けされた愛がほとばしり、切ない気持ちをかきたてられる。

最近はめっきりコンテンポラリーしか踊らなくなってしまったギエムだが、パリ・オペラ座やロイヤル・オペラ時代とも異なった情感溢れる舞台を観ると、もっと古典も踊ってほしいと切に願ってしまう。今回の「三人姉妹」を観て、彼女のさらなる進化を感じさせられた。

他の芸術と違わず、バレエでも観客が好むのは喜劇より悲劇。演じる方とってはじつは喜劇の方が数倍も難しいのだけど、観客は自らの悲しみのカタルシスのために悲劇を好み、興行側もその時流に乗ることを忘れない。

観るのは悲劇でもいいけれど、

実人生ではやっぱり悲劇はイヤだなあ…。

Guillem and Regris in Ballet

I was so lucky last year that I could see Sylvie Guillem on the stage several times in Tokyo. It was just a year after I saw her Borelo in the memorial gala for Maurice Bejart at the same theatre, I could find her again at the same theatre in “New Universe of Manuel Legris” (2010/02/06 at Gotanda U-Port).

Manuel Legris was the hero of the night, other guest dancers included Agnès Letestu and Aurélie Dupont from the Opéra national de Paris, and more from Stuttgarter Ballett and American Ballet Theater. It was a luxurious gala, but I had already got so excited to think about Guillem’s performance. It was an unbelievable and comfortable moment.

The main feature of the gala was a collaboration between Guillem and Legris for the first time after their 15-years separation. They performed “Doux Mensonges” by Jiri Kylian and “Winter Dreams” by Kenneth MacMillan.

My first view of this work goes back to the performance by Guillem and Nicolas Le Riche. Guillem curled her legs in his arms and looked like a tiny baby with a fragile life.

Every time I see this piece of dance, the tranquil stillness invites me to spiritual state above my mind while music changing from Monteverdi　to Gregorian Chant. Medication takes me so far, I always miss what’s going on the stage.

The partnership between Guillem and Regris created so kinetic movement that dynamic aspect was emphasizd more than tranquility of Kylian’s　work. They stands out from any other dancers in dynamic and aesthetic movement. Both of them were free from any restrictions with a hardened body and an aesthetic sensibility. Their truly equal partnership generated a synergistic effect to create noble and beautiful impact to break the stillness.

The works by Jiri Kylian, Czech choreographer, have a different type of tranquility world from William Forthyse’s one, it’s rather a reminiscent of tranquility of Zen. Guillem and Regris successfully expressed spiritual state of nothingness by their unique and skilled way to contrast silence and dynamic.

This work is based on Chekhov's play "Three Sisters." Masha, the middle sister was feeling trapped in her marriage to Kulygin, the local school teacher. She fell in love with Lt. Colonel Vershinin. Guillem and Regis performed pas de deux "Farewell."

I’ve also seen Guillem and Nicolas Le Riche dance this several times. Le Riche supported and squired Guillem by following the ideal way of classical ballet. Their movement brought their love, passion and sadness directly to the audience. In the end, it turned into emotional conflict to be torn by their family, society, and fate.

In contrast, Regris didn’t really follow this classical approach. Two distinguished star-dancers in the century were truly equal again throughout the program. They danced with a strong partnership. The discord of their talent and personality made the artistic caliber of the work amazingly higher.

Regarding Masha performed by Guillem, I’d like to introduce the words by a dance reviewer, Ann Nugent.

"Their heroines are prevented from leading fulfilled lives because of social expectations attached to their situations. Guillem, far from suggesting that she is an inheritor of roles, approaches the different characters in her own idiom. Her Masha and Marguritte reveal glimpse of a modern sensibility, and from time to time they brush with danger."

"For Masha, the middle sister, who is trapped into a respectable but loveless marriage, there comes a brief period of happiness when she meets Lt Col. Vershinin. Masha's joy, as she catches sight of a destiny that could be hers is tinged with sadness. You can feel this in Guillem's ecstatic sweeps of movement she seems to reach for the unattainable."

*Marguerite is a heroine in "Marguerite and Armand" choreographed by Frederick Ashton. One of the Guillem's best performances at Royal Ballet.

Romance and love with obstacles and difficulties are the main theme of the work.

Both of Masha and Vershinin had a partner and child, and it was impossible for them to carry on loving each other. As Nugen wrote, Guillem’s all steps traced her love with sadness and made us filled with painful pathos.

Guillem has performed only contemporary program recently. After I saw her more emotional dance than when she performed at the one at the Opera national de Paris or Royal Ballet, I cannot stop long for her dancing classical programs. Her Masha realized me that she was still evolving her dance.

