ஐரோப்பாவிலும், ஏனைய நாடுகளிலும் உள்ள தமது தொடர்புகள் மூலம் இவர்கள் விடுதலைப் புலிகள் அமைப்பை மீள உருவாக்க முயற்சித்ததாக, தனது பெயரை வெளியிடாத அந்த அதிகாரி பிபிசி சிங்கள சேவையிடம் கூறியுள்ளார்.

பல நாடுகளில் தடை செய்யப்பட்ட அந்த அமைப்புக்கு நிதி சேகரிப்பது மற்றும் அதற்கான பரப்புரைகளை செய்வது ஆகிய நடவடிக்கைகளில் அவர்கள் ஈடுபட்டதாக அவர் குறிப்பிட்டுள்ளார்.

The UK government has approved more than 3,000 export licences for military sales to countries which it believes have questionable records on human rights, MPs say. The House of Commons Committees on Arms Export Controls says the value of the existing export licences to the 27 countries in question exceeds £12bn. This includes significant sales to China, Iran and Saudi Arabia. Sales to Sri Lanka raise "very serious questions", the report adds. The committees consist of four select committees meeting and working together: business, defence, foreign affairs, and international development. The chairman, Conservative MP Sir John Stanley, said he was astonished at the scale and value of the licences. There were, for example, more than 60 licences for Iran, including components for military electronics and what is described as "equipment employing cryptography". This appears to be a catch-all term which encompasses a variety of equipment, much of it in the telecommunications sector. Similar equipment figured prominently in China's £1.4bn worth of licences, which also included some small arms ammunition, even though there is a European Union arms embargo on Beijing.

Britain deports 29 Lankans

Britain decided to deport 29 illegal Lankan migrants to SriLanka. British Emigration and Immigration department announced all these individuals would be deporting to country by special flight. Among the 29 deportees 25 were Tamil nationals and they were residents of Killinochchie, Jaffna, Batticaloa, Vavuniya and Colombo areas. They have arrived Britain with student and employment visa sources said. Flight carrying Lankans left Heathrow airport and reached Katunayake airport today.

UNP Leadership extension proposal approved, Sajith objects, but says he will support leader

Did it mean LTTE’s capability was not to be entirely destroyed, but only partially so? Were we to go in for Bangladesh-type surrender by LTTE? If we were to ‘finish’ LTTE, we should have used all the strength and firepower at our disposal. Much of the confusion of the task of IPKF stemmed from lack of a clear objective. We went into this adventure with eyes wide open, and the fact that LTTE may have confronted us militarily did not come as a surprise. Yet, two weeks stretched into months…two years.” Palsokar does not forget to name those who fought bravely and lost their lives. This without excusing those in the higher formations who put the soldier in the situation without basic equipment like bulletproof jackets or AK-47 rifles, which even the LTTE had. Palsokar says, “How did we arrive at the figure of 50,000 troops?” Just one ‘arrangement’ – reinforcing all infantry battalions under his brigade with an additional rifle company- narrated by Palsokar is enough to show lack of planning by the higher formations. “The book is not a complaint. I am putting down facts for everyone to judge. My Brigade and IPKF as a whole did not receive the credit. I have written this book to put on record the heroic work of the 7 Infantry Brigade. Death sentence for woman with heroin

A woman who was found guilty for being in possession of 385 grams of heroin was sentenced today( 28) to death by Colombo High Court judge, Mr. Vimal Nambusavam. The person thus sentenced was a woman aged 33. On or thereabouts May 16th, she was arrested by officers of the Kirillapone police narcotics unit and thereafter the AG had filed action against her in the Colombo High Court. Petitions have been filed with the Court of Appeals seeking to the prevent Minister Wimal Weerawansa and Minister Rajitha Senaratne from participating in the Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC), appointed to probe allegations against the Chief Justice. The petitioners state that a case filed by Minister Weerawansa was withdrawn by him after being taken up several times before Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake and before a verdict was given. An unfavorable verdict was also issued to a fundamental rights petition filed by Minister Senaratne’s wife, the petitions state. Therefore a possibility exists that they would take partial decisions against the Chief Justice within the PSC, and them representing the committee will be bias to one party, the petitioners debated. The judge panel declared that as this cannot be considered as a petition submitted concerning the welfare of society and therefore they should present these facts to the PSC and then possibly the ministers would resign from the committee.

