Interpipe produced pipes from Dniprostal yield

Interpipe rolled the first lot of seamless pipes, using the billets, produced at the new Dniprostal electric steel-smelting complex. The first pipe was rolled at the Interpipe NTRP plant.
The first pipe passed the entire set of tests, which confirmed the high quality of the billet steel. Production of the first pipe means that Interpipe moves to the vertically integrated company structure: from scrap procurement, through steel smelting, and up to the production of steel pipes and railway wheels. The list of consumers of Dniprostal pipe billets will include two company's plants, namely Interpipe NTRP and Interpipe Niko Tube. At present both enterprises are ready for integration with the Dniprostal electric steel smelting complex.
Mr. Alexander Kirichko, CEO of Interpipe, said that "One of the major reasons for Dniprostal construction is to ensure the provision of company' plants with our own billets for seamless pipes and railway wheels. Interpipe currently purchases 70% of steel billets for seamless pipes from external suppliers. When Dniprostal reaches its full capacity in 2014, Interpipe's self sufficiency in billets for production of seamless pipes will be 90%. Thus, the vertical integration of the company will be completed."
The rolling of the first pipe was carried out by one of the Interpipe NTRP shops, producing oil and gas pipes. Twelve billets with the weight of 100 tons were cut into ingots for production of casings (pipes used for oil and gas extraction). The rolling process resulted in 94 pipes with the length of 12 meters each.
Mr. Andrei Korotkov, chairman of Interpipe NTRP board, said that "Production of seamless pipes and railway wheels out of the continuously cast billets will allow Interpipe’s mastering and certification of new types of products, such as, for instance, corrosion-resistant pipes according to 5CT American standard and many other products. In addition to that we expect a considerable reduction in the metal discharge coefficient. Only for pipes we can save approximately 5000 tons of metal a year". (SteelGuru)

In 2011 Ukraine’s exports of steel products increased by 1.7% YoY to 24.138 million tons.
In December 2011 Ukraine’s steel product exports increased by 12.5% MoM to 2.258 million tons. In 2011 Ukraine registered a 9.8% increase YoY in its steel product imports to 1.843 million tons. In 2011 Ukrainian exports of pig iron increased by 19.8% YoY to 1.774 million tons.
In December 2011 exports of pig iron from Ukraine increased by 38.6% compared to November to 246,900 tons.

Ukraine's flat steel imports and exports rose in 2011

In 2011 Ukraine registered a 12.3% increase YoY in its flat steel imports to 936,000 tons. In December 2011 Ukraine’s flat steel imports decreased by 3.6% compared to November falling to 86,300 tons.

Ukrainian long steel imports up by 14% YoY in 2011

In 2011 Ukraine registered a 14% YoY increase in its long steel product imports to 430,900 tons. In December 2011 Ukraine's long steel product imports decreased by 16.7% MoM to 33,900 tons.

Ukraine boosts steel output by 6% in 2011

Ukraine boosted its production of crude steel by 5.7% to 35.3 million tons in 2011. Ukraine is the world’s eighth largest steel producer. The world crude steel production reached 1.527 billion tones in 2011 increasing by 6.8% YoY.

Ukrainian semi-finished steel exports declined in 2011

In 2011 Ukrainian exports of semi-finished steel products decreased by 5.2% YoY to 10.807 million tons.
In 2011 Ukraine exported 5.572 million tons of steel slabs, up by 1.6%, while exports of square billets went down by 12.7% to 5.139 million tons, both compared to 2010. Meanwhile, exports of semi-finished steel products from Ukraine increased by 5.3% in December 2011 compared to November to 1.029 million tons.
On the other hand, in 2011 Ukrainian imports of semi-finished steel products increased by 2% YoY to 476,000 tons. In December 2011, imports of semi-finished steel products to Ukraine decreased by 22.8% MoM to 32,800 tons. (SteelOrbis)

Interpipe launches hot testing at Dneprosteel

On January 17, 2012 Interpipe and Italian general contractor Danieli Company successfully began hot testing of the manufacturing equipment at the Dneprosteel Electric Steel Smelting Complex. During the first melting process 100 tons of steel billets were produced.
The hot testing will be carried out on the entire production chain of ESSC including arc steel-smelting furnace, ladle furnace unit, steel vacuum degassing unit and continuous casting machines No 1 and No 2. Over the course of the hot testing, staff will monitor the manufacturing process and conduct steel quality analyses.
Mr. Gennadiy Yesaulov, Director of Dneprosteel, said “To ensure the smooth progress of the hot testing process we have recruited and trained highly skilled employees, who have done extensive training at similar international metallurgical plants. Having completed the testing, Dneprosteel experts should have mastered the technicalities associated with the equipment and should be ready to take over the complex for commissioning.”
Mr. Alexander Kirichko, CEO of Interpipe, said “We have become witnesses to a very important national event. This was not just the first heat, but the birth of a new generation of metallurgy in Ukraine. The new plant is still making its first steps, but its foundation, made out of state-of-the-art technologies, international practices and new approaches to the culture of production will enable us to raise the standard of the Ukrainian metallurgical industry to a whole new level”.
The completion of hot and performance testing at Dneprosteel will last till the end of the first quarter of 2012; after that the plant will be officially commissioned. The projected production volume in 2012 will be approximately 700 thousand tons of steel billets. (SteelGuru)

Ukraine to try to boost domestic steel demand as external demand lags

Mr. Nikolai Azarov, Prime Minister of Ukraine, said that Ukraine would seek to stimulate domestic demand for its steel, mostly in housing and infrastructure projects, as weaker external demand had been affecting many of its companies.
The government provided massive tax breaks to steelmakers between late 2008 and through the end of 2009 after steel exports had collapsed late 2008 due to economic slowdown caused by international credit crunch. (Ukrainian Journal)