Like other form of art, audience prefers tragedy to comedy in ballet, too. It’s much harder for artists to perform tragedy than comedy. But audience wants tragedy for cathartic effects, and promoters never forget to chase after what the audience want.

I wouldn’t mind to see tragedy personally,
but I don’t want tragedy in my life.

UK で男性が好む下着の色は？

バレンタイン・デーを前に Telegraph.co.uk に掲載された記事「アンケート調査によると、男性が最も好む下着の色は黒」。

一昔前というと、バレンタイン・デーに男性から、レースのついた赤い下着を女性に送るのがイギリスでは人気だったそうです（外国ではバレンタイン・デーは男女が互いにプレゼントを用意する）。

それが最新の調査によると逆転し、男性が相手の下着の色として最も嫌いな色として、半数以上が赤と回答。それに続いて不人気なのはピンク系（18%）、ベージュ系（11%）。逆に最も人気なのが黒で、2 番目に人気なのは白だと判明。

同じ調査によると、イギリスの 3 分の 2 の女性は、まだ赤が一番男性が好むセクシーな色だと思っているので、相互でギャップが生まれているようです。この記事を読んで、バレンタイン・デーの下着の色を変えた女性がどれだけいたのしょう…。

この結果、イギリスならではでしょうか。少し前にとある日本の女性誌で見かけた調査結果では、日本で男性が相手の下着の色として不人気ナンバー 1 だったのは黒、それに続いて赤系、パープル系とあった記憶が。

文化圏によって、文化人類学的に色の効果も変わってくるのでしょうか。さらなる調査をお願いしたいところです。

ところで、この調査を実施した「Dr Beckmann」、記事にあった「laundrycare expert」という肩書きを「lingerie expert」と読み間違え、下着学の研究者でもいるのかと思って調べてみたら

Dr Beckmann という衣類・家庭用洗剤を販売している企業でした。確かに、この会社の染み抜きはスーパーにもありました。

数年前、イギリスでは「赤い下着が幸運を呼ぶ、とくに試験の時につけるといい」という情報が流れて、新聞でも「赤い下着が大人気で売り場から消えた」と騒いでいましたが、ちゃんとオックスフォード・ストリート辺りの街角で売られていましたね。まるで日本のような商戦術だったなあと思い出します。

Which Colour Of Lingerie Do Men Prefer?

Just before Valentine's Day, Telegraph showed the result of new survey "Survey suggests men prefer black lingerie."

Once red, racy lingerie was a popular gift for Valentine's Day from man in the UK (in Japan. only woman gives a present to man with a confess of love on the day... in most of the case).

New lingerie survey exposes the totally different result. More than half of British men say red is the least favorite colour for their partner's lingerie. Pink (18%) and flesh-tones (11%) are following after this. Most favorite colour is black, closely followed by white.

The survey also shows almost two-thirds women think their men prefer to see them in red lingerie. Well, how many women changed the colour of their bra and knickers on Valentine's Day after reading the article?

This seems a typical result of British men. The article in a Japanese women's magazine showed a similar survey which I read a couple of months ago. It said black was the least favorite colour of girlfriend's lingerie for Japanese men. As far as I remember, red and purple followed after that.

Are there any cultural difference in favorite colours in the light of anthropology? I look forward to their further study on this issue.

By the way, I mistook the description of the body of this survey "Dr Beckmann" as lingerie expert instead of laundrycare expert. When I searched the name, what I found was totally different from my expectation... it was a company handling cleaner for laundry or household. Yes, I saw their stain removers in Tesco or Sainsbury's.

Going back to several years ago, there was a gossip that red lingerie was a lucky item for women, especially when they had a exam. Some newspapers said "all women are rushing into a shop for red lingerie, it is difficult to find red one on the street." But I remember I could easily find it even around Oxford Street. It was really Japanese-like gimmick by retailers.

