You are looking for online documents about a certain topic? Well, you always can make use of the advanced search offered by many search engines. Now this is made a lot easier for you by EDocFind.

Using an interface of a normal search engine, EDocFind restricts the search results to files in Adobe's PDF format (default). Other file types, that can be searched for, are Word-, Excel, PowerPoint, Rich Text Format, and even the flash format (SWF).

EDocFind does not tell you what the basis of the search results is - it could be a simple front end to Google's advanced search, but this is pure speculation on my side. If anyone knows, please add a comment here. The results returned by EDocFind are quite helpful.

What's new - ticTocs might keep you informed

You probably know the problem. You have access to many journals, but you don't find the time to check them regularly for any new articles that might be of interest to you. Well, you could just use each journal website and sign up, in order to get emails each time a new journal and a new table of content (TOC) is published. This can be done much easier now. ticTocs is a service where you can subscribe to rss-feeds of the journals you are interested in. You only have to register once, select the journals you are interested in, and you are done. Now you have two choices: either read the TOCs in your ticTOC account or even better, subscribe to the rss-feeds featuring your favourite journals. Thanks JISC!

Google Suche auf Hochschulen einschränken

Manchmal möchte man seine Suche auf Quellen aus Hochschulen beschränken, etwa um

akademische Publikationen oder Medien
Personen an Hochschulen
Informationen zu Studiengängen
Vorlesungen, Skripte, ...

zu finden. Hier kann man sich zwei Funktionen der Google-Suche zu Nutze machen.

inurl:text sucht nach Websites, bei denen 'text' in der url, der Link-Adresse, enthalten ist. So sucht inurl:fh nach allen Websites, die 'fh' in der Adresse haben. Es werden also unter anderem http://www.fh-frankfurt.de oder http://www.fh-osnabrueck.de gefunden.

OR (großgeschrieben) verbindet mehrere solcher Einschränkungen.

Da die Webseiten der meisten Hochschulen uni, fh, th, tu, efh oder kfh im Namen führen, kann man sich dieses zunutze machen. Gibt man also etwa als Google Suchstring das Folgende ein:

inurl:fh OR inurl:th OR inurl:tu OR inurl:efh OR inurl:kfh OR inurl:uni podcasts

so werden Webseiten von Hochschulen gesucht, die das Wort 'Podcasts' enthalten. Dabei kann es sich um (Technische) Unis, Fachhochschulen, ... handeln. Fertig!

Swine flu A (H1N1) seems to make big news now and then. Since only spectacular news are good news, it might be a good idea to go to other places additionally, where the information is not so much biased towards being news worthy and has a higher chance of being reliable. Google launched a flu shot finder to help people find places where they can get their fall flu shots. Only 20 states in the US are covered so far (Nov 2009). They plan to expand the service to all 50 states www.google.com/flushot.

Using numbers of cases reported from the WHO and the CDC website, I made a graph of the development of the total number of cases over time and the number of countries involved. The numbers are based on the laboratory confirmed cases published by the WHO, only the first numbers came from the CDC web site.

Countries are no longer required to test and report individual cases that are laboratory confirmed, thus there are no reliable numbers available after July 6th.

Since July 6th countries are no longer required to test and report individual cases, so the real number of cases is probably higher than the number of cases reported.

Google Flu Trends
Google takes a different approach to estimating the development of the flu globally. They use that the number of people in a region searching for flu related topics correlates with the number of cases in that region. Quite an interesting approach to epidemiology for diseases that do not have to be registered. Visit Google Flu Trends.

Erste fraMediale15' in Frankfurt

Die erste Frankfurter Bildungsmesse und Fachtagung fraMediale15' wurde erfolgreich abgeschlossen. 230 angemeldete Gäste hatten die Gelegenheit die Messestände zu besuchen und sich auf der Fachtagung zu informieren.

Für die Fachtagung wurde dabei ein neues Format gewählt. Von 14:00 bis 19:00 fanden ohne offizielle Pause Vorträge statt. Dabei hatte jeder Referent genau 15 Minuten Zeit sein Thema vorzustellen. Dieser Zeitrahmen wurde strikt eingehalten. Es gab keine ausgewiesene Zeit für eine Diskussion, dafür hielten sich die Referenten nach ihrem Vortrag im etwas abgetrennten hinteren Bereich des Tagungsraumes für Fragen bereit. Dies wurde noch dadurch motiviert, da man sich hier am Buffet von a chef´s affair wunderbar mit hessischen und asiatischen Spezialiäten versorgen konnte.

Im Rahmen der Vorträge gab es viele praktische Anregungen für die Nutzung der neuen Medien im Unterricht nicht nur an den Schulen, sondern auch für mich an der Hochschule. Man füllte sich teilweise zwischen den Messeständen, den Referaten, der Diskussion und dem Buffet hin- und hergerissen. Insgesamt eine sehr gut organisierte und gelungene Veranstaltung. Ich freue mich auf die nächste!

Die "Schweinegrippe" (H1N1) ist zur Zeit der große Renner in den Medien. Strenggenommen ist diese Bezeichnung nicht korrekt, die Influenza A/H1N1 wurde nur zum ersten Mal in einem Schwein nachgewiesen. Da in den Medien besonders gerne über Spektakuläres berichtet wird, möchte ich hier auf einige der offiziellen Quellen für Informationen hinweisen, die vielleicht nicht so reißerisch ihre Informationen beschreiben. Hier beschränke ich mich auf deutschsprachige Quellen.

