Police announced they recovered most powerful hand grenade in front of the Ottuchuttan Technical college in Mulaitivu this morning.
According to the police this bomb was manufactured in a foreign country and also said they were unable to find person who kept this bomb in the area.

Man arrested for ‘attempting’ to harm the president

A man, arrested on suspicion of attempting to harm president Mahinda Rajapaksa, has been remanded until January 25.
The suspect appeared before Anuradhapura additional magistrate Chandima Edirimanne today (Jan. 20).

He was arrested following a call to 119 police emergency that he was going to harm the president, who was on a visit to Mihintale yesterday.

The court ordered Mihintale police to submit a detailed report with regard to the caller’s number.

The remanded man, a resident of Uppuveli in Trincomalee, is a supporter of deputy minister Vinayagamurthi Muralitharan alias Karuna Ammn, according to the anonymous caller.

When police arrested him, he had no documents to prove his identity.

The lawyer appearing on behalf of him said the suspect was employed at a hotel at Mihintale for around six months, and that someone had given a malicious call against him.

In spite of this, we would welcome your visit to Lanka if you can, at your own free will, meet and discuss with all the students and
faculty of the University of Jaffna at your own choice and not be taken on a “conducted tour” by the Sri Lankan government authorities to meet with only selected students and faculty members of the Government’s choice. Also, you must make sure that you have a private, detailed discussion with the Members of Parliament belonging to Tamil National Alliance, the elected representatives of Tamil people.

We strongly urge you not to participate in any programs sponsored by the Sri Lankan government or meet with Sri Lankan government officials or any Tamil Para-military groups colluding with the Sinhalese government which has always been anti-Tamil. You must also publicly announce, with no interference whatsoever from the Sri Lankan Government, the aspirations and legitimate rights of the Tamil people in their ancestral homeland.

As you know very well, the chauvinistic, fascist, anti-Tamil Sri Lankan Government (which is a Government of the Sinhalese, by the Sinhalese and for the Sinhalese) stands accused of committing genocide against the Tamil people and it is trying to use prominent Tamils like you to hide its horrendous crimes against the Tamils. We would like to bring to your attention that the Tamils all over the world are boycotting Sri Lanka. The reasons for boycotting Sri Lanka are too many to list here; some are shown below:

1. Sri Lanka is one of the Top Red Alert Countries identified for Genocide.

2. Approximately, 216,000+ innocent Thamil civilians have been killed by the Sri Lankan Government during Military Operations. A study reported in the British Medical Journal on June 19, 2008 by the University of Washington, Seattle and Harvard Medical School (BMJ [2008]; Vol:336: p.1482-1486, doi:10.1136/bmj.a137 (published 19 June 2008) states that realistic estimate of the number of people died due to the conflict in Sri Lanka between 1975 – 2002 alone is 124,000 – 229,000. An overwhelming of these dead are Tamil people at the hands of the Sri Lankan military.

4. During the conflict, Sri Lanka did shelling and aerial bombardments on Safety Zones, hospitals, schools and places of worship. A published UN report says that there are credible evidence of Sri Lankan government’s involvement in war crimes and crimes against humanity.

5. Sri Lanka tortured and killed 500+ Indian fishermen from Tamil Nadu.

6. Sri Lanka gained its reputation as the Number One Human Rights Violator in South Asia.

7. Sri Lanka is listed as the 2nd worst in the world in disappearances of people.

8. Sri Lanka is the 8th Worst in press freedom out of 173 free nations.

9. Sri Lanka is voted off United Nations Humans Rights Council.

10. The Tamil Nadu Assembly has passed a unanimous resolution requesting the Government of India to apply economic sanctions against Sri Lanka.

11. It is alleged that during tsunami, Sri Lanka received $US 2.2 billion. Out of this, Sri Lanka spent $US 603.4 million on projects unrelated to the disaster and $US 471.9 million is missing.

12.After an unduly long delay, Sri Lanka finally came out with its flawed Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC) report. It failed to address the serious and pertinent issues raised in the UN Secretary-General’s Panel of Experts Report. Amnesty International (AI) has said: “The report’s major shortcoming is in addressing alleged violations of the laws of war, wheres the LLRC appears to have taken the government’s responses uncritically”.

As you know, academic boycott, economic sanctions and boycott of Sri Lankan products are among the tools used by international governments to make the rogue Governments like Sri Lanka to follow the international law.

We echo the voice of the Tamils all over the world to boycott any program organized either directly by the Sri Lankan government or by organizations sponsored by the Sri Lankan government.