食べ物ネタが続きます。

TED（Technology Entertainment Design）は、科学者、アーティスト、政治家、ミュージシャン、起業家など、ジャンルにこだわらず興味深い取り組みをしている人々を招いた講演会を毎年アメリカで開催しています。

そのプログラムの１つ、TED Prizeで、今年は日本でもおなじみのイギリス人 TV シェフ、ジェイミー・オリバーが表彰されました。ビデオは 2 月 10 日に行われた表彰式のスピーチ。

親しみやすいキャラクターとスタイリッシュな料理で人気を博してきたジェイミー。ただセレブシェフになるだけでなく、学校給食や子どもの食生活の見直しをよびかけたり、はみ出し者のティーンエイジャーに自身のレストランで働く機会を与えて更生するサポートをしたり、なかなかな社会起業家でもあります。

そんな彼が、イギリスに続いて、アメリカで７年間続けてきた子どもの食生活改善プログラムの成果が表彰されました。

子どもがトマトを「じゃがいも」と間違えたり（同じ科ではあるけど）、カリフラワーをブロッコリーと思ったりするなんて、日本でも見られるまだかわいいレベル。以前、幼稚園に子どもが持って来たお弁当で、ご飯以外には駄菓子が詰められていたという記事を読んだことがありますが、欧米よりはまだましとはいえ、日本の食生活も危なくなってきているなあと改めて実感させられました。

スピーチの映像には、ところどころ彼のテレビ番組の映像が挿入されています。舞台となったのは、成人の半分が肥満だと言われている West Virginia の Huntington。家族は料理をするということを知らず、冷凍食品やインスタントフードだけが並ぶ食卓、ピザが朝食...それがアメリカのごく一般的な食事の風景。ピザが朝食というところは、イギリスよりさらに重度の症状です。

ミルクと言えば、給食でも砂糖や合成着色料のつけられた加工ミルクがメインで、それだけでも年間でどれだけ糖分を摂取しているかといった刺激的なデモンストレーションも。

番組の予告編は、テレビらしく少し挑発的な演出がされていますが、「この子どもたちが、初めて親よりも短い間しか生きることができない世代だ」と子どもの食生活に関する警鐘には切迫感があります。「家庭」「学校」「社会（Main Street）」の 3 つの側面からの改善策は、企業の CSR にまで話は及びますが、消して大金のかかるプロジェクトではない、と彼は説明します。

私がイギリスにいた頃は、ちょうど彼がイギリスの学校給食を改善しようと取り組んでいた頃で、そのことがテレビだけでなく新聞でも取り上げられていました。そこでも、そして今回も一番大きな壁となっているのが、大人の無知と給食のおばさんたちの反抗。

イギリス版の番組の最後では、生徒の親たちが学校に招かれ、改善された給食を試食して、まっとうな食事がどれだけ体にも心にも良いものかと思い知ります。

最近きちんと 3 食摂らないで、食事をなおざりにしがちな私の耳にも痛い限りですが…。

Jamie Oliver won TED 2010 Prize

It's about the food again.

TED (Technology Entertainment Design) organize huge annual conference in the US to invite scientists, artists, politicians, musicians, entrepreneurs, and so on from all sorts of fields.

In the TED 2010 Prize, one of their programs, the prize went to UK's TV chef, Jamie Oliver. He is also famous in Japan. You can watch his speech at the ceremony on 10 February from here or just click the image above.

He became a popular TV chef for his friendly personality and stylish food. He did not become complacent with his status as a celebrity chef. He launched the program to improve school dinner in England and support dropped-out teenagers by offering working experience in his restaurant. He is a real social entrepreneur.

He was commended for his 7-year program to improve children's diet in the US following his achievement in the UK.

A kid take a tomato for a potato (I know they are the same family :-) ) or a cauliflower for a broccoli ...it's still not so serious. You can see the same thing in Japan. Once I read an article about a lunch box at a kindergarten in Japan. It was filled with rice and many cheep sweets. I assume Japan is still ahead of Britain and US in healthy diet, but this article was something for me to blow a whistle.

There are some clips from the trailer of Jamie's TV program in his speech video. He made his new challenge in Huntington, West Virginia where nearly half of the adults are considered obese. Family doesn't know cooking food and pizza is their breakfast. That is normal daily life there. Eating pizza is even worse than in the UK.

Even at school, milk means normally processed product containing a lot of sugar, chemical ingredients and artificial color. He demonstrated how children took in sugar for a year after drinking sugared milk by showing shocking visual.

"Unhealthiest City in America", the trailer of TV program is a bit more straight forward and sensational in TV's emotional way. But what he said "this is the first generation living shorter than parents" is very serious word regarding children's diet and life. He explained his project from three aspects, "Home", "School", and "Main Street." It covered CSR and is a really big topic. But he said it didn't cost a huge amount of money for the project.

While I was staying in London, Jamie was tackling to improve school dinner in England. Not only his TV program but newspapers kept paying attention to this topic. The mighty walls against him is always people's ignorance and dinner ladies' resistance even in the US.

In the last story of his UK's TV program, parents visited school and eat the improved school dinner. They found out what a terrible meal their children ate and that the proper meal made them healthy physically and mentally.