Sehr gute Hinweise, wie man mit einfachen Mitteln sich gut schützen kann! Auch hier wieder ganz wichtig: Hände waschen und vom Gesicht fernhalten, dabei muss die Seife muss dabei ca. 20-30 Sekunden verrieben werden. Sie können auch lesen, dass beim Husten die Aufforderung "Hand vor den Mund" unhygienisch ist, da so Viren auf Ihre Hände gelangen und weitergegeben werden können. Lieber von anderen abwenden und in den Ärmel husten.

Am 16. Juli 2009 fand das sehr interessante Fachforum: "Videos in der Lehre" in Gießen statt. Das Fachforum war gut besucht, es gab eine Reihe interessanter Themen, in denen Projekte zur Nutzung von Videos in der Lehre vorgestellt wurden. Inzwischen scheint sich dieses Medium immer mehr zu verbreiten. Als vorrangig genutzte Werkzeuge scheinen sich im Bereich der Vorlesungsaufzeichnung Lecturnity für institutionelle Projekte und Camtasia Studio für den individuellen Anwendungsbereich durchzusetzen.

Die Vorträge wurden aufgenommen und werden im Internet zur Verfügung gestellt. Hier der Link zur Veranstaltung. Im Anschluß an das sehr gut organisierte Fachforum wurde dann noch bei gutem Wetter gegrillt!

Ich hatte die Gelegenheit über meine Erfahrungen mit der Nutzung von Screencasts und Podcasts im Rahmen der Hochschullehre zu berichten. Ich habe versucht, meinen Vortrag mittels iPod und iTalk aufzuzeichnen. Es hat recht gut geklappt.

Neues online Wörterbuch linguee.com

Mit linguee.com ist ein neuer Anbieter eines Englisch-Deutsch Wörterbuchs auf dem Markt erschienen. Zur Übersetzung werden laut Angaben auf der Webseite mehrere Millionen zweisprachiger Dokumente durchsucht. Besonders interessant ist dabei, dass der gesuchte Begriff im jeweiligen Kontext dargestellt wird. Dieses ist z.B. immer dann hilfreich, wenn mehrere Übersetzungsvarianten angeboten werden. Noch ist linguee.com im Beta-Stadium, aber bereits jetzt scheint es recht gut zu funktionieren.

Inhaltsverzeichnisse von Zeitschriften abonnieren - ticTOCs.org

Das Inhaltsverzeichnis (engl. table of content - TOC) einer Zeitschrift ist der erste Schritt, um zu entscheiden, ob die jeweilige Ausgabe interessante Artikel für einen bereit hält. Man kann natürlich regelmäßig nach erscheinen einer neuen Ausgabe die Webseite des Verlags aufsuchen, um dort das Inhaltsverzeichnis der aktuellen Ausgabe einzusehen. Dies ist mühsam und erfordert Disziplin, also macht man es wahrscheinlich nicht so regelmäßig, wie man es sich vorgenommen hat.

Der nächste Schritt wäre, die RSS-Feeds der interessierenden Zeitschriften zu abonnieren. Dann kann man in seinen News-Reader - etwa Google Reader oder Bloglines - bei Erscheinen neuer Zeitschriftenausgaben die Inhaltsverzeichnisse der aktuellen Zeitschriften lesen. Das erfordert, dass man

die Webseite jeder interessierenden Zeitschrift aufsucht, den RSS-Feed sucht und diesen in seinem News-Reader abonniert. Dieses ist ziemlich aufwendig, wenn der Vorgang für viele Zeitschriften wiederholt werden soll.

Noch einfacher macht es einem das Angebot von ticTOCs.org. Zunächst sucht man nach Verleger, Zeitschriftentitel oder Thema die interessierenden Zeitschriften. Die Adressen der RSS-Feeds aller interessierenden Zeitschriften werden dann zusammengefasst in einer sogenannten OPML-Datei exportiert. Diese Datei kann nun in dem News-Reader importiert werden. Damit können in einem Arbeitsschritt die Inhaltsverzeichnisse beliebig vieler Zeitschriften abonniert werden. Kostenlos!

Librarians came first ...

When trying out the new Google trends gadget I used the "2.0" buzzwords I often come across or even use myself. Using "Health 2.0", "School 2.0", "Medicine 2.0", and "Library 2.0" as an example, I was quite amazed to find "Library 2.0" had search traffic more than a year before "Health 2.0" or "School 2.0" had enough search volume to be rankable by Google.

Library 2.0 did show up for the first time in the 2nd quarter of 2005. It took almost 1.5 years until School 2.0 (4th quarter 2006) had a rankable search volume. After another 3/4 year finally Health 2.0 appears - more than 2 years after library 2.0 had a rankable search traffic. Medicine 2.0 still does not have enough search volume for ranking, so at least for Google there is no such visible trend there yet.

At least it is not surprising, that the search volume for "Library 2.0" is so much higher than for the other terms, taking into consideration that there are many more librarians than teachers or people employed or interested in the health areas.

If you use Twitter already this is not new for you. But finally Twitter starts to make the German news, mostly because German celebrities are joining the crowds. The common opinion is more skeptical about it, and considers its use a waste of time.

But for quite a while Twitter already has been used successfully by people interested or active in science to keep up to date, search and share information, get organized at conferences, or just to have a short conversation - to mention just a few of Twitter's uses. There was even an effort made by 2020science, to visualize the Twitter science network and to quantify the influence of the users, if there is such a thing. You can find me there - I am one of the tiny dots ;-)

Open Educational Resources

For the educator resources on the internet are often like a double sided sword. On one side they might be very successfully applied in the teaching process, on the other side the licensing is not often clearly expressed, or access to the resource might be restricted, or even prohibitively expensive. Here freely available open educational resources become increasingly more relevant - not only for the process of formal teaching and learning in institutions dedicated to this task, but more important for self-guided learning also in the context of professional development.

Here are a couple valuable things I came across during the last years.