We urge you to use your influence to protect the life and well-being of the Tamils who are undergoing untold sufferings at the brutal hands of the Sri Lankan Government and also in restoring to them the freedom, liberty and self-determination that they rightfully deserve in their ancestral homeland. Towards achieving these goals and objectives, we earnestly urge you to do the following:

1. Lead the campaign in India and elsewhere by exposing the atrocities committed by Sri Lanka against the Tamil people.

2. Tell all the Indian political leaders that they are supporting the persecution and genocide of Tamils by helping Sri Lanka which has always been anti- India and anti-Tamil and always pursued anti-Tamil pogroms since the island gained independence in 1948.

3. Tell the Indian government that its wrong policy of supporting Sri Lanka against the Tamils is bad not only for the Tamils but also for India’s self-interests.

4. Make the Indian leaders i) realize that the Tamils in the North and East of the island of Lanka possess their inalienable rights to establish their own Nation on their ancestral homeland, much like the Bangladesh people have in their homeland, and ii) actively support Tamil people’s quest for freedom and dignity.

Foundation stone to be lay for the construction of the "Colombo Lotus Tower" tomorrow

Sri Lanka Minister of Economic Development Basil Rajapaksa will lay the foundation stone for the construction of the multi-functional Telecommunication Tower and an Entertainment Centre, named as Colombo Lotus Tower at the auspicious time on Friday, January 20.
The proposed Tower will be constructed on a 3.06 hectares plot of land situated between the Eastern Beira Lake and D.R. Wijewardena Mawatha in downtown Colombo.

The 350-meter free-standing tower with a 4-story high podium will be South Asia's tallest tower. The construction of the Lotus Tower is to be completed in 30 months at a cost of US$ 104 .3 million.

The Telecommunication Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) will finance and implement the project, with technical assistance obtained from the Faculty of Architecture, University of Moratuwa.

The Tower will provide for Telecommunication and Leisure activities, and will facilitate the relaying of at least 50 separate broadcasting and telecasting services. It will also provide facilities for about 20 service providers in telecommunication.

Talks aimed at resolving the thorny issue of Indian fishermen poaching in Sri Lankan waters ended without agreement yesterday with a joint statement failing to note India’s response to Sri Lanka’s position that both countries respect the International Maritime Boundary Line.
The joint statement issued at the conclusion of the two-day meeting of the Joint Working Group on Fisheries in Colombo noted that Sri Lanka had “stressed” on the matter, but did not record India’s response to Sri Lanka’ position. In diplomatic parlance, Sri Lanka’s main demand that India ensure that its fishermen do not stray into Sri Lanka’s territorial waters drew no positive response that warrants a mention in the joint statement.

Fisheries Minister Rajitha Senaratne told the Sunday Times that Sri Lanka had always insisted on maintaining the inviolability of the IMBL. “We cannot have any compromise over the Maritime Boundary,” he said.

The talks failed to reach accord on a Memorandum of Understanding on Development and Cooperation in the field of fisheries. The statement said the two sides “agreed to work towards concluding” it at an early date.

The Sri Lankan delegation was led by External Affairs Ministry’s Additional Secretary Kshenuka Senewiratne while the Indian delegation was led by External Affairs Ministry Joint Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla.

From France to Canada, Tiger guerilla stamps have now appeared in Britain. One depicts a portrait of LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran but it is not clear whether the stamp has received the approval of Royal Mail, the sole authority for postal matters in Britain.
An External Affairs Ministry spokesperson in Colombo said yesterday the Sri Lanka High Commission had been asked for details relating to the issue of the stamp. This is a prelude to government officially raising issue with Britain.

A so-called Tamil Eelam Liberation Students Organization is said to be behind the move in Britain.

Last week the Sunday Times revealed exclusively that stamps bearing images of Prabhakaran as well as an LTTE flag had been issued in France.

After reports of the appearance of stamps with LTTE images in France, Sri Lanka lodged a protest with French authorities over similar stamps in that country. A British High Commission official in Colombo said he could not deny or confirm this report.

Body of murdered Red Cross worker repatriated to UK

The body of Khuram Shaikh, a British National who was murdered in a brutal attack on 25 December, has been returned to the United Kingdom in preparation for a family funeral, the British High Commission said on Wednesday (Jan 04).
Khuram’s brother, Nasir Shaikh, arrived in Sri Lanka yesterday to oversee the repatriation of his brother’s body and to seek information directly from the Sri Lankan authorities about the circumstances of the tragic attack.

On the afternoon of 4 January, accompanied by Acting British High Commissioner Robbie Bulloch, Nasir Shaikh met the Director of the CID to hear about progress in bringing those responsible for his brother’s murder to justice.