Indian prisoners in welikada safe: Kantha

The 33 Indian convicts and the five remand prisoners in Welikada prison were safe, the Indian High Commission said on Saturday morning. Clashes between security personnel and prisoners inside claimed over 25 lives since last evening. “The High Commission has been constantly monitoring the situation since the time the clashes broke out. The Sri Lankan authorities have told us that the Indian prisoners are safe,” High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka Ashok K Kantha, said. The Indian High Commission has sought consular access to the prisoners, but this demand has not been acceded to. “We are in touch [with the Sri Lankan officials.] We want to individually ascertain that the prisoners are safe. Hence we have sought access to the prisoners,” Mr.Kantha said. The High Commission has also deputed a senior diplomat to meet prison officials and ascertain the situation in Welikada. “Our main concern is the welfare of Indian prisoners,” he added. The prisoners have been without food or water since last afternoon. The Army had managed to take control of the prison in the early hours of Saturday. One source said that the combing operations inside the prison was being conducted in an elaborate manner, and it is only after this is completed will anyone else, including the Indian High Commission and relatives, be granted access to the prisoners. Many anxious relatives have been crowding in areas close to the prison to get information of their kith and kin. But prison officials have reportedly told them that they will be able to comment on individual cases only later. Some relatives were also at the National Hospital, trying to figure out if their near and dear are among the injured.

ADB says 2102 would be tough year for Lankan economy

In its recent report, Asian Development Outlook 2012, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) expressed the view that "2012 will be a tough year for Sri Lanka" with the regime of policy uncertainty proving to be an obstacle to attracting much-needed investment, with the private sector performing below expectations. There is a consensus that the economy would grow at a slower pace, though at a reasonable high rate. The Central Bank itself estimates that the economy would grow by less than last year's 8.3 percent. The Bank expects this year's GDP to grow by 7.2 percent. The ADB expects Sri Lanka's economy to maintain its strong performance of the last two years but since growth prospects for 2012 are less favourable it expects the pace of growth to moderate to 7 percent. The ADB is of the view that "Despite the improved political and economic environment, growth in private investment-domestic and foreign-is falling below planned levels.

Case filed against 60 former LTTE carders involved in the war crime allegations

The Government will in the next few weeks file charges against 60 hardcore LTTE cadres against whom the authorities had found clear evidence of having committed war crimes and crimes against humanity, a Committee of Legal Counsel said yesterday. Additional Solicitor General Suhada Gamlath said that this committee, which was set up to consider pending cases under the PTA, has finalised the prosecution process and would now move on to what needed to be done next. He said some 80 more LTTE cadres are under investigation by the Terrorists Investigation Division (TID) after new evidence was found that they were involved in separatist activities even while in detention. “The TID has gathered reliable information that these LTTE cadres have been in contact with LTTE activists and the Tamil Diaspora who are conspiring set up a transnational state of Tamil Eelam,” Mr. Gamlath said. He said their nefarious activities came to light during the Vavuniya prison riots in June. The TID has found evidence that they had used information technology and cell phones to keep in touch with their contacts abroad and of having acted on their advice. Mr. Gamlath said four new High Courts will be set up in the Anuradhapura, Vavuniya, Mannar and Welikada prisons to expedite the court inquiry by the JSC. During their investigations, the Committee had checked out some 300 files of LTTE detainees and about 150 ex LTTEers against whom there was no evidence of serious crimes would be sent for rehabilitation. “It is with a sense of relief that we are able to finalise this matter and take a final decision because the international community, the UN and other global agencies are looking at Sri Lanka and expressed concern about these LTTE detainees,” Mr. Gamlath said

China will provide Sri Lanka a loan of US$ 500 million (Rs. 64.6 billion) for the second phase of the Sri Lankan Government’s Priority Roads Project in the north and the south. The Sri Lankan Cabinet last Wednesday approved a proposal by President Mahinda Rajapaksa, as Minister of Ports and Highways, to award two local firms multi million rupee contracts for such services. The Sri Lankan President Rajapaksa has told his ministers in a Cabinet memorandum that the Government of Sri Lanka and the China Development Bank Company Limited (CDB) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a framework for cooperation. In terms of this MoU, the CDB has agreed to provide credit facilities to finance, inter alia, “infrastructure development projects with great significance to economic development.”

4,500 new appointments to Sri Lanka education sector

The event to grant appointments will take place at the Temple Trees on October 02.
