Jamie – Denver, CO

Dear Jamie,

No easy answer there. There are so many factors involved in ulcerative colitis (diet, environmental, stress, etc.) that’s it tough to point to just one. Here is my very quick 4-step process:

Get educated (read books, blogs, forums)

Eat diet low in fat; high in fiber

Eat less

Meditate (or some kind of stress reduction

There is so much more to it but this enough to help you manage this painful condition.

Take it from me: an ulcerative colitis diet can be very helpful in relieving the symptoms of this painful disease. Here are some facts about whether ulcerative colitis diet can help you and tips for implementing a program that works with your lifestyle.

The Symptoms of Ulcerative Colitis

Though the causes of ulcerative colitis are unknown we do know what it does; it causes problems in the large intestines and rectum. Symptoms of this disease can be anywhere from slight abdominal pain to severe weight loss–more severe still, there are sometimes complications such as gastrointestinal bleeding and ulcers. Because certain foods are known to be triggers of attacks, a specially-designed ulcerative colitis diet can sometimes be helpful in alleviating the symptoms of this often debilitating disease.

What is an Ulcerative Colitis Diet?

A typical diet for this disease will have you eating small amounts of food throughout the day. This helps to avoid overloading the intestine and possibly triggering an acute attack. It will also be low in fatty foods like nuts, beans, bran, popcorn and seeds; consumption of fats is also a common trigger.

Lastly, a diet of this kind will commonly allow only small amounts of dairy. Typically, a diet plan for ulcerative colitis is the same as any nutritionally-based diet plan. Full of protein, good fats, fruits and vegetables, and grains while limiting fat and sugar intake.

Foods to Avoid

Though there is no scientific evidence that any specific foods cause flare-ups in the disease, people who suffer from this disease have found triggers that are common to them all. Some of them, like alcohol, caffeine and carbonated drinks, are things that should be avoided in any diet; at least in excess.

Dried fruit, beans, and foods containing sulfur or sulfate as preservatives are also prone to causing attacks. The list continues with spicy foods, nuts, some meat, popcorn, high-fiber foods, seeds, raw vegetables, and things that contain sorbitol.

Balancing Life With a Colitis Diet

The trick with ulcerative colitis is balancing medications with a diet plan. In some cases, a person may choose to avoid medications in favor of a diet plan.

Similarly, some may choose to take medications and eat whatever they desire. However, these plans work best in conjunction. The medications are primarily designed to heal damage, while the diet plan is designed to minimize the damage before it is done to the body.

Importance of Nutrients

More important than the diet, though, is a vitamin regimen. Because the disease is so depleting, nutritional supplements are essential to the health of the sufferer. Without these, medication or a diet plan will not do much good.

If you or a loved one are suffering from this horrible disease, rest assured that there are things to help. An ulcerative colitis diet plan can help alleviate the symptoms, and can even prevent some occurrences. Though the cause is unknown, and there is not yet a cure, there is always room for hope. Until then, though, consider managing your symptoms with a specially-designed diet plan.

Ulcerative colitis symptoms reflect a broad array of physical ailments and can often be affected by many factors including diet, genes, age and mental outlook. It is often related to ulcerative colitis but can also be linked to other intestinal disorders.

If you’re experiencing ulcerative colitis symptoms, and not sure what they are or how to deal with them, here are a few tips to understanding this painful condition and what you might be able to do get back to healthy way of life.

What is Ulcerative Colitis?

Ulcerative colitis is an inflammation of the large intestine that can many times be a chronic situation. The exact cause of the problem is unknown but many studies are being done on the genetics linked to the issue.

There are many symptoms linked to ulcerative colitis including rectal bleeding, intense pain and diarrhea. Some patients may only have the rectal bleeding symptom while others with more severe inflammation may also feel urgency to relieve themselves or even pain when they try to use the bathroom.

Ulcerative Colitis Symptom Treatment

Once diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, there are many treatment options, depending on the severity. Patients may be prescribed medications in order to treat the issue.