The Director of the CID gave his personal assurance to Mr Shaikh that everything was being done to bring about a successful prosecution of those responsible, the British High Commission in Sri Lanka said in a release.

“From the assurances I have received today I am confident that the Sri Lankan authorities have what they need to bring those responsible for the brutal murder of my brother, and the vicious attack on Victoria, to Justice.” Mr Shaikh had commented following the meeting.

“This is a very distressing time but I would like to thank all those involved in the investigation of my brother’s murder and those who have helped with his repatriation. For the sake of my brother and the rest of our family I hope that the investigation can now be brought to a swift conclusion.”

Khuram Zaman Shaikh, 32, died as a result of a deep stab wound following an attack at a hotel in Tangalle while on holiday in Sri Lanka.

A prosthetics rehabilitation manager working in the Gaza Strip for the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Mr Shaikh, was accompanied by a Russian national, Victoria Rustkacheva, who was seriously injured in a subsequent attack.

Colombo chief magistrate Rashmi Singappuli today (Jan. 02) ordered her remanding - for the ninth occasion - for a period of two weeks.

Making submissions, the CID informed the court that despite several reminders, the AG was yet to advice on the case.

Thamilini was arrested in May 2009 in Kilinochchi.

Youth attempte to rape swedish woman arrested

A group of youths at resort in Sri Lanka have been arrested over an alleged attempted rape of a Swedish tourist.
The five teenagers who attended the same school were produced before court on Friday.

The tourist, who is a school teacher, has requested the court to warn the school children, who were badly drunk as they harassed the tourist in Negombo, and release them.

Journalist Prasad Purnimal Jayamanne said the authorities near the resort where the incident happened refused to reveal any details saying it would badly affect the tourist industry in the area.

But the tour guides in the resort maintain a different view.

They say similar incidents occur regularly and put the blame on the police.

"Tourists are continuously targeted by the youngsters," sources said.

Soldier killed Army officer arrested

A solider was taken into custody for killing an army officer and injuring another officer by shooting them in Jaffna today, army officials said.

The suspect soldier attached to the 18th Gemunu Watch in Chavakachcheri was taken into custody by the two officers as he was fleeing the camp.

Jaffna Security Forces Commander Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe said the soldier had fled the camp with a weapon last morning.

“The company commander along with a team arrested him in an area close to the camp and was then brought back to his post in Chavakachcheri,” he said.

“He was then being brought to be produced before the Battalion Commander. On the way, he had grabbed a weapon of a fellow soldier who was on duty at a nearby check post and shot the two officers,” he added.

The lieutenant sustained injuries to one of his hands and was admitted to the Palali Hospital by the Army.

The suspect was arrested by the army and is under the custody of the military police. He was later handed over to the Chavakachcheri police.

LTTE leaders chief bodyguard remanded

A man said to be the chief bodyguard of slain LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran was indicted before the Colombo high court today.
Dhanabalasingham Lingadasan, also a personal assistant to Prabhakaran, was brought to the court under tight security and handed the indictment paper prepared by the attorney general.

He was arrested on May 17, 2009 and held for nearly two-and-half-years at the Boossa Camp for questioning.

Lingadasan was Prabhakaran’s chief security guard from 2006 to 2009, the court was told.

In a statement, CTU secretary Joseph Stalin says many science stream students have received results describing them as art students and vice versa.

The issuing of results irresponsibly with serious errors will cause immense pressure for the students, he says, adding that there will be problems, both locally and internationally, in the recognition of the certificates issued to them.

The ministers of education and higher education, without admitting responsibility, are making contradictory statements regarding the examination.

Imprisoned former Army chief Sarath Fonseka will not oppose if there is a request for a presidential pardon for him, UNP general secretary Tissa Attanayake said.
The ex-commander has told Mr. Attanayake, however, that neither he nor anyone in his family would make such a request.

The UNP general secretary was speaking to the media after visiting Mr. Fonseka at Welikada Prison.

He said the opposition leader would submit next month a request for a presidential pardon through Ven. Galaboda Gnanissara Thera.

A Member of the European Parliament who’s just led a delegation visiting Sri Lanka says he believes there are many bodies of dead civilians buried in exclusion zones where the final fighting of the civil war took place in 2009.
Member of European Parliament Richard Howitt said there should be full access to the areas. But the government says the zones are off-limits because there are landmines there. The number of civilian war deaths remains hotly disputed.

The delegation of Socialist Euro-MPs was permitted to pay a visit right up to the edge of the exclusion zone in north-east Sri Lanka, where tens of thousands of Tamil civilians were held by the Tamil Tigers and subjected to bombardment as the government fought the separatists.