Actually I am not so keen on my meal these days, and don't eat three times a day. It could be my concern, too.

珍しく三文記事ですが、ロンドンのインド系イギリス人の愛憎劇。日本にもあったカレー殺人事件つながりということで。

Lakhvir Singh（45）は、Lakhvinder ''Lucky'' Cheema（39）と 16 年間不倫の末、彼が別の女性 Gurjeet Choongh（21）と結婚することを知ると、嫉妬のあまり、二人が食べるカレーにトリカブトを仕込んで毒殺しようとした。

Singh 被告自身は、当時ガンを病む夫が海外で治療を受けており、3 人の子供がいたが、出会って数ヶ月の別の女性と結婚しようとした愛人の心変わりが許せず、毒を盛った疑い。

うーむ、East Ender 並みな展開です。

Murder By Poisoned Curry

Well, basically gossips are not my cup of tea, but this story is a bit related to a murder in Japan (also concerned with poisoned curry) . It's a love-hate story among the Indian British in London.

Lakhvir Singh, 45 had a secret affair with Lakhvinder ''Lucky'' Cheema, 39, for 16 years. When Singh knew Mr. Cheema was about to marry with Gurjeet Choongh, 21, she got jealous to add aconite to the curry for the couple.

Singh's husband was being treated for cancer abroad and she was a mother of three. Singh allegedly plotted to poison the curry as she could not bear his lover's marriage to another woman whom Mr. Cheema had known only for a few month.

Wow, it's like one of the episodes in East Ender.

第 5 の味覚、Umami

Times Online で掲載されていた「うま味、第 5 の味覚の謎」。

逆輸入ネタですが、「甘味」「酸味」「塩味」「苦味」に続く、第 5 の味覚として、イギリスで注目を浴びているのが日本食の「うま味」。

日本、北米、ヨーロッパに拠点を置くうま味インフォメーションセンターが、日本食のだし文化を紹介するために、日本全国そして世界中を奔走しているようです。

写真にあるような、立派な本まで出版されています。

Times Online の記事でも紹介されていましたが、なんと 2009 年 3 月は、うま味発見 100 周年記念ということで、ピカデリーサーカスの大型書店 Waterstones で「うま味サミット in ロンドン」まで開催されたそうです。こちらに開催報告も掲載されています。

それにしても、Waterstones のピカデリー店にこんなセミナースペースがあるだなんて知りませんでした。

「うま味」というと、高校時代の家庭科でやった「おすましの作り方」の授業を思い出します。確か「うま味」は中間試験のテストにも出題されたような。

最近では、イギリスのちょっとしたスーパーマーケットにまで寿司が普及したとはいえ、生魚を食べる風習はまだ上流～中流階級の辺りにしかなじみがないようです。

イギリス料理は一般的に味がないことで知られていますが、とかくヨーロッパのラテン系民族に味音痴のレッテルを貼られがちなイギリス人が、繊細なだしの味をどこまで堪能できるか。

うま味インフォメーションセンターのサイトでは、純日本食だけでなく、うま味に賛同した海外シェフによるフュージョン料理の作り方も紹介されていて、異文化の出会いと新たな食文化の誕生が興味深いです。

Umami, Taste Of Far East

I reimport this topic from the UK. Creative chefs in the UK are keen on "Umami", this mystery of Japanese cuisine. Umami is one of the key elements in Japanese cuisine as the “fifth taste” following sweet, sour, salt and bitter.

UMAMI Information Center is a organisation which has several offices in Tokyo, London and New York. They are travelling all over the world to introduce this Japanese mystery.

Times Online mentioned about the Umami Summit in London which was hold at Waterstone's Piccadilly in London in March 2009 to celebrate 100th anniversary for the discovery. You can find the report here.

I didn't know that Waterstone at Piccadilly had such a big seminar room.

What I remember with Umami goes back to my high school day. My teacher of domestic science taught us about Umami to explain how to cook Japanese traditional soup. Umami seemed a really important issue, we found it was on a semi-final exam.

These days, Sushi became very popular in the UK, and you can find it even at a supermarket like Waitrose. But most of the British still hesitate to eat raw fish. Only upper or middle class has a privilege to eat them.

Generally speaking, British food is taste-less. The Latin European often pour scorn on and write off the British as no sense of taste. I wonder how the British can enjoy this subtle, delicate and beautiful taste.

UMAMI Information Center's Web site introduces not only traditional Japanese cuisine but many kinds of unique fusion inspired by "Umami" culture. Let's have a look and see what's going on with the cross-cultural encounters and new mixture of them!