Iron and steel production reported down sharply in December 2011

Ukrainian metal companies cut cast iron production by 1.9% in December 2011, steel output by 4.1% and rolled steel output by 3.1% compared to November 2011 due to a continuous fall in demand for metal products on the global and domestic markets.
In December 2.374 million tons of cast iron was produced, with average daily production being 76,600 tons, along with 2.759 million tons of steel (89,000 tons) and 2.55 million tons of rolled steel (82,300 tons). (Ukrainian Journal)

Ukrainian finished steel output to drop slightly in February 2012

In February 2012 Ukrainian crude steel production will rise by 1.1% compared to December 2011 to 2.790 million tos.
Pig iron output in Ukraine will total 2.350 million tons in February, down by 1.01% compared to December, while production of rolled steel is expected to be 2.5 million tons, down by 1.96% compared to December.
In 2011 Ukraine registered a 3% growth in its finished steel product output to 31.677 million tons, a 6% increase in its crude steel output to 34.689 million tons and a 6% rise in its pig iron production to 28.879 million tons all compared to 2010.
In December 2011 Ukraine produced 2.550 million tons of finished steel products, down by 3.1% MoM, 2.759 million tons of crude steel, down by 4.1% MoM and 2.374 million tons of pig iron, down by 1.9% MoM.
In January 2012 Ukraine expects to produce 2.510 million tons of finished steel products, 2.820 million tons of crude steel and 2.370 million tons of pig iron. (SteelOrbis)

Ukrainian metal companies plan to reduce steel smelting by 1.1% in February 2012 compared to the targets for January to 2.79 million tons, and rolled steel production by 0.4%, to 2.5 million tons.
The target for February also foresees a fall in cast iron production by 0.8%, to 2.35 million tons.
Average daily cast iron production in February is planned at 81,000 tons, that for steel - 96,200 tons and rolled steel - 86,200 tons. (Ukrainian Journal)

Finished steel output of Ilyich rose by 18% in 2011

In 2011 the Mariupol Ilyich Iron and Steel Works, a subsidiary of the Ukraine’s largest vertically integrated mining and steel group Metinvest, saw an 8.6% YoY increase in its crude steel production to 6.136 million tons and an an 18.4% increase in its finished steel production to 4.710 million tons.
In the given period, Ilyich produced 5.177 million tons of pig iron and 11.983 million tons of agglomerate, up by 9.5% and 7.4% respectively compared to 2010. In December 2011 the company produced 350,000 tons of finished steel, 456,000 tons of steel, 425,000 tons of pig iron and 1.005 million tons of agglomerate. (SteelOrbis)

ArcelorMittal Kriviy Rih crude steel output in 2011 down by 7% YoY

In 2011 the crude steel production of ArcelorMittal Kriviy Rih, the Ukrainian subsidiary of the global steel giant ArcelorMittal, totaled 5.720 million tons, down by 7% compared to 2010.
last year ArcelorMittal Kriviy Rih registered an 8.5% decrease year on year in its finished steel output to 4.937 million tons.

Dniepropetrovsk Tube Works increases ERW pipe capacity

The Dniepropetrovsk Tube Works, a subsidiary of the Ukrainian steel producer Industrial Union of Donbass, plans to expand its production capacity.
At the end of 2011 the Dniepropetrovsk Tube Works commissioned a longitudinal electric welded pipe production line for carbon steel pipes with 10-76 mm diameter and also for precision stainless steel pipes.
The capacity of the new unit is 1,800 tons of products per month.
By the end of February the company plans to produce 900 tons of products per month.
The Dniepropetrovsk Tube Works also plans to install a coupling production line and a heat treatment line for production of high strength pipes for the oil and gas industry. (SteelOrbis)

Steel product deliveries in Ukraine up by 15% YoY in January to November 2011

In the first 11 months of 2011 deliveries of steel products to the Ukrainian domestic market increased by 15% YoY to 6.623 million tons.
In November 2011 steel product deliveries in Ukraine decreased by 2.3% compared to November 2010 and went down by 5.7% compared to October 2011 to 574,000 tons.

Ukrainian steel production in 2011 up by 6% YoY

According to the preliminary data, in 2011 Ukraine registered an 8.5% increase YoY in its finished steel product output to 30.373 million tons, a 6% increase in its crude steel output to 34.689 million tons and a 6% rise in its pig iron production to 28.879 million tons.
In the given period Ukraine saw a 26% increase in its steel pipe production to 2.213 million tons.
The country production of metallurgical coke went up by 5% YoY to 19.582 million tons, while hardware production decreased by 3% to 264,000 tons.
Delivery of scrap to metallurgical companies in Ukraine increase by 7% YoY to 6.745 million tons.
In 2011, Ukraine produced 79.418 million tons of iron ore and 65.807 million tons of iron ore concentrate both up by 3% compared to 2010.
In December 2011 Ukraine produced 2.480 million tons of finished steel products, down by 2.4% MoM, 2.759 million tons of crude steel, down by 4.1% MoM, 2.374 million tons of pig iron, down by 1.9% MoM, 163,200 tons of steel pipes, down by 11% MoM, and 1.628 million tons of metallurgical coke, up 1.6% MoM. In the first 11 months of 2011 Ukraine registered a 9.9% increase YoY in its flat steel imports to 850,000 tons. In November 2011 Ukraine’s flat steel imports decreased by 1.8% compared to October 2011 to 89,500 tons.

In November alone, Ukraine's steel product exports increased by 2.7% compared to October to 2.008 million tons.