No one is being allowed to resettle in that zone for the foreseeable future and a sense of fear prevails in nearby villages, the delegation’s leader, Richard Howitt.

“What everyone says is that it’s because [it is] literally where the bodies are buried, and that if people with forensic skills go in and investigations start, then the true horrors of what happened in those final days with so many innocent civilians said to have been killed absolutely unnecessarily, that that would come out and that the Sri Lankans will do everything to prevent that” MEP Richard Howitt said.

In a response to MEP’s comment Sri Lanka’s defence spokesman, Keheliya Rambukwella, told that certain areas were still excluded for resettlement because of landmines, not because of bodies or whatever else was alleged.

"There had been no landmine deaths since the end of the war and it would be risky to send people into those zones” Minister Rambukwella said. He also expressed his “surprise” at the MEP’s remarks.
The government has built a new village for people from those areas but they’ve complained that it’s too far from the sea.

Richard Howitt had warmer words for the army who he said appeared “pretty disciplined”, although too pervasive in the north.

A family of deported Sri Lankan asylum seekers have been handed £37,000 compensation and told they can return to Britain even though they have no right to be here.
The UK High Court ruling provoked a swift backlash after the Sri Lankans won their six-year legal battle for cash yesterday.

Mr Justice Cranston ordered the Home Secretary to compensate the family of five because they were taken from their home in the middle of the night and not allowed to call lawyers. The two parents and their three children, who cannot be named for legal reasons and are currently in Germany where they first claimed asylum, now plan to come back to the UK and launch another bid for residency.

They were flown back to Germany in 2006 because that was the country where they first landed after fleeing their war-torn homeland and where their asylum claim should be assessed. Yesterday campaigners called the ruling a travesty. UK Independence Party Home Affairs spokesman Gerard Batten MEP said: “These are people who have been in breach of the law and clearly have no right to be here.

“The rules are quite clear, people claiming asylum in the EU do so in the first country they land in. We were right to send them back to Germany. It is not as though they were dropped into a war zone. “When the authorities try to implement the law there always seems to be some legalistic barrier that stops them acting in the public interest. This case will send out another message to people saying they can thwart the law and get paid for the privilege.”

Tory backbench MP Priti Patel called the ruling “outrageous”. “To be giving any asylum seekers public money is wrong and an insult to the public. This just exposes the flaws in the system,” he said. “If there is a problem with our procedures they need to be sorted out quickly. “We do not have a bottomless pot of money with which to pay compensation.”

The family, the two parents, one son and two daughters – now aged between 14 and 23 – were taken from their home in Wembley, north London in January 2006 in a 2am raid by immigration officials and police. They were put on a 7.50am flight to Germany because the Home Office said that country was responsible for assessing their asylum claim.

Lawyers for the five said their rights had been violated because they were taken away in their nightclothes and not given the chance to arrange for their personal possession to be looked after. Manjit Gill, QC, told the court their mobile phones were taken away and they were stopped from getting legal advice or access to the courts. It is thought they had been in the UK for nearly 10 years when they were deported. They fled Sri Lanka in 1996.

At the High Court yesterday, Mr Justice Cranston awarded them basic and aggravated damages and said they could return to the UK if they wished.

No need to release LLRC report with an immediate effect : SriLankan government

Government announced that it’s not necessary to publish the report of Lesson Laearnt and Reconciliation Commission with an immediate effect.
According to the sources panel of LLRC as already included the solutions for the war crime allegations mentioned in the report. In such situation SriLankan government fail to release the report as soon as possible.

At present President Mahinda Rajapkasa is considering on the report hand over by the LLRC members and president will submit the report towards the parliament on correct time said the cabinet spokesman and the Minister of Mass Media Keheliya Rambukwella.

Minister further said government not in a position to release the report with immediate effect.

Minister also added since end of 5 years US government fail to release report on the twin tour blast took place in the September 9th.

None of the officials will raise question on this report but all the people interested in about the LLRC report said the cabinet spokesman.

Australian parliamentary delegation to arrive in Sri Lanka

An Australian parliamentary delegation is expected to arrive in Sri Lanka today on an invitation from Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa, the state-run radio SLBC reported.
During their stay, the delegation, led by Labor Party MP Maria Vamvakinou will hold discussions with the Speaker, the Opposition Leader and other parliamentarians.

The visit is aimed at strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries.

The Australian parliamentarians are scheduled to visit Sri Dalada Maligawa in Kandy and also to tour Jaffna in Northern Province.