The medications should minimize the risks involved with the problem and improve the patient’s overall quality of life. (Medications include anti-inflammatory agents and compounds that suppress the body’s immune system in order to decrease inflammation.)

Surgery as an Option for Ulcerative Colitis Symptoms?

Surgery may also be prescribed for ulcerative colitis sufferers. If a patient does not respond to medications, has a long-standing issue, or has suffered for many years with no improvement, surgery may be the best option.

Standard surgical procedures include removing the entire colon and the rectum. Stool will then be collected in a bag. Recently, however, surgeries have been developed in order to allow stools to pass through the anus once again, making it much less invasive.

Photo: samcrockett

Diet and Ulcerative Colitis

Many patients believe that special diets can help ease their pain and suffering. So far, however, no single diet has been found to slow the progression of the problem to a conclusive basis. (Although I’ve found, as an ulcerative colitis sufferer, that diets can manage the pain.)

You should, of course, eat a well-balanced, healthy diet and limit saturated fats to risk flare-ups. Certain patients may be sensitive to various foods; constant testing of which foods set off which reaction is helpful and very necessary.

Future of Ulcerative Colitis Symptoms

Research is continuing on the disease in order to find medications with more positive effects and fewer side effects. Surgical improvements are also being made. Someday, adults with bowel issues may even be able to receive vaccine shots to aide their suffering. Wouldn’t that be great?

Do you suffer from bowel obstruction symptoms? Not sure what bowel obstruction is…or how to treat it? Here is an inside look at this painful condition and what you can do to alleviate the symptoms of a bowel obstruction.

How Digestion Works

Every organ involved in the human digestive system works together simultaneously to absorb, digest and expel unused nutrients brought into the body via the mouth in the form of food.

When food is eaten, it goes through a complex digestive system before it is expelled from the body in the form of toxic waste, also known as feces.

The colon and intestines are responsible for absorbing the last bit of nutrients in the unused portion of food waste, to expel the rest. When the colon is not performing correctly, individuals may suffer from bowel obstruction symptoms.

What are the Symptoms?

Common symptoms are pain and bloating of the abdomen, nausea and vomiting, little to no gas passing through the rectum, constipation, diarrhea and often blood will be detected in the stools. (These are all symptoms that can also be related to ulcerative colitis, so determining whether an obstruction is present or if the symptoms are caused by ulcerative colitis is very important.)

The Role of Diet With Bowel Obstruction Symptoms?

These problems, and other bowel related complications, are sometimes caused by a poor diet. A diet high in fiber and water intake is crucial to prevent these and other problems associated with the bowels. If these symptoms are present, it is important to seek medical attention, especially if there is blood present in the stools.

Photo: NourishingCook

Can a Cleanse Help With Bowel Obstruction Symptoms?

To try to correct symptoms that are not severe enough to seek medical help can often be cured by doing a colon cleanse. When cleansing the bowel a lot of built-up toxins can be flushed from the body which will cause some of the above symptoms to cease.

It is crucial to immediately begin a diet that is high in fiber, or take fiber supplements to prevent blockages, constipation and other irritable bowel disorders. Drinking plenty of water is a crucial element to recovering proper colon help.

Healthy Inside

Because the colon and intestines are responsible for keeping toxins out of our bodies it is wise to care for their specific needs, even if it means an individual must change their lifestyle and eating habits.

The body will feel so much better if the colon and intestines are cleansed regularly and cared for daily through proper diet and exercise. Bowel obstruction symptoms can literally disappear once a balanced diet and a good cleansing has been put into action.

Individuals that suffered with unhealthy bowel obstruction symptoms will experience a higher quality of life if the organs are cared for properly, this can also extend an individual’s lifespan.

As most sufferers of ulcerative colitis will do at some point, I was looking for relief from my painful symptoms through dietary changes. Okay…yes I should avoid foods that cause bowel inflammation. But all the stuff I liked did that.

Then I got this book,What to Eat With IBD. It was a lifesaver. REcipes that helped relieve my ulcerative colitis symptoms–and that actually tasted like food. (I especially liked the fact that I could camp a bunch of stuff while camping. Yum.)

