The old dope peddler by The Three Terrors

The Three Terrors were an infrequent live covers act starring Stephin Merritt, LD Beghtol and Dudley Klute. Each show was a extravagant affair based around a theme. I think the three terrors stopped playing live a long time ago so I’d given up hope of ever hearing them. However, thanks to the internet (youtube and ageing spinster) I finally got to hear one of their shows.

The old dope peddler is a Tom Lehrer song from the show Drink, Drugs and Delirium, at the Bowery in 2003. Enjoy.

Stephin Merritt of the Magnetic Fields – Andrew in Drag on ukulele

One of the joys of a new Magnetic Fields album is that Stephin Merritt is forced, probably at gunpoint, to do a round of interviews with the press. His long pauses and dry humour twinned with energetic interviewers is comedy gold. My favourite is from a TV show, Good Day Atlanta, where he’s not been to bed the previous night and is promoting the children’s book series, Lemony Snicket.

Another great thing is that he’s happy to play a song on his ukulele. Andrew In Drag, from Love Under The Sea, is a great song that he performed for the best fit sessions. Can’t wait to see the Magnetic Fields when the play London’s Southbank Centre, on the 25th April, 2o12.

Katsuhiko Haida – The diameter of the suspended tin

Not sure the translation’s correct but it’s a great title for a song. Katsuhiko Haida is one of the originators of the Japanese Hawaii scene and he plays ukulele while sporting fine threads. I get the feeling, there’s a whole world of japanese ukulele awesomeness out there, if only I could read Japanese.

Whenever I start to lose faith in the world, normally after reading the comment pages on any newspaper on any article ever published, I no longer comfort myself by drinking pints of wine. No, instead I look for the weirdest and greatest japanese people playing ukulele on youtube. It was on one of these voyages that I discovered ultraman ukulele. Looking like Ferngully with ukes, it’s the artistic statement that James Cameron wish he had made.

While the internet has the ability to break my faith in mankind, it also has the power to heal it as well. Check out the video.
