I am often asked to give people advice. So I figured it would be easier to write the advice once, here, and just send people links.

If you're just starting out, you definitely need a ukulele chord book. If found this one by Hal Leonard to be the most comprehensive.

Hal Leonard Ukulele Chord Finder: Easy-to-Use Guide to Over 1,000 Ukulele Chords

Beyond that, if you want some tutorial books, these two look good to me (although, admittedly, I never used either closely), and I see that Amazon offers the three of them as a bundle for a discount (look at the product page for such a bundle deal on the sales page for the chord book, above):

Hal Leonard Ukulele Method Book 1

Easy Songs for Ukulele Supplementary Songbook to the Hal Leonard Ukulele Method

Another chord book I recommend, particularly, for intermediate players is this one, though it may be a bit hard to interpret for a beginner:

Uncle Zac's Ultimate Chord Inversion Chart For Uke

Beyond that, I highly recommend most of the books from Jim Beloff's FleaMarketMusic.com site, a compendium of all things ukulele, especially song books:

FleaMarketMusic.com books

Join the fun for this annual tradition, the Roger Greenawalt's Beatles Complete on Ukulele, all day at the excellent venue, Brooklyn Bowl, in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

Come with your uke from 2-3pm and get in free! (Otherwise, it's a $10 cover.) Join the Uke Mob at 3pm (being filmed for broadcast on that evening's TV news) to sing "All Together Now" and "Why Don't We Do It in the Road."

Dozens of great indie regional bands are joining Roger to perform most or all of the Beatles's amazing canon of songs, all featuring at least one uke. It's an annual tradition and lots of fun at a great venue.

Brooklyn Bowl
61 Wythe Street (at N. 10th)
Williamsburg, Brooklyn
Subway: Take the L train from Manhattan's 14th Street to the first Brooklyn stop, Bedford, and it's a short walk.
3pm to Midnight

Yours truly, Rick Bruner, will be performing with The Suaverinos at 5pm, doing "Dear Prudence" and "You're Gonna Lost That Girl."

The Suaverinos, Friday, Nov. 18, at The Uke Hut

Many of you are probably familiar with this event from the epic PR it generates. Part of its hook, aside from The Beatles on ukuleles, is the inspirational fundraising, first for Warren Buffet, then last year for Yoko Ono, and this year for the worthy cause of Mark Zuckerberg, a man who needs all the friends he can get. Join the event "Friending Mark Zuckerberg"

The Uke Mob, a great photo opp, kicks off the event with a huge play-along of a song or two.

5pm on Saturday, January 15
Brooklyn Bowl
61 Wythe Avenue, (Williamsburg) Brooklyn, NY.

Free entry to anyone with a uke; otherwise, $10 cover.

The whole event is on both Saturday (6pm to Midnight) and Sunday (2pm to 8pm). Uke Mob participants are requested to show up at 5pm to learn the song and get organized for the kickoff at 6pm.

Nelly McKay is going to be there and possibly some other indie uke headliners.

Roger is also looking for folks who want to sing a song. He's got a list of available songs. If interested, you can email him directly at jollyroget at gmail dot com. Roger's been sick, so let's wish him well for 2011 with a big turnout.

8:30: The Edukated Fleas. Great ukulele swing from Wendy Matthews and Greg Doyle.

9:00: Jon Braman. Singer songwriter, "Father of ukulele hip-hop." Sounds like it would be terrible, but he's awesome!

9:30: T.A.B.U. Stands for something like "The All Boroughs Ukuleles," which is incongruous, because they're best known for Polynesian melodies and hulu dancers.

10:00: The Suaverinos. By now an eight-person ensemble of swing: ukes, piano, flugelhorn, block flute, bass, singers, and then some. The Uke Salon's house band, as it were. Much new material.

Get there early to hear the rocking rhythms of friend of NY Uke Salon Declan Zimmerman.

Announcing NY Uke Chat email forum

Hey, if you feel like chatting with other NY ukers about arrangements, technique, gigs, favorite UkeTube performances, etc., sign up for the new email discussion forum NY Uke Chat that I created with Google Groups.

Concert, Nov 19: The Ukuladies, The Suaverinos, Dr. Uke & Daughs, Bliss Blood, Jontom

Googie's loves the NY Ukulele Salon. Make Music NY and the NY Ukulele Salon strum in the summer solstice with a four-hour concert and play-along with some of the best performers on the NY uke scene.

Make Music NY celebrates its 4th year with more than 1,000 concerts around the city, along with similar events in hundreds of other cities. The "Mass Appeal" concerts feature lovers of specific instruments, and this year they've asked the NY Ukulele Salon to organize the uke gathering.

We have a great location: Union Square, as part of the Green Market (northeast corner of the park).

The event is a Monday, so it starts at 4pm and continues till dark. Fun for kids of all ages.

Each featured act gets 3 songs, including one for audience participation, so bring your ukes!

Please spread the word via Facebook, email, Twitter, spoken voice, etc.

I'm actually frantically preparing right now for a workshop I'm going to teach at the Fest, on using the Internet to promote your uke obsession, and I look at this site, and the last post is a few weeks old and no mention of the Fest! Argg.

One of my key lessons is this: all this Internet promotion stuff takes time!

But that's just me making excuses. The important thing is come on over to the fest. Tune into the Fest's Twitter account and blog. I'll mostly post to Twitter during the Fest and catch up on the blog afterwards. Fest organizer Ken Murray's lastest venture into uke madness, the Uke Hut, is open every Friday and Saturday nights in the cellar lounge of Maui Taco, 330 5th Ave (between 32nd & 33rd). See details and performance listings at UkeHut.com and follow the Hut on Twitter @UkeHut and Friend us on Facebook.

This Friday night, one of my favorites, Whistling Wolves, featuring the two-time World Whistling Champion Emily Eagen and ace harmonica player Trip Henderson, both of whom also sing and play uke. The full Whistling Wolves include a larger band, but they'll be debuting at the hut from 7:30 on Friday as a duet.