Though I did end up getting ulcerative colitis surgery a few years later–I was just tired of the rollercoaster of pain–using this book was really a huge help in a dark, dark time.

Everybody’s body is different and some people might just be able to avoid ulcerative colitis surgery with this book to help them get back a good quality of life.

a few years back I found myself at a crossroads with my ulcerative

That’s why I really like this blog entry about dealing with pain. I especially love the tip “The more pain you are in, the more you need to focus on helping others.”

Sounds new agey-it’s not. Focusing on something else but your own wrapped-up pain can be on of the best things you can do for your ulcerative colitis pain.

If you’ve got ulcerative colitis then you’ve no doubt tried various drugs to remedy your painful symptoms.

Whether it’s prednisone or some other immunosuppressant, most ulcerative colitis drugs are not only painful–and somewhat expensive–but also have a dizzying array of side effects.

So before you run out and get ulcerative colitis surgery I would definitely look at 2 possible options if ulcerative colitis drugs have failed you:

1)Remicade

Pros/New treatment, good recovery rates, less severe side effects than prednisone

Cons/Expensive, still has side effects, can have less effect over time

2) Change to a High Fiber Diet/Probiotics

Pros/ Simple, inexpensive, not harsh on body
Cons/Doesn’t work for everybody

If nothing seems to work, then ulcerative colitis surgery can be an option. (Pain will no doubt be immediately reduced.) But ulcerative colitis surgery is an extreme option and shouldn’t be lightly considered. Take the time to try out as many ulcerative colitis treatment options as possible–and be sure to talk to your doctor.

If you or someone you love suffers from ulcerative colitis, you know that it can one of the most painful and debiliating medical conditions imaginable.

What feels like an intestinal issue is actually an autoimmune disorder; the body’s immune system begins attacking microorganisms that acually help the body digest food. (An unfortunate form of biological “friendly fire.”)

At some point, if you’ve experienced the painful symptoms of this condition, you’ve probably considered ulcerative colitis surgery―and wondered if it could help you.

Here are 3 tips to both understanding a little about ulcerative colitis―and figuring out if ulcerative colitis surgery will help you.

Ulcerative Colitis Surgery Tip No.1: Get a Second Opinion

Many people who believe they suffer from ulcerative colitis may actually be suffering from Crohn’s disease. Though both have similar symptoms―and both affect generally the same area of the body―they do have some major differences.

The biggest being that Crohn’s affects the entire intestinal tract, while ulcerative colitis affects only the small intestine. This makes the latter a very good candidate for surgical treatment―ulcerative colitis surgery can have an almost immediate impact on pain.

Crohn’s on the other hand, because it can affect such a large area is difficult to treat with surgery. Because they can both be difficult to diagnose be sure to get numerous medical opinions to certify that ulcerative colitis surgery will benefit you.

Ulcerative Colitis Surgery Tip No.2: Try Everything

Though ulcerative colitis surgery can provide amazing relief from the painful symptoms of ulcerative colitis, there are some serious consequences to consider first.

Namely, the fact that, in extreme cases, you many not have a regular bowel movement again. (This is not with every form of ulcerative colitis surgery; consult your medical doctor for details.)

Still, nobody wants to have needless surgery. Remedies that may provide relief include:

Anti-inflammatories: Like ibuprofen can reduce swelling inside the intestine

Immunosuppresives: Can limit the internal damage the body is doing to itself.

Diet: Some patients have found great relief from radically altering their diet.

Ulcerative Colitis Surgery Tip No.3: How Much Surgery Do You Need?

If you’ve tried everything, and ulcerative colitis surgery is your last resort at a pain-free life, then your next step will be to consult with your doctor to find out what kind of surgery you will be having.

Ulcerative colitis surgery comes in two forms: small intestine and large intestine. With the former, depending on how much intestine is removed,it’s possible to return to a normal life―even a normal diet.

With the latter, there will be dietary changes required but overall the prognosis is good and you have a good chance of eliminating pain from your life permanently. The key is to emphasize to your doctor you’d like to keep as much intestine as you can to help you lead a healthy and pain-free life.
